Alfred Beam
LAWNDALE - Mr. Alfred Slader Beam, 64, of 3533 Old School Road, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Hattie Thomas Beam Phillips and the late Edward Beam. He was formerly employed by Century Furniture Company of Hickory. He was a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger Beam and Alvin Beam and a sister, Ruby Lee Beam.
In addition to his mother of Lawndale, he is survived by his wife, Thelma Wilson Beam of Shelby; one son, Charles Edward Beam of Morganton; two daughters, Mary Ann Davis and Rebecca Chalk, both of Shelby; three brothers, Sam Beam of Fallston, Johnny Beam of Springfield, Mass.; and Melvin Beam of Shelby; six sisters, Mary Geter and Janice Wimbush, both of Shelby, Mildred Deal and Alline Beam, both of Lawndale, and Barbara Petty of Florida; three grandchildren; and two great - grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Philadelphia United Methodist Church with the Rev. R. L. Hunter officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.
Enloe Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Margaret Sistare
CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Margaret Reid Sistare, 78, of 1005 East Church St., died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at her home.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Cherryville with the Revs. Nathan May and Keith Love officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherryville City Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Carpenter's Funeral Home.

Kenneth McDonald
FOREST CITY - Mr. Kenneth Tanner McDonald, 86, of West Main Street, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be today at 3:30 p.m. at the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with the Revs. Bob Clinard and Don Freshour officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the fellowship hall.
Padgett and King Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Robert Dorsey Jr.
SHELBY - Mr. Robert M. "Bob" Dorsey Jr., 79, of 1208 Gidney St., died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Hospice at Wendover.
A native of Shelby, he was born Oct. 1, 1921, and was the son of the late Robert M. and Eva Wilson Dorsey. He was a salesman for Auto Brokers, Blanton Motors and Rogers Pontiac - Cadillac - Buick. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church where he was in the choir, was a former deacon and Sunday school superintendent and a training union director. He was a veteran of the 30th Division of the Army in World War II, and was also in the European Theatere, 197th, the Field Artillery and was in the D - Day Invasion. In 1993, he was one of two World War II veterans from Cleveland County honored in a display and ceremony at the Battleship U.S.S. North Carolina.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret Camp Dorsey of the home; a son, Dr. Barry Dorsey of Rio Grande, Ohio; a daughter, Jeanne Burks of Shelby; a sister, Coleen Raynor of Conyers, Ga.; a brother - in - law and sister - in - law, Mr. and Mrs. Kennon Blanton of Shelby; and three grandchildren, Ginger Burks Jones and her husband, Ben, of Durham, Randy Burks of Wilmington and Marty Burks of Boone.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church with Dr. Harold Fite officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
The family received friends Friday at the church.
Memorials may be made to Eastside Baptist Church, 1165 Wyke Road, Shelby, NC 28150; or to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, NC 28150.

Ellen Gragg
SPINDALE - Mrs. Ellen Gladden Gragg, 96, of 211 California St., died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Willow Ridge Nursing Center.
The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Crowe Funeral Home, Rutherfordton, with the Revs. Rick Brewer and Jeff Parker officiating. Burial will be in Spindale City Cemetery.
The family received friends Friday at the funeral home.

David Lucas
SHELBY - The Rev. David Edward Lucas, 80, of 804 Elmwood Drive, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Westmoreland County, Va., he was the son of the late Benjamin and Annie Bel Washington Lucas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmer Lucas and Melvin Lucas; and a sister, Blanche Forstoffer.
An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a first sergeant in the Chaplaincy Corps in Italy and Northern Africa Campaigns. He attended Mars Hill College and Southwestern Baptist Seminary College in Fort Worth, Texas. He graduated from Furman College in 1949.
He was a Baptist minister. pastoring at Ross Grove Baptist Church in Shelby and Rock Springs Baptist Church in Rutherford County. He also served in churches in South Carolina, Maryland and New Hampshire.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Barnette Lucas of the home; a son and daughter - in - law, David Lowell and Pam Lucas of Blacksburg, S.C.; two daughters and sons - in - law, Grace and Bobby Dawson of Grover and Wanda and Scott Eaker of Shelby; one sister, Peggy Ellerbusch, of Shelby; six grandchildren, Ricky Greene, Melissa Eaker, Ben Eaker, Kelsey Lucas, Michael Dixon and Nathan Dixon; and two great - grandchildren, Kiara Roseboro and Jordan Eaker.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Westview Baptist Church with the Revs. Jim Brackett and Clyde Kerry officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Cecil Burton Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Westview Baptist Church, 500 Melody Lane, Shelby, NC 28152.

Flora Wilegus
FORISTELL, Mo. - Mrs. Flora Wilhelmine Wilegus, 89, of 630 Highway W, died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.
Born in Foristell, Mo., Dec. 23, 1911, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Charlotte Spielhagen Schnabel. She was a retired assembler of Binkley - Wright City & Weldon Springs TNT Plant. She was a member of Wright City Nazarene Church, where she was a former church organist.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl L. Wilegus.
She is survived by two daughters and a son - in - law, Lorene Carolin Girault of Greenwood, Tenn., and Shirley M. and Billy B. Carter of Shelby; a brother, Fred Schnabel of Foristell; a sister, Lorene A. Thoroughman of Marthasville, Mo.; five grandchildren; seven great - grandchildren; and one great - great grandchild.
The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. at Wright City Nazarene Church with the Revs. Don Davidson and Dan Mund officiating. Burial will be in Anderson Hill Cemetery in Moscow Hills, Mo.
The family received friends Friday at T.E. Pitman Funeral Home.

Mary Smith
CHERRYVILLE - Evangelist Mary Frances Degree Smith, 62, of 519 Mulberry St., died Wednes - day, April 18, 2001, at Hospice at Wendover.
Born in Cleveland County on Oct. 30, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Horace and Margaret Degree. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Ronald Smith.
She was called into ministry on May 20, 1979 and has served as Sunday school teacher and president of the Youth Department at Williford Temple. She has also served as president of the Women's Convention, chaplain at the hospital in Newberry, S.C., and a community worker. She has preached in Cleveland, Charlotte, Newberry, S.C., Anderson, S.C., Sumter, S.C., Kingstree, S.C., and Shelby. She also served as pastor of Mount Olive Righteousness Church of God in Newberry.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel E. Smith; one son, Larry D. Smith, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two daughters - in - law, Shelia Haynes Smith of Shelby and Prelet Smith, of Charlotte; one stepdaughter, Diane Hopper of St. Augustine, Fla.; six brothers and two sisters - in - law, Freddie and Della Degree, Harvey Degree, Joe Degree and Jerry Degree, all of Shelby, Aqeel Horace "Khalilah" Degree Jr. of San Diego and Alfred and Sherrill Degree of San Fransisco; one sister, Pauline Bostic, of New Jersey; one adopted son, Ricky Cansler; five grandchildren, Natasha Finger and husband, Rodney, of Gastonia, Annette Chambers and husband, Agerent, of Shelby, Shonda Smith of Charlotte and Ronnie Parrott and Fyrece Parrott, both of Shelby; four great - grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Hopewell Baptist Church with Bishop Andrew Williford and the Rev. Lawrence Roseboro officiating. Burial will be in Webb Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at Williford Temple Righteous Church of God, Buffalo Street Shelby.

Earl Browne
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Earl David Browne, 66, of 3825 Tryon Courthouse Road, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Brian Center in Brevard.
The funeral will be today at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey - Cherryville Funeral Home with Dr. Bill Lowe officiating. Burial will be at City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville.
The family will receive friends today from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Freida Presnell
SHELBY - Mrs. Freida A. Presnell, 75, of Surfside Beach and Pageland, S.C., died Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The funeral was Friday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Pageland, S.C. Burial was in the church cemetery.
The family received friends at Sutton Funeral Home in Pageland.

Wayne Heavner
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Wayne L. Heavner, 62, of 210 N. Hoyle St., died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Carolina Medical Center in Charlotte.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Stamey - Cherryville Funeral Home. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Destinee Beam
SHELBY - Miss Destinee Iyanla Beam, 9 months, of 308 Olsen Drive, died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center.
She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Starlett Beam and Antwan Teagle of Jacksonville and her father, Augustine Schonader of Jacksonville.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Sincere Irayah Beam of Shelby; grandparents, Betty and Willard Beam of the home and Mietta and Augustine Sherman Sr. of Liberia, Africa; a special aunt, Chastidy McIntosh of the home; another aunt, Monica Schmader of Providence, R.I.; an uncle, Chad McIntosh of Greensboro; and a special cousin, DeVonta McIntosh of Shelby.
The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Walls Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Nathaiel Craig officiating.
The body will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service for a quiet hour.
The family will receive friends at the home.

Emma Davis
SHELBY - Ms. Emma Lee Davis, 63, of 307 E. Ross Grove Church Road, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Clover, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Burley and Mattie Bell Davis. She worked for 34 years at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. She was a member of Good Samaritan Fellowship Church, where she was active on the kitchen committee.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, George Moore and Jimmy Moore; and one granddaughter, Brianna Davis.
She is survived by three sons, Andrea Davis, Bertram Davis and Wayne Davis, all of Shelby; three daughters - in - law, Janice Davis, Diane Camp and Cassandra Davis, all of Shelby; a sister, Louise Moore of Shelby; a sister - in - law, Sara Davis of Landover, Md.; a special friend, Paul Clinton of Shelby; six granddaughters, Tammicka Hoey, Amy Davis, Aliyah Davis, Emily Davis, Keyon Davis and Kellsey Davis; two grandsons, Jayron Barrow and Mario Camp; one great - grandson, Christopher Hoey; four special nieces, Pricilla Wright, Mary "Lokey" Blanks, Bonita Hopper and Janece Davis; and a host of nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Good Samaritan Fellowship Church with the Rev. R.E. Devoe officiating. Burial will be at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service.

James McKinney
MOORESBORO - Mr. James Henry McKinney, 85, of Winn Road, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Henry W. and Belle Waters McKinney. He retired from the Cleveland County Sheriff's Office as chief deputy with 30 years of service. He served in the Navy in World War II in the Pacific on the destroyer John W. Weeks. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church, the American Legion and the Cleveland County Law Enforcement Association.
He is survived by his wife, Lillie Mae Tate McKinney of the home; three sons and daughters - in - law, Jerry and Glenda McKinney, Buddy and Ruby McKinney and Joel and Donna McKinney, all of Mooresboro; four grandchildren; five great - grandchildren; and one great - great - grandchild.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church with Dr. David A. Irish and the Rev. Buddy Morehead officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral at the church fellowship building.

Mary Broadwell
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Mary Leigh Mauney Broadwell, 51, of 406 Garrison Drive, died Monday, April 23, 2001, at her home.
A memorial service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church with the Revs. Ralph Wallace, Edgar Cooper and James Dougherty officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the church fellowship hall.

George McWhirter
SHELBY - Mr. George Ray McWhirter, 76, of 2920 Hugh Harrill Road, died Monday, April 23, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Ellis McWhirter and Pauline Wall McWhirter. He retired from Dover Mills No. 2 in Cherryville. He was a member of Lattimore Baptist Church. He was a Navy veteran of World War II.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline McWhirter; a son and daughter - in - law, Steve and Shirley McWhirter of Lattimore; one brother, Ben McWhirter of Shelby; one sister, Maxine Biggerstaff of Mount Holly; and two grandchildren, Mark McWhirter and Jeff McWhirter.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Lattimore Baptist Church with the Revs. Max Burgin and Dennis Bailey officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 7:30 at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.
