Dave Byrd
LAWNDALE - Mr. David "Dave" Byrd, 76, of Lawndale, died Sunday, Nov. 19, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born July 28, 1924, in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Homer and Clara Muckle Byrd. He was a veteran of the Army and retired from the maintenance department of the city of Kings Mountain. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Lawndale.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers; two sisters; and two daughters, Colene Guest and Mildred Byrd.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marie Coates Byrd of Lawndale; five daughters, Betty Bunch of Philadelphia, Christine Bradshaw of Gastonia, Linda Byrd, Debra Williams and Danette Poole, all of Lawndale; three sons, David Byrd Jr. of Kings Mountain, Bruce Edward Byrd of Lawndale and Melvin Byrd of Shelby; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Ilene Coates Pounds of Philadelphia and Odessa Byrd of Lawndale; two brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.
A eulogy service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Pastor B.D. Houze officiating. Burial will be at Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.
Funeral arrangements are by Withrow's Funeral Services of Kings Mountain.

Bill Worthy
SHELBY - Mr. William H. "Bill" Worthy, 77, of 355 Brookside, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
He was the son of the late Lonnie and Eliza Gibson Worthy. He was retired from Worthy Plumbing and Heating where he was chairman of the board. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945 in World War II. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wilburn Worthy.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Patrick Worthy; two sons, Chris Worthy of Boiling Springs and Kevin D. Worthy of Shelby; a daughter, Janis W. Greene of Shelby; two sisters, Juanita W. Peeler and Margie W. Bright, both of Gaffney, S.C.; seven granddaughters; one grandson; two great-grandsons; one great-granddaughter.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Wallace officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will be at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends after the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to Cleveland-Rutherford Kidney Association, 1017 N. Washington St., Shelby, NC 28150.

Thelma Patton
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Mrs. Thelma A. Patton, 86, of 930 Mike Circle, formerly of Kings Mountain, died Monday, Nov. 20, 2000, at Magnolia Manor in Spartanburg.
A graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Hollywood Cemetery in Gastonia with Dr. John Sloan officiating.
The family will receive friends Friday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Harris Funeral Home, Kings Mountain.

Vangie Westmoreland
GROVER - Mrs. Vangie Norman Westmoreland, 91, of 949 Dixon School Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Mack and Ann Cook Norman. She was a homemaker and farm wife and a member of First Baptist Church, Grover.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, J. Bert Westmoreland; four sisters, Lillie Turner of Lawndale, Vacie Wallace of Dallas and Hattie Allen and Gazzie Allen, both of Grover; and four brothers, Jimmie Norman, Walter Norman and Mackie Norman, all of Kings Creek, S.C., and Johnnie Norman of Gastonia.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dean and Carolyn Westmoreland of Grover; and a brother-in-law, W.E. "Bill" Westmoreland of West Mifflin, Pa.
The funeral will be today at 6 p.m. in Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel of Harris Funeral Home with Dr. Tony Fulbright officiating.
The family will receive friends after the services from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

John Hicks
BOILING SPRINGS - Mr. John Lee Hicks, 82, of Crawley Memorial Hospital, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late William Seth and Eva Hamrick Hicks. He was retired from Hoechst Celanese after working in the pump and pack department. He was a member, former treasurer and choir member at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. He served in the Army during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janelle Hamrick Hicks; four brothers, Wofford Hicks, Edley Hicks, Nicus Hicks and Lewis Hicks; and two sisters, Eunice Clark and Marjorie Hicks.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Larry Dale and Margaret Hicks of Mooresboro; two brothers, Linzie R. Hicks of Shelby and Charles A. Hicks of Mooreboro; one sister, Ruth Putnam of Mooreboro; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Greene of Lawndale and Catherine Hicks of Cincinnati; two great-grandchildren, Charles A. Greene and Susan Elizabeth Greene of Lawndale.
The funeral will be today at 3:30 at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church with the Rev. Greg Qualls officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family received friends Wednesday at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home, Shelby.

Nellie Crowder
SHELBY - Mrs. Nellie Hastings Crowder, 99, of 205 W. Main St., Lattimore, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Camden County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel West and Dillie Simpson Hastings. She was a homemaker and a member of Double Springs Baptist Church, where she was involved in the Dorcas Sunday School Class, in the Primary Department for 22 years and was the first church organist. She was the first Worthy Matron of Mooresboro Eastern Star Chapter No. 296. She was a secretary and bookkeeper for Quinn Furniture Co. of Elizabeth City, Crowder Cotton Gin Co. of Lattimore and Lattimore School.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest S. Crowder; two sons, Forrest S. Crowder Jr. and William Alan Crowder and his wife JoAnn Crowder.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Warren and Nellie Crowder of Lattimore; a daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Marietta Crowder and Dr. Kerfoot Walker of Tyler, Texas; a brother, Garland S. Hastings of Lattimore; a daughter-in-law, Yvonne Crowder Elliott of Irving, Texas; five granddaughters and their husbands, Amy Walker and James Proctor, Roslyn Crowder and Bob Teutsch, Kimberly Crowder and Mike Herndon, Sandra Crowder and Bob Carignan and Melissa Crowder and Keith Wade; three grandsons and their wives, Kerfoot III and Vicki Walker, Christopher and Tracy Walker and Samuel Crowder Jr.; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Double Springs Baptist Church with the Revs. Eddie Brackett and C.A. Kirby officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

William Black
SHELBY - Mr. William K. Black, 87, of 1009 Frederick St., died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2000, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Samuel and Georgia Wray Black. He was formerly employed by Dover Mills.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lela Berry Black and two sisters and three brothers.
He is survived by one daughter, Leola Fowler of Providence, R.I.; one sister, Hattie Key of Providence; one sister-in-law, Katherine Porter of Shelby; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Eskridge Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. C.D. Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church and at the home of Katherine Porter, 1219 Masonic Drive, Shelby.

Florence Lewis
FALLSTON - Mrs. Florence Ever Gantt Lewis, 96, of 132 Beam St., died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Stamey Funeral Home.

Pauline Shuford
LAWNDALE - Mrs. Pauline Floyd Shuford, 86, of 1619 W. Stagecoach Trial, died Thursday, Nov. 23, 2000, at Century Care of Shelby.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Stamey Funeral Home.

Jane Oakes
ELLENBORO - Mrs. Jane B. Oakes, 82, died Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2000, at Century Care Nursing Home in Shelby.
The funeral will be today at 1 p.m. at Duncan's Creek Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Rebecca Whitley
SHELBY - Mrs. Rebecca C. "Becky" Whitley, 61, of 208 Cleveland Ave. died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 9, 1939, she was the daughter of Mabel Louise Lovelace Dawkins and the late Lane Columbus Coble. She was a retired teacher with Shelby City Schools, serving 27 years. She was a member of John Knox Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Roger W. Whitley; three daughters and sons-in-law, Tracy W. and John Rayne and Tammy W. and Kent Keplinger, all of Gastonia, and Tonya W. and Drew Beam of Shelby; three grandchildren, Logan Keplinger, Cole Keplinger and Grayson Rayne; a brother, Lane Coble Jr. of Stanley; and a niece, Gina Clark of Pineville.
The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at Shelby Presbyterian Church with the Rev. William S. Troutman officiating.
The family will receive friends today at 4 p.m. at John Knox Presbyterian Church and other times at the home of Drew and Tonya Beam, 603 Forest Hill Drive.

Tom King
SHELBY - Mr. Vol Thomas "Tom" King, 75, of Holden Beach and Shelby and formerly of Charlotte, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Hoke Barton and Fannie Palmer King. He served in the Navy during World War II. A graduate of King's Business College, he retired from Exxon Corp. after 31 years of service and from Prudential Carolinas Realty after 15 years of service. He was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon and an elder. He was also president of the Optimist Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Hoke Barton King Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sarah Bowen King; three daughters and two sons-in law, Wanda King, Susan Poole and Buddy Jordan and Linda and Pat Thornton; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Julie King; eight grandchildren, Benjamin and Caroline Jordan of Lilburn Ga., Natalie, Mary, Zachary and Sarah Thornton, all of Charlotte, and Kevin and David King of Matthews; a sister, Helen King of Charlotte.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Drs. Andrew M. Smith and Howard Chadwick and the Rev. Drew Smith officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2:30 p.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park in Boiling Springs.
The family will receive friends from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. in the narthex of the church.

Pauline Padgett
ELLENBORO - Mrs. Pauline Sparks Padgett, 86, of 477 Dobbinsville Road died Friday, Dec. 1, 2000, at home.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen, with the Revs. Jeff Watts and Eugene Passmore officiating. Burial will follow in High Shoal Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Sandra Cobb
VERMILLION, OHIO - Mrs. Sandra Lynn Cobb, 63, of Vermillion, died Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000, at Specialty Hospital in Loraine.
Services will be 7 p.m. Monday at Lakeview Baptist Church in Vermillion with the Rev. Guy Morton officiating.
Another service will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Adaville Baptist Church in Spindale with the Rev. James Daves officiating.
Burial will be Thursday in the Adaville Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Monday at Riddle Funeral Home in Vermillion and one hour prior to the service at Lakeview Baptist Church and from 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Crowe's Mortuary, Rutherfordton, and one hour prior to the service at Adaville Baptist Church.

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Buren Byrd, 64, of 1229 Kohler Ave., died Thursday Nov. 30, 2000, at home.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Lawndale with Rev. Billy Houze officiating. Burial will follow in Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the home of James Byrd, 2832 Philadelphia Road in Lawndale.

Withrow Brown
GASTONIA - Mr. Withrow Brown, 71, of 2324 Knight Drive, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Bynum Chapel AME Zion Church with Rev. Reginal McClain and Elder Stellie Jackson officiating.
The family will receive friends today at 1 p.m. at J.W. Gill and Son Funeral Home, Kings Mountain.

Euzelia Holder
GAFFNEY, S.C. - Mrs. Euzelia Hamrick Holder, 75, of 109 Trenton Road, died Saturday Dec. 2, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late John C, and Lilly McSwain Hamrick. She was a supervisor for Hamrick's Inc. and a member of Park Hill Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, the Rev. James E. Holder; two sons, James D. Holder of Gaffney and Joel T. Holder of Greenville, S.C.; one grandson, David Isaac Holder of Gaffney; four sisters, Bertha Guffy of Forest City, Gertie Guffy and Lela Blanton, both of Boiling Springs and Ruth Wesson of Shelby; a brother, Buford Hamrick of Shelby; a sister-in-law, Thelma Hamrick of Shelby; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Park Hill Baptist Church with Revs. Stuart Kersey and Dewitt Clyde officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service.
Burial will be private.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Phillips, Ross Beatton, Kevin Corbett, Bill Hannon, Glenn Collins, Richard Rhyne, Wayne Davis and Paul Dobbins.
The family will receive friends after the service at the church and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to Park Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, 1100 Leadmine Road, Gaffney, SC 29340; or to Pediatric Cancer Society of South Carolina.
