James "J.C." Freeman
SHELBY - Mr. James Clarence "J.C." Freeman, 76, of 322-1 Patton Drive, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at Hospice at Wendover.
A native of Great Falls, S.C., he was the son of the late Clarence William and Bernice Stelle Freeman. He was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 26 years. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and was a former deacon and a secretary for 43 years at Churchhill Drive Baptist Church. He served in the Army during World War II in the 276th Field Armor Battalion. He received the American Theater Campaign Medal, the Eamet Campaign Medal with five bronze service stars, the Good Conduct Medal and a Victory Medal.
He was survived by his wife, Olive Flora Carroll Freeman of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Wayne Bridges, Pam and Steve Patton and Robin and Teddy Dover, all of Shelby; three grandsons, Jason Patterson and his wife, Stephanie, Jeremy Bridges and his fiancee, Laura Potts, and Joshua Hamrick, all of Shelby; two granddaughters, Leslie Faulkenberry and her husband, Tommy of Rock Hill, S.C., and Katie Hamrick of Shelby.
The funeral will be Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Sorrells and Dr. Pat Correll and Fred Towery officiating. Entombment will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, N.C. 28150 or Westwood Heights Baptist Church, church building fund, P.O. Box 2550, Shelby, N.C. 28151.

FOREST CITY - Mr. Daniel P. Deck, of Phillips Drive, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Crowe Mortuary.

RUTHERFORDTON - Mr. John Hunter, of Broyhill Road, died Friday, June 30, 2000, in Dallas, Texas.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Crowe Mortuary.

Dennis Bailey
SHELBY - Mr. Dennis Howe Bailey, 52, of 750 Pleasantdale Drive, died Wednesday, June 28, 2000, in Lafayette, La.
A memorial service will be held in Connecticut.
Stamey Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Ola Goforth
MOORESBORO - Mrs. Ola Gardner Blanton Goforth, 80, of 416 W. Main St., died Friday, June 30, 2000, at her home.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Gorcy Chever and Bulah Poston Blanton. She was a sales clerk with F.W. Woolworth and Belk stores and was a member of the Sandy Run Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Burton Blanton Martin, and two brothers, Marcus Blanton and Burrell Blanton.
She is survived by her husband, Clyde Goforth of the home; one son, Jerry Goforth of Cheraw, S.C.; one daughter, Linda G. Wilson of Shelby; two sisters, Ruth Blanton Wilkie of Gastonia and Jeanette Blanton McKnight of Belmont; four grandchildren, Chris Wilson, Andy Wilson, Meghan Goforth and Lauren Goforth.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Sandy Run Baptist Church with the Rev. Tim Hendrick officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church.
McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home in Cliffside is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Harley Costner
INDIAN TRAIL - Mr. Harley Lee Costner, 78, formerly of Kings Mountain, died Friday, June 30, 2000, at Lake Park Health Care in Indian Trail.
He was the son of the late Marshall A. and Sallie Hullender Costner.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Myrtle C. Costner and Becky Riddie Costner.
He is survived by his son, Marshall Costner of Pineville; two step sons, John Riddle of Columbia, S.C., and Manuel Costner; three brothers, Everett Costner of Rockingham, Archie Costner of Spartanburg, S.C. and Loy Costner of St. Joseph, Mo.; two sisters, Nell C. Falls and Dorothy C. Champion, both of Kings Mountain; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at McEwen Funeral Home in Monroe. Burial will follow in Monroe.
The family will receive friends two hours before the service at the funeral home.
Harris Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Juanita Peters
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Juanita Erwood Peters, 73, of Lincolnton, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, at the Brian Center.
A native of Kings Mountain, she was the daughter of the late W.L. Erwood and Gertrude Jones Erwood. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Danny K. Payne and her brother, Carl Creedmore.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jean Maire and Tim L. Porter of Virginia Beach, Va.; two grandchildren, Michael Porter and Nathan Porter, both of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Jennie Erwood Lynn and Jane Erwood Martin, both of Kings Mountain; and nine nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be at a later date at Mountain Rest Cemetery.
Harris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Agnes Young
RUTHERFORDTON - Mrs. Agnes Outler Young, of Moultrie, Ga., formerly of Chimney Rock Road, Rutherfordton, died Friday, June 23, 2000, at Brownwood Nursing Center in Moultrie, Ga.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Padgett & King Mortuary Chapel. Burial will follow at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home.

ELLENBORO - Mrs. Lenora Peggy Gunter Powell, 79, of 828 Beams Mill Road, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at her home.
The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Neil Murray, David Jones and Kyle Fisher officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 9 at the funeral home.

CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Wilbur R. Craft, 84, of 707 East First St., died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at his home.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Cherryville, with the Rev. Jack Cooke officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home.

FOREST CITY - Mr. Daniel Paul Deck Sr., 73, of 110 Phillips Drive, died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Crowe's Funeral Chapel in Rutherfordton, with the Rev. H. D. Tate officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.

SHELBY - Mr. Lawrence Michael Thacker, 27, of 136 McBrayer Homestead Road, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

FOREST CITY - Mr. Arlon W. Carver, 73, of 134 Cooley Drive, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at White Oak Manor in Rutherfordton.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Foursquare Gospel Light Tabernacle in Forest City, with the Rev. Oscar Stalcup officiating. Burial will be in Caroleen-Henrietta Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harrelson Funeral Home in Caroleen.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Ms. Mary Mattie Carroll, 79, of 508 North Watterson St., died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at Kings Mountain Hospital.

RUTHERFORDTON - Mr. John Harvey Hunter, 58, of 811 Broyhill Road, died Friday, June 30, 2000 in Bonham, Texas.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Crowe's Funeral Chapel in Rutherfordton, with the Rev. Rick Brewer officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Prue Weaver Styers, 81, of 222 Fulton St., died Sunday, July 2, 2000, in Cherryville. The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel with the Revs. Charles Swicegood and Rudy Robinson officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Rest Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at the Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain and at other times at the home of a sister, Ruby Jenkins at 2246 Highway 150 West in Crouse.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Clauston Earl Bumgardner, 71, of Las Vegas, died Monday, July 3, 2000, in Las Vegas. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will also be in Las Vegas on Saturday at Community Lutheran Church. Burial will follow at Paradise Memorial Gardens in Las Vegas. The family will receive friends from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the service at Harris Funeral Home. Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain and Davis Paradise Valley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SHELBY - Mr. Lawrence Michael Thacker, 27, of 136 McBrayer Homestead Road, died Sunday, July 2, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center. A native of Orlando, Fla., he was the son of Irene Duffer of Spanish Fork, Utah, and James Kenser of Tampa, Fla. He was a carpet installer of Cleveland Floor Covering and a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Pauline Slay and Lawrence Thacker and his aunt, Patricia Ayers. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Michelle Thacker of the home; two daughters, Brandy Thacker and Megan Thacker of the home; his grandparents, Calvin and Pearl Cooper of Shelby; a sister, Jamie Kenser of Spanish Fork; a brother, Stephen Thacker of Spanish Fork; a friend, Ed Noggle of Shelby; and his mother-in-law, Gail Hollifield of the home. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel with pastor Robert A. Wagner officiating. Burial will follow at Lattimore Baptist Church Cemetery. FOREST CITY - Mrs. Virginia Moore Laney, 67, of 131 Second St., died Saturday, July 1, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Melchizedek and Tommie McDowell Moore. She was a life long member and past officer of Wells Spring United Methodist Church and retired from Dunbar Elementary School. She is survived by her husband, Robert Laney Jr. of the home; six daughters, Lucille M. Gantt of Charlotte, Stephanie L. Pepps of Taylors, S.C., Deborah L. Richard of Chesnee, S.C., Alicia Laney-Irwin of Spartanburg, S.C., Donna L. Bates of Moore, and DeAnn Laney of Forest City; two sons, Robert Olin Laney Sr. and Alan Ladd Laney, both of Forest City; three sisters, Frances McCombs of Augusta, Ga., Margaret Cantrell of Charlotte, and Elizabeth Rochester of Teanack, N.J.; a brother, Robert Moore of Cleveland, Ohio; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Wells Spring United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at The Brown Funeral Home of Greer, S.C. and Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church and at other times at the home, 131 Second St.
