HOLLOWAY Mr. Leonard John Holloway, age 67, of 24 Adams Lane, Sparta, NC, died Monday, October 28, 2002, at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Nora Combs Holloway; and four brothers, Ralph, Will, Ray and Rosco Crouse. He is survived by his wife, Emma Lambert Holloway of the home; two daughters, Connie Bass, of Wytheville, VA and Treva Mount of Piney Creek, NC; four sisters, Ruby Royal and Louise Holloway of Aberdeen, MD; Betty McKinney of Hillsville, VA; and Delma Mahan of Sparta; and three brothers, Lewis Holloway and Clarence Crouse of Sparta, and Thomas Allen Crouse, Jr. of Aberdeen, MD; three grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Scottsville Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

WEST Mrs. Shirley Emily Kinkade West, age 77, of 179 Combs St., Sparta, NC., died Sunday evening, October 27, 2002, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She is survived by a daughter, Carolyn Hall of Boomer, NC; two granchildren, John Thomas Young of Whiteville, NC; James Samuel Young of Morganton, NC; a brother, Cliff Kinkade of Corpus Christi, Texas. A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, October 29th at 2:00 p.m. at the Piney Creek United Methodist Church Cemetery in Piney Creek. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is in charge of the arrangements.

DAVIS Mrs. Clyde Joines Davis, age 95, of 106 Davis Farm Lane, Ennice, N.C., died Sunday evening, October 20, 2002, at the Twin County Community Hospital in Galax, Va. She was the widow of Lonnie E. Davis. She is survived by a daughter, Lola Davis of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Duane and Pratt Davis of Sparta; two grandchildren, Sabrina Davis of Sparta and Brian Davis of Greensboro, NC; a half-sister, Jean Miller of Laurel Springs, NC; two nieces and a nephew. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, October 23rd., at 2:00 p.m. at the Savannah United Methodist Church with Burial in the Edmonds Community Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Edmonds Community Cemetery, c/o Eli Carico, 202 Golf View Lane, Ennice, NC 28623, or the Alleghany Education Foundation, 85 Peachtree St., Sparta, NC 28675.

CHOATE Mattie Sue Edwards Choate, age 75, of 179 Combs St., Sparta, NC., died Saturday morning, October 19, 2002, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia Ann and Stanley Praptasuganda of Houston, Texas; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Roger and Jane Choate, and Johnny Choate, all of Sparta; four grandchildren; and half-nieces and nephews, Muriel Joines, Pauline Baker, and Frank Richardson all of Sparta; Nellie Osburn of Bel Air, Md., and Mack Richardson of Shallotte, NC. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon, October 21st., at 2:00 p.m. at the Landmark Union Baptist Church with Burial in the Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the Church at 1:00 p.m., the family will also gather at the Church at 1:00 Monday. The family requests that memorials be made to the Landmark Building Fund, c/o Raymond Crouse, 388 Pruitt Rd., Sparta, NC 28675. The family will be at the home of Roger and Jane Choate, 178 River Hill Rd., Sparta.

PARSONS Infant Dylan Andrew Parsons, age 6 weeks and 4 days, of 54 Hidden Ridge Rd., Sparta, NC., died Friday morning, October 18, 2002, at his home. He is survived by his parents, Ronnie Dale Parsons, Jr., of Sparta, and Mary Louise Church of Sparta; a half-brother, Cody Dale Parsons; a half-sister, Ashley Brianna Parsons; his maternal grandparents, Marilyn Sue Church of Sparta, and Bobby Ray Church of Kentucky; his paternal grandparents, Ronnie Dale Parsons, Sr., and Tammy Parsons, both of Sparta; and his paternal great-grandparents, Irene Pennington of Sparta, J.C. Blevins of Wilkes County and Mable Parsons of Sparta. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. at the West Side Baptist Church with Burial in the Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the Church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Saturday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.

CAUDILL Mrs. Amelia Faye Walker Caudill, age 71, of 2511 Jena Court, Charlotte, NC., died Sunday evening, October 13, 2002, at her residence. She was the widow of Hubert Caudill. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Lora Caudill of Charlotte, and Sereena and Keith Welch of Maiden, NC; two grandsons, Ellick and Zack Welch of Maiden; three sisters, Pauline Caudill of Hendersonville, NC, Doris Caudill of Galax, Va, and Rachel and husband Doris Wilson of Ennice, NC; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Junior and Betty Walker of Glade Valley, NC, David and Sana Walker of Sparta, and Jimmy and Joyce Walker of Ennice. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, October 16th at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Whitehead - Joines Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of Bill and Deloris Carpenter at 48 Saddle Mountain Rd., Ennice.

MITCHELL Mr. Garry Ray Mitchell, age 44, of 3009 Fallston-Waco Road, Shelby, NC., died Friday, October 11, 2002 at his home. He is survived by his parents, Wayborn and Jean Rector Mitchell of the home; his maternal grandmother, Bessie Rector of Sparta; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ronnie and Priscilla Mitchell of Cherryville, NC., and David R. and Debbie B. Mitchell of Shelby; nephews, Christopher Mitchell, B.J. Philbeck and Simon Philbeck; and special aunts and uncles, J.D. and Raycene Hatcher of High Point, NC, Arnold and Opal Mitchell of Statesville, NC, Ruth and Colonel Brown of Sparta, Cam and Ann Osborne of Virginia, Clifton and Shirley Rector of Sparta, Raymond and Elaine Rector of Sparta, Mary and Terry Kennedy of Sparta, and Arlene and Tommy Hamm of Virginia. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday morning, October 15th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Shiloh Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Shiloh united Methodist Church, c/o Rev. PRETTYMAN Mr. Robert William Prettyman, age 73, of 438 Glade Valley Rd., Glade Valley, NC., died Friday, October 11, 2002, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem, NC. Born in Burlington, New Jersey, he lived in the area before moving to North Carolina, fourteen years ago. He was a past member of Providence Presbyterian Church of Bustleton, New Jersey, and a present member of the Sparta Presbyterian Church in Sparta, NC. Mr. Prettyman retired from Bell Atlantic in 1988 with thirty-three years of service. He was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He served in the U.S. Air Force in Korea from 1950 until 1954. He was a life member of the VFW Post # 7034, Sparta, NC. He was also a life member of Mt. Moriah Lodge F & AM of Bordentown, N.J., a 32nd. degree member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Trenton, NJ, and of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Trenton Forest # 4, and a member of Crescent Temple AAONMS of Burlington, NJ. He is survived by his wife, Jean C. Prettyman of the home; son, David C. Prettyman of Oceanview, NJ; a granddaughter, Diane E. Stead; a sister, Margaret P. Tomer of Burlington, NJ. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, October 15, 2002, at 2:00 p.m. at the Sparta Presbyterian Church. Burial with masonic rites will be held in Burlington County, New Jersey. In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

WHITAKER Mr. Walter Edward Whitaker, age 55, of 22 Darwood Way, Glade Valley, NC, died Friday morning, October 11, 2002, in Sparta. He is survived by a son, Eddie Ray Hutchens of Glade Valley; his mother, Ina Whitaker of Sparta; two sisters and brothers-in-law, June and Raymond Moxley of Sparta; Geneva and Jerry Bare of Glade Valley; three brothers, Billy Dean Whitaker of Raleigh; Thomas L. Whitaker of Sparta; and Carlis Paul Whitaker of Spindell, NC. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A graveside service will be conducted Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. at the Evans Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Sunday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.

TURNER Mrs. Margaret "Peggy" Harris Turner, age 67 of 70 Timberlake St., Sparta, NC., died Monday morning, October 7, 2002, at her home. She is survived by two sons, Bill Mitchell of Welcome, NC., and Stan Mitchell of Arcadia, NC; two daughters, Margaret Darby of High Point, NC, and Lisa Nelson of Trinity, NC; a brother, Ben Harris of Camp Blanding, FL; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, October 9th, at the Sparta United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the home. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

JENNINGS Mr. Harry Lewis Jennings, age 79, of 123 Center St., Sparta, NC., died Friday, October 4, 2002, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He is survived by his wife, Lorene B. Jennings of the home; two step-sons, Dwayne Murphy of Independence, Va., and Wade Murphy of Roaring Gap, NC; step-daughter, Shelby M. Brice of Winston-Salem; nine step-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren and four step-great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon, October 7th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Little Pine Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Ennice. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Sunday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Military honors will be conducted at the gravesite by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post # 7034.

ANDREWS Mrs. Hazel Farmer Andrews, age 82, of 7510 Doral Dr., Tobaccoville, NC., and formerly of Alleghany County, died Wednesday morning, October 2, 2002, at her home. She was the widow of Estel Andrews. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Sam Caudill of Tobaccoville; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Thomas L. Andrews of Sparta, and Gale and Geneva Andrews of Clewiston, FL; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon, October 4th, at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Shiloh Cemetery. The family received friends Thursday evening from 7 until 9 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to Hospice of Alleghany, P.O. Box 1287, Sparta, NC 28675.
