LATTIMORE - Miss Mary Elizabeth Willis, 87, of Lattimore, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at Century Care of Cherryville.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Daisy Lillian Hunt and Ivey Willis. She was a teacher in Rutherford, Cleveland and Mecklenburg counties. She attended Meredith College and was a graduate of Appalachian State University and was a member of Central United Methodist Church of Shelby.
A graveside service will be today at 2 p.m. at Mount Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery with Dr. Joe Reeves officiating.
Memorials may be made to the organization of the donor's choice.
Lutz-Austell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Cordie Calhoun
RUTHERFORDTON - Mrs. Cordie Sluder Calhoun, 93, of 350 Rucker Road, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Crowe Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Alan Beard, Wade Ogle and Harold Thompson officiating.
Burial will follow at Round Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at Crowe Funeral Home.

Ray Reep
CONNELLY SPRINGS - Mr. Ray Reep, 59, of 4869 Rocky Ridge Road, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at his home.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. J.C. Bradley officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family received friends Thursday at Stamey Funeral Home.

Rachel Phillips
HENRIETTA - Ms. Rachel Dee Phillips, 59, of Henrietta, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at Autumn Care Corp. of Forest City.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Thompson Brothers Funeral Home of Forest City.

James Suttles
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. James Abraham Suttles, 72, of 816 Grace St., died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Waynesville, he was the son of the late Faye Ruff and Frank Suttles. He was a supervisor for Rauch Industries and was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Mandy Medford Suttles.
He is survived by two daughters, Sheila Suttles of McAdenville and Janice Martin of Kings Mountain; a son, James Suttles of Kings Mountain; a brother, Joe Ray Suttles of Waynesville; a sister, Frances Mills Greene of Kings Mountain; two grandsons, William E. Martin Jr. and James David Suttles, both of Kings Mountain; a granddaughter, April Dawn Martin of Kings Mountain; and a great-granddaughter, Hidi Edna Greene of Kings Mountain.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. David Chapman officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at 3:30 p.m. at Maple Grove Cemetery in Waynesville.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services and at other times at 146 Rollingbrook Road, Kings Mountain.

CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Mae Sorrels Beam, 96, of 3355 Eaker Road, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at Carolina Care Center.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Stien officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Carpenter's Funeral Home.

Callie Burgess
CAROLEEN - Mrs. Callie Mae Owensby Burgess, 81, of Caroleen, died Friday, June 16, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
A graveside service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Caroleen-Henrietta Cemetery with the Rev. Wade Huntley officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Harrelson Funeral Home.

Clyde Jolley
CLIFFSIDE - Mr. Clyde Jolley, 71, of 161 Washington St., died Friday, June 16, 2000, at his home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Burwell and Louella Jones Jolley. He was a retired supervisor with Cone Mills, Cliffside Plant and was a former employee of McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home. He was a member of Cliffside Baptist Church, Ellenboro W.O.W. and an auxiliary member of Rutherford County Rescue Crew. He was the former president of the Tri Community Little League and the Chase High Football Boosters Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Jolley.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Bridges Jolley of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Charles and Kathy Jolley of Luray, Va., Gary and Elizabeth Jolley of Boiling Springs, and Larry and Cindy Jolley of Easley, S.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Roger Stephens of Cliffside; two sisters, Blanche Jolley and Aileene Jolley both of Mooresboro; seven grandchildren, Richard Stephens, Lara Tan, Sara Peterson, Krissy Stephens, Ashley Jolley, Chris Jolley and Jonathon Jolley; and two great-grandchildren, Richard Stephens and Nicole Stephens.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Cliffside Baptist Church with the Rev. William Stroud officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.

Lisa Campbell
CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Lisa Cornwell Campbell, 37, died Thursday, June 15, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Hickory, she was born May 18, 1963, the daughter of Annie Cornwell of Fayetteville and the late Fred L. Cornwell Sr. She attended Hickory High and Fisk University. She was employed by USAirways.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Dorian Campbell of the home; three brothers and a sister-in-law, Fred Cornwell Jr., Paul Cornwell, and William D. and Lucia Cornwell and their two children, William Cornwell and Christopher Cornwell, all of Hickory; one sister and brother-in-law, Linda C. and LaWayne Whitfield of Fayetteville and their children, Crystal Whitfield, Whitney Whitfield, Lanel Whitfield and Beverly Whitfield.
A memorial service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of Withrow's Funeral Home in Kings Mountain with Elder William Workman officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Cemetery in Shelby.

Fred Hopper
LAWTON, Okla. - Mr. Fred L. Hopper, 43, died Wednesday, June 14, 2000, at his home.
A native of Boiling Springs, he was born July 27, 1956, the son of the late Boyce and Carrie Dillingham Hopper.
He graduated from Burns High School in 1974. He served on the Cannon Crew in the U.S. Army, where he was active for 20 years.
In the military, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, an Army Achievement Medal, an Army Good Conduct Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, two Kuwait Liberation Medals, a Southwest Asia Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, Noncommissioned Officer's Professional Development Ribbon with numeral three, an Army Service Ribbon, an Oversee Service Award, and an Expert Marksmanship Qualification Badge with Rifle Bar. He retired from the military as a staff sergeant in 1996.
He was a customer service representative at Wal-Mart Branch of City National Bank, Lawton.
He was a member of Saint John's Missionary Baptist Church of Lawton and Eskridge Grove Baptist Church in Shelby, as well as the Masonic Lodge and the Lions Club of Lawton.
He is survived by his wife, Rosie Locklin of the home whom he married on April 26, 1985, in Shelby; two sons, Marquis Locklin and Quavis Locklin of the home; one daughter, Tia Petty of Atlanta; one brother, Larry Hopper of Kings Mountain; two adopted brothers, Thomas Thompson of Shelby and Darryl Ellis of Hollywood, Fla.; three sisters, Debra Morgan and Valarie Coleman of Kings Mountain and Pat McCaskill of Gastonia; two adopted sisters, Brenda Jeter of Shelby and Vanessa Gentry of Winston-Salem; and one aunt, Theodosia Lawrence of Belwood.
The funeral will be Wednesday, June 21, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Eskridge Baptist Church in Shelby. Burial will follow at Eskridge Grove Cemetery.
Another funeral will be today at 10 a.m. at Lawton Ritter Gray Funeral Home in Lawton with the Rev. Turner of Saint John's Missionary Baptist Church officiating.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service in Shelby and other times at 3391 Marshall Wolf Road in Kings Mountain.
Withrow's Funeral Home in Kings Mountain is in charge of arrangements.

Bobby Dale Hunt
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Mr. Bobby Dale Hunt, 47, died Tuesday, June 6, 2000 at his home.
Born in North Carolina Jan. 30, 1953, he grew up in Lincoln County. He graduated from West Lincoln High School in 1971 and attended the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He was a member of Laurel Hill United Methodist Church in Vale. At the time of his death, he was employed in sales in North Palm Beach, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Ike Sain. He grew up working in his grandfather's country store in Vale. He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Dovie and Broadus Hunt of Casar.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Faye and Ted Brittain of Shelby; his father and stepmother, Bob and Mary Ann Hunt of Vale; his maternal grandmother, Carrie Sain of Vale; a sister, Sherry Hunt of Morganton; two stepsisters and their husbands, Melanie and Ed Hamrick and Cathy and Gene Smith, all of Shelby; a stepbrother, Michael Davis of Jacksonville, Fla.; two nephews, Trey Ross and Derek Ross of Morganton; one stepnephew, Tripp Smith of Shelby; and two stepnieces, Brittany Hamrick and Lauren Hamrick of Shelby.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston, with the Rev. George Burton officiating. An interpreter will be provided for the deaf. The family will receive friends after the service.
Instead of flowers, the family requests memorials to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 4390, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27515-4390, or to Laurel Hill United Methodist Church, in care of Nelson Yarbro, 8364 West N.C. 27, Vale, N.C. 28168.

Robert Bright
SHELBY - Mr. Robert C. Bright, 81, of Autumn Years Retirement Center, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Till and Annie Hamrick Bright. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Shelby.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Guynell Coffey Bright; his second wife, Buner Toney Bright; and two sons, Walter Bright and Ricky Bright.
He is survived by a daughter, Joanne Byrd of Mooresboro; a brother, Bill Bright of Gaffney, S.C.; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held today at 2 p.m. at Duncan's Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Rutherford County, with the Rev. Harold Fite officiating.
No formal visitation is planned.

Velma Homesley
CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Velma Craft Homesley, 90, of 334 South Pink St., died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Carolina Care Center in Cherryville.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Wayne Key and Perry Holleman officiating. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of Nell Parker, 503 Pine Grove Ave., Cherryville.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Murray A. "Ray" King Jr., of 1514 North Piedmont Ave., died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Putnam Memorial Baptist Church in Shelby, with the Rev. Mark Canipe officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Harris Funeral Home.

Edith Walker
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Edith Elva Walker, 73, of 306 Gross Gin Drive, formerly of 2603 East Cherokee St., Blacksburg, S.C., died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at Spartanburg (S.C.) Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church, with Dr. Charlie Barnard and Chaplain Pat Gosnell officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at White Columns Funeral Service in Blacksburg.

William Stamey
GREENSBORO - Mr. William Keith Stamey, 63, of 1003 Westminster Drive, formerly of Lexington and Shelby, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Wake Forest University Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Born in Cleveland County Feb. 24, 1937, he was a son of the late C. Warner and Linda Bridges Stamey. He graduated from Wake Forest College in 1959 with a degree in business. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity and stayed involved in alumni affairs at Wake Forest University. A captain in the Army, he served 10 years, four in Naples, Italy. After his discharge, he returned to Greensboro and joined the family business, Stamey's Barbecue. At the time of his death, he was president of Stamey's Inc.
He is survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Charles C. and Patsy Stamey; nieces, Beverly Brown and her husband, Barry, and Elizabeth Allen and her husband, Brian, all of Greensboro; nephews, Jeffrey Hodgin of Durham, Michael Hodgin and his wife, Susanne, of Colora, Md., and Chip Stamey and his wife, Liza, of Greensboro; and numerous cousins and aunts.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church, 2300 West Friendly Ave., Greensboro. The Revs. Brian C. Allen and Ellis Rouse of Centenary United Methodist Church and the Rev. Bob Henderson of Westminster Presbyterian Church will officiate.
The family will receive friends in the church parlor immediately following the service.
Memorials may be made to the donor's charity of choice.

Garland Lowery Sr.
ELLENBORO - Mr. Garland Briscoe "Whitey" Lowery Sr., 70, of 727 Lake Davis Road, died Sunday, June 18, 2000, at the V.A. Medical Center in Asheville.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Samuel and Cora Lee Wilkerson Lowery. He was retired from the U.S. Marines after 20 years of service. He served two tours of duty as a recruiter, recruiting several local men. He was the former owner of Lowery Concrete Construction Co. and was founder of the Pony League in Bristol, and the Lowery Field was named in his honor. He was active in Boy Scouts, a member of Hollis Masonic Lodge, Shriners, W.O.W. and Corinth Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Hazel Gallion Lowery of the home; two sons, Garland "Pete" Lowery Jr. of Bostic and Douglas Lowery of Ellenboro; two daughters, Pamela Mathis of Ellenboro and Jill Lowery of Gastonia; four grandchildren, Cory Lowery, Joel Lowery, Holly Mathis and Adam Mathis; one brother, Dewitt Lowery of Bostic; four sisters, Louise Swink and Bertie Spratt, both of Ellenboro, and Ruth Bailey and Doris Henson, both of Forest City.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. at Corinth Baptist Church with the Rev. Ad Hopper officiating.
The body will be placed at the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.
