Bobby Fincannon
FOREST CITY - Retired Master Sgt. Bobby Joe Fincannon, 63, of 127 Hunter Carver Lane, died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Spartanburg (S.C.) Regional Medical Center.
Born In Union Mills June 14, 1937, he was the son of the late Champ and Maggie Johnson Fincannon. In the Army from 1953 to 1977, he served in Korea, Thailand, France, two tours in Germany and two tours in Vietnam. He retired as a master sergeant. He later worked as shift manager at Dan River Mills in Spindale and was a member of Spindale United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille Philbeck Fincannon of the home; a son, David Fincannon, and daughter - in - law, Jackie Fincannon, of Waldorf, Md.; a daughter, Christine F. High, and son - in - law, Harry High, of Leicester; a daughter, Catherine F. Parnell, and son - in - law, Tim Parnell, of Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Nancy Graybill, and brother - in - law, Cecil Graybill, of Travelers Rest, S.C.; a sister - in - law, Barbara Philbeck Higgins, and brother - in - law, Harlan Higgins, of Spindale; four granddaughters, Alexandra Fincannon of Waldorf, Charlie Parnell and Samantha Parnell, both of Nashville, and Heather Wright of Leicester; two grandsons, Timothy Parnell of Nashville and Bobby Joe Wright of Leicester; father - in - law, A.H. Philbeck, and mother - in - law, Hazel Philbeck, of Spindale; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Sunday at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Crowe's Funeral Home, Rutherfordton, with the Revs. Dan Ramsey and Joe Fulk officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.

'Buck' Ruppe
GAFFNEY. S.C. - Mr. Joe Raymond "Buck" Ruppe, 80, of 6011/2 W. Smith St., died Friday, May 11, 2001, at Upstate Carolina Medical Center in Gaffney.
Born in Gaffney, he was a son of the late S. Fitzhugh and Lue Della Harris Ruppe. He retired as a house painter and security guard. He was a member of West End Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Walmer Ruppe, Freeman Ruppe, Kattie Ruppe, Ruby Thrift, Lemuel Maffey, Ruth Thrift and Lou Erie Kirby.
He is survived by his wife, Ollie V. Ruppe of the home; daughters and sons - in - law, Sylvia and Lawrence Moore of Gaffney, Francis and Sam Caveny of Kings Mountain, Mary Lou R. Ellard of Louisville, Ky., and Helen R. Vassey of Gaffney; a son and daughter - in - law, Joe V. and Jean Ruppe of Gaffney; 11 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 17 great - grandchildren; four stepgreat - grandchildren; and three great - great - grandchildren; a sister, Bertie R. Thomas of Cowpens, S.C.; and brother, Marshall Ruppe of Charlotte.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Shuford - Hatcher Funeral Home in Gaffney. Burial will be in Frederick Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home, and at other times at the home.

Sonya Thompson
SHELBY - Mrs. Sonya Thompson Byers, 21, of 902 Foxcroft Circle, Apartment A, died Thursday, May 10, 2001.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Enloe Mortuary.
The family will be at the home of her parents, 2301 Mason St., Shelby.

FOREST CITY - Mrs. Vivian Nanney McDonald, 85, of 1033 W. Main St., died Friday, May 11, 2001, at her home.
The funeral will be Monday at 3:30 p.m. at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church on Hudlow Road with the Revs. Bob Clinard and Don Freshour officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church fellowship hall one hour before the service.

GASTONIA - Mrs. Bobbie Steele Brady West, 70, died Friday, May 11, 2001, at Alexander Place.
She was the daughter of the late Luther and Lula Holcome Brady. She retired from Doran Textiles and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Carl Andrew West of Port Charlotte, Fla.; two sons, Mike West of Belton, S.C., and Scott West of Shelby; a daughter, Deborah Malone of Belton; four grandchildren, Jesse West of Easley, S.C., and Isaac Ford, Matthew West and Derek Malone, all of Belton; a great - grandson, Luke West of Easley; and a sister - in - law, Betty Hipp of Kings Mountain.
A graveside service will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. at Little Mountain Baptist Church in Wellford, S.C., with the Rev. Ed Brown officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home in Shelby.

A native of Butler, Tenn., he was the son of the late Joe Wheeler Reed and Blanche Reed Buchanan. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Military Police in France and the European Theater. He re - tired as a lineman from Duke Power. He was a mem - ber of Harmony Baptist Church in Elizabethton, Tenn. In addition to his par - ents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Ja - mie Reed; one brother; and four sisters. A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Charlie Martin and Arlee Beaty Lail. He was employed by Cleveland Community College as man - ager of plant operations. He was formerly employed by Doran Textiles as a manag - ing supervisor in research and development. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and was the past president of N.C. Asso - ciation of Community Col - lege Facility Operators. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Lovelace Lail; one brother, Bill Lail of Grover; two aunts, Eunice Toney and Hazel Singleton, both of Kings Mountain; and several nieces and nephews. The graveside service will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Ron Caulder officiating. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Cecil M. GROVER — Mrs. Bever - lyn Marie Evans, 34, of 123 Jetter Road, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Mercy Hospi - tal, Charlotte. She was born March 5, 1967, the daughter of Margie Smith and Willard Hall. She was a former employee of Fasco for 12 years. She at - tended King’s College in Charlotte. She was a mem - ber of the Light Oak Baptist Church and was in the Light Oak Baptist Sunday School Department. In addition to her parents she is survived by her hus - band, Nathan Maurice Ev - ans Sr.; one son, Nathan Maurice Evans Jr.; one daughter, Montesha Sherelle Evans; mother - in - law and father - in - law, Nathaniel and Joyce Evans; two brothers, Christopher Hall and Jayson Hall; two sisters, Veronica “Ronnie” Smith and Kimbra Hall; two sisters - in - law, Donna Evans - Gidney and Katrina Evans; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, great - nieces and great - nephews. Born on July 26, 1948, in Cherokee County, he was the son of Howard and Mat - tie Boyd Littlejohn of Grover. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daugh - ter of the late Willis Benja - min and Minnie Melton Melton. She was a home - maker and a member of East Shelby Church of God. In addition to her par - ents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jason P. Oliver; and two sons, W.C. Oliver and Clyde Oliver. She is survived by two sons and a daughter - in - law, Winford and Mary Ann Oliver of Grover and Dwight Oliver of Bostic; five grand - children; five great - grandchildren; and one great - great grandchildren. Mary Harrill
SHELBY - Mrs. Mary Byers Harrill, 92, of Cleveland Pines Nursing Center, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at her home.
A native of Meckl - enburg County, she was the daughter of the late John Wilburn and Lilly Austell Byers. She retired as office manager of Security Insurance Agency, First National Bank of Shelby. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Shelby.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Black Harrill; one son, Jay Black Harrill Jr.; and one sister, Agnes Byers Loving.
She is survived by one daughter, Mary H. Cooper of Gastonia; one sister, Emily B. Gardner of Shelby; one brother, John Wilburn Byers Jr. of Charlotte; three grandchildren; and three great - grandchildren.
A graveside service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery with Dr. Gene Watterson officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 120 N. Lafayette St., Shelby, NC 28150.

Jean Speights
GASTONIA - Mrs. Jeanette "Jean" Nixon Speights, 48, of 4534 Tekoa Drive, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at her home.
A native of Orangeburg, S.C., she was the daughter of the late John Blair Nixon Jr. She was raised in Blacksville, S.C. She became a born - again Christian as a young girl. She graduated as valedictorian from Blacksville High School in 1971. She attended Georgia Southern and the College of Charleston, majoring in English. She married Samuel J. Speights Jr. in 1977. She had two sons and one daughter, all delivered by natural childbirth, and homeschooled all three through high school. She endured 17 years of Lupus and had breast cancer for more than three years.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her mother, Pauline White Nixon of Blacksville, S.C.; two sons, Jonathan S. Speights and Matthew N. Speights, of the home; one daughter, Heather A. Speights, of the home; and one brother, John Blair Nixon III of Barnwell, S.C.
A graveside service will be today at 11 a.m. at Evergreen Cemetery in Belmont with the Rev. Charles Surrett officiating. A memorial service will be tonight at 7 at Emmanuel Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, where she was a member.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaston County, P.O. Box 3984, Gastonia, NC 28053.

Ward Logan
LINCOLNTON - Mr. Ward Eugene Logan, 40, of 228 Newbold St., died Monday, May 14, 2001, at his home.
The funeral will be Saturday at 4 p.m. at Ebony and White's Funeral Service with Brother Chuck McKale officiating. Burial will follow in Hollybrook Cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service in the chapel.

Laurence Muench
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Laurence Walter Muench, M.D., 64, of 310 Downing Drive, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of St. Louis, Mo., he was the son of the late Albert Frederick and Virginia Kueter Muench. Dr. Muench grew up in Evanston, Ill., where he became an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Evanston Township High School, where he was a national finalist in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search. He was later inducted in the Sports Hall of Fame at his high school. He was an Illinois Scholar at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn., where he was captain of the swimming team and graduated with a B.S. Degree, Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his M.D. degree at Washington University, St. Louis, served a rotating internship at Case Western Reserve University, in Cleveland, Ohio, and had a residency in surgery and anesthesiology at Washington University.
He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War, where he was a flight surgeon with a rank of captain and was based in Okinawa. He practiced anesthesiology in Denver, Colo., Colorado Springs, Colo., Sioux City, Iowa, Kansas City, Mo., and served as chief of anesthesiology at Kings Mountain Hospital.
He was certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology, was a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the American Medical Association, the N.C. Medical Association and the Cleveland County Medical Society. He was a member of the Kings Mountain Rotary Club, a former member of the Kings Mountain Kiwanis Club, a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Kings Mountain, where he served as treasurer, a vestry member and a licensed lay reader. He was a member of the Gaston Choral Society.
He is survived by his wife, Esther Moulthrop Muench; three sons, Jeffrey E. Muench of Philadelphia, James Frederick and Frances Guthrie Muench of Columbia, Mo.; one daughter and one son - in - law, Jennifer Lynn Muench and Neill McCauley Laney of Franklinton; one brother, Dr. Karl Muench of Miami; one sister, Ruth Ann Muench Williams of Evanston, Ill.; two grandchildren, Nolan Muench and April Muench, both of Columbia, Mo.
A memorial service will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Kings Mountain with the Revs. Ken Gillikin and Harwood Smith officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Dallas Blanton
BOILING SPRINGS - Ms. Dallas Ruth Blanton, 64, of 4103 James Lovelace Road, died Monday, May 14, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Roger and Edna Roberts Blanton.
She was a member of Green Bethel Church and graduated from Green Bethel School. She was formerly employed by Cone Mills and Crawley Hospital as a CNA.
She is survived by five sons, Larry Blanton of Charlotte, Donald Blanton of Gaffney, S.C., Everette Blanton, Tracy Blanton and Maverick Blanton, all of Boiling Springs; five daughters, Teressa McDowell of Forest City, Marva Ferrell of Raeford, Judith McClain, Zelda Blanton and Erica Blanton, all of Boiling Springs; a special friend, William Surratt of Boiling Springs; 25 grandchildren; 19 great - grandchildren; relatives and friends.
The funeral will be today at 4 p.m. at Green Bethel Baptist Church with the Rev. Wade Wallace officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.
