ADAMS Mrs. Alice Anders Adams, age 83, of 107 Joines Trailer Park, Sparta, died Wednesday evening, July 31, 2002 at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by three daughters, and two sons-in-law, Irene and Lawrence Lowe of Low Gap, NC; Mae Scott of Sparta; and Mary and Chuck Harrington of Sanford, NC; four sons, and two daughters-in-law, Bobby and Shirley Maines of Durham, NC; Dean Maines of the home; Dale and Laura Maines of Dundalk, Md.; and Donald Maines of Mt. Airy, NC; and two sisters, Marie Maines of Aberdeen, Md.; and Edna Peake of Sparta. Twenty-one grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and three step-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Crouse cemetery in the Twin Oaks Community. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Friday evening at the Funeral Home.

MYERS Mr. Robert F. Myers, 83, of Ruthbern Rd., Daytona Beach, Florida, formerly of Laurel Springs, NC, died July 29, 2002 at Daytona Beach. Mr. Myers was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Port Orange, Fla. He was a member for many years at Laurel Springs Baptist Church. He graduated from NC State University and enlisted in the US Army Infantry during W.W.II, where he attained the rank of 1st Lt. For many years he owned his own business in Laurel Springs, NC and was a rural mail carrier, retiring in 1981. In retirement he enjoyed fishing and gardening. Survivors include his wife, Betty W. Myers, of 57 years.; one son, Robert Myers, Jr., Clemmons, NC; two daughters, Hilda Burton, Hockessin, DE, and Mary Beth Simmons, Lake Wylie, SC; five grandchildren and three great grandchildren; a brother, John Myers, Laurel Springs, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at New Hope Baptist Church, Port Orange. A graveside service will be held at the Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery Friday, August 2nd., at 11:00 a.m. The family request that any memorials be made to the Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, Rose Marie Miller, 316 Peach Bottom Rd., Laurel Springs, NC, 28644. SCOTT Mr. Guy L. Scott, Jr., age 70, of 13 River Bend Rd., Sparta, NC., died Tuesday morning, July 30th., at his home. Mr. Scott was a former CPA and Banker. He started his banking career at the City Bank in Winston-Salem, NC. He later went back to school and got his CPA credentials. He moved to Sparta where he practiced for several years before getting involved in banking again. He was the President and CEO of Blue Ridge Bank, and retired from the First Community Bank. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Gambill Scott of the home; two daughters, Sally Bombich of Eatonton, Ga.; and Rebecca Long and husband Steve, of Conyers, Ga.; three grandchildren, Atlanta Long, Tyler and Ryan Bombich; three step-sons and spouses, Dan and Laura Gentry of Lewisville, NC; Tom and Gay Gentry of Sparta; and Steve and Kelly Gentry of Davidson, NC; and seven step-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted Thursday morning, August 1, at 11:00 a.m. at the Elk Creek Cemetery near Sparta. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Alleghany Wellness Center, 4 S. Main St., Sparta, NC. 28675

BATEMAN Mr. Arlie Ross Bateman, age 90, of 1149 Mabe Rd., Laurel Springs, NC., died Friday, July 26, 2002 at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth and five sons, Tom, Arlie, Dewey, Jessie and Cole Bateman. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Danny Mabe of Laurel Springs; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Louise Bateman of Sparta; Terry and Margaret Bateman of Laurel Springs; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a special friend, Ethel Fender of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday morning, July 28th. at 11:00 a.m. at the United Faith Church on Grandview Dr., in Sparta. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery at Piney Creek. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta and at other times at the home of Mary and Danny Mabe, 1240 Mabe Rd., Laurel Springs.

JENNINGS Anna Ruth Moxley Jennings, age 84, of 207 McArthur St., Galax, Va., died Saturday evening July 20, 2002, at the Twin County Regional Medical Center in Galax. She was the widow of Harold Jennings, and was preceded in death by her parents, James Carl and Bertha Fender Moxley, and a brother, Ray Moxley. She is survived by an uncle, Reid J. Fender of Sparta, NC; a niece, Barbara Kastle of Vienna, Va.; a nephew, Robert Moxley of Strongsville, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Pauline Moxley of Ennice, NC; and several cousins. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, July 24th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta, with Burial in the Crab Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services at the funeral home.

SMITH Mr. Thomas Harrison Smith, age 77 of 255 Shenandoah Dr., Johnson City, Tennessee, died Sunday morning, July 21, 2002, at the James N. Quillen VA Medical Center in Johnson City. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel Poole Smith. He is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, David A. Smith of St. Louis, Missouri; Craig and Kathy Smith of Johnson City; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and A.J. Gilland of Zuni, New Mexico; two grandsons, Eliot and Eric Smith of Johnson City; sister and brother-in-law, Lois and Bower Irwin of Fayetteville, NC; brothers-in-law, James L. Poole and wife Betty Sue, and Joe M. Andrews, all of Sparta; and sisters-in-law, Virginia Hash of Sparta; and Lucy Royall of Roaring Gap, NC. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday evening, July 23., at 8:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. An interment service will be held at a later date.

RICE Mrs. Nellie Head Rice, age 87, of 181 Bluebird Lane, Laurel Springs, NC., died Thursday afternoon, July 18, 2002 at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Donald Rice. She is survived by a niece and spouse, Diane and Bealer Caudill of the home; a nephew and spouse, Brian and Frances Head of Laurel Springs; and a great-great-niece, Lauren Burgess of Ennice, NC. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Pine Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, however, friends may call at the home at any time. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is in charge of the arrangements.

FINNEY Mr. Richard Earnest (Dick) Finney, age 85, of 104 Andrews Ridge Road, Sparta, NC; died Wednesday morning, July 17, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his son, Jimmy Finney. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Lou Finney of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Jean and David Duncan of Sparta; three grandsons, Jammie, Aaron and Gary Finney; two great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law and spouse, Betty Finney Moxley and Howard Moxley of Sparta; two special nieces, Anna Dean Smith of Lenoir, NC; Glenda Calloway of Granite Falls, NC; two nephews, Doug and Barry Spicer, both of Lenoir; and a brother-in-law, Howard Spicer of Lenoir. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Shiloh Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home and at other times at the home at 104 Andrews Ridge Road.

GILLESPIE Mr. James Clyde Gillespie, age 86, of 7097 Glade Valley Rd., Ennice, NC., died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at the home of his son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Patsy Gillespie. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vetra Norman Gillespie. Besides Jimmy and Patsy, he is survived by two granddaughters and spouses, Jill and Pete Radding of Columbus, Ohio; Jennifer and Bob Waldorf of Whiteman, Missouri; three great-grandchildren, Trent and Grant Radding, and Gretchen Waldorf; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Garvie Gillespie of Low Gap, NC.; Roy and Pauline Gillespie of Thurmond, NC.; Jessie and Kate Gillespie, Bob and Joyce Gillespie, all of Ennice. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, July 7th., at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Saddle Mountain Cemetery. Eld. Don Richardson and Rev. Everett Shaw will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, and at other times at the home of Jimmy and Patsy Gillespie, 7133 Glade Valley, Rd., Ennice, NC.

HASH Mr. Bays Jackson Hash, age 74, of 26 Fox Knob Rd., Sparta, NC., died Monday morning, July 1, 2002, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Poole Hash of the home; a son, Douglas Joines of Sparta; two grandchildren, Anna and Matthew Joines; four sisters, Mrs. Virginia Foster of Richmond, Va.; Mrs. Pauline Rosno of Sparta; Mrs. Wilma Dean Algeier of Baltimore, Md.; and Mrs. Mary June Orvin of Winston-Salem, NC.; and one niece and four nephews. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at the Elk Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post # 7034. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
