Essie Hughes
SHELBY - Mrs. Essie Mae Murray Hughes, 91, of 3297 West Dixon Blvd., died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Fair Haven Nursing Center in Forest City.
A native of Rutherford county, she was the daughter of the late Mashall Murray and Georgianna Philbeck Murray McDaniel. She was a homemaker and a member of Corinth Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. A.C. Hughes; a son-in-law, Dr. Julius F. Jordan; two brothers, M.T. Murray and Clyde Murray; and two sisters, Lois Grayson and Ruby Hughes.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Katherine Hughes of Shelby, Henry and Libby Hughes of Tarboro, and Hal and Barbara Hughes of Rutherford College; a daughter, Jeannette Hughes Jordan of Raeford; a brother, Paul Murray of Ellenboro; three sisters, Belle Padgett of Ellenboro, Ola Melton and Inez Brooks, both of Rutherfordton; five sisters-in-law, Ruth Jones, Lucille Vassey, Heddy Sue Newton, Rachael Hardin and Loretta Bright; a brother-in-law, Louie Hughes; nine grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Corinth Baptist Church with the Revs. Ad Hopper and Terry Cagle officiating.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.

Dewitt Taylor
SHELBY - Mr. Raymond Dewitt Taylor, 84, of 404 Ross Grove Road East, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at his home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born February 23, 1916, the son of the late Raymond Taylor and Edna Love Taylor Thompson. He was an Army veteran serving in World War II and in the European Theater. He was retired after serving 40 years for the late Dr. John B. Hunter at the Hunter Clinic. He was a member at Wardell Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Willie Mae Black; his second wife, Pearlie Mae Dorsey Taylor; his stepfather, Baxter Thompson; and one sister; Annie Rue Taylor Wood.
He was survived by a daughter, Jacqueline Taylor Massey of Buffalo, N.Y.; a son, Raymond J. Taylor of Buffalo; two sisters, Mildred B. Thompson and Janie Thompson of Shelby; five nieces, Elma Ann Taylor Wright and Antionette Thompson, both of Shelby, Sheridan Thompson of West Palm Beach, Fla., Eleanor La Verne Logan of Lewisville and Gemma L. Thompson of Shelby; one nephew, Christopher Thompson of Shelby; five stepdaughters, Brenda D. Hardy, Gloria D. Smith, Vernie D. Smith, Shirley D. Moses and Mae D. Hayes, all of Shelby; one sister-in-law, Annie M. Dorsey of Shelby; one brother-in-law, Roscoe Clyde of Detroit; three grandchildren, Lynn Taylor, Raymond J. Taylor, Rochelle Harris, all of Buffalo; and a number of step-grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Saturday at noon at Wardell Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with the Rev. Luke Curry officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service and at other times at the home, 404 Ross Grove Road East.

Geraldine Freeman
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Geraldine L. Freeman, of 1401 Ledbetter Road, died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at Willow Ridge Nursing Center.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church, Spindale, with the Rev. Brown officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at the Freeman Family Cemetery in Bostic.
Thompson Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jean Kimball
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Jean Levesque Kimball, 55, of 133 Wilde Ave., died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Kanipe officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Harrelson Funeral Home.

Claudette Conner
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Claudette Jackson Conner, 56, of 111 Dover Ave., died Monday, July 3, 2000, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of Howard and Essie McFalls Jackson of Kings Mountain. She was a member of Family Worship Center, Church of God and former owner of Conner's 66 in Kings Mountain.
She was preceded in death by a son, Todd Conner.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Roger Conner of Kings Mountain; two sons, Jamie Green and Otis Dean Green Jr., both of Kings Mountain; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Larry and Pat Jackson, Harry and Elaine Jackson, and Sonny and Brenda Jackson, all of Kings Mountain and Jerry and Desiree Jackson of Dallas; and two grandchildren, Brittney Conner and Josh Greene.
The funeral will be today at 4 p.m. at Family Worship Center, Church of God with the Rev. Roger Woodard officiating.
Burial will follow at Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends two hours before the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to Family Worship Center, Church of God Building Fund, 1818 Shelby Road, Kings Mountain, N.C. 28086.

Julius Walker
DALLAS - Mr. Julius J. Walker, 69, of 1712 Mayberry Road, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.

Cora Mitchell
SHELBY - Mrs. Cora Freeman Mitchell, 61, of 212 Ramblewood Apartments, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at White Oak Manor in Shelby.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Genesis Funeral Service.

Elijah Waters IV
CASAR - Mr. Elijah Waters IV, 57, of 341 John Queen Road, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at his home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Elijah Waters III. He was a retired supervisor with PPG Industries and was a member of Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church where he was a Sunday School teacher and served as superintendent. He served in the Army during the Vietnam War.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a son, Matthew J. Waters.
He is survived by a two sons and his son's fiancée, Elijah Waters V and Dollie D'Errico of Glennallen, Ark., and Josh Waters of Casar; a daughter and son-in-law, Tracy and Charlie Bridges of Polkville; three brothers, Bill Waters, Sam Waters and Chet Waters, all of Casar; a sister, Peggy King of Casar; and a great-niece, Jessica Lynn Hudson.
The funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church with the Revs. Wayne Buff, Mike Harrill, and Jack Waters officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8:30 at Stamey Funeral Home.

Rae Williamson
SHELBY - Mrs. Rae J. Williamson of 860 W. Warren St., died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at Century Care of Gastonia.
Born in Cabarrus County, she was a daughter of the late James and Annie Henley Jones. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Pierce Williamson Sr.; a son, Charles Williamson; and a daughter, Sue Sherrill.
Surviving are a son, Pierce Williamson Jr. and wife, Rosemary, of Charlotte; a brother, Mike Jones of Concord; two sisters, Helen McPhatter of Charlotte and Betty Jean Patterson of Kannapolis; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rehobeth United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mary Carnes officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall.
Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Pauline Hood
SHELBY - Mrs. Pauline Powell Johnson Hood, 94, of 322 Buffalo St., died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
Born in Gasden, S.C., she was a daughter of the late James and Ada Bynum Powell. She was formerly employed by Bost Bakery and George Blanton Sr. She was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where she was involved in the senior choir, the deaconess board and the missionary department. She was also a member of the Christian Mutual Burial Aid Society and the NAACP.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Broadus Johnson; her second husband, Joe Hood; two sons, Broadus Johnson Jr. and Louis Shelly Johnson; a daughter, Dorothy Johnson; two sisters, Florence Cornish and Sally Tucker; and two brothers, James Powell Jr. and John Powell.
Surviving are a daughter, Ethel Johnson of Whiteville; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.

Talmadge Queen
SHELBY - Mr. Talmadge Queen of 3425 Fallston Road, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Bettie Farris
SHELBY - Mrs. Bettie Morehead Farris, 67, of 905 Meadowbrook Lane, died Thursday, July 6, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Joe Reeves officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Willie Walton
MOORESBORO - Mr. Willie James Walton, 51, of 125 Shady Lane, died Wednesday, July 5, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Mooresboro, he was a member of Youngs Chapel AME Zion Church, where he served as chairman of the trustee board, a member of the steward board and program committee and chairman of the Minister Booster Club. He was employed by Jim Powell Trucking Co. in Vale.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Walton.
Surviving are his mother, Martha Walton of the home; two nieces, Taneka Walton of Lincolnton and Paulisha Gray of Charlotte; a nephew, Paul Walton of Lincolnton; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Walton of Lincolnton.
The funeral will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Youngs Chapel AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Carolyn Bratton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Elijah Waters IV

The funeral is today at 11 a.m. at Mount Moriah United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Wayne Buff, Mike Harrill, and Jack Waters officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of Mary Ella Dover Morehead of Shelby and the late Lawrence Evans Morehead. She was a homemaker and a member of Central United Methodist Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, James "Bubber" Farris; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia Farris-Kelly and her husband, Jim, of Greenville, S.C. and Jeanne Farris Karout and her husband, Wissam, of Charlotte; a sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Emmett Matthews of Shelby; and three grandchildren, Josie Karout, Alia Karout and Alex Karout.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Joe Reeves officiating.
Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at the funeral home.
