EDWARDS Mr. David Coy Edwards, age 64, of 24 Collins Rd., Sparta, NC., died Friday evening, August 30, 2002, at the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. He was preceded in death by a brother, Stuart Edwards. He is survived by his wife, Patricia F. Edwards of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Debbie Edwards of Sparta; a daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Charlie McClearen of Winston-Salem, NC; three grandchildren, Cole, Drew and Forrest Edwards; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Doris and Carlie Edwards; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Billy and Tina Edwards; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning, September 2, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be to the American Lung Association.

LEE Ruby J. Lee, age 75, of 1504 Pine Swamp Rd., Sparta, NC, died Tuesday morning, August 27, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert H. Lee. She was born January 1, 1927 in Bloomington, Indiana to Clarence and Marie Lee. She attended the School of Nursing in Lafayette, Indiana, and the School on Anesthesia in Harrisburg, Pa. She retired from the Alleghany Memorial Hospital after twenty-five years of service as head of Anesthesiology Dept.. She is survived by a nephew, Dr. Julian Lee of Miami, Florida, Professor at the University of Florida at Miami; her extended family, Ken and Janet Sexton of Asheboro, NC; John and Denise Horton and family of Manning, SC; Mark and Patricia Sexton of Florence, SC; Neal, Amy and Matthew Howell of Sparta; Jimmy and Patsy McKnight and family of Independence, Va.; and Lura Brinegar of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon August 30, 2002, at 3:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Galax, Va., or to the Alleghany Memorial Hospital Building Fund.

CARICO Mr. Joe Keith Carico, age 64, of 11270 Glade Valley, Rd., Ennice, NC., died Sunday morning, August 25, 2002, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Joyce W. Carico of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Randy Sartan of Sparta; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Sheila Carico of Ennice; grandchildren, Dustin, Josh and Tyler (TJ) Carico, Meagan Jolly, Cody Triplett and step-grandson, Scotty Triplett; a brother and sister-in-law, Buck and Charlene Carico of Ennice; five sisters and brothers-in-law, Jeanette and Doug Morris of Waynesboro, Va.; Ella Carico of Greensboro, NC; Juanita and Howard Carpenter of Elkin, NC; Nita Sue and George W. Hiatt of Germantown, Tennessee; Opal and George Wilson of Galax, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday morning, August 27th., at 11:00 a.m. at the Savannah United Methodist Church with Burial in the Edmonds Community Cemetery, Mark Carico will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.

MYERS Mr. James Edward Myers, age 74, of 53 Hibiscus Lane, Laurel Springs, NC, and Daytona Beach, Florida, died Tuesday evening, August 20, 2002, at his home. Mr. Myers was born in Alleghany County, NC. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and received one purple hearts and two oak leaf clusters. He was a retired farmer in North Carolina, and had been a winter resident of Daytona Beach for the past ten years. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn King Myers of the home; a daughter, Donna Jean Myers of Daytona Beach, Florida; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Edward and April Myers of Union Grove, NC; four grandchildren, Mark and wife Kari Johnson of Laurel Springs, NC; and Kevin, Matthew, and Khia Myers all of Moravian Falls, NC. Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning, August 23, 2002, at 11:00 a.m. at the Laurel Springs Baptist Church, in Laurel Springs, NC, near his home. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral service to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Alleghany, P.O. Box 1287, Sparta, N.C. 28675

BILLINGS Mr. Larry Junior Billings, age 52, of 6567 Glade Valley Rd., Ennice, N.C., died Sunday evening, August 18, 2002 at his home. He was preceded in death by his father, Rex, and sister, Carolyn Roberts. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Jacobs Billings of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Lenna and Jessie Brooks of Ennice; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry Elvis and Melissa Billings of Ennice; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; his mother, Barbara Billings of Glade Valley, NC; a brother and sister-in-law, Rex and Karen Billings of Sparta, NC; and two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ruby Crouse of Sparta; Sandra and Sammy Parks of Elk Creek, Va. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Full Gospel Church of Sparta, Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, however, friends may call at the home at anytime. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is in charge of the arrangements.

REED Mrs. Roy Evelyn Church Reed, age 92, of 10298 Hwy. 18 South, Laurel Springs, NC., died Saturday morning, August 17, 2002 at Sunbridge of Alleghany, in Sparta. She was the widow of Blain N. Reed, and was preceded in death by a son, Clive Reed. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Beverly and Moe Hamm of Statesville,NC; Deloris and John Hardin of Casa Grande, Arizona; two sons and three daughters-in-law, Bud and Pat Reed, Rod and Anna Reed, all of Laurel Springs; and Janie Reed, of Jefferson, NC; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Double Springs Baptist Church at Laurel Springs, NC; the body will lie-in-state one hour prior to the funeral service. The body will be taken from Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta to the church, where the family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Sunday evening. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Double Springs Cemetery Fund, c/o Pete Church, P.O. Box 104, Laurel Springs, N.C. 28644.

JOHNSON Mrs. Dema Mae Richardson Johnson, age 90, of Ridgeview Apts., Sparta; died Wednesday evening, August 14, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Connie Johnson. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Annaree Johnson, and five grandchildren. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Herbert and Joann Johnson of Sparta; eight daughters and six sons-in-law, Joyce and John Williams of Sparta, Doris Haas of St. Road, NC, Carol and Dale Higgins of Galax, Va, Reba and Lucky Wilmoth, and Geraldine and Everett Luffman of Elkin, Shelby Wilmoth of State Road, Dorothy and Roger Dowell of Lincolnton, Ga., and Alfojean and Ivan Lyons of Glade Valley, NC; 24 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 14 step-great- grandchildren nine step-great-great-grandchildren; special friend and caregiver, Mary Jones; and special friends, Mildred Ashley and Rosalee Sturgill. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel, Burial will follow in the Saddle Mountain Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to Hospice of Alleghany, P.O. Box 1287 Sparta, N.C.; or to the Saddle Mountain Cemetery Fund, c/o Claude Cleary, 2221 Saddle Mtn. Church Rd., Ennice, N.C. 28623. SHEPHERD Mr. Edwin Eugene Shepherd, age 65 of 4424 Cranberry Creek Rd., Laurel Springs, NC., died Wednesday, August 14, 2002 at his home. He is survived by his wife, Earlene Houck Shepherd of the home; a son, Chip Shepherd of Sparta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and John Crepps of Laurel Springs; Cassie and Denver Thompson of Sherrills Ford, NC.; four grandsons; one great-grandchild; his mother, Lessie Osborne Shepherd of Laurel Springs; a sister and brother-in-law, Sally and Jarvis Dickens of Statesville, NC; and a special uncle, Worth Shepherd of Statesville. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Bellview Baptist Church with Burial in the Cranberry Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, however, friends may call at the home at any time. HIGGINS Mrs. LeAnn Higgins Nicholson Hamby, age 28, of 1536 Shumate Mtn. Rd., Hays, NC, formerly of Sparta, died Monday morning, August 12, 2002 in Wilkes County from injuries received in an automobile accident. She is survived by her husband, Mark Hamby of the home; three children, Shayla Faith, Sydney Payton and Kelsey Jordan Nicholson, all of Elkin, NC; her parents, J.D. and Iva Higgins of Sparta; two step-children, Brittney Nicole and Hayley Marie Hamby of Hays; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, and at other times at the home of J.D. and Iva Higgins, 230 Grayson St., Sparta, NC

FLETCHER Mr. Michael Ray Fletcher, Sr., age 49, of 296 Holly Run, Glade Valley NC, died Monday morning, August 12, 2002 at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was a licensed Pharmacist with Kerr Drug, and was a member of New Covenant Church. He is survived by his wife, Ramona Hawks Fletcher of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael Jr., and Susie Fletcher of Oak Grove, Kentucky; three daughters, and two sons-in-law, Crystal Glover of Huntsville, Alabama, Lyndsay and Ken McGlamery of North Wilkesboro, NC, and Morgan and R.C. Dalton of Sparta; his mother, Fern Buchanan Fletcher of Bartow, Florida; three brothers, Jeffrey Fletcher of Bartow, Florida, Henry Fletcher of New Port Richey, Florida, and Bill Fletcher of Sebring, Florida; a sister and brother-in-law, Twinkle and Mike Brown of Lakeland, Florida; three-stepchildren, Morgan Moss, Camden Power and Gabrielle Moss; four grandsons; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at the New Covenant Church in Ennice, NC, with Burial in the Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. EVANS Mrs. Ima G. Evans, age 82, of Dublin, MD., died Monday, August 5, 2002, at Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, Bel Air, MD. She is survived by her husband, Gwyn E. Evans of the home; three sons, Roger G. Evans of Port Deposit, MD, Rodney G. Evans of Dublin, MD, and Doyle J. Evans of Whiteford, MD; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning at 11:00 a.m., August 9, at the Mountain View Regular Baptist Church, Glade Valley, NC., with Burial in the Church Cemetery. The Elder Ralph Evans will officiate. The body will be placed in the Church at 10:00 a.m. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is in charge of the arrangement.
