ANDERSON Mr. Clarence Richard Anderson, 85, of 284 Little River Drive, Sparta, NC, died Sunday morning, February 29, 2004, at his home. Mr. Anderson was born in Duluth, Minnesota on August 7, 1918. He was a member of the US Army during WW II. He was First Sergeant in the European Theater, the North African and Italian Campaigns with the 125 Field Artillery Division and the 34 Division. He was retired as a contractor and land appraiser in California. He was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and trusted in him for eternal life He is survived by his wife, Crystal Johnson Anderson of the home; two sisters, Virginia Peterson of Duluth, Minn., Hazel Peterson and husband Mel Roy of Two Harbors, Minn.; a brother-in-law, Edward Johnson and wife Frances of Glade Valley; a sister-in-law, Eunice Gustafson of Duluth, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 2nd., at the Sparta Cemetery. The family request that memorial contributions be made to the Joy Ranch of Hillsville, Va. There will be no visitation at the funeral home; however, friends may call at the home at any time. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Anderson family.

NEWELL Danny Ray Newell, age 31, of 1493 Lazy Branch Rd. Ennice, NC, died Friday, February 27, 2004, at his home. He is survived by his parents, Danny and Shirley Newell of the home; a brother, Terry Newell of the home; a sister, Sherry Poole of Ennice, NC; three nieces; and a special friend, Kristie Todd of Lowgap, NC. Funeral Services will be conducted Sunday, Feb. 29, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at New Covenant Church, Burial will be in the Old Garden Cemetery at Millers Creek, NC. The family will receive friends Saturday Feb. 28, 2004, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at New Covenant Church. Flowers will be appreciated or donations can be made to National Head Injury Foundation for the Annual Educational Conference for family and survivors of head trauma foundation, 202 Boulevard St, #C, High Point, NC 27262-4302, in memory of Danny Ray Newell. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Newell Family.

FINNEY Mr. Allen Thomas Finney, 62, of 37 Caudill Road, Glade Valley, NC, died Tuesday morning, February 24, 2004, at the Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. He was preceded in death by a son, Steve, and his father, Joe W. Finney. He is survived by his wife, Wilma Crouse Finney of the home; a daughter, Joan McDowell of Glade Valley; five grandchildren; three step-sons; his mother, Canell Vaughan Finney of Independence, Va; and a brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Mary Finney of Jefferson, NC. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 26th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Shiloh Cemetery in the Twin Oaks Community. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home in Sparta.

AUSLEY Mrs. Anna Lee Carpenter Ausley, 87, of 218 Westview Dr., Sparta, died Monday evening, February 23, 2004, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. She was the widow of Irving Ausley, and was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Olen Carpenter. She was born August 25, 1916, in Grayson County, Virginia, to the late Clay and Lula Blevins Carpenter. She retired from Troutman Industries as an inspector, and was a member of Crab Creek Primitive Baptist Church. She is survived by two sisters, Imogene Edwards and husband Chap, and Kathleen Edwards, all of Sparta; a brother, Wayne Carpenter and wife Mary of Mount Airy, NC; three nieces, Beverly Poole of Sparta, Nancy Mears of Mt. Airy and Brenda Bell of Stuart, Florida; two nephews, Jerry Carpenter of Sparta and Greg Edwards of Wilkesboro; a sister-in-law, Wanda Carpenter Gambill of Sparta; and a brother-in-law, Bob Ausley of Asheboro. Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Thursday, February 26, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta with Burial in the Shiloh Cemetery in the Twin Oaks Community. Elder Bobby Absher and Rev. John McCray will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, and at other times at the home of Imogene and Chap Edwards, 1200 Independence Road, Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Crab Creek Primitive Baptist Church, c/o James Wyatt, 335 Laurel Glenn Church Road, Sparta, or the Shiloh Cemetery Fund, c/o Walter Lee Hampton, 1173 US Hwy 221, Sparta, NC 28675.

BROWN Mr. Odell Talmage Brown, age 85, of 1696 CR 607C, Bushnell, Florida, died Thursday, Februry 19, 2004, at his home. He was born in Alleghany County, January 5, 1919, to the late, Floyd and Pearl Richardson Brown. He retired as a painting contractor. He had been in the Nobleton and Bushnell area since 1980 and before that, Maryland. He is survived by his wife, Doris Logene “Jean” Pugh Brown of the home; a son, Dennis Leslie Brown of Winter Garden, Fla.; a daughter, Linda Brown Hanson of Bowling Green, Kentucky; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lella Woodruff and Verna Andrews, both of Sparta; a brother, Dwain Brown of Mouth of Wilson, Va; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 24th at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church at Piney Creek, with Burial in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie- in - state. The Rev. Jerry Evans will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Monday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.

OSBORNE Mrs. Donna Hicks Osborne, age 81, of 85 Mt. Carmel Rd., Sparta, died Monday morning, February 16, 2004, at her home. She was the widow of Clement Osborne. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Kenny G. and Renee Osborne of Frisco, Texas; a grandson, Craig Osborne of Greensboro; a granddaughter, Veronica Espinoza of Dobson; two sister, Lona Dyer of Greensboro, and Virginia Cochran of Street, Maryland; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral servivces will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 18th, at the Osborne Memorial Baptist Church with Burial in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie in state. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. CRANFORD Mrs. Alice Irwin Cranford, age 82, 129 Cranford Road, Sparta, died Thursday evening, February 12, 2004, at Beverly Healthcare in Galax, Va. She was the widow of Joe Cranford. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Bill Roberts of Ennice, and Delma and Jesse Smith of Mouth of Wilson, Va; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Grady Cranford and fiancee, Janie Cheek of Ronda, and Danny and Geraline Cranford of Sparta; special granddaughter Miranda Cranford; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, John and Ann Irwin of Sparta; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Lona Osborne of Elkin, and Audrey and Wilmer Skinner of Johnson City, Tennessee; and special caregivers, Dorothy Crouse, Monra Edwards and Jane Talbert. Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. Sunday, February 15, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home. The family will be at their respectives homes and they will gather at the home of Bill and Wanda Roberts after the service for a meal and fellowship.

WYATT Mrs. Elsie Fender Wyatt, 83, formerly of Piney Creek, died Monday afternoon, February 9, 2004, at the Grayson Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. She was the widow of Bruce Wyatt. She was born in Alleghany County on August 30, 1920, to the late, Glenn and Maggie Osborne Fender. She spent most of her life working as a retail clerk. She is survived by a sister, Hazel Barton of Independence, Va; a brother-in-law, John O. Barton of Charlotte; and nephews and niece, Mike and Sue Fender of Piney Creek and Bobby Fender of Piney Creek. Several other nieces and nephews and cousins also survive. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 12th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Mt. Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. If memorial are preferred in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mt. Zion Cemetery Fund, c/o Thomas B. Smith, 3556 Mt. Zion Church Rd., Piney Creek, NC 28663. The family request that no food be brought to the home.

SMITH Mr. David Parlan Smith, age 57, of 255 Maple St., Sparta, died Wednesday evening, February 4, 2004, at the Mountain Home, V.A. Medical Center in Johnson City, Tennessee. He is survived by a sister, Diane Witherspoon of Sparta; a brother, Dennis Maines of Sparta; two nieces, Connie Evans of Sparta, and Amanda Jones and husband, Jeff of Sparta; two great nieces, Makenna Jones and Gracie Jones; and several aunts and uncles. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Landmark Cemetery at Whitehead. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday evening at the funeral home. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post # 7034.

WALKER Mr. David Walker, age 64, of 114 Blue Drive, Sparta, died Wednesday morning, February 4, 2004, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sanna Dunevant Walker of the home; two sons, David Christopher Walker and wife Donna Shumate of Glade Valley, and Varan Walker and wife Martha of Sparta; step-daughter, Gretchen Bryant of Ennice; six grandchildren, Kari Johnson and husband Mark, Tarra Walker, Garett Walker, Lucas Walker, Laura Walker and Kylen Bryant; three sisters, Pauline Caudill of Hendersonville, Doris Caudill of Galax, Va., and Rachel Wilson and husband Doris of Ennice; two brothers, Junior Walker and wife Betty of Glade Valley, and Jimmy Walker and wife Joyce of Ennice; a goddaughter, Desmine Simpson Young;and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 7th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Caudill Family Cemetery in the Whitehead Community. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Chris and Donna at 237 Cherry Lane Road, Glade Valley.

COOK Mr. Jimmy Lewis Cook, age 67, of 140 Tarney Wood Lane, Independence, Va., died Tuesday morning, February 3, 2004, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Pennington Cook of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Betty Cook of Sparta; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lisa and Danny Graham of Galax, Va; and Vickie and Allen Widner of Woodlawn, Va; a brother and sister-in-law, Russell Gene and Ruth Cook of Shelby, NC; four sisters, Faye, Brenda, Lena and Millie, all of Shelby; special friends, Mario and Elizabeth Gamez and daughter Lelia; nine grandchildren, Tabatha, Tiffany, Shaun, Steven, Mary Ann, Angela, Nick, Sha and T.J.; and one great-grandchild; Allissa. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, February 5th, at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta, with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Richard and Betty Cook, 209 Little River Drive in Sparta.
