POLKVILLE - Mrs. Susie Pauline Ivie Smart, 86, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Haven of the Hills in Bostic.
A native of Habersham County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Simmion and Levi Hardy Ivie. She was a retired textile worker.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Forrest Curtis Smart; three sons, Charles Smart, Ruffus Smart and Forest S. Smart; and one daughter, Charlotte Joyce Smart.
She is survived by one son, Virgil "Buddy/Cowboy" Smart of Polkville; two daughters, Donnie Gail Smart Cook of Polkville and Frances S. Hutchins of Connelly Springs; one sister, Gustavia Lance of Atlanta; 16 grandchildren; 26 great - grandchildren; and nine great - great - grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Lutz-Austell Funeral Home with the Rev. Marty Bass officiating. The body will be placed in the chapel 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be private.
The family received friends Thursday at the Lutz-Austell Funeral Home.

J.G. Hawkins
SHELBY - Mr. J.G. Hawkins, 75, of 5201 Spring Lane, died Tuesday, April 3, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Robert A. and Gerthie Blanton Hawkins. He was self - employed in construction and was a member of Patterson Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, James Hawkins, Carl Hawkins, Lawrence Hawkins and Yates Hawkins; and a sister, Olene Pearson.
He is survived by his wife, Fannie Panther Hawkins; two sons and daughters - in - law, Larry and Kathy Hawkins and Lester "Pete" and Susan Hawkins, all of Shelby; a daughter and son - in - law, Linda and Edward Swink of Mooresboro; two sisters, Mary Foster of Shelby and Irene Pearson of Kings Mountain; 11 grandchildren, Trent Swink, Amy Swink, Lorie McCurry, Dean McCurry, Brent Hawkins, Sharon Hawkins, Neely Hawkins, Lucas Hawkins, Brad Hawkins, Jessica Morehead and Jennifer Morehead; and five great - grandchildren, Carson Lea Swink, Abbey Swink, Greg Hawkins, Gage Swink and Chancey McCurry.
The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. at Patterson Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Waters officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family received friends Thursday at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home Chapel.

Joe Humphries
FOREST CITY - Mr. Joseph William "Joe" Humphries, 65, of 198 Sunnyside Drive, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
A graveside service will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery with military honors.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 6 to 8 at Harrelson Funeral Home in Caroleen.

Elvenia Pruitt
LINCOLNTON - Mrs. Elvenia Self Pruitt, 85, of Brian Center, Lincolnton, formerly of Ballard Street, Cherryville, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Lincoln Medical Center.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Capps Memorial Missionary Methodist Church in Cherryville with the Revs. Bobby Holtclaw and Keith Love officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow at North Brook Church Cemetery in Cherryville.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Carpenter's Funeral Home in Cherryville, and at other times at the home of a son, Avery Pruitt, 1912 N. Aspen St., Lincolnton.

Marion Benfield
CASAR - Mr. Marion Wilson Benfield, 87, of 950 St. Paul Church Road, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at Brian Center in Lincolnton.
Born Dec, 26, 1913, in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Fonzo Wallace and Lula Jane Towery Benfield. He was retired as a self - employed mechanic and farmer.
He was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church, where he was the Sunday school superintendent, a choir member of the Saint Paul Quartet for more than 25 years. He also served on the Casar School Board, and was a charter member of Casar Volunteer Fire Department, which he helped organize and served as its first fire chief for 25 years. He helped start the Upper Cleveland County Sanitary District.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dwight Benfield; and three sisters, Mildred Eskridge, Nettie Ward and Edith Ledford.
He is survived by his wife, Gazzie Martin Benfield; two sons and daughters - in - law, Marion Jr. and Dalida Benfield of New Braunfels, Texas, and Dale and Joyce Benfield of Lynchburg, Va.; two daughters and sons - in - law, Nell and Scott Uzzell of Mooresville and Winnie and Loyde Carpenter of Hickory; two brothers, Gene Benfield of Greenville and Harold Benfield of Lawndale; four sisters, Joan Machleit of Fredericksburg, Va., Bessie Queen of Shelby, Helen Wease and Betty Cook, both of Lawndale; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great - grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church with the Rev. Ernest W. Speagle officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston.

Ophelia Ledford
SHELBY - Mrs. Annie Ophelia Ledford, 85, of 619 S. Dekalb St., died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Luther Gordon and Beulah Crowder Haynes. She was a homemaker and avid gardener. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Shelby.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Ledford and two brothers, Luther Glenn Haynes and A.V. "Bud" Haynes.
She is survived by two daughters and one son - in - law, Brenda Gettys of the home and Jewel and Bob Wineland of LaPorte, Ind.; a sister and brother - in - law, Marjorie Haynes and James "Jr." Ashley of Shelby; 11 grandchildren; 23 great - grandchildren; and seven great - great - grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. Ernest Arnold and Larry Franks officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.
Burial will follow at Rehobeth UMC Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Ruenette Whitaker
EARL - Ms. Ruenette Deaton Whitaker, 61, of 115 McCurry Road, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Hall County, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Oscar Harrison and Essie Cain Deaton. She attended Howards Business College and retired after 35 years with PPG Industries. She was a member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church.
She is survived by one daughter and one son - in - law, Tamara Whitaker and Gene McCurry; two grandchildren, Courtney McCurry and Cody McCurry; three brothers, Hoyt Deaton, Robert Deaton and Royce Deaton, all of Shelby; and five sisters, Vonceil Pridemore of Gaffney, S.C., Barbara Blanchard of Spartanburg, S.C., Mildred Keller of Manning, S.C., and Shirley Poteat and Betty Lanning, both of Shelby.
The funeral was Tuesday at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Crystal Champion officiating. Burial was private.
The family received friends after the service in the church sanctuary, and at other times the family will be at the home of Bobby and Ann Thackerson, 2723 Blacksburg Highway in Earl.
Memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 116, Earl, NC 28038, or to Sandy Plains Baptist Church Flower Fund, 2112 New House Road, Shelby, NC 28150.

Mary Beavers
FAIRBURN, Ga. - Mrs. Mary Fisher Beavers, of 60 Milo Fisher St., died.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Marie Herndon of Shelby.
She is survived by one son and daughter - in - law, Spencer and Elizabeth Beavers of Fairburn, Ga.; one daughter, Mrs. Helen Elaine Smith of Fairburn; five grandchildren, Anthony Hoyle and Rodney Beavers, both of Georgia, Pamela Mitchell of Shelby, Manaya Hurry and Willie Eric Smith; seven great - grandchildren; four sisters - in - law and other nephews, nieces and cousins.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Mark United Methodist Church in Fairburn with the Rev. Rodney Beavers officiating. The body will be placed in the church two hours before the service. Burial will follow in the Marietta National Cemetery in Marietta, Ga.
Gus Thornhills Funeral Home in Fairburn is in charge of arrangements.

William 'Bill' McDaniel Jr.
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. William R. 'Bill' McDaniel Jr., 70, of 3712 Tryon Courthouse Road, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The funeral and burial will be private.
The family will receive friends at the home any time.

'J.C.' Banks
SHELBY - Mr. Joseph Columbus "J.C." Banks, 70, of 207 East Ross Grove Road, died Sunday April 8, 2001, at Hospice of Wendover.
Born on Sept. 17, 1930, in Lincoln County, he was the son of Pearl Banks of Lincoln County and the late Sid Banks.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Mae Jefferson Banks and a brother, Theodore Banks.
In addition to his mother, he survived by his two sons, Richard Philips of Shelby and Jamie Banks of Kings Mountain; four daughters, Vernita Archie of Kings Mountain, Debra Adams and Fredia Hopper, both of Shelby, and Shelia Burris of Kings Mountain; four brothers and a sister - in - law, C.B. Banks of Kings Mountain, T.S. Vernon and Rosevelt and Clara Banks, all of Lincolnton; four sisters, Catherine Nichols, Chris Bess, Annie Bryant and Leatha Williams; 18 grandchildren; 10 great - grandchildren; and other nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Walls Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathaniel Craig officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service.

Wendell Ledford
LAWNDALE - Mr. James Wendell Ledford, 82, of 5240 Casar Road, died Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at Wake Forest University Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born Nov. 7, 1918, the son of the late Clarence Sr. and Lona Esther Norman Ledford. He was a member of Clover Hill United Methodist Church and the Adult Sunday school class. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and served in the Pacific Theater, where he participated in the invasion at Okinawa and received the expert rifleman medal. He had worked at Drexel Heritage Furniture Co. in Morganton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gary Stephen Ledford; a daughter, Esther Dianne Ledford; three brothers, Hoyt Ledford, Clarence Leford Jr. and Harold Ledford; and one sister, Ruth L. Hastings.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Frances Webb Ledford of the home; a son and daughter - in - law, Maynard and Deanna Ledford of Shelby; a daughter and son - in - law, Betty and Glenn Bridges of Ellenboro; a brother, Harris Ledford of San Antonio, Texas; a sister Mattie L. Wright of Lawndale; two grandsons and a granddaughter - in - law, David Bridges of Ellenboro and Michael and Traci Ledford of Shelby; a granddaughter and grandson - in - law, Denise and Joey Strickland of Ellenboro; four great - grandchildren, Kari Strickland, Lauren Strickland, Allen Strickland and Aliyah Ledford.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Clover Hill United Methodist Church with the Revs. Edward Lee and Zeno Wright officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

FOREST CITY - The Rev. Mary Kate Waymon, 99, formerly of Gypsy Street, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, at the Sutter Roseville Hospital in Roseville, Calif.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Saint Luke Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Tryon with Bishop Charles Helton officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Good Shephard Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the Russell Tabernacle Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Spindale.

Rebecca Montieth
RUTHERFORDTON - Mrs. Rebecca Wallace Montieth, 88, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Autumn Care.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Gilboa United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at McMahan's Funeral Home.

Homer Starnes
EARL - Mr. Homer Lee Starnes, 90, of 204 Rosemont Drive, died Tuesday, April 10, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Robert Jackson and Dora Lee Warren Starnes. He was a World War II veteran and was a first sergeant in the Army. He was in the infantry and was in the Normandy Invasion in France. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and European Theater Ribbon with five battle stars. He was a member of Bridgeport Masonic Lodge No. 543, the 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and the No. 3 Ruritan Club. He was a member at New Hope Baptist Church where he was a deacon emeritus and Sunday school teacher. He was retired from United Van Lines and the Martin Transfer and Storage Co., Charlotte.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Marvin Starnes, Earl Starnes, Fred Starnes, Ray Starnes and Warren Starnes; and two sisters, Ann Puett and Katherine Starnes.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances Hackney Starnes; one daughter and one son - in - law, Virginia "Jen" and Marvin Beatty of Suffolk, Va.; one brother and one sister - in - law, R.J. and Betty Starnes of Valdese; and three grandchildren, Marvin Beatty IV and wife, Melissa, of Charlotte, Virginia Lee Beatty of Virginia Beach, Va., and Heather Beatty Doyle and her husband, Tom, of Nags Head.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church in Earl with the Revs. David Gordon, Latt Beshears and Broadus Heatherly officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Buffalo Baptist Church in Blacksburg, S.C.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the church fellowship hall.
Memorials may be made to the Hope Center Building Fund, New Hope Baptist Church, P.O. Box 116, Earl, NC 28038.
