"J.C." Blye Sr.
LAWNDALE - Mr. James Charles "J.C." Blye Sr., 77, of 112 Cam Place, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Hospice at Wendover in Shelby.
Born in Dade County, Fla., he was the son of the late Annie Lizzie Bly. He served in the Army during World War II. He worked as a lab technician for PPG Industries, retiring in 1987 after 24 years of service. He was a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Blye; three sons, James Charles Blye Jr., Daniel Cornell Blye and George Christopher Blye; three daughters, Sandra Ruth Blye - Dailey, Mary Anne Webber and Lillian Nell Blye - Cobb; two sisters, Bessie Mae Hawk and Loette Carter; grandchildren, Edwin Keith Blye, Bryon Olando Blye, Marcus Strong, Sean H. Williams, Tawanna Wallace, Rod Keyi Harper, LaMar D. Turner, Dawn D. Ciarcia, Nelsa L. Feaster and Seymone J. Cobb; and 11 great - grandchildren.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Philadelphia United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roger Hunter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.
Dockery's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Vangie Bass
MORGANTON - Mrs. Vangie Walker Bass, 98, of 6241 Jenkins Road, formerly of Cleveland County, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at Grace Hospital in Morganton.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Missionary Ridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Donald Lovelace officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Sossoman Funeral Home in Morganton. At other times, the family will be at the home.

Ethel Phillips
RUTHERFORDTON - Mrs. Ethel Harrill Phillips, 75, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at Autumn Care of Forest City.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home in Caroleen, with James Harrill, Ronald Harrill and the Rev. Richard Prendergrast officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at the funeral home.

Elizabeth Putnam
WACO - Ms. Charles Elizabeth Putnam, 81, of 347 Putnam St., died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center, Shelby.
A native of Cleveland County, she was born on Oct. 18, 1919 and was the daughter of the late Charles S. and Annie Miller Putnam. She was a retired educator who attended William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Va., Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn., Vanderbilt College in Nashville, Tenn., and Appalachian University in Boone. She was affiliated with Appalachian University as an assistant professor in the Education School for 31 years. After her retirement, she returned to Cleveland County and started the first kindergarten program at Elizabeth Elementary School.
She was a member of Waco Baptist Church where she was active in the church and a Sunday School teacher for 25 years. She was a member of NCAE, Delta Kappa Gamma Society and served on the State Textbook Committee during Governor Sanford's administration. She was also a volunteer at Cleveland Regional Medical Center for more than 20 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph Putnam, Nelson Putnam, Marvin Putnam and Fred Putnam.
She is survived by two nieces, Syble Putnam Hutchison of Waco and Ann Putnam of Ellenboro; one great - nephew, Marvin Hutchison, and his wife, Louann; and two great - great - nephews, Zach and Ruffin Hutchison and Ruffin Hutchison, both of Waco.
A graveside service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Capernaum Cemetery with the Rev. Joe McMurry officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Stamey Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Waco Baptist Church, TeamKids Fund, P.O. Box 297, Waco, NC 28169.

Cheryl Harris
FOREST CITY - Ms. Cheryl Renee Foster Harris, 42, of 130 Foster Road, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Doggett Grove AME Zion Church in the Doggett Grove Community with the Rev. James Staley officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the Doggett Grove Cemetery.
Thompson Brothers Funeral Home, Forest City, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert "Bob" Dorsey Jr.
SHELBY - Mr. Robert M. "Bob" Dorsey Jr., 79, of 1208 Gidney St., died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Hospice at Wendover.
A native of Shelby, he was born Oct. 1, 1921, and was the son of the late Robert M. Dorsey and Eva Wilson Dorsey. He was a salesman for Auto Brokers, Blanton Motors and Rogers Pontiac - Cadillac - Buick. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church where he was in the choir, was a former deacon, and was a Sunday school superintendent and a training union director. He was a veteran of the 30th Division of the Army in World War II, and was also in the European Theatre, 197th, the Field Artillery and was in the D - Day Invasion. In 1993, he was one of two World War II veterans from Cleveland County honored in a display and ceremony at the Battleship U.S.S. North Carolina.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Camp Dorsey of the home; a son, Dr. Barry Dorsey of Rio Grande, Ohio; a daughter, Jeanne Burks of Shelby; a sister, Coleen Raynor of Conyers, Ga.; a brother - in - law and sister - in - law, Mr. and Mrs. Kennon Blanton of Shelby; and three grandchildren, Ginger Burks Jones and her husband, Ben, of Durham; Randy Burks of Wilmington; and Marty Burks of Boone.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church with Dr. Harold Fite officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the church.

Ellen Gragg
SPINDALE - Ms. Ellen Gladden Gragg, 96, of 211 California St., died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Willow Ridge Nursing Center.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the chapel of Crowe Funeral Home with the Revs. Rick Brewer and Jeff Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the Spindale City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Patrick Kloever
COWPENS, S.C. - Mr. Patrick Lawson Kloever, 52, of 2635 Battleground Road, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at his home.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
The family will be at the home.

FOREST CITY - Mrs. Loree Allen Sisk, 78, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Missionary Wesleyan Church. Burial will follow in the Cool Springs Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the church fellowship hall.

Jerome "Danny" Hunter Sr.
LINCOLNTON - Mr. Jerome Alexander "Danny" Hunter Sr., 72, of 1503 Westdale Lane, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Lincoln Medical Center.
The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with the Rev. Wade Wallace officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday night from 7 to 8 at Ebony & White's Funeral Service chapel.

Roosevelt Banks
LINCOLNTON - Mr. Roosevelt Eugene Banks, 67, of 2306 North St., died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Lincoln Nursing Center.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Mount Calvary Baptist Church with the Revs. Benny Thomas and Nathaniel Craig officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.
Ebony & White's Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Carrie Bass
SHELBY - Mrs. Carrie Belle Baird Bass, 97, of 1101 N. Morgan St., died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Mecklenburg County, she was the daughter of the late Isaac Brown and Martha Hood Baird. She retired from nursing after 25 years of service. She was a member of Shelby Presbyterian Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David L. Bass.
She is survived by one granddaughter, Melissa Dale Carrier of Denver; two grandsons, Danny Norman Carrier of Morristown, Tenn., and David Nathan Carrier of Greenville, Tenn.; one son - in - law, Carl Phillip Carrier of Greenville, Tenn.; one sister, Berta Baird Gibson of Charlotte; two nieces, Mabel Lacey, and her husband, Morris, and Ann Anderson, and her husband, Allan, all of Shelby; three great - grandchildren; and four great - great - grandchildren.
A graveside service will be today at 1 p.m. at Sardis Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Charlotte with Dr. John Campbell of Shelby Presbyterian Church officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service.
Memorials may be made to Shelby Presbyterian Church Soup Lunch, 226 E. Graham St., Shelby, NC 28150.

Albert 'Damn Yankee' Holland
SHELBY - Mr. Albert "Damn Yankee" Russell Holland, 82, of 1223 Yarn Mill Road, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Asheville.
Born May 16, 1918, in Grafton, Mass., he was the son of the late Henry and Gertrude Swett Holland. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He retired as a trainer for Windmill Acres Belgian Farms in Newton and had also worked as a stunt driver for the motion picture industry. He helped to organize the New England and North Carolina draft horse and mule associations. He was a member of Cleveland County Horsemen's Association, International Association of Laryngectomees and Guild of Variety Artists. He was a former board member of the Cleveland County Division of the American Cancer Society. He was founder of Piedmont Lost Chords, an organization and support group for laryngectomees in Cleveland County. He was a participant in the Life Enrichment Center.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five sisters, Amber Spahn, Roselma Laflamme, Florentz D'Angona, Vera Summerfelt and Frances Pahr.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Price Holland of Shelby; three sons and two daughters - in - law, Kenneth and LeAnn Holland and Henry Robert Holland, all of Shelby, and Henry and Elinor Prescott of Holly Ridge; one daughter and son - in - law, Glenna and Thomas Hord of Cherryville; three granddaughters, Casey Nodolny of Stamford, Conn., Necia Peskopos and Lacy Holland, both of Shelby; three grandsons, Brian Hord and Christopher Hord, both of Cherryville, and Lee Holland of Shelby; and one sister, Glenna H. Voelkel of Killingworth, Conn.
A memorial service will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at Buffalo Baptist Church, with the Rev. Max Turner Jr. officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church after the service.
Memorials may be made to Life Enrichment Center, 1270 Fallston Road, Shelby, NC 28150, or to the American Cancer Society Shelby Relay for Life, 800 Cherryville Road, Shelby, NC 28150.

Mattie Rumfelt
BLACKSBURG, S.C. - Mrs. Mattie Byars Rumfelt, 91, of 220 Ninety Nine Island Road, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Brookview Nursing Center in Gaffney, S.C.
Services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church, with A.Z. McDaniel and Dr. Charlie Barnard officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Hopewell Baptist Church in Blacksburg. At other times, they will be at the home of Sam and Kathryn Rumfelt, 924 Ninety Nine Island Road, Blacksburg.
White Columns Funeral Home, Blacksburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Walter Nahalewski
FALLSTON - Mr. Walter Nahalewski, 62, of 824 Stagecoach Trail, died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Mary Kendrick
SHELBY - Mrs. Mary Lovelace Kendrick, 93, of Somerset Court of Shelby, formerly of 411 Pleasant Ridge Church Road, died Monday, April 16, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Jonas Alvin and Ellen Victoria Lee Kendrick. She retired from Belk Department Store and was a part - time seamstress at home. She was a former choir member and Sunday school teacher at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. She was a member of Flint Hills Chapter of DAR in Boiling Springs and the Lucille Wall Music Club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, C. Joe Kendrick, and four brothers, Carl Lovelace, John Lovelace, Grady Lovelace and Pinkey Lovelace.
She is survived by a son and daughter - in - law, Joseph Dale and Jewell Kendrick of the Woodbridge community, and two grandchildren and their spouses, Joe and Amy Kendrick of Shelby and Leigh Kendrick and Michael Bell of Boiling Springs.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Terry Cagle officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Willie Hoyle
GASTONIA - Mr. Willie Gean Hoyle, 69, of 119 W. Harrison Ave., died Sunday, April 15, 2001, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Clifford F. and Betsy Grigg Hoyle. He was a maintenance worker and a member of St. Peters AME Zion Church in Gastonia.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Sylvester Hoyle and Robert Lee Hoyle.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Boyd Hoyle of the home; two sons and daughters - in - law, Dr. Reginald E. and Gail T. Hoyle of Lawndale and the Rev. Roger L. and Marilyn R. Hoyle of Charlotte; one daughter and son - in - law, Rita H. and Carlton Brown of Gastonia; three sisters and two brothers - in - law, Vernie H. and Jessie Hopper, Marilyn H. and James Littlejohn and Brenda Crawford, all of Lawndale; two brothers, Norris Hoyle and Charlie Hoyle of Lawndale; one sister - in - law, Virgil Hoyle of Stanley; three grandchildren, Tamarus C. Brown, Shakera S. Hoyle and Daniel J. Hoyle; one great - grandchild, Shaniya Lipscomb; and two stepgrandchildren, Shonda Benton and Carlton Benton.
The funeral is today at 4 p.m. at St. Peters Tabernacle AME Zion Church, with Dr. M.B. Hines and the Rev. Ronnie C. Stinson officiating. Burial will be in Philadelphia United Methodist Church Cemetery, Lawndale.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service.
