WOOTEN Mrs. Janice MacInnis Wooten, age 63, of 1622 Scenic Valley Road, Glade Valley, NC, died Saturday, August 28, 2004, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She is survived by a daughter, Cindi Ward of Glade Valley; a son, Richard Bell of Glade Valley; and four grandchildren, Candace, Justin, Brittany and Kiko. A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 31st, at the Rich Hill Cemetery, at Glade Valley, NC. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Monday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. LANDRETH Mrs. Joan Henrichs Landreth, Age 75, of 3366 Hwy 93, Sparta, died Thursday evening, August 26, 2004, at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Terri Shields. She is survived by her husband, William Clinton Landreth, Jr. of the home; two daughters, Wanda Collins and husband Buddy of Bluefield, West Virginia; Cathy Moody and husband James of Siler City, NC; two grandchildren, Laura B. Cottle and Thomas R. Shields; a great-grandson, Andrew Cottle; a sister, Margaret Louise Henrichs of Coalwood, West Virginia; and a brother, Clarence Henrichs of Tampa, Florida. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Saturday, August 28th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Elk Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral services at the funeral home. The family request that memorial contributions be made to Sunbridge of Alleghany, Bird Sanctuary, 179 Combs Street, Sparta, NC 28675.

DELP Mrs. Polly Napier Delp, age 86, of 3856 Hwy 93, Piney Creek, NC, died Wednesday, August 25, 2004, at her home. She was the widow of Carl Delp. She is survived by a daughter, Pauline “Dimples” Delp Lowe of Lowgap, NC; two grandsons, Billy Lowe of Elkin and Johnny Lowe of Lowgap; two granddaughters, Polly Sue Lindsey and husband Jason, of Galax, Va, and Shannon Lowe of Lowgap, NC; five great-grandchildren, Carrie Sage Lindsey, Michala Lowe, Johnnie Lynn Lowe, Sydney Lindsey and Autumn Belle Lowe; and special friends, Linda Hornung and Lonnie Absher. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 28th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta with Burial in the Elk Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home in Sparta.

ANDERSON Mrs. Ruthann McGrady Anderson, age 40, of 51 Peaceful Meadow, Piney Creek, NC, died Tuesday, August 24, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Guy T. Perry, Sr., and her father-in-law, Frank Anderson. She is survived by her husband, Lynn Anderson of the home; a daughter, Misty Anderson of the home; a son, Brandon Anderson of Sparta; her mother and step-father, Helen and Harold Reedy of Piney Creek; a sister, Becky McGrady of Sparta; a brother, Mitchell Reedy of Piney Creek; her maternal grandmother, Edna Perry of Piney Creek; and her mother-in-law, Merlene Anderson of North Wilkesboro. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 27th at the Piney Creek United Methodist Church with Burial in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie in state. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Thursday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. DANIELS Mrs. Ethel Mae Daniels, age 86, of 79 E. Cheek St., Sparta, died Monday evening, August 23, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by, five sons and four daughters-in-law, Junior and Pat Daniels of Eden, Charlie and Gail Daniels of Galax, Va, David and Marcie Daniels of Eden, Albert and Angela Daniels of Eden, and William Daniels of the home; three daughters and a son-in-law, Elizabeth Long of Eden, Louise and Bill Garrison of Reidsville, and Janie Royal of the home; a special youngin, Theresa Dowell of Sparta; a brother, Henry Marshall of Eden; 21 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 26th at the Crab Creek Cemetery in Ennice.The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.

McCASKILL Janet Lynn Caudill McCaskill, 46, died Sunday, August 22, 2004, at her residence at Wanchese, NC. She was born in Sparta, NC, and was a retired mate on the Hobo Charter Fishing Boat. Mrs. McCaskill attended Wanchese Assembly of God and Manteo Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Clay Franklin Caudill and the late Pearl Upchurch Caudill and the wife of John Stephen McCaskill of the home. Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Mary Lorrain “Rainnie” McCaskill of the home; four brothers, Timothy George Caudill of Nags Head, Phillip Cleave Caudill of Knotts Island, NC, Jerry Clay Caudill of Kings Mountain, NC and Dale Franklin Caudill of Boone; and her in-laws, James T. and Mary C. Jones of Winston Salem. A graveside service will be conducted 3:00 p.m. Sunday, August 29th, at the White-Joines Cemetery in Sparta, the Whitehead Community. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Wanchese Assembly of God, P.O. Box 201, Wanchese, NC 27981.

COLLINS Emoryetta Reeves Collins, 82, of the 5400 block of Studeley Avenue, Norfolk, Va., went to be with her Lord on Thursday, August 19, 2004. Born in Sparta, NC, she was the daughter of the late Madge Rector Reeves and Lon Mack Reeves. Mrs. Collins attended the Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina and was the Editor of the Alleghany News from 1942-46. She was a member of Freemason Street Baptist Church, where she was a past president of the W.M.U., past president of the Norfolk Baptist Association W.M.U., and was the former chairperson of the Church Advisory Board. She was a member of the Great Bridge Chapter, daughters of the American Revolution, where she served as their Regent from 1980-83, District I Director, State Chairman, and was the organizing chairman of their Annual Flag Day Ceremony at the MacArthur Memorial. She was also the organizing Regent of the Norfolk Mace Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonist, in 1982 and was State Chaplain. She was a member of the Virginia Chapter of Founders and Patriots of America, where she served as their secretary and chaplain. She was a past president of the Edgewater Garden Club, and a Troop Leader of Girl Scout Troop 444 for 5 years, and a board member of the Colonial Council, G.S.A. Left to Cherish her memory are her beloved husband, William M. Collins, Sr.; a daughter Harriett Collins; a son, William M. Collins, Jr. all of Norfolk; two sisters, Lois R. Landreth of Sparta, NC, and Anne R. Sexton and her husband, Howard of Winston-Salem, NC; a brother, G. Thomas Reeves and his wife, Ann of Tacoma, Washington; and a number of nieces and nephews. A brother, William Van Reeves, Sr. and a sister, Linda R. Horton, preceded her in death. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 22, 2004 in Freemason Street Baptist Church by Dr. Stephen Jolly. Following the service on Sunday, Mrs. Collins will be sent to Grandview Memorial funeral Home in Sparta, NC, for a visitation on Tuesday afternoon from 1 until 2 p.m., and a graveside service will follow in Glade Valley Presbyterian Church Cemetery. WALLS Mr. Joe B. Walls, 80, of 1084 Ridge Road, Roaring Gap, and formerly of Forsyth County, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edna Rumley Walls. Since 1957 Mr. Walls has been a member of College Park Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. He was a member of the Sparta Lions Club, the Elk’s Lodge of Mount Airy, the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034, and the High Meadows Country Club. He was retired as an engineer for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Dyette (Dee) and Jim Pendleton of Charlotte, NC; three grandchildren, Lauren Bilotta and Husband Daniel of Charlotte, Jimmy Pendleton of Boone, and Ryan Pendleton of Charlotte; and a brother, Roby Walls of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 23rd at the Grandview Memorial Chapel in Sparta with Burial in the Woodruff Cemetery near Roaring Gap. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home in Sparta. EDWARDS Mr. Thomas Ralph Edwards, age 87, of 142 Hawthorne St., Sparta, died Tuesday, August 17, 2004, at the Duke University Hospital in Durham. He is survived by his wife, Opal Caudill Edwards of the home; a daughter, Susan Edwards and friend, Dr. Mark Smith of Scottsdale, Arizona; two sons, Tommy Edwards and wife Barbara of Laurel Springs, and Kenneth Edwards of Manassas, Virginia; a step-daughter, Hattie Caudill of Sparta; four grandchildren and one step-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Thursday, August 19th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel with Burial in the Union Cemetery at Whitehead. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. this evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, and at other times at the home of Tommy and Barbara Edwards, 984 Elk Knob Rd., Laurel Springs. DARR Edward Austin Darr, Jr., 83, passed away August 12, 2004 at Regents Park in Boca Raton, Florida. He was born September 10, 1920, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the son of the late Mary Frances Payne Darr and the late Edward Austin Darr. Mr. Darr was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Marilyn Hoff Darr from Raleigh, NC, and his second wife of 11 years, Dorothy Metz Darr from Wilmington, NC; one brother, David William Darr of Winston-Salem, and two sisters, Drucilla Darr Hall of Nashville, Tennessee and Deborah Darr Sartin of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is survived by two daughters, Frances Darr Parker of Boca Raton, Florida, and Diana Darr Davis and husband, JR, of Bardstown, Kentucky; two granddaughters, Christine Ann Jamison and husband, Reese, and Molly Austin Griesemer and husband, Scott, all of Boca Raton, Florida; one step-grandson, Jon Benjamin Davis of Marietta, Georgia; four great grandsons, AJ, Max and Sam Jamison and Scotty Griesemer all of Boca Raton, Florida; two sisters, Molly Darr Messner of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and Cicely Darr Roth of Elkin, North Carolina; two cousins, Jane Gilbert Womble of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Ann Gilbert Christ of Trappe, Maryland; and many nieces and nephews. He attended school in Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Augusta Military Academy, Fort Defiance, Virginia; The Lawrenceville School, Lawrenceville, New Jersey; and North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina. He served during World War II in the Air Force as a radar instructor. He moved to Sparta in July of 1947 with his family and became controller for Sparta Pipes, Inc./Dr. Grabow where he worked for 30 years until his retirement in 1976. He was a member of the Sparta Methodist Church, St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, the Sparta Masonic Lodge, the Sparta Lions Club and the NC State Wolfpack Club. He also served as an Eagle Scout Leader. A memorial service will be held for Mr. Darr at St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church in Sparta on Saturday, September 4th at 1pm. A graveside service will follow at Sparta Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, P.O. Box 367, Sparta, NC 28675.

RECTOR Mrs. Grace Greene Rector, age 95, of 1536 Glade Creek School Rd., Ennice, NC, died Monday morning, August 16, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Roy Rector. She is survived by three daughters, Mildred Chappell of Ennice; June Reeves and husband Floyd of Sparta; Billie Collins of Franklinton, NC; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Ruby Anders of Ennice. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 18th, at the Crab Creek Primitive Baptist Church with Burial in the Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the church, and at other times at the home of Mildred Chappell. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Rector family. BARTON Mr. John Oliver Barton, age 84, of 8201 Cedarbrook Dr., Charlotte, NC, died Tuesday, August 10, 2004, at his home. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Fender Barton; two sisters, Thelma Baird of Suffolk, Va, and Mildred Turner of Roanoke, Va; special caregiver, Randall Gantt; special friends, Willard, Jessie and Francis Gantt, all of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 11:30 a.m. Friday, August 13th at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery at Piney Creek. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Barton Family.

STURGILL Mr. Donald Lee Sturgill, age 83, of 168 E. Whitehead St., Sparta, died Wednesday morning, August 11, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. He is survived by his wife, Rose Lee Brinegar Sturgill of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Alice Clyde and Larry Spurlin of Havre de Grace, Maryland, Mary Jane “Janie” and Thomas White of State Road, Patricia and Perry White of North Wilkesboro, and Diane and William McGill of Laurel Springs; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie Lee and Elizabeth Murray of North Wilkesboro, and Gary Donald and Carolyn Sturgill of Sparta; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; special friends, Sandra, Don and Brian Mabe; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, August 13th, at the Sparta Church of God with Burial to follow in the New Salem Cemetery. Pastor Doug Combs will officiate. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 until 2 p.m. Friday. Family and friends may come by Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Friday morning from 11:00a.m.until 1:00 p.m.

STOLT Mr. Vernon E. Stolt, age 80, of 54 Irwin St., Sparta, NC, died Sunday afternoon, August 8, 2004, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernst and Olga Stolt; a son, Robert Emory Stolt; a grandson, Matthew Jerome Bergeson; and a brother, Eldon Stolt. On August 19, 2003, a flag was flown over the United States Capitol at the request of the Honorable Richard Burr, in recognition of Vernon’s outstanding service in the United States Army during World War II. In June, 2003, Vernon received a certificate from the Consulate General of France, and a medal, for his part in liberating France during World War II. He will again be honored on Thursday, August 12th by his local comrades. He is survived by his wife, Carol Kooker Stolt of the home; his children, Eve and Larry Adams of Florissant, Missouri, Brenda and Richard Ferrier of Verona, Wisconsin, Steve and Teresa Stolt of Sparta, Scott and Melissa Stolt of Kamrar, Iowa, Shelley Williams of Sparta, Sonny and Melissa Stolt of Michigan, Matthew L. Stolt of Michigan, and Susan Holdgrafer of Webster City, Iowa; his sisters, Elenor Krohn of Rochester, Minnesota, and Florence and Jim Blansham of Eyota, Minnesota; his brothers, Loren Stolt of Mankota, Minnesota, and Roger and Ellie Stolt of Campbellsport, Wisconsin; his grandchildren, Heath and Johnathon Adams of St. Louis, Missouri, Tika Munson of St. Louis, Missouri, Stephanie Stolt of Boone, NC, Samantha and Shannon Stolt of Sparta, Curtis and Hailey Stolt of Kamrar, Iowa, and John and Luke Bergeson of Webster City, Iowa; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 5:00 p.m. Thursday, August 12th at the Sparta Presbyterian Church with Burial in the Sparta Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie-in-state. Military rites will be conducted by the Bruce Wayne Osborne VFW Post #7034. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta.
