Frances Alderman
SHELBY - Mrs. Buryl Frances Norman Alderman, 81, of 1176 Wyke Rd. died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Carroll County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Ollie Wesley and Berta Swain Norman. She was retired from Caldwell County Schools.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, James Alderman; two brothers, Joe Norman and Bayne Norman; and a sister, Imogene Norman Burnette.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Clarence W. Alderman; a daughter and son-in-law, Nell Alderman and Ron Canipe of Shelby; a granddaughter and grandson-in-law, Jessica Canipe and Sid Bridges of Charlotte; and a grandson, Jonathan Norman Canipe of Cullowhee.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Monday at Zion Hill Pentecostal Church in Wilkesboro.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 7:30 at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150 or to Shelby Manor Activity Fund, 1176 Wyke Road, Shelby, NC 28150.

Ilene Fraser
BOERNE, Texas - Mrs. Ilene Scruggs Bailey Fraser, 88, of 625 N. Main St., formerly of Shelby, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at Town & Country Manor.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Cliff and Essie Jane Harris Scruggs. She was a homemaker and a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, John Forrest Bailey, and her second husband, Emory Felton Fraser.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Donald F. and Elaine B. Bailey of Boerne; a stepson, Joe Fraser of Shelby; a stepdaughter, Jane Walton of Cary; two grandchildren, G. David Bailey of Minneapolis and Mathew F. Bailey of New Braunfels, Texas; three stepgrandchildren, Troy Walton of Cary and Joel Fraser and Kara Fraser of Shelby; one step great-grandchild, Beth Fraser of Shelby.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Elizabeth Baptist Church with the Revs. Terry Jordan and Jeff Brendle officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in Cliffside Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 4 to 6 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Elizabeth Baptist Church, North Post Road, Shelby, NC 28150.

Donald Jenkins
ELLENBORO - Mr. Donald Joseph Jenkins, 42, of 241 New House Road, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
A native of Charlotte, he was a welder, a Navy veteran and a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
He is survived by his parents, Bobby and Sue Walker Jenkins of the home; a brother and sister-in-law, Ricky and Paulette Jenkins of Ellenboro; a sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and Steve Matheny of Ellenboro; a nephew and his wife, Eric and Erin Jenkins; and a niece, Emily Jenkins.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church with Dr. Wayne Blackwood officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:30 at the church.
McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Ricki Barrett
LEXINGTON - Mrs. Rentha Diane (Ricki) Barrett, 56, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at Linwood United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Davidson Funeral Home, Lexington.

Katharine Smith
ROCK HILL - Mrs. Katharine Shellem Smith, 86, of 1330 India Hook Road, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at Westminster Health Care Center.
A native of Denver, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Dr. O. W. and Maggie Cline Shellem. She was a graduate of Queens College in Charlotte and taught school at West Lincoln High School for 28 years.
She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill and a former member of First Presbyterian Church in Lincolnton.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Joanne and Tom Gaskins of Rock Hill and Kathy and John Gardner of Shelby; two granddaughters, Amie Summer of Rock Hill and Kari Harper and her husband, Benjamin, of Rock Hill; and two grandsons, Cameron Webb Gardner of Boston and William Shellem Gardner of Chapel Hill.
A memorial service will be held today at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Westminster Presbyterian Church with Dr. Shelton Sanford officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the Westminster Towers community room.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Lincolnton, 114 W. Main St., Lincolnton, NC 28092 or to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1330 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Betty Jean Hawkins
FALLSTON - Mrs. Betty Jean Whaley Hawkins, 54, of 107 Oak St., died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was born July 23, 1946, the daughter of Annie Eller Fowler Whaley and the late Virgil Whaley and the stepdaughter of the late Wesley Fowler. She was a member of Blessed Way Baptist Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her fiancé, John A. Gilbert of Fallston; a daughter and her fiancé, April Hawkins and David Pruitt of Belwood; a daughter and her friend, Betty Anne Putnam and Ronald Smith of Shelby; six brothers, Steven Whaley of Pigeon Forge, Tenn., Johnny Whaley and Wesley Fowler of Lawndale, David Whaley, Michael Fowler and Stacey Fowler of Shelby; four sisters, Ina Maloney of Hickory and Carolyn Hamrick, Susie Stevens and Brenda Oaks of Shelby; four special friends, Richard Cossu of Shelby, Herbert Patterson and Hope Gilbert of Fallston and Robert Bradshaw of Casar; and two grandchildren, Reva Putnam and Wesley Putnam of Shelby.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Eugene Bumgardner and Jim Richardson officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Annie Fowler, 1417 Red Road, Shelby.

Vernon Mattingly
LINCOLNTON - Mr. Vernon Eugene Mattingly, 88, of Cardinal Health Care, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at Cardinal Care.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney, S.C., with the Rev. Tony Fulbright officiating.

James Johnson
RUGHERFORDTON - Mr. James Edward Johnson, 66, of 406 Whiteside Road, died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at home.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Crowe's Funeral Chapel with Dr. Don Christian officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Forest City.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home.

Johnnie Wilson
SHELBY - Mr. Johnnie "Big Boy" Wilson, 77, of 205 Ramblewood Drive, Apt. 49, died Thursday, Nov. 9, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Walker and Hattie Harbison Wilson.
He retired from Burlington Industries and was formerly employed by Mauney Cotton Mill, both in Kings Mountain. He was a member of Hopewell Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Baby Boy Wilson and Billy Wilson; a daughter, Sarah Lou Toms; seven brothers, Sam Wilson, Arthur Wilson, Maxie Wilson, Brownie Wilson, Dave Wilson, Angelo Wilson and Fred Wilson; two sisters, Annie Mae Camp and Gertrude Roseboro.
He is survived by his wife, Ruthie Mintz Wilson; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Johnny Jr. and Mary Ann Wilson of Shelby and James Edward Wilson of the home; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Shirley Webber of Shelby, Gloria L. and Robert Crank Jr. and Sharon Wilson of Kings Mountain, Dorothy and Kenneth Jimson of Shelby; 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Gethsemane Holiness Church with the Rev. James Mintz officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at the church.
Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Johnny Gillespie
LINCOLNTON - Mr. Johnny Brock (Chick) Gillespie, 48, of 221 Charlesvoix Ave., died Monday, Nov. 6, 2000, at Lincoln Medical Center.
The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Providence Missionary Baptist Church with the Revs. Michael Hill, Clement Morris Jr., Franklin Lowery and Lacy Ross officiating. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

Lucille Kennedy
SHELBY - Mrs. Lucille Elizabeth Hamilton Kennedy, 79, of 604 Lineberger St., died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Fallston, she was the daughter of the late Mark and Laura Howard Hamilton.
She was a graduate of Douglas High School, a member of Durham United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Charmaine Elizabeth Kennedy.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, William Thomas Kennedy; five children, Johnsie Ward of Bronx, N.Y., William Levon Kennedy of Greensboro, Ronda Gail Kennedy of Grover, Faye Elizabeth Kennedy of Raleigh, and Karen Deborah Kennedy Grigsby of Upper Marlboro, Md.; a daughter-in-law, Reba Kennedy, and a son-in-law, Paul Lamont Grigsby; two brothers, Thomas C. Hamilton of Shelby, and Arthur Hamilton of Charlotte; four sisters, Evelyn Holland of Brooklyn, N.Y., Verna Osbourne of Chase City, Md., Macy Lavan of Hickory and Kathline Foster of Charlotte; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be noon Monday at Durham United Methodist Church with the Rev. R.L. Hunter officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends Monday for 30 minutes before the service at the church.
Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Felicia Hutchinson
MILL SPRING - Mrs. Felicia Lloyd Hutchinson, 61, of 109 Bob White Drive, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at Memorial Mission in Asheville.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Crowe's Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Steve McCormick officiating. A graveside service will be held Monday at 4 p.m. at Gum Spring Baptist Church cemetery in Lilesville.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Crowe's Mortuary.

Evelyn Travis
LINCOLNTON - Mrs. Evelyn Grigg Travis, 68, of 2718 Highland Drive, died Saturday, Nov. 11, 2000, at her home.
The funeral will be held Monday at 7 p.m. in the Warlick Home Funeral Chapel in Lincolnton, with Dr. Dan Dion officiating. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7 at the funeral home.

James Wright Sr.
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. James Calvin Wright Sr., 79, of Century Health Care, Cherryville, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at Century Care.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Dekossie and Lillie Jane Hoyle Wright. He retired from Anvil Knit in Kings Mountain and was a member of David Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, James Calvin Wright Jr., a brother, the Rev. Ray Wright, and a sister, Hazel Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline Spurling Wright of Cherryville; three brothers, Clayton Wright of Gaffney, S.C., Curtiss Wright of Gainesville, Fla., and L.O. Wright of Jesup, Ga.; four sisters, Bonnie Ford, Marge Early, Dot Gann and Annette Cooper, all of Kings Mountain; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at David Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jody Griffin and Mike Chambers officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall one hour before the service.
Memorials may be made to David Baptist Church, 2300 David Baptist Church Road, Kings Mountain, NC 28086.

Betty Hawkins
FALLSTON - Mrs. Betty Jean Whaley Hawkins, 54, of 107 Oak St., died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Michael Wilson
SHELBY - Mr. Michael Eugene Wilson, 53, of 240 West Grover St., died Friday, Nov. 10, 2000, at his home.
Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of Lorraine Wilson of New York, N.Y., and the late Donald Hicks. He was a Marine veteran, and had worked for Bost Bakery and PPG Industries. He was a member of Roberts Tabernacle CME Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons, Michael Christopher and Robert Christopher, both of Shelby; one daughter, Denise Christopher, and a stepdaughter, Cima Gilliam, both of Shelby; one sister, Priscilla Wilson Cockerham of Shelby; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Enloe Mortuary, with the Rev. Carolyn Briggs officiating.
There is no formal visitation. The family will be at 1337 Concord St., Shelby.

Kathy Jamison
HARRIS - Mrs. Kathy Sue Shephard Jamison, 42, of 1836 Harris-Henrietta Road, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000, at her home.
A memorial service will be held at a date to be announced by Melton-Riddle Funeral Home of Sylva. Crowe's Mortuary is in charge of local arrangements.
