Mitchell Grier
ELLENBORO - Mr. Mitchell Edward Grier, 68, of 2480 New House Road, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at his residence.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late George W. And Mozell Scims Grier. He was a veteran of the Army, serving in Korea. He was retired from Stonecutter Mills.
He is survived by his wife Ruth Grier of the home; two stepsons, Jerry Lovelace and Jackie Lovelace, both of Ellenboro; one stepdaughter, Janet Williams of Ellenboro; two brothers, Frank D. Grier of Stafford, Va., and Boyd Grier of Kernersville; and three sisters, Roberta Elliott of Shelby, Elizabeth Cook Mull of Polkville and Kathy Toney of Bostic.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffside, with the Rev. LaMar Hewitt officiating.
Burial will be in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Francis Epps
HAMPTON, S.C. - Mr. Francis Marion Epps, 78, of 1208 Joey St., died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at the Dorn Veterans Administration Hospital in Columbia, S.C.
Born Dec. 13, 1921, in the New Zion Community of Clarendon County, S.C., he was a son of the late John James and Italine Tomlinson Epps. He was owner and operator of Epps Motor Co. in Hampton until his retirement. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a 1942 graduate of Clemson University, had been active with the Estill Lions Club and was an elder and deacon of Hampton Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Harrison Epps of Hampton; a daughter and son-in-law, Frankie and U.L. "Rusty" Patterson III of Shelby; a brother, Wilbur C. Epps of New Zion, S.C.; two sisters, Elizabeth Barbery and Vivian Towns of Summerville, S.C.; and two granddaughters, Marion Patterson and Margaret Patterson.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Peeples-Rhoden Funeral Home, with Dr. Albert Eads Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Hampton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home and on Tuesday before the service.
Memorials may be made to Hampton Presbyterian Church, Mulberry Street, Hampton, SC 29924.

Eulah Kennedy
LINCOLNTON - Mrs. Eulah Ruth Nixon Kennedy, 76, of Brian Center, 1410 East Gaston St., died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2000, at Lincoln Medical Center.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Tucker's Grove United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Albert O. Perkins Sr. officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service.

Kenneth Cline
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Kenneth D. Cline, 84, of 406 Pine Grove Ave., died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville, with the Rev. Kelley Jones officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 Tuesday at Stamey-Cherryville Funeral Home.

Josie Mae Stevens
GAFFNEY, S.C. - Mrs. Josie Mae Hall Stevens, 69, of 300 Lockhart Lane, died Friday, Dec. 8, 2000, at Spartanburg (S.C.) Regional Medical Center.
A graveside funeral is today at 1 p.m. at Frederick Memorial Gardens, with the Revs. Willie Lanier and Wayne Arrowood officiating.
White Columns Funeral Service of Gaffney is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Jane Weaver
RUTHERFORDTON - Mrs. Mary Jane Lanier Weaver, 81, of Willow Ridge Nursing Home, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at her home.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Chess and Nancy Morgan Lanier. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon L. "Pee Wee" Weaver; a son, John "Buddy" Weaver; five sisters, Ida Gantt, Faye Randall, Carrie Johnson, Annie Bell Randall and Pearl Bailey; and three brothers, Lozier Lanier, Fields Lanier and A.V. Lanier.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and Ken Johnson of Shelby; three granddaughters, Le Ann Johnson, Lisa Johnson and Phyllis Clay and her husband, Jerry, all of Shelby; a grandson, Scott Weaver of Boiling Springs; a great-granddaughter, Donnis Weaver of Boiling Springs; and two great-grandsons, John Michael Weaver of Boiling Springs and Brandon Tyler Clay of Raleigh.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park, with the Rev. Jim Frost officiating.
The family will be at the home of Virginia and Ken Johnson, 416 Allen St., Shelby.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043-0336.
Clay-Barnette Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Denise Pilcher
LINCOLNTON - Ms. Denise Lynne Pilcher, 26, of 1009 Georgetown Road, died Saturday, Dec. 9, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Warlick Funeral Home, with the Rev. Keith Love officiating. Burial will be in Hollybrook Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 at Warlick Funeral Home.

Dennis Mayhew
SHELBY - Mrs. Dennis Byers Mayhew, 92, of Pleasant Drive, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born July 4, 1908, in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Darro Pender and Myrtle Borders Byers. She co-owned Mayhew's Restaurant and, after the restaurant was sold, worked in retail sales for Bost Bakery until her retirement. She was a lifelong member of Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Talmage Wilson Mayhew, who died Sept. 14, 1974; and a sister, Lena Byers Putnam.
She is survived by a niece and her husband, Gloria Putnam and George Cunningham Newman of Shelby; a nephew, Dare Byers Putnam of Shelby; and a great-nephew, Jason Cunningham Newman of Charleston, S.C.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Billy Towery and Grady Barringer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service. At other times, they will be at the home of Gloria and George Newman, 905 Pleasant Drive, Shelby.

Virgil Blanton
PATTERSON SPRINGS - Mr. Virgil Green Blanton, 85, of 5402 Spring Lane, Shelby, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late William Fred and Dovie McSwain Blanton. He retired from Esther Mill Co. and was a member of Landmark Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathryn Leigh Blanton; and a brother, Baxter Blanton.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Wayne and Diane Blanton and Robert and Deborah Blanton, all of Shelby; four grandchildren and their spouses, Dwayne and Julie Blanton of Charlotte, Seann and Amy Blanton and Tyler Haeck, all of Lincolnton, and Julie Wilson of Boiling Springs; three great-grandchildren, Grant Blanton, John Wilson and Jesse Wilson; and a special friend, Roy Dyer.
The funeral is today at 3 p.m. at Landmark Baptist Church, with the Revs. Allen Davis and Jeff Haynes officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Patterson Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today at Landmark Baptist Church one hour before the service.
Memorials may be made to Landmark Baptist Church, 1724 East Dixon Blvd., Shelby, NC 28152.

Ideelan Bell
SHELBY - Ideelan Juanye Bell, infant son of Allisha Shuntae "Lee Lee" Borders and Calvin Julius Bell, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by grandparents, Vickie Borders of Shelby, Thomas and Marie Smith of Grover and Henry and Kay Gabby of Charlotte; great-grandparents, Fairy Borders, Carson and Flossie Lipscomb, all of Shelby; two aunts, Tia Savage of Shelby and Amanda Bell of Charlotte; four uncles, Antwan Dawkins of Kings Mountain and Kelvin Gabby, Keith Gabby and Cory Gabby, all of Charlotte.
A graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Fairview AME Zion Church Cemetery in Earl with the Rev. Gary Smith officiating.
Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

J.D. Patterson
SHELBY - Mr. J.D. Patterson, 81, of 1207-A Northgate Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
Born in McDowell County, he was the son of the late J.C. and Sarah Parker Patterson. He retired as a machine installer with American Schlafhorst Inc. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of New Bethel Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Charles Patterson.
He is survived by his wife, Syble Sisk Patterson of the home; a son, Ronald D. Patterson of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Bobbi and Don Gibson of Nashville, Tenn., and Tammi and Lynn Dodson of Wilmington; three grandchildren, Dana Patterson of Lexington, Ky., and Ryan Dodson and Wesley Dodson, both of Wilmington; and a special friend Chivous Melton of Ellenboro.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at New Bethel Church of the Nazarene with the Revs. Bob Andress and Reed Jones and Dr. Don McSwain officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.
At other times, the family will be at the home of Shirley Stinchcomb, 700 West Warren St., Shelby.

Ambrose Lutz
BESSEMER CITY - Mr. Ambrose L. Lutz, 85, of 144 Mountain View Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Bethea United Methodist Church with the Revs. Allen Van Meter and Marsha Joyner officiating. Burial will be in West View Gardens in Bessemer City.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain and at other times at the home of a daughter, Betty Herman, in Bessemer City.

Maggie Toney
CLIFFSIDE - Mrs. Maggie Mullinax Toney, 70, of 173 Chesterfield Road, died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at her home.
Born in Cherokee County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Grady and Anzie Mullinax.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Tracy Toney.
She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Walter Robert Toney of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Susan Toney of Mooresboro; a brother, Ray Mullinax of Kings Mountain; three sisters, Wilma Osment of Augusta, Ga., Lois Strain of Spartanburg, S.C., and Nillie Kobillis of Fort Washington, Md.; a granddaughter, Sheila Toney; and a grandson, Dylan Toney.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home in Cliffside with the Rev. John Goforth officiating. Burial will be in Cliffside Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home.

Margie McCleary
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Margie Ray McCleary, 54, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000.
Born in Nash County on March 6, 1946, she was the daughter of William J. and Irene Tillery of Elm City. She attended Frederick Douglass High School in Elm City in Wilson County. She graduated from Corcoran School of Arts in Washington, D.C., where she achieved her arts degree. She worked for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as an FHA appraisal inspector. She continued her education in nursing where she received a certificate to operate a home nursing facility. After she met her husband, they started a small business, Kings Mountain Care Center for adult care, which lasted for more than 20 years. She was the director and administrator at the business. Mrs. McCleary was also an architect and helped build the couple's home and their business.
She was a member of Bible Way Church in Washington, D.C. Later she moved to Kings Mountain and became a member at Mills Chapel in Gastonia.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Norris E. McCleary II of the home; a daughter, Christy G. McCleary of Atlanta; a son, Norris E. McCleary III of Kansas City; four brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Renee Tillery of Philadelphia, Sylvester Tillery of Gastonia, Horace C. and Algie Tillery of Charlotte and Wilbert E. Tillery of Washington D.C.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Ilean Williams of West Virginia and Sandra T. and Stephen Graham of Harrisburg; three brothers-in-law, James E. Lucas of Mechanicville, Md., Bobby McCleary and Thedore R. McCleary, both of Gastonia; a mother-in-law, Willie Mae McCleary of Gastonia; two sisters-in-law, Leonia McCleary of Gastonia and Loraine Talley of Washington D.C.; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Kings Mountain with the Rev. Wesley Satterwhite officiating. Burial will be at Adams Chapel Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Withrow's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Viki B. McKinney
LAWNDALE - Mrs. Viki Bierlair McKinney, 41, of 108 Wallace St., died Wednesday, Dec. 13, 2000, at Hospice of Cleveland County.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston.
