BROWN Mrs. Vivian Bryan Brown, age 84, of 1042 Laurel Glen Church Rd., Sparta, NC., died Sunday evening, March 30, 2003 at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She was the widow of Walter Brown. She is survived by five daughters and four sons-in-law, Regina and Ronald Parham of Clarksville, Tennessee, Bernice and Donald Jacobs of Patterson, N.J., Joyce Brown of Washington, D.C., Venia and Goldie Price of New Carrollton, Md., and Annette and James Harris of North Wilkesboro, NC; five sons and two daughters-in-law, Walter Jr. and Cheryl Brown of Bristol, Va., Herbert Brown of Sparta, Douglas and Vera Brown of Sparta, Steven Brown of North Wilkesboro, and Alvin Brown of Sparta; two sisters, Edna Choate and Ophra Edwards, both of Sparta; one brother, Jeff Bryan of Sparta; 13 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning, April 3, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at the Macedonia Baptist Church with Burial in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral service to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, and at other times, at the home place at 1042 Laurel Glen Church Rd., in Sparta.

JOLLY Miss Clara Mae Jolly, age 88, of 59 Shawtown Rd., Glade Valley, NC., died Thursday morning, March 13, 2003, in Sparta. She is survived by two sisters, Mearle Sutphin of Pilot Mtn., NC, and Rexie Faye Royal of Glade Valley; a sister-in-law, Pauline Jolly of Glade Valley; and 14 nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, March 15th., at 3:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Cherry Lane Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 until 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the funeral home. The family request no food be brought to the home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to Cherry Lane Baptist Church, c/o Lucille Irwin, 759 Mtn. View Rd., Glade Valley, NC 28627. The family will be at their respective homes.

MOXLEY Mrs. Vera Nyrell Moxley, age 83, of Hurricane, West Virginia, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at Putnam General Hospital in Hurricane. She was born in Ennice, NC, October 9, 1919, to Ethel and George Moxley. She is survived by two daughters, Claudia Jackson of Hurricane, W.Va. and Lana Mercer of Portland, OR; a son, Rocky Moxley of Dallas, TX; a brother, Homer Moxley and wife Norma of Salem, OR; a sister, Irene Gilbert of Sweet Home, OR; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, March 15, 2003 at 12:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Edmonds Community Cemetery in Ennice. The family will gather at the funeral home in Sparta at 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning.

JONES Miss Donna Carolyn Jones, 86, of 645 New Hope Church Rd., Laurel Springs, NC., died Thursday morning, March 6, 2003, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. Donna was born December 22, 1916, in Alleghany County, to the late Mack and Lula Billings Jones. She was a graduate of Sparta High School, Appalachian State University and received her masters from the University of Virginia in 1952. She taught in Wilkes County for a year, and in the Wilmington City Schools for four years. She was a part of the Signal Corporation in Washington, D.C. for a year, the Johnston County Schools for a year and the Alleghany County School system, serving as supervisor and teacher for 25 years, retiring in 1975. She was past president of the Sparta Woman's Club, a member of: NC Association of Educators, National Education Association, Supervisors Organization, past member, Delta Kappa Gamma, Delta Kappa Phi, Alleghany Unit of Retired School Personnel, NC Retired School Personnel and District NC Retired School Personnel. She was honored by Who's Who in North Carolina, Who's Who in American Education, The Blue Ridge Opportunity Corporation and was past board member of the Mental Health Association, and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. Donna's main, life-long concern was the education of children in Alleghany County. She is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth J. Smith of Raleigh, NC, and Marilyn Cleo Gotschall of Falls Church Va.; seven nieces and nephews, Richard P. Smith, Jr., of Hickory, NC, Peter (Johnny) Johnson of Auburn, Ala.; Carol J. Haigh of Sudburg, Ma.; Todd Johnson of Redondo Beach, Calif.; and William P. Gotschall, Mary Gayle Gotschall and Alan Gotschall, all of Falls Church, Va; and nine great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon, March 8th.at 3:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta with Burial to follow in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery at Laurel Springs.The family will receive friends from one until 3:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. Larry Atwood and the Rev. Fred E. Jennings will officiate. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Alleghany County Educational Foundation, 85 Peachtree St., Sparta, NC. 28675.

SPEARS Mr. Homer Clayton Spears, age 75, of 12907 NC Hwy. 18N. , Ennice, NC, died Sunday morning, March 2, 2003, at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Glasco Spears; and a son, Donald Carl Spears. He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Donna Spears of Ennice, and Gary and Judy Spears of Merritt Island, Florida; four grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Curtis and Elsie Spears of Galax, Va., and Jimmy and Helen Spears of New Castle, Delaware; a sister, Pauline McBride of Galax; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Newman Spears of Ennice; four sisters-in-law, Virginia Harless, Joyce Higgins and Loyce Tompkins, all of Ennice, and Nellie Starnes of Hiddenite, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday morning, March 5th. at 11:00 a.m. at the Savannah United Methodist Church with Burial in the Edmonds Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the church. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Savannah United Methodist Church, c/o Eugenia Tolliver, 589 Old Barrett Rd., Ennice, NC. 28623. The family will be at the home of Dale and Donna Spears, 12847 NC Hwy. 18N., Ennice. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is in charge of the arrangements.

ROBERTS Mrs. Clara Mae Lowe Roberts, age 77, of 71 Roberts Ridge Ln., Glade Valley, NC., died Monday, April 28, 2003, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. She was the widow of Coy Roberts and was preceded in death by a son, Coy Woodrow Roberts, Jr. She is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Claudie and Gale Roberts of Glade Valley, Joe David Roberts of Glade Valley and Jerry Lee Roberts of Sparta; two grandchildren, Buster Dale Roberts of Dobson, NC, and Virginia Mae Roberts Brown and husband, James Andrew Brown of Traphill, NC; one great-grandchild, Evelyne Grace Brown; a sister, Marie Blackburn of State Road, NC; and a brother, Russell Lowe of Fleetwood, NC. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday morning, May 3rd at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Cherry Lane Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of Claudie and Gale Roberts, 1267 Shawtown Rd., Glade Valley.

SMITH Mr. Charles Emory Smith.. 77, husband of Lucille A. Smith,. of Stanton Dr. North Augusta, S.C., entered into rest Saturday, April 26, 2003, at Eisenhower Army Medical Center. Mr. Smith was a native of Fort Mead, FL. He retired from the U.S. Army after 31 years having served in WWll. Korea and Vietnam. He was the recipient of two Bronze Stars in Vietnam. After his retirement. Mr. Smith worked for the U.S. Postal Service for fifteen years. Additional survivors include one daughter. June Smith Childers of Conyers, GA; one sister, Peggy Jo McEwen of Tampa, FL; one granddaughter, Brook Childers; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon, April 28th. at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta. Burial will follow in the Mt. Zion Methodist Church Cemetery at Piney Creek. The body will lie-in-state at the funeral home one hour prior to the funeral services.
