DAVIS Mrs. Virginia Lamb Davis, age 69, of 732 Fraser Rd., Sparta, died Friday evening, April 25, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was preceded in death by her parents, Hunter Howard and Cora Crawford Lamb; a sister, Kathleen Young; a brother, Richard Lamb; and a son-in-law, Jack Watson. She is survived by her husband, Bert Davis of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Debbie Davis of Thurmond; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Patricia and John Woodie of Statesville, Linda Watson of Jonesville, Connie and Dennis Andrews of Statesville, Caroline and Thomas Jennings, Jr. of Galax, Va., and Vicki and Lonnie McKinney of State Road; six grandchildren, Megan Jennings, Ryan Andrews, Travis and Mandy Welch, James Cook and Tesha Ashley; four great-grandchildren, Eden and Blake Ashley, Cassidy and Kyley Cook; a sister, Helen Graham of Frederick, Maryland; two brothers, Howard Lamb of, Staunton, Virginia and James Lamb of San Diego, California; a brother-in-law, Melvin Young of Springfield, Va; special nephew and spouse; Virgil and Tamara Davis; and several other nieces, nephews and friends from the Hanes Corporation. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning, April 28th. at 11:00 a.m. at the Whitehead Union Baptist Church with Burial in the Whitehead-Joines Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. RASH Mr. Sherman Rash, age 88, of 419 Rash Rd., Glade Valley, NC., died Monday morning, April 21, 2003, at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leava Crouse Rash; a daughter, Ethel Holbrook; and a grandson, Ray Smith. He is survived by six sons and five daughters-in-law, Sherman Randolph and Libby Rash of Goldsboro, NC, James Franklin Rash of Glade Valley, Ronnie and Nancy Rash of Cornelius, NC, Earl and Ellen Rash of Huntsville, Tn., Gary and Janet Rash of Salisbury, Brian and Lisa Rash of Glade Valley; five daughters and three sons- in-law, Kathleen Underwood of Trinity, NC, Pauline Whitehead of Sparta, Betty Ann and Wayne Jones of Charlotte, Henrietta and James Smith of Glade Valley, Rebecca and Jerry Brooks of Glade Valley; 25 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and several great- great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning, April 24th., at 11:00 a.m., at the Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church near Roaring Gap. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church just in time for the funeral service. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. WYATT Mrs. Alene Phillips Wyatt, age 82, of 2404 Plantation Center Dr., Matthews, NC, formerly of Glade Valley, died Saturday evening, April 19, 2003, at the Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte. She was the widow of Ted Wyatt. Mrs. Wyatt was born March 13, 1921 in Ashe County to Kirby and Eva Phillips. She was a member of Sparta Presbyterian Church, and was retired from Sparta Industries. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Cindy Wyatt of Matthews; and a granddaughter, Meredith Wyatt of Matthews. A memorial service will be held Wednesday morning, April 23rd., at 11:00 a.m. at the Glade Valley Presbyterian Church with Burial in the church cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home, however, friends may call at the home at 460 Glade Valley Rd., in Glade Valley at any time. In lieu of flowers, the family request that any memorial contributions be made to the Glade Valley Presbyterian Church and Cemetery, c/o Jerry Laws, Sparta, NC 28675.

MILES Mrs. Mae Royal Miles, age 90, 7308 Hwy. 21 South, Glade Valley, NC., died Sunday morning, April 20, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Will Miles, and was preceded in death by a son, Homer Miles; a grandson, Ira Miles; and six brothers. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Vena and Bruce Newsome of King, NC, Betty and Junior Walker of Glade Valley; a son, Melvin M. Miles of Mount Airy, NC; a special grandson who she raised, Gerald Leftwich of Glade Valley; other grandchildren, Windeloyn Clifton of Glade Valley, Abreena Tompkins of Ennice, Deryal Walker of North Wilkesboro, NC, Tamera Jackson of Mount Airy, and Derrick Miles of Roxboro, NC; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Hardin Royall of Hays, NC. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, April 22nd. at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church Cemetery near Roaring Gap. The family will receive friends from 1 until 2:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Friends may call at the home of David and Winkie Clifton, Cherry Lane Rd. in Glade Valley.

WILLIAMS Mr. John Todd Williams, 67, of 10697 NC Hwy 88 East, Laurel Springs, NC., died Saturday morning, April 19, 2003, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Sprinkle Williams of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, Jacqueline and J.M. Tucker of Laurel Springs; a step-daughter and spouse, Sharon and William Higgins of North Wilkesboro, NC; two step-sons and a spouse, Michael and Kellie Atwood of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and David Atwood of North Wilkesboro; six step-grandchildren; and several cousins. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon, April 21st., at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Rev. Lonnie Pruitt will officiate. Burial will follow in the Cranberry Cemetery. The family will gather at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Salvation Army.

MOXLEY Mrs. Joyce Hoppers Moxley, age 93, of 143 Reid St., Sparta, NC., died Friday morning, April 18, 2003, at the Ashbury Center in Wytheville, Ya. She was the widow of Claude H. Moxley. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wayne and Bower Hoppers. She is survived by a sister, Ruth H. Fender of Wytheville; seven nieces and nephews, Clayta Bryant of Wytheville, Linda Bowden of Chatham, Va, Charles Hoppers of Walnut Cove NC, Carol Freedle, Janie Duncan, Ann Woodie and Harold Hoppers, all of Sparta; and two special friends, Juanita Combs and Marie Truitt. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, April 20th. at 3:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Sparta. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. Rev. Mike Sepaugh and Rev. Don Bowden will officiate. The family will gather at the church at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, and at the home place at 143 Reid Street in Sparta after the service. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the charity of the donor�s choice.

HIGGINS Mr. Reece McCoy Higgins, 85, of Sparta died Friday afternoon, April 11, 2003, at Sunbridge of Alleghany in Sparta. Mr. Higgins was born in Wilkes County on Dec. 31, 1917, a son of Thomas McCoy and Mary Bell Higgins. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Italy and North Africa and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Higgins was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sparta and retired from Duke Power after 41 years of service. His first wife, Betty Ingool Higgins, passed away in 1979. Surviving are his wife, Georgia Bell Higgins of the home; a daughter, Reeca Higgins Daniels and husband Mike of Kernersville; two sons, James McCoy Higgins of New York, N.Y., and William Keith Higgins of Mooresville; three grandchildren, Michael Daniels Jr., Mary Daniels Finison and husband Shane and Matthew Reece Daniels; a great-grandson, Brendan Luke Finison; two brothers, James Alvin Higgins and wife Mary of Winston-Salem and Dean Spicer Higgins and wife Dottie of San Diego, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Mary Ruth Scott and husband Pete of Ennice; a stepgrandson, Randy Andrews and wife Leanne; and two stepgreat-grandchildren, Colby and Kaylee Andrews. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, April 14, at Vogler's Reynolda Chapel by the Rev. Cecil Weatherholt and the Rev. John McCray, with Burial to follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. They request that memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the American Diabetes Association

MOORE Mrs. Ruby Walls Phillips Moore, age 92, of 179 Combs St., Sparta, NC., died Thursday evening, April 10, 2003, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She is survived by a daughter, Sallie Caudill of Sparta; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bill and Donna Phillips of Lakeland, Florida and Lester Phillips of Sparta; a half­sister, Cynthia Hough ofOcala, Florida; a half-brother, Warren Walls of Chilhowie, Va.; three grandchildren, six great­grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Monday morning, April 14th., at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in the Whitehead Community. The Elder Earl Baker will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. The family will be at the home of Sallie Caudill, 281 Deerhaven Rd., in Sparta.

EDWARDS Mrs. Eva Johnson Edwards, age 87 of the Whitehead Community, Sparta, NC., quietly passed at her home with her family at 12:45 a.m., Monday the 7th of April 2003 after a lengthy illness. She is survived by two sons and daughter-in-law, Jerry D. and Patsy Edwards of the Whitehead Community in Sparta, NC., John L. Edwards of Columbia, SC.; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert L. and Ruth Johnson of Sparta, NC; a sister, Rose Duncan of Charlotte, NC.; three grandchildren and spouses, Sara and Stan Houser and Becky and Larry Scott both of Sparta, and Greg and Emily Edwards of Roanoke, VA; four great-grandchildren, Steffanie Houser, Jonathan Houser, Heather Scott, and Amber Scott; and caretakers, Jettie Royal and Ruby Evans Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon, April 9th. at 3:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Whitehead - Joines Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta

REEVES Mrs. Clytie Duncan Reeves, age 95, of 84 Independence Rd., Sparta, NC., died Monday morning, April 7, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of George Carl Reeves. Mrs. Reeves was a member of the Presbyterian Church. She was born in the Glade Creek section of Alleghany County on March 12, 1908, to John and Willie Edwards Duncan. She attended Glade Valley High School, Mitchell College and Appalachian State University. She taught school for nearly 40 years at Liberty Knob, Hooker, Wolf Branch, Carico, Little Pine, Glade Creek and Statesville. She was a member of the Cattleman�s Association, NC Association of Educators, Alleghany Unit of Retired School Personnel, NC Retired School Personnel and District NC Retired School Personnel. She received a blue ribbon in home economics from Glade Valley School, a gold medal in primary school, and a medal in recitation at Glade Valley, just to name a few She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Ralph Underwood of Homestead, Florida; two sons and daughters-in-law, Oscar and Patsy Reeves, and John Van and Ella Reeves, all of Sparta; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday morning, April 10th. at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in the Elk Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Alleghany Meals on Wheels. The family will meet at the Alleghany Inn Conference room after the service for lunch.

WARDEN Mr. William Wayne Warden, age 81, of 471 N. Main St., Sparta, NC., and Laurel Springs, died Saturday morning, April 5, 2003, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, NC. He was preceded in death by a nephew, William Shulenburger. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Grace Faircloth Warden of the home; two nieces, Rebecca Warden Slimko of Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, and Johnna Warden Coffey of Lenoir, NC; two nephews, Eddie Shulenburger of Salisbury, NC, and Steven Plummer; other nieces, Deanna Dixon of Sparta, Linda Mabe, Carol Wheeler and Judy Taylor, all of Laurel Springs; and Gail Ritter of Gibsonville, NC, Sharon Cooper of Anderson, Indiana and Jackie Mabe of Greensboro, NC; and other nephews, Gary Mabe of Laurel Springs and Bill Evans of China Grove, NC. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon, April 7th., at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Laurel Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. HARLESS Mrs. Mary Lyon Harless, age 102, of 2176 Grandview Dr., Sparta; died Thursday evening, April 3, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Grant Harless, and was preceded in death by a son.She is survived by three nephews, Robert Dean Cleary, Wayne Cleary and Ernest Cleary, all of Sparta; and special friends, Carolyn Young, Trudy Bell and Betty Roupe. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon, April 6, 2003, at 4:00 p.m. at the Sparta Presbyterian Church with Burial to follow in the Sparta Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.

MURPHY Mr. Donald Gene Murphy, age 63, of 62 Dons Way, Ennice, NC., died monday evening, April 1, 2003, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by his wife, Pat R. Murphy; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Derrick and Susanne Murphy of Piney Creek, Doug and Janna Murphy of Sparta, and Randy Murphy of Winston-Salem; a brother, Jackie Murphy of Dobson; a sister, Lois Murphy of Dobson; ten grandchildren; five step-children; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday afternoon, April 4th. at 2:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Meadow Creek Cemetery near Galax. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.

GENTRY Mrs. Ruby Smith Gentry, age 86, of 418 Crab Creek Rd., Ennice, NC., died Wednesday morning, April 2, 2003, at the Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville. She was the widow of Edward Lee Gentry. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Ann and Junior Crouse of Glade Valley, and Susie and Tom Miller of Sparta; four sons and daughters-in-law, Wade and Loretta Gentry of Galax, Carroll and Melva Gentry, Bobby and Jane Gentry, all of Ennice, and Jimmy and Angie Gentry of Glade Valley; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister and brother-in-law, Annie and Reid Fender of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday morning, April 4, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Crab Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Crab Creek Cemetery Fund, c/o Jack Handy, 1602 Crab Creek Rd., Ennice, NC 28623. The family will be at their respective homes.
