CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Brian Earl Brittain, 38, of 1280 Pearl Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m at Saint Mark's Lutheran Church, with the Revs. Leroy Trexler and Michael Collins officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Carpenter's Funeral Home and at the home of the mother-in-law, Margie Lineberger, 620 Anthony Grove Church Road in Cherryville.

Verdie Earls
BOILING SPRINGS - Mrs. Verdie Putnam Earls, 82, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a homemaker and a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church; The Revels Senior Choir; and Mothers Sunday school class.
She was preceded in death by her husband, C. Elmer Earls; her parents, Durham L. and Mabel Russ Putnam; and a brother, Edward Putnam.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Stanley and Linda Earls of Gaffney, S.C., and Stephen and Shelia Earls of Shelby; a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and Marvin Fortenberry of Shelby; a sister, Helen Smith of Ingram, Texas; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. at Flint Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Dixon officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 2-3 p.m. at the church.
Memorials may be made to Flint Hill Baptist Church, 2207 Flint Hill Church Road, Shelby, NC 28152.

Eulan Franklin
HILDEBRAN - Mr. Eulan Glenn Franklin, 77, of Henry River Road died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
A native of Catawba County, he was retired from Century Furniture and was a member of Longview Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie Hildebran (Tink) Franklin; his parents, Paul Raymond and Elizabeth Ross Franklin; a son, Bobby Franklin; a grandson; and three brothers.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Dean Childers and Monica and Brad Arney, all of Hildebran; a son, Glen Franklin of Hickory; two brothers, Jerry Franklin of Waco and Ervin Franklin of Shelby; two sisters, Mary Jo Everhardt of Lexington and Catherine Lail of Lawndale; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Hickory Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Gary Coble officiating. The body will be placed in the chapel 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Monday night from 7-8:30 at the funeral home.

Cora Yelton
SHELBY - Mrs. Cora Blanche Yelton, 82, of 1056 College Ave. died Saturday Jan. 13, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Furman Monroe and Minnie Chambers Pearson Ledbetter. She was the former owner and operator of Whispering Pines Rest Home and a member of Bethel Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Grace and John Gold and Joy and Don Bell, all of Shelby; three grandsons and two granddaughters-in-law, the Rev. Tim and Chris Gold of Chattanooga, Tenn., Mark and Joan Bell of Shelby and Jason Bell of Shelby; two granddaughters and a grandson-in-law, Tonia and Mark McCurry of Shelby and Alecia Bell of Wilmington; two great-grandsons, Noah Gold of Chattanooga and Jaron Bell of Shelby; three great-granddaughters, Kayla Gold of Chattanooga and Emily McCurry and Samantha McCurry of Shelby; and a sister, Erie L. Bryant of Shelby.
The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Dr. Pat Correll, Dr. Ernest Arnold, and the Rev. Tim Gold officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Sharon United Methodist Church.
The family will receive friends Monday from 2-3 p.m. at the church and other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 600 S. Dekalb St., Shelby, NC 28150.
Cleveland Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Ken Jones
VALE - Mr. William McKinley Jones, 66, of 1976 Willis Road, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 12, 1934 in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Frank and Jettie Caroline Bivens Jones. He was retired from Century Furniture in Hickory after 24 1/2 years of service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stepgrandson.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Riley Jones of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Tammy Jones of Vale; two daughters and a son-in-law, Carol Ann and Jeff Lail and Michelle Poynter, all of Conover; two stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Donald and Renee Bridges of Hickory and Jerry and Sandy Bridges of E. Palatka, Fla.; two stepdaughters and a stepson-in-law, Nancy and Barry Jones of Maysville, Ky., and Julie Spurlin of Salisbury; two brothers, Eugene Jones of Cherryville and Larry Jones of Portland, Tenn.; five sisters, Nadine Harrison and Bertie Davis of Shelby, Ruby Martin, Lois Chapman and Mamie Lou Pruett, all of Casar; six grandchildren; 10 stepgrandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Donald Caldwell officiating.
Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Hickory.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 at the funeral home.

SPINDALE - Mrs. Lee Womick Griffin, 89, of 414 Nebraska St., died Friday Jan. 12, 2001, at Fair Haven Home in Bostic.
The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Spindale United Methodist Church with the Revs. Dan Ramsey and Joe Yelton officiating.
Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Forest City.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6-8 at Crowe's Mortuary, Rutherfordton.

Rosie Humphries
SHELBY - Mrs. Rosie Moore Humphries, 89, of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
Born Aug. 30, 1911, in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Dixon and Annie Bell Johnson Moore. She was a homemaker and a member of Sandy Run Baptist Church in Mooresboro.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy O. Humphries; and three sons, Hayward Humphries, Gene Humphries and Edward Humphries.
She is survived by five sons and four daughters-in-law, Billy Joe and Janice Humphries of Swainsville, Garland and Jean Humphries of Boiling Springs, Charlie and Loretta Humphries of Cherryville, Dennis and Brenda Humphries of Cherryville and Scott Humphries of Shelby; two daughters and one son-in-law, Louise H. and Max Williams and Rose Marie Humphries, all of Shelby; one brother, Colel Moore of Kings Mountain; one sister, Bertha M. Holden of Gastonia; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be today at 2:30 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Ricky S. Baker officiating.
The family will receive friends Saturday at Palmer Mortuary.

Horace Brackett
FOREST CITY - Mr. Horace Phillip "H.P." Brackett, 51, of 185 McGinnis Road, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at the Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the Padgett and King Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Ruppe officiating. Burial with military rites will follow in the Cool Springs Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and the funeral home and other times at the home.

Dessie Mae Parks
SHELBY - Ms. Dessie Mae Parks, 70, of 418 Hobbs Ave., died Saturday Jan. 13, 2001, at Cleveland Pines of Shelby.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Genesis Funeral Home.

Clifford Luckadoo
SHELBY - Mr. Clifford Eugene Luckadoo, 68, of 108 Moose Drive, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Century Care of Shelby.
A memorial service will be held today at 2:30 p.m. at Putnam Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Brian Glisson officiating.
Clay-Barnette Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Floyd Beal Sr.
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Floyd Augustus Beal Sr., 83, of 302 Pine Ave. died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Billy Lowe officiating. Burial will follow in City Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 at Carpenter's Funeral Home.

Alvin Lail
SHELBY - Mr. Alvin C. "Junior" Lail, 78, of 1154 Mitchell St., died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at his home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Lemuel C. and Mullie Justice Lail. He retired from Belding Lily Mill Co. after 46 years of service as a finishing department supervisor. He was a Baptist and a member of Lily Old Timers Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, the late Ava Pearl Bridges Lail.
He is survived by one son, David Lail of Boiling Springs; three daughters and three sons-in-law, Doris and Dan Holland and Joyce and Hal Wellmon, all of Shelby, and Janie and James Dover of Grover; three brothers, Ben Lail, Dewey Lail and Gorman Lail, all of Shelby; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great- grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Rev. David Fambrough officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home.

Zula Howington
BOILING SPRINGS - Mrs. Zula Walker Howington, 89, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Crawley Memorial Hospital.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Javan and Susanne Wiggins Walker. She retired from Nu-Way Cleaners. She was a member of Boiling Springs Baptist Church and belonged to the choir and Serosis Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Herman Alfred Howington and James Franklin Hamrick.
She is survived by one son and one daughter-in-law, James G. and Carol Hamrick of Alexandria, Va., and three grandchildren, Penelope Hamrick, Jane Hamrick and James G. Hamrick Jr.
The funeral will be tonight at 7:30 at Boiling Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Bonnie Doughtie and Dr. Carroll Page officiating. Burial will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall from 6:00 to 7:30 tonight.

R.C. Smith
LAWNDALE - Mr. R.C. Smith, 74, of 128 Big Hill Road, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born June 29, 1926, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Roscoe and Dessie Leonia Hudson Smith. He served in the Army during World War II and was retired from Century Furniture in Hickory.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Chapman Smith, and a brother, Cecil Smith.
He is survived by six daughters and three sons-in-law, Guynell and Jim Chapman and Janet Hoyle of Lawndale, Shirley Hoyle of Morganton, Becky and Warren Holcombe of Morganton, Johana and Dale Lackey of Hiddenite and Mary Lou Woller of Sherrills Ford; a sister, Mary Dee Smith of Hickory; a special nephew, Danny Smith; a special grandson, Shannon Smith; 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston with the Revs. Jackie Price and Keith Fulbright officiating. Burial will be in Mount Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family received friends Monday night at the funeral home.

Ruth Harrison
GAFFNEY, S.C. - Mrs. Ruth Davis Harrison, 95, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2001, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center.
A native of Spartanburg County, she was the daughter of the late Jermon and Janie Loftis Davis. She was a member of Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church and was associated with E.C. Oil and Coal Co. of Gaffney.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, E.C. "Boone" Harrison.
She is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, J.D. and Evelyn Cooper Harrison and Roy and Jean Harrison, all of Gaffney; one daughter and son-in-law, Virgina H. and Ray Wellmon of Gaffney; one brother, Roy D. Davis Sr. of Gaffney; one sister, Margueriete Robinson of Yorktown Heights, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Michelle Harrison Botelho, Julian Harrison and Dr. Bruce Wellmon, all of Gaffney; four great-grandchildren, Ebbie Addis Dover, Jennifer Addis, Rebeka Wellmon and Eva Wellmon, all of Gaffney; one great-great-grandchild, Meagan Beason of Gaffney.
A celebration of life service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church with the Revs. Frank Northcutt, Clarence Hampton and Clyde Thomas officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Entombment will follow at Clingman Memorial Gardens, Blacksburg, S.C.
Pallbearers will be Wilson Truluck, Keith Harrison, Jack Phillips, Terry Addis, Lemuel Grubb and Jimmy Owens.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at White Columns Funeral Service, Gaffney, and at other times at the home of Virginia Harrison Wellmon, 131 Saxon Drive in Gaffney.
Memorials may be made Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church, Lottie Moon or Vehicle funds, 805 Cherokee Ave., Gaffney, SC 29340.

Janie Wray
SHELBY - Mrs. Janie Cline Wray, 79, of 1402 Wesson Road, died Monday, Jan. 15, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Lawndale, she was born Oct. 21, 1921, a daughter of the late D. Hustler and Vivian Odom Cline. She was an accomplished tap and ballet dancer, performing at county fairs, pageants, recitals and nursing homes. For many years she taught her own school of dance. Her love of music was expressed throughout her life as a self-taught cord organist and composer. She was an active charter member of Shelby Woman's Club and longtime former member of Cleveland Country Club. She was a life-long member of First Baptist Church of Shelby singing in the choir for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Stough A. Wray Sr.; a half-sister, Mildred Cline Arey Vaughn; a half-brother, D.H. Cline Jr.; two sisters, Mary Annie Cline Barberree and Lillian Cline Haney; a brother, Marshal O. Cline; and a son-in-law, Daniel Hugh Ledbetter.
She is survived by a daughter, Janie Wray Ledbetter; a son and daughter-in-law, Stough A. Jr. and Sarah McEntire Wray; eight grandchildren, Stough "Chip" A. Wray III and his wife, Belle Rollins, Shelley Wray and husband, Van Roberts, and S. Louise Wray, all of Shelby, Rush A. Wray and his wife, Lisa Whitaker, of Asheville, Anna C. Ledbetter of Charlotte, Daniel Hugh Ledbetter Jr. and his wife, Tatjana Arnds of Fort Levenworth, Kan., Lee Ledbetter and husband, Ken Beal, of Murphy, David Wray Ledbetter and wife, Gina Gray, of Fort Campbell, Ky.; 12 great-grandchildren, Suzanne Maxwell and husband, Tyson Dover, Stephen Maxwell, Madalyn Roberts, Forrest Roberts, Cameron Ledbetter, Victoria Ledbetter, Colt Tenney, Adam Beal, Reid Beal, Courtney Flateau, Harley Ledbetter and Haley Ledbetter.
A memorial service will be Thursday at 3 p.m. in the main sanctuary of First Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Tench officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends two hours before the service at the church and at other times at the home of Stough Jr. and Sarah Wray at 701 Parkwood Road, Shelby.

FOREST CITY - Mr. Amos Mayse, 77, of 3763 Whiteside Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Wilson Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Crowe's Mortuary, Rutherfordton.

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Mrs. Hilda Silver, 79, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001.
