Ruth H. DeBrew
SHELBY - Mrs. Ruth H. DeBrew, 83, of 320 Poplar Springs Church Road, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Hospice at Wendover.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence E. and Agatha Jones Hamrick. She was a retired food service worker for the Cleveland County Schools. She was a lifelong member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church and was a member of Triple L and Orginal Singles Group, Choir and W.M.U. Bible Study Group.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James C. DeBrew.
She is survived by a son and daughter - in - law, Carl and Carolyn DeBrew of Shelby; two daughters and sons - in - law, Rosemary and Ted Wortman of Shelby and Diana and Harold Kendrick of Lawndale; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Craig DeBrew and his wife, Krista, of Waynesville, Cameron DeBrew and his wife, Donna, of Columbia, S.C., Clint DeBrew and his wife, Jacqueline, of Greensboro, Kim Borders of Shelby, Kristi Bowen and her husband, Marty, of Shelby, Erin Sarratt and her husband, Jason, of Earl, Donna Kendrick Beam of Lawndale, Robert Kendrick and wife, Ann, of Shelby, and Jason Kendrick and his wife, Angela, of Lawndale; 14 great - grandchildren, Katie DeBrew, Carrie Anne DeBrew, Kristina DeBrew, Justin DeBrew, Jenna DeBrew, Kayler DeBrew, Caroline Borders, Alexis Bowen, Mary Logan Bowen, Rob Kendrick, Celeste Kendrick, Tyler Kendrick, Amanda Beam and Alisa Beam.
A graveside service will be today at 4 p.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. James Richardson and the Rev. Clyde Buckner officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 5:30 to 6:45 at the Poplar Springs Baptist Church Family Life Center. A memorial service will be tonight at 7 at Poplar Springs Baptist Church.
The family will also be at 320 Poplar Springs Church Road.

Ralph Carpenter Sr.
BESSEMER CITY - Mr. Ralph Glenn Carpenter Sr., 58, of 209 New Moon Lane, died Saturday, April 7, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Gastonia with Richard Reese officiating. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at 209 New Moon Lane.

Roger Wright
FOREST CITY - Mr. Roger Terry Wright, 42, of 116 Greenwood St., died Monday, April 9, 2001, at his home.
The funeral will be Thursday at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Crowe's Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Rutherford City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 6 to 8 at Crowe's Funeral Home.

Vivian Hoyle
FALLSTON - Mrs. Vivian Hayes Hoyle, 75, of 128 Fruitwood Drive, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born on July 15, 1925, in Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Charlie and Emma Crowder Hayes. She was a homemaker and a member of Fallston Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clemmie Osborne Hoyle Jr., and a sister, Avenella Garver.
She is survived by a daughter and son - in - law, Donna and Mitchell Queen of Lawndale; two brothers, Gerald Hayes and J.H. Hayes, both of Shelby; two sisters, Edna Black of Shelby and Edith Brackett of Lawndale; a granddaughter and her husband, Denise and Richard Yount of Lattimore; a grandson, Leland Queen of Lawndale; and a great - granddaughter, Savanna Yount.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Fallston Baptist Church with the Revs. Scott Norton and Jim Brackett officiating. The body will be placed in the church from 6 to 8 p.m.
A graveside service and burial will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Rose Hill Memorial Park with the Revs. Scott Norton and Jim Brackett officiating.
The family will receive friends Wednesday night from 6 to 7:30 at Fallston Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
Memorials may be made to Fallston Baptist Church, PO Box 116, Fallston, NC 28042.

Mary Lou Sutton
SHELBY - Mrs. Mary Lou Britt Sutton, 92, of 515 Woodside Drive, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Perquimans County, she was a daughter of the late James Thomas and Elizabeth Elliott Britt. After graduation from college, she taught school for 10 years in Perquimans County. She belonged to Central United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Women's Bible Class and United Methodist Women and was a former Sunday school teacher. She was a supervisor with the Cleveland County Department of Social Services.
She is survived by a daughter and son - in - law, Betty and Stephen S. Royster of Shelby; four brothers, Carl Britt of Shelby and Alvin Britt, Sam Britt and Julian Britt of Houston; two sisters, Helene Britt and Katherine Jones of Shelby; three grandchildren, Stephen S. Royster III and his wife, Susan, of Asheville, Michael Royster and his wife, Ann, of Shelby, and Susan Royster of Charlotte; and four great - grandchildren, Laura Royster, Erin Royster, Sarah Royster and Paul Royster.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home, with Dr. Joe Reeves and the Rev. Tony Tench officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home after the service. At other times, the family is at the home.
Memorials may be made to Central United Methodist Church, 200 E. Marion St., Shelby, NC 28150.

Pauline Cole
SHELBY - Mrs. Pauline Nalley Cole, 68, of 110 Cole Drive, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Black Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Grady Von Wiggins and Maggie Melton Nalley. She was the owner and operator of Pauline's Beauty Shop.
She is survived by her husband, Claude G. Cole of the home; a brother and sister - in - law, Charles and Jeanette Nalley of Shelby; a brother - in - law and sister - in - law, Herman and Lois Cole of Siler City, S.C.; and a sister - in - law, Nancy Nalley of Shelby.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home, with the Revs. Alan Sailors and Doug Mathis officiating. Entombment will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Nell Weaver
SHERMAN, Texas - Mrs. Nell R. Weaver, born Sept. 5, 1918, in Sherman, Texas, died.
The third daughter of George and Maude Richardson, she graduated from Sherman High School and attended Dallas College of Drama.
She married George H. Ropp, an Air Force pilot from Shelby, in 1942. They had one daughter, Pamela Ann. Capt. Ropp died in an airplane crash in 1946. Nell married Ralph Weaver in August 1950. They adopted a son, George.
She was a Girl Scout troop leader, president of Bell County Legal Secretaries Association and received an award from the American Red Cross for 20 years of volunteer service. She attended First Baptist Church in Sherman.
She is survived by her husband, Lt. Col. (U.S. Army Ret.) Ralph Weaver; children, Pamela Casler of Las Vegas and George Weaver of Belton, Texas; two grandchildren, Audrey Nell Allen and Riley Calhoun Casler; three great - grandchildren; nieces, Jo Ann Butler of Sherman and Iris Cappleman of Arlington, Texas; a nephew, Richard Cappleman of Fort Worth, Texas; great - niece, Lisa Barnes of Sherman; and great - nephew, Kurt Cappleman of Fort Worth.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Weed - Corley - Fish Funeral Home in Austin, Texas.
There will be no funeral service. Burial will be at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, San Antonio.

Eugene McCraw
BLACKSBURG, S.C. - Mr. Eugene Curtis McCraw, 78, of 516 Dravo Road, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Johnny and Bessie Mooney McCraw. He retired from textiles and was a Baptist.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Annie May Wright McCraw.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Helen Spake McCraw; two sons, Donald Sisk of Supply and Randy Sisk of Shelby; four daughters, Patty Jo Wylie of Blacksburg, Diane Cooper and Dixie Drewey of Shelby and Linda Mae Mayfield of Gaffney, S.C.; a brother, Melvin McCraw of Gastonia; a sister, Mary Lizzer Doster of Lincolnton; 18 grandchildren and 20 great - grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home in Caroleen, with the Rev. Ronald Lackey officiating. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home. At other times, the family is at the home of his brother - in - law, Emanuel Spake, 516 Dravo Road, Blacksburg.

Emmie Teese
GAFFNEY, S.C. - Mrs. Emmie Rebekah Robertson Teese, 71, of 124 Robinhood Lane, died Saturday, April 14, 2001, at her home.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 5 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of Incarnation, with the Rev. Gordon Hamilton officiating.
White Columns Funeral Service of Gaffney is in charge of arrangements.

Carrie Bass
SHELBY - Mrs. Carrie Belle Baird Bass, 97, of 1101 N. Morgan St., died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Mecklenberg County, she was the daughter of the late Isaac Brown and Martha Hood Baird. She retired from nursing after 25 years of service. She was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David L. Bass.
She is survived by one granddaughter, Melissa Dale Carrier of Denver; two grandsons, Danny Norman Carrier of Morristown, Tenn., and David Nathan Carrier of Greenville, Tenn.; one son - in - law, Carl Phillip Carrier of Greenville, Tenn.; one sister, Berta Baird Gibson of Charlotte; two nieces, Mabel Lacey and her husband, Morris, and Ann Anderson, and her husband, Allan, all of Shelby; three great - grandchildren; and four great - great - grandchildren.
The graveside service will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Sardis Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Charlotte with Dr. John Campbell of Shelby Presbyterian Church officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service.
Memorials may be made to Shelby Presbyterian Church Soup Lunch, 226 E. Graham St., Shelby, NC 28150.

Bonnie Geer
RUTHERFORDTON - Mrs. Bonnie Jo Norville Geer, 67, of 227 Tanner St., died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at her home.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Crowe's Mortuary with the Rev. Dean Baughn officiating.
Burial will be in Rutherfordton City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8:30 at the mortuary.

Thomas Swofford
FOREST CITY - The Rev. Thomas H. Swofford, 97, formerly of Forest City, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Asbury Acres Healthcare Center in Maryville, Tenn.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Forest City with the Revs. David H. Hobson and Delores Queen officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends an hour before the service at the church.
Harrelson Funeral Home of Caroleen is in charge of arrangements.

Hazel Gates
LOUISEVILLE, Miss. - Mrs. Hazel Gates died Friday, April 13, 2001.
Memorial services were held Wednesday at Beck Funeral Home.
Burial will be Friday at 10 a.m. in Ebenezer Church Cemetery in Kings Mountain.
J.W. Gill & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Murray Beam Sr.
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Murray Vincent Beam Sr., 84, of 4020 Muirfield Drive, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at his home.
Born Jan. 16, 1917, in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Henry Lee and Odell Brinkley Beam. He was founder and owner of Beam Grading Co. of Cherryville. A World War II Army veteran, he fought in Germany. He was a former member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. A lifelong member of First Wesleyan Church of Cherryville, he had taught Sunday school, served as Sunday school superintendent for 28 years, and served on the administrative board. He was a benefactor to many charities.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Merlyn McGinnis Beam, in 1974; and three sisters, Hope Lewis, Faith Edwards and Clara Wallace.
He is survived by his wife, Cathryne Putnam Beam of the home; a son and daughter - in - law, Murray Jr. and Linda S. Beam of Cherryville; a stepson, Paul Richard McLeod of Charlotte; three daughters and sons - in - law, Janet and Robert Howell of Shelby, and Lenita and Bob Woodruff and Vickie and Eric Duncan of Cherryville; a stepdaughter and her husband, Paul and Joe Pharr of Atlanta; two brothers and sisters - in - law, H. L. and Imogene Beam of Cherryville and Don and Mary Grace Beam of Kings Mountain; two sisters and brothers - in - law, Charity and Jimmy Williams and Jo Eddie and Dick Anderson, all of Cherryville; 11 grandchildren and 14 great - grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First Wesleyan Church, with the Revs. Edwin Chriscoe and Bill Wallace officiating. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Carpenter's Funeral Home Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Lois Dixon
ELLENBORO - Mrs. Lois Swink Dixon, 86, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Mission St. Joseph's Hospital in Asheville.
The graveside funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Hopewell United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at Washburn & Dorsey Funeral Home in Bostic.

SHELBY - Mr. Robert "Bob" Capps, 71, of 508 Smith St., died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at his home.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of Lottie Capps of the home and the late Garwood Capps. He was a self - employed roofer.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by two sons, Stan Capps of Dalton, Ga., and Steve Capps of Mt. Holly; two daughters, Belinda Campbell of New Bern and Shelia Mitchem of Forest City; a brother, Wayne Capps of Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Dot Hardin of Cornelius and Shirley Drewry of Shelby; 11 grandchildren and six great - grandchildren.
The funeral is today at 2 p.m. at Cleveland Funeral Services Chapel, with Bobby Smith officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Emma Davis
SHELBY - Ms. Emma Lee Davis, 63, of 307 E. Ross Grove Church Road, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Clover, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Burley and Mattie Bell Davis. She worked for 34 years at CRMC. She was a member of Good Samaritan Fellowship Church, where she was active on the kitchen committee.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, George Moore and Jimmy Moore.
She is survived by three sons, Andrea Davis, Bertram Davis and Wayne Davis, all of Shelby; three daughters - in - law, Janice Davis, Diane Camp and Cassandra Davis of Shelby; a sister, Louise Moore of Shelby; a sister - in - law, Sara Davis of Landover, Md.; a special friend, Paul Clinton of Shelby; six granddaughters, Tammicka Hoey, Amy Davis, Emily Davis, Keyon Davis and Kellsey Davis; two grandsons, Jayron Barrow and Mario Camp; and one great - grandson, Christopher Hoey.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Good Samaritan Fellowship Church, with the Rev. R. E. Devoe officiating. Burial will be at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service.
