ATWOOD Mrs. Lillie Evans Atwood, age 93 of 140 Carson Blvd., Sparta, died Friday afternoon, January 28, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Kilby H. Atwood. She was born in Alleghany County, May 31, 1911 to the late Emmett and Cora Crouse Evans and was preceded in death by a daughter, Patsy Jones; two brothers, Roy and Robert Evans; and two sisters, Hazel Estep and Hattie Evans. She is survived by two sons, Boyden Atwood and wife, Gelene, of Boone; Rev. Larry Atwood and wife Joy, of Sparta; 10 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Oscar “Doc” Evans of Sparta; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 31st at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Antioch Cemetery in the Stratford Community. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to The Gideons International, P.O. CLARK Mabel Knox Clark, age 57, of 179 Combs St, Sparta, NC, died Saturday, January 22, 2005 at Sunbridge of Alleghany. She is survived by a daughter, Teresa Clark Graves (Ricky), of Pearl River,Louisiana; her mother, Louvenia Knox of Albemarle, NC; three grandchildren; two sisters, Jewel Rankin of Bronx, New York, and Surretha Gramling of New London, NC; and a brother, Willie Knox of Brooklyn, New York. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Friday, January 28th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sparta Cemetery. The family will gather at the funeral home at 1:00 p.m. Friday.

DUKE Avis Irene Fender Duke, age 87 of 179 Combs St. Sparta, NC, died Saturday morning, January 22, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was born June 15, 1917, in Iowa, the third of seven children of the late, Everett and Maude E. Fender of Alleghany County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Berge M. Duke; two sisters, Bea M. Fender of California, and Marjorie L. Caudill of Sparta; and a brother, Ronald V. Fender of Morganton. She is survived by a son, Abel A. Fosten; ne’ Darwin D. Lehigh, of Oakland, California; three sisters, Lois M. Busic and Elaine D. Choate of Sparta, and Carol Jean Felts of McGrady; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held for Mrs. Duke at a later date. She will be interred at the Chestnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery beside her husband, mother, father and sister. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the Duke family.

EDWARDS Mrs. Retha Marie Sparks Edwards, age 72, of 4660 US Hwy 18N, Sparta, died Friday morning, January 21, 2005, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born in Alleghany County to the late George and Vena Edward Sparks, and was preceded in death by a son, Frank Thomas Edwards. She is survived by her husband, Loyd Edwards of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Rocky Johnson of Sparta; a son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Sodonia Edwards of Hillsville, VA; two grandsons, Chris and Matthew Johnson; a brother and sister-in-law, Clarence Edward and Phyllis Sparks of Sparta; one niece; and several nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 24th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home.

CAUDILL Mrs. Alda Osborne Caudill, age 86, of Middle River, Maryland, died Monday, January 17, 2005, at Mariner Health Care in Bel Air, MD. She was the widow of Talmage Caudill and was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Helen Caudill; a son, Harold Don Caudill; a daughter, Janice Tickle; sisters, Dorothy Young and Nora Phipps; and brothers, Glenn and Guy Osborne. She was born in the Turkey Knob Community of Alleghany County on September 12, 1918, to the late J.B. and Margie Johnson Osborne. She retired from Glen L. Martin Company in Bel Air, MD. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Nancy Caudill of White Hall, Maryland; seven grandchildren; 34 great and great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Blanche Pugh and husband Dent, Rose Osborne, all of Piney Creek; a brother, Jessie Mack Osborne and wife June of Independence, VA; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 20th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Osborne Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Osborne Memorial Cemetery Fund, c/o Burton Osborne, 150 Burton Lane, Piney Creek, NC 28663.

KING Edna Rae Smith King, age 83, of 164 Lucas St., Sparta, died Thursday evening, January 13, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She is survived by a daughter, Sharon Jansen and husband, James, of Jackson, Michigan; three grandchildren, Steve Enfinger of Florida, Cathy Phillips of Michigan, and Alissa Jansen of Chicago; two great-grandchildren, Brittany and Jacob Enfinger; and a special cousin, Thomas B. Smith and wife Hazel Dean, of Piney Creek. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 16th at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church at Piney Creek. The cremated remains will be interred in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends and share a meal at the church following the services. The family request that any food be taken to the church rather than the home. Grandview Memorial Funeral Home of Sparta is serving the King family.

ATWOOD Mrs. Naomi Roten Atwood, age 87, of 3600 Hwy 21N, Sparta, died Tuesday morning, January 11, 2005, at her home. She was the widow of Alvin Roby Atwood, and was preceded in death by a son, Dale Atwood. She is survived by a son, Dean Atwood of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ruby and Jack Ireson, Betty and Bill Shaw, all of Independence, VA; three grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Cleo Burchette of Mooresville; and several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, January 12th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Thursday, January 13th at the Roans Creek Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Hwy 88 W, Laurel Springs.

CANTLER Mr. Robert Edward "Ed" Cantler, age 69, of 58 Clydes Lane, Laurel Springs, NC, died Monday, January 10, 2005, at his home. He was preceded in death by a sister, Lousie Williams. He is survived by his wife, Imogene Brinegar Cantler of the home; four daughters and sons-in-law, Norma and Thomas Billings, Terry and Mark Sine, all of Wilkesboro, Jeanette and Jay Franc of Baltimore, MD, and Lisa and Mike Kenney of Sykesville, MD; a son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Michelle Cantler of Belcamp, MD; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Virginia Lenord of Aberdeen, MD; and four brothers, Charles and Paul Cantler of Abingdon, MD, Arthur Cantler of Aberdeen, MD and Gene Autry Cantler of Fieldale, VA. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 12th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the New Salem Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the funeral home.

JOYCE Leanora S. Joyce went home to the Lord on Tuesday morning, ending her two year battle with cancer. She had been staying at the home of her son, Jack, in Waxhaw, NC. She had spent a lively Christmas with her family, held her great grandson and faced the end of her life with grace and a sense of humor. Following the death of her husband in 1979, she moved to Alleghany County, NC, where she made her home for the past 25 years. Leanora loved the beauty of the mountains and enjoyed her many wonderful friends in Sparta, especially those at Sparta Presbyterian Church. Leanora was born in Sunbury, PA on July 19, 1927 to Leland Kimble Simons and Leanora Walker Simons. She spent her childhood years in Pottstown, PA and attended college at Farmville State Teachers College in Farmville, Va. Leanora’s family moved to Sanford, NC where she met and married R. Frank Joyce, III. Frank and Leanora’s marriage produced four sons who survive her, Robert F. (Bob) Joyce IV and his wife Bridget of Sanford, Leland S. (Jack) Joyce and his wife Barbara of Waxhaw, David H. Joyce of Monroe and Allan G. Joyce of Air-a-bellows Gap. She is also survived by her twin brother, Leland K. Simons and his wife Sharon of Sparta; her grandson Jack Jr.; and his wife Karen and their new son Walker; and five granddaughters, Elizabeth, Lauren, Meredith, Nolan and Maggie. Also, she is survived by a large and loving family of brothers and sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A funeral service will be held at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Sanford at 11:30 AM on Saturday, January 8. Burial will be at Buffalo Cemetery in Sanford. The family will greet friends in the church parlor one hour prior to the service. Bridges and Cameron Funeral Home are handling arrangements. A memorial service to celebrate her life will also be held at Sparta Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM. Memorials may be made to Sparta Presbyterian Church, P.O. POOLE Mr. Larry Gayle Poole, age 54, of 2495 Old Barrett Rd., Ennice, NC; died Sunday, January 2, 2005, at the Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. He is survived by a son, Stevie Poole of Ennice; a daughter, Krystal Poole of Ennice; two grandchildren; a sister Alfajean Brooks of Sparta; and a brother, Cleo Poole of Piney Creek. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 5th at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Saddle Mountain Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

SHEPHERD Mrs. Lessie Osborne Shepherd, age 85, of 540 George Shepherd Road, Laurel Springs, died Sunday evening, January 2, 2005, at her home. She was the daughter of the late Lando and Anne Tucker Osborne, and was the widow of George Shepherd. She was also preceded in death by her son, Edwin Shepherd; a granddaughter, Cassie Thompson; a sister, Bonnie Lee Osborne; and brothers, Wayne and Ray Osborne. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Jarvis Dickens of Laurel Springs; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Jewell Presnell of Laurel Springs; daughter-in-law, Earlene Shepherd of Laurel Springs; and brother-in-law, Worth Shepherd of Laurel Springs. Several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, January 5th at the Bellview Missionary Baptist Church at Laurel Springs. Burial will follow in the Cranberry Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral services to lie in state. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Bellview Missionary Baptist Church, c/o Dot Brooks, 4084 Walnut Branch Church Road, Sparta, NC 28675, or Hospice of Ashe County, NC Highway 88, Jefferson, NC 28640.
