Helen Poole
SHELBY - Mrs. Helen Aileen Willis Poole, 75, of 1334 Lithia Springs Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Lincoln County, she was the daughter of the late Pate and Dollie Poole Willis. She was retired from Doran Mill Co. and a member of Shelby New Bethel Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard W. Poole; and a daughter, Joyce Poole Krumnow.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Walter and Phyllis Poole of Shelby and Steve and Melinda Poole of Cherryville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and Bobby Barr of Shelby and Vickie and Dennis Bingham of Fallston; two brothers, Horace Willis of Boiling Springs and Bill Willis of Fallston; and a sister, Betty Hawes of Fallston; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Chapel with the Rev. Bob Andress officiating.
Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 1334 Lithia Springs Road.
Memorials may be made to the Shelby Senior Center, 408 East Marion St., Shelby, NC 28150.

W. Joe Pendleton
SHELBY - Mr. W. Joe Pendleton, 66, of 1205 Brookwood Drive, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Ed and Beulah Webber Pendleton. He was a graduate of West Carolina University and a veteran of the Army. He was a retired owner of Pendleton Tire Co. and a member of Lily Memorial Baptist Church.
He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Tiffany P. Spencer of Hickory and Julie P. and Sam Goforth of Shelby; a sister and brother-in-law, Faithel M. and Flay Carpenter of Shelby; two grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Goforth and Samuel Clayton Goforth of Shelby; and three nieces.
A graveside service will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Julie and Sam Goforth, 511 Peach St., Shelby.
Memorials may be made by Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

Wilburn Davis
SHELBY - Mr. Wilburn Davis, 63, of 1677 Midway Ave., died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Cleveland Funeral Services.

Edwin Smith
SHELBY - Mr. Edwin Yates, Smith, 92, of 601 Whisnant St., died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late William Thomas and Lucinda Wallace Smith. He was a self-employed musician and entertainer in Yorktown Heights in New York.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bemus Smith; and three sisters, Edith S. Hamrick, Luna S. Beattie and Bessie S. Devine.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline Dixon Propst Panther Smith of the home; a stepdaughter and her husband, Joan P. and Charles L. Peeler of Shelby; a brother and sister-in-law, Colon and Edith Smith of Shelby; a stepgranddaughter and her husband, Paula P. and Eddie McWhirter of Columbia, S.C.; a stepgrandson and his wife, Chuck and Angela Peeler of Greensboro; two stepgreat-grandsons, Will McWhirter and Dillon Peeler; two stepgreat-granddaughters, Molly McWhirter and Kelsey Peeler; and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Tony Tench officiating.
Burial will be at Kadesh United Methodist Church Cemetery in Belwood.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Charles and Joan Peeler, 1315 Wesson Road, Shelby.

Wilburn Davis
SHELBY - Mr. Wilburn Davis, 63, of 1677 Midway Ave., died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Millard Lee Davis and Josephine Kelly. He was retired from Esther Mill where he worked for 28 years. He was a member of Community Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Beulah Short Davis of the home; a daughter and her fiance, Sherry Robbins and Tony Wyatt II of Gastonia; four sons and three daughters-in-law, James Wilburn and Beth Davis, Johnny Wayne and Shirley Davis and Billy Gene Davis, all of Shelby and Joseph Ray and Angela Davis of Cherryville; six brothers and four sisters-in-law, Willard and Thelma Davis and Clyde Davis, all of Shelby, Billy Joe and Betty Davis of Rutherfordton, Gene and Patty Davis of Hickory, Hazel and Jackie Davis of Cherryville and Bobby Davis of Charlotte; eight grandchildren, Michael Anderson, Jason Davis, Dustin Davis, Kacie Davis, Jonathan Davis, Brandon Davis, Brooke Davis and Tyler Davis; six stepgrandchildren, Amanda Philbeck, Christinia Moore, Betty Joe Philbeck, Daryl Butler, Jade Butler and Michelle Queen; and a great-grandchild, Alexis Rose Moore.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel with the Revs. John Bridges and Allen Davis officiating.
Burial will be at Sunset Cemetery.

Della Wright
SHELBY - Mrs. Della A. Wright, of 828 S. Post Road, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at Hospice of Cleveland County.
A native of Lexington, she was the daughter of the late Charles Franklin and Vallie Lee Crotts Everhart. She was a registered nurse who retired in 1978 with 37 years of service. She was a member of Elizabeth Baptist Church, the Frances Sunday School Class, Keenagers and a former choir member.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
She is survived by her husband, Ralph C. Wright Sr. of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Pam Wright of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Gloria and Steve Fraser of Shelby; five grandchildren, Charles Lee, Anna Wright, Ben Wright, Brad Fraser and Jennifer Fraser, all of Shelby; two sisters, Ollie Smith and Naomi Hartzog, both of Lexington; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Ford and Joy Everhart and James Everhart, all of Lexington.
The funeral will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at Elizabeth Baptist Church with the Revs. Terry Jordan, Jeff Brendle and Charles B. Summey officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will be at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Cleveland Funeral Services and at other times at the home, 828 S. Post Road.

Edith Halyburton
SHELBY - Mrs. Edith Pratt Halyburton, of 1503 Lackey St., died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at Hospice at Wendover.
A native of Forsyth County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Martha Hauser Pratt. She was a retired teacher with Shelby City and Cleveland County Schools. She was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church and Franklin Avenue Bridge Club. She was a graduate of Appalachian University where she played basketball and was maid of honor in the May Day Festival her senior year. She taught school and coached basketball at Wallburg High School in Davidson County. She married W.E. Halyburton in June 1942 while he was in the navy in Norfolk, Va. They went to San Diego, Ca. and then Bremerton, Wash., where she worked in the Navy Paymasters Office. After the war they returned home and started their family. She later taught school at Casar, Shelby Junior High and Crest Middle school where she retired. She gardened and played tennis and golf.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her hsuband, William E. Halyburton of the home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Brenda and Frank Payne of Boone and Teresa Halyburton of Shelby; two sisters, Mary Pratt Valentine and Rebecca Pratt Beckett, both of Winston-Salem; three sisters-in-law, Katherine and Jack Demas of Shelby, Selma Pratt of Wilkesboro and Dora Pratt of Morristown, Tenn.; and a grandson, Nathan H. Wright of Boone.
The funeral will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at Shelby Presbyterian Church with Dr. Luke Harkey officiating.
Entombment will be at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church parlor and at other times at the home, 1503 Lackey St.

Vannie Pennington
GAFFNEY, S.C. - Mrs. Vannie Rae Pennington, 94, of 308 Blalock Lane, died Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2000, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A prayer service will be tonight at 7:30 at White Columns Funeral Service, Gaffney, with the Rev. William Blanton officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at the funeral home and at other times at the home, 305 E. 8th St., Gaffney.

Thomas Hyder
BOSTIC - Mr. Thomas Calvin Hyder, 81, of Highway 226, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000.
A native of Hendersonville, he was the son of the late John B. and Rosie McAbee Hyder. He was a retired first class sergeant in the U.S. Army. He was also a retired police chief for Forrest Acres, S.C., and was retired from the S.C. Board of Labor as a mason. He served in World War II and the Korean War receiving two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, a Good Conduct Medal and a European Theater Ribbon.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Garvin Hyder.
He is survived by a daughter, Thomasine Vaughn of Hendersonville; a son, John Hyder of Shelby; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Columbia, S.C.
Memorials may be made to Life Enrichment Center, 1270 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC 28150.

SPINDALE - Mrs. Patricia Ann England, 42, of Spindale, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Little White Country Church in Gilkey.
Burial will be at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home.

Lois Young
HICKORY - Mrs. Lois Willis Young, 92, of Hickory, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at Carolina Care Center in Cherryville.
A native of Catawba County, she was the daughter of the late A.B. and Zuda Ellen Mull Willis. She was a retired teacher with the Hickory City School System. She served on the Hickory School Board, was active in BPW and the Democratic Party of Catawba County. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Hickory, where she organized and managed their first church library.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C. Spurgeon Young.
She is survived by a son, Charles S. Young Jr. of Denver; a daughter, Ellen Morrison of Randolph, N.J.; six grandsons, Scott Young of Newton, Jay Young of Chattanooga, Tenn., Clark Young of Greensboro, Craig Young of Denver, Garth Morrison of Newton, Mass. and Grant Morrison of Boston; and nine great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Hickory with Dr. William W. Leathers III officiating.
Burial will be at Catawba Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Bass-Smith Funeral Home.

RUTHERFORDTON - Mr. Roy Washington Ashburn, 82, of 112 Rainbow Rapids Road, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Crowe's Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Ted Riedel and Roy T. Byers officiating.
Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park.

Ruth Poston
MOBILE, Ala. - Mrs. Ruth Bost Poston, 87, of Murray House, 1257 Governor St., formerly of Shelby, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2000.
A native of Shelby, she was the daughter of the late L.C. and Eula Bennett Bost. She was a retired buyer at Belk Department Store in Roanoke, Ala.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Atkin Poston, who died June 18, 1981.
She is survived by a son, Michael Poston of Lula, Ga.; a daughter, Josephine Poston Haidt of Mobile; three brothers, Bennett W. Bost, Ned W. Bost and Floyd P. Bost, all of Shelby; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be Monday at 10:30 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Tony Tench officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery and at other times at the home of Floyd P. Bost, 124 Columns Circle, Shelby.

BLACKSBURG, S.C. - Mr. Lee Roy Pennington, 81, of 212 Sunset Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2000, at his home.
A graveside service with Masonic rites will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. Norman Philbeck officiating.
