James "Bill" Archie
SHELBY - Mr. James Roosevelt "Bill" Archie, 61, of 1831 Quail Run Drive, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., he was the son of the late Roosevelt and Mapilpa Lockhart Archie. He was employed at Cone Mill as a air condition correnator and was a member of Hoppers Chapel Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde R. Archie; and five sisters, Gurturde A. Blair, Magerratt A. Huskey and Doris A. Adams, Betty D. Gill and Virginia Watson; and one great-grandchild, Mircal P. Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Ida Hopper Archie; four sons, Jerry Hopper, Thomas Hopper, James Archie and Stephen Archie, all of Shelby; a daughter, Lora A. Archie of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Ruby N. Archie of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, Ernest V. and "Lula" Archie of Georgia; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Hester V. Archie of Cleveland, Ohio, Elizabeth Morgan of Shelby and Ruby and Bishop O.B. Brintley of Grover; 12 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Hoppers Chapel Baptist Church with the Rev. Wilbur Hines officiating.
The body will be placed in the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of visitation.
Burial will follow at Bethlehem Temple Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church and at other times at the home.

Juanita Peters
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Juanita Erwood Peters, 73, of Lincolnton, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at the Brian Center.
A native of Kings Mountain, she was the daughter of the late W.L. Erwood and Gertrude Jones. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Danny K. Payne and her brother, Carl Creedmore.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jean Marie and Tim L. Porter of Virginia Beach, Va.; two grandchildren, Michael Porter and Nathan Porter, both of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Jennie Erwood Lynn and Jane Erwood Martin, both of Kings Mountain; and nine nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be at a later date at Mountain Rest Cemetery.

Otis McDowell Jr.
FOREST CITY - Mr. Otis Alex McDowell Jr., of 220 McGinnis Road, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at Mount Pisgah United Church of God with Elder Jessie Banner officiating.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

S.A. Lankford Sr.
BELMONT - The Rev. S.A. Lankford Sr., 73, formerly of Cleveland County, died Thursday, June 29, 2000 at Watauga Medical Center in Boone.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Linwood Church of God in Gastonia with the Revs. Bobby Brackett and James P. Griffin and Dr. Ken Hensley officiating.
Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery in Shelby.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Linwood Church of God in Gastonia.

Deannie Milline
New York, N.Y. - Ms. Deannie Milline, 69, of 126 West 83rd St., Apt. 5-P, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at Lenox Hospital Manhatten.
A native of Shelby, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Nishie Milline. She was employed with the City of New York.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Lillian Dawkins.
She is survived by a friend, Andrew Jacobs of New York; a daughter, Dena McDowell of Hickory; a brother, Welton Milline of New York, N.Y.; three sisters, Golden Milline of Shelby, Dorothy Milline of New York and Hermine Costes of Trevois, Penn.; two aunts, Syldia Mauney and Mabel Lipscomb, both of Lawndale; a grandson, Spencer Milline of Hickory; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
The funeral will be Saturday at noon at Genesis Chapel with the Rev. Gary Smith officiating.
Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The body will be placed in the chapel from 8 a.m. until the time of visitation.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the chapel.

Gaither Hartgrove Jr.
SHELBY - Mr. Gaither Hartgrove Jr., 69, of 622 N. Post Road, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at his home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Gaither Hartgrove and Ella Bell Degree.
He is survived by one brother, Wilbert Hartgrove of Shelby; one sister, Willie Hartgrove of the home; one uncle, Pink Bell Jr. of Shelby; and one aunt, Zannie Bell of Shelby.
A graveside service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Webb Memorial Lawns with the Rev. Thomas McCluney officiating.
Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Bettye Withrow
KINGSTOWN - Mrs. Bettye Jamerson Withrow, 65, of 2132 Kingston Road, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at her home.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Rosa Mae Jamerson. She graduated from Cleveland High School and attended Knoxville College. She retired after 25 years of service with Hoescht Celanese Corp. as a lab analyst. She served as Southwestern District President of the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service, and was an Audacian Club Sister, a member of the Foothills Herb Society, Chief Judge of the Board of Elections, a member of the board of the American Red Cross Cleveland County chapter and the Nancy Wilson Mission Group, and co-founder of Kingstown Senior Citizens.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three children, Carolyn Withrow, Clarence Withrow II and Gregory Withrow.
She is survived by her husband, Clarence Withrow; two daughters, Sharon Withrow and Karen Withrow of Charlotte; a son, Raven Guest of Grover; a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Guest; three grandchildren, Brian Withrow of Charlotte, Tina Guest of Grover and Tamisha Holland of Raleigh; two sisters, Joan J. Davis of Shelby and Rebecca J. Cabaniss of Minneapolis, Minn.; four brothers, Jerry Jamerson of Raleigh, Thomas Jamerson of Brooklyn, N.Y., Charles Jamerson of Shelby and Larry Jamerson of Greensboro; two great-uncles, Everett Camp and Bill Camp; and a host of relatives and friends.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Eskridge Grove Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. C.D. Montgomery officiating. The body will be placed in the church at noon. The family will observe quiet time at the church at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

GROVER - Mr. Jack D. "J.D." Upchurch, 67, of 106 McGinnis Drive, formerly of Kings Mountain, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

SHELBY - Mrs. Kathy Lynn Honeycutt Simmons, 40, of 1932 Gaffney Road, died Sunday, June 25, 2000, at her home.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of Lloyd Jr. and Margaret Miller Honeycutt of Boiling Springs. She was a former textile worker and a member of Main Street Baptist Church in Spindale.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a daughter, Krystal Lynn Roemer of Kings Mountain; a brother, Jeffrey Honeycutt of Boiling Springs; and a sister, Janet Hunnicutt of Ellenboro.
The funeral will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home with the Revs. Bo Wagner and Bill Alley officiating.
Burial will follow at Round Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

FOREST CITY - Mrs. Alma Florence Lancaster Bland, 81, of 2350 Hudlow Road, died Monday, June 26, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.

Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

James "J.C." Freeman
SHELBY - Mr. James Clarence "J.C." Freeman, 76, of 322-1 Patton Drive, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at Hospice at Wendover.
A native of Great Falls, S.C., he was the son of the late Clarence William and Bernice Stelle Freeman. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 26 years. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was a former deacon and a secretary for 43 years at Churchhill Drive Baptist Church. He served in the Army during World War II in the 276th Field Armor Battalion. He received the American Theater Campaign Medal, the Eamet Campaign Medal with five bronze service stars, the Good Conduct Medal and a Victory Medal.
He was survived by his wife, Olive Flora Carroll Freeman of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Wayne Bridges, Pam and Steve Patton and Robin and Teddy Dover, all of Shelby; three grandsons, Jason Patterson and his wife, Stephanie, Jeremy Bridges and his fiancee, Laura Potts, and Joshua Hamrick, all of Shelby; two granddaughters, Leslie Faulkenberry and her husband, Tommy of Rock Hill, S.C., and Katie Hamrick of Shelby.
The funeral will be Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Sorrells and Dr. Pat Correll and Fred Towery officiating. Entombment will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.

SHELBY - Mr. Dennis Howe Bailey, 52, of 750 Pleasantdale Drive, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, in Lafayette, La.
A memorial service will be held in Connecticut.

FOREST CITY - Mr. Darious Carpenter, 85, of 321 Horn Bottom Road, died Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Well Spring United Methodist Church in Forest City with the Rev. Alvin Brown officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.

'Bill' Holler
NEWTON - Mr. William "Bill" Lee Holler, 73, died Thursday, Oct. 18, at his home.
A native of Catawba County, he was born Aug. 2, 1928, the son of the late Eslie and Lela Hawn Holler. He was retired from Hickory City Schools and was a former employee of R.J. Shell & Son Texaco Distributor. He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Gordon Holler and Osborne Holler; and a sister, Vivian Wittenberg.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice S. Holler of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Anne and Dennis White of Shelby and Leslie and Michael Wright of Bethlehem; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Brent and Ava Holler of Asheville, Mark Holler of Washington, D.C., and Bruce Holler of Claremont; a sister, Charlotte Simmons of Hickory; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Norman Hollar of Conover and Wayne and Mable Hollar of Newton; two grandsons, Josh White and his wife, Kimberly, of Shelby and William Holler of Claremont; and two granddaughters, Emily White of Charlotte and Laura Holler of Claremont.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m at Concordia Lutheran Church in Conover with the Revs. Donald R. Oldenburg and Viacar David Hunze officiating. Burial will be in Catawba Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Pallbearers are Bill Hoke, Hoy Holler, Norman Hollar, Wayne Hollar, Josh White and James Hawn.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the church.

'Dick' Reynolds
LAWNDALE - Mr. Paulie William "Dick" Reynolds, 77, of 3449 Charlie Elliott Road, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at VA Medical Center in Asheville.
A native of Burke County, he was born May 7, 1924, the son of the late John Joseph and Rosalia Hilderbran Reynolds. He was retired from maintenance at JP Stevens and Cooksville Hosiery Mill. He was a member of Polkville VFW No. 8030. He served in the Army in the 737 Tank Battalion during World War II in the European Theater.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Madge Ruth McNeilly Reynolds; a son, Dennis Reynolds; a brother, A.E. "Joe" Reynolds; and two sisters, Beatrice Pons and Bonnie Walker.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Malcolm and Dot Reynolds of Gastonia; a grandson and his wife, Chad and Allison Reynolds of Lawndale; two granddaughters, Susan Reynolds Johnson and her husband, Matt, of Huntersville and Janet Reynolds of Gastonia; two brothers, Vance Reynolds of Valdese and Johnny Reynolds of Connelly Springs; three sisters, Pauline Rudisell of Vale and Lena Hoyle and Josie Brittain, both of Connelly Springs; and a great-granddaughter, Catilynn Reynolds.
The funeral will be today at 2:30 p.m. at Polkville Baptist Church with the Revs. Alton Martin and Max Burgin officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery with military graveside rites by the Lawndale American Legion Post No. 302. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.

VALE - Mr. Walter "Jr." Lee Bivens, 66, of 2415 Peeler Road, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001.

'Gene' Davis
ELLENBORO - Mr. Edgar Eugene "Gene" Davis, 76, died Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at St. Luke Hospital in Columbus.
He was a lifetime member of Mount Olivet Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. He was retired from McLean Trucking and was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his parents, W.Z. and Janie Waters Davis, and his son, Milton Edgar Davis.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Aylene Bridges Davis; seven grandchildren, William and Barbie Davis, Shanna and Aaron Boone and David and Kim Davis, all of Ellenboro, and Janie Davis of Hollywood, Fla.; and six great-grandchildren, Chris Davis, Justin Davis, Mark Davis, Roxy Boone, David Davis II and Kelsey Buckner, all of Ellenboro.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Mount Olivet Baptist Church with the Revs. Jimmy Black and Gerald Porter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The pallbearers will be Will Davis, David Davis, Chris Davis, Aaron Boone, Alan Toney and Adam Davis.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home, Shelby.

FOREST CITY - The Rev. R. J. Hogan, 78, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
A private funeral will be held. The family will receive friends today from 3 to 5 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home in Caroleen.

George Hammett
FOREST CITY - Mr. George Alfred Hammett, 73, of 162 Robinhood Drive, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. David Hughes Hobson and Wendy Therrell officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.

Max Davis
SHELBY - Mr. Max Wilson Davis, 68, of 1300 W. Zion Church Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at his home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the owner of Max Davis Carpet Co. Inc., formerly Perry Carpet Co., where he retired after 43 years. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. He also served as chairman of the house and grounds for many years and was chairman of the 1993 building committee. He was a charter member of Shelby Life Saving and Rescue Unit and the treasurer of the rescue unit for years. He received a lifetime membership for serving 20 years with the rescue Ssr of Zion Church's First Scout Troop, then in the early 1970s, he became an assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 118. In 1976, he became Scoutmaster and held the position until his death. During his time as Scoutmaster, he received awards including the Silver Beaver Award, Scoutmaster Award of Merit presented to him by the president of the Boy Scouts and the National Eagle Scout Association. He received the Good Shepherd Emblem from Zion Church and the Piedmont Council. During his time as a Scoutmaster, 36 boys received the Eagle Scout Award. He served in the Army from 1954 to 1955 with the Engineering Unit in Newfoundland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Crayton and Beatrice Cabiniss Davis.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Mooney Davis of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Woody Fish of Durham and Sherrie and Terry Clark of Shelby; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark Wilson and Shannon Grigg Davis of Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Beth Tallent Gold and Hugh Gold of Shelby; three grandsons, Branden Templeton and Patrick Fish, both of Durham, and Wesley Clark of Shelby; two granddaughters, Mattie Clark and Mary Beth Davis, both of Shelby; a nephew and niece, Raymond and Kathy Mooney, both of Pensacola, Fla.
The funeral will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Russell Fitts and Dr. Randy Bridges officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Cleveland Funeral Services and other times at the home.

Almer Morrow
MOORESBORO - Mrs. Almer Campbell Morrow, 72, of 228 Grover Scriggs Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Bob and Mary Elizabeth Ruppe Campbell. She was retired from Cone Mills and was a Baptist.
She is survived by a son, George Morrow of Shelby; four daughters, Barbara Putnam and Peggy Lovelace, both of Forest City, Rebecca Green of Mooresboro and Kay Dotson of Rutherfordton; a brother, James T. Campbell of Mooresboro; two sisters, Etta Mae Harris of Forest City and Carrie Whelchel of Mooresboro; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home in Cliffside with the Rev. Bobby West officiating. Burial will follow in Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery.

J.M. Hubbard
ELLENBORO - Mr. J.M. Hubbard, 84, of 3937 Hollis Road, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Fair Haven Home.
A native of Rutherford County, he served in the Army during World War II and was a member of Big Springs Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was also a member of Hopewell Ruritan Club. He was retired from A.G. Industries.
He was preceded in death by a grandchild, Talena Priddy.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Beaver Hubbard; two sons and a daughter-in-law, James Dennis Hubbard and Jimmy Ray and Terri Hubbard, all of Ellenboro; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Everett Priddy of Lancaster, Ky.; three grandchildren and their spouses; Justin Ray Hubbard, Tamra and Louis Coffman and Tanya Priddy; a great-grandchildren, Seth Logue; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Big Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Lawton Neilly, Phil Bailey and Everett Priddy officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
