Pauline Tessner
SHELBY - Mrs. Grace Pauline Tessner, 82, formerly of 819 Pleasant Drive, died Wednes - day, May 16, 2001, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
A native of Georgia, she was the daughter of the late Carl James and Addie Oaks White. She was a seamstress and homemaker. She was a gardener and a member of Patterson Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Summie Tessner; two brothers, Bonnie Plato White and Norman John White; and one sister, Ruth Virginia Crow.
She is survived by one daughter and son - in - law, Carolyn T. and "J.D." Smith of Shelby; one brother, Carl White Junior of Shelby; one sister and brother - in - law, Nellie and "W.T." Bowen of Shelby; two grandchildren, Dr. Renee Melton - Smith and her husband, Paul, and Joel David Melton, all of Shelby; and two special friends, Lillie Mae Price and Margaret Ridings.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Patterson Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Waters officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home and at other times at the home of J.D. and Carolyn Smith of 5106 Ridge St. in Shelby.

Thomas Noell
RALEIGH - Mr. Thomas Edward Noell, 71, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001.
He was the son of the late Hugh Ellis and Margaret Henley Noell. He was a veteran of the Air Force, serving in the Strategic Air Command during the Korean Crisis. After his discharge he joined the American Red Cross. During his 32 years of service with the Red Cross, he spent five years in England as a field director on a military base. In 1970, he and his family moved to Raleigh, where he worked as a chapter manager for the Triangle Area Chapter of the Red Cross until he retired in 1989.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Fay Noell; three daughters and sons - in - law, Elizabeth and Paul, Louise and John, and Sarah and Harry; eight grandchildren, Kelly, John, Julia, Seneca, Zachary, Alex, Rachael and Emily; and one brother, Hugh Ellis Noell Jr.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Redeemer Episcopal Church with the Rev. Eugene C. McDowell officiating.
The family received friends Thursday night and also will be at the home, 4912 Yadkin Drive.
Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the North Carolina Center for Public Television.

Ella Mae Farley
LINCOLNTON - Ms. Ella Mae "Pete" Farley, 85, of 1428 Little Valley Lane, Boger City Rest Home, died Friday, May 11, 2001, at Lincoln Medical Center.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Providence Missionary Baptist Church with Elder John Hunt officiating. Burial will follow in the Hollybrook Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday night from 7 to 8 at Indian Creek Primitive Baptist Church and other times at her home, 729 E. Pine St., Lincolnton.

Evelyn Hunsucker
SHELBY - Mrs. Evelyn Ida Sisk Hunsucker, 87, of 1819 Kings Road, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Gaston County, she was the daughter of the late William S. and Viola VanDyke Sisk. She retired from PPG Industries. She was a member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oswald Rufus Hunsucker, and one sister, Alice Sisk.
She is survived by two sons and daughters - in - law, Michael R. and Suzanne McSwain Hunsucker of Fort Mill, S.C., and Timothy I. and Glenda Hunsucker of Charlotte; two sisters, Ruth Canipe of Shelby and Virginia Sisk of Goldsboro; six grandchildren, Julie Hunsucker, Leesa Kane, Shawn Hunsucker, Brooke Potocki, Dusty Hunsucker and Katie Hunsucker; six great - grandchildren, Meagan Kane, Brandi Denton, Shelley Denton, Evelyn Nichole 'Nikki' Kane, Tiffany Hunsucker and John Bruton; and two great - great - grandchildren, Christen Kane and Michael Parrish.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Lafayette Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gervase Hitch officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at 1819 Kings Road in Shelby.

Ronald Hillman
LAWNDALE - Mr. Ronald Junior Hillman, 20, of 3601 Rube Spangler Road, died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, in Lawndale.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Shirley Ann Wilson of Shelby and Ronald Hillman of Grover.
He was preceded in death by his great - grandmother, Pearlie Watkins and great - grandmother, Charlie Lou Hayes.
In addition to his parents, he was survived by his son, Keyez Jefferies of Shelby; two daughters, Jasmine Roseboro of Shelby and Jakia Fuller of Lawndale; his grandparents, Leila Mae Watkins of Lawndale and Braswell and Ella Mae Hillman of Shelby; one sister, Celeste Ann Ruff of Lawndale; a special friend, Ann Pompey; a brother - in - law, Timothy Ruff; relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Community Baptist Church with the Rev. Thurston Jackson officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.

SHELBY - Mrs. Sloan Shoats Hewitt, 90, of 1101 N. Morgan St., died Sunday, May 13, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Costner Funeral Home Chapel in Gastonia. Burial will follow at Gaston Memorial Park in Gastonia.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Doris Roy of 918 W. Cabiness Road, Shelby.

Venus Wilson Sr.
GROVER - Mr. Venus "Cornell" Wilson Sr., 100, of 214 Roy Bell Road, Kings Mountain, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Eskridge Grove Baptist Church in Shelby. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Plato Pressley
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Plato Pressley, 79, of 418 Belvedere Circle, died Thursday May 17, 2001, at Harris Hospice Unit at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born Jan. 25, 1922, the son of the late Minnie Pressley Quinn. He was a member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a Sunday school teacher of the men's class, church treasurer, senior usher president, Baptist Training Union director, secretary of the brotherhood organization, vacation Bible school teacher of the young adult men's class and served on the Deacon board for more than 40 years. He was also assistant leader of the Royal Ambassadors, a Boy Scout master and a member of Massac Masonic Lodge No. 4 in Kings Mountain. He was also a Hospice Volunteer in Cleveland County. He also served in the Army during World War II.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his son, Robert Neil Pressley and his wife, Patricia; and two brothers, Bridell Frazier and Robert Lee Pressley.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Johnsell Moore Pressley of the home; his daughter and son - in - law, Elizabeth J. Pressley and Larry Orr of Charlotte; his son and daughter - in - law, Beauford Plato and Cammie Pressley of Shelby; six grandchildren Keisha Y. Orr - Nashid and her husband, Sheriff, Contina Pressley, Karen Pressley, Sonya Pressley, Nakia Pressley and Felicia Pressley; six great - grandchildren; three sisters and a brother - in - law, Annie M. Pressley, Louise Q. Brodnex and Hattie Q. and William Smith; two sisters - in - law, Eula Frazier and Jane Pressley; one brother, Charles Pressley; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. C.A. Feemester officiating and the Rev. M.L. Littlejohn presiding. Burial will be in Gaston Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.

Mary Lou Palmer
CASAR - Mrs. Mary Lou Richards Palmer, 88, of 5752 Casar Road, died Friday, May 18, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Casar, she was the daughter of the late Augustus Albert and Della Lindsay Richards. She was retired from the School of the Deaf and Broughton Hospital in Morganton, a graduate of Gardner - Webb College and a member of Casar Baptist Church, the Casar Chapter Order of Eastern Star, Home Demonstration Club and Citizen of the Year for 1997.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Clyde Palmer; and daughter, Jannie Palmer.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons - in - law, Danna Palmer of the home, Jennie and Randy Bost of Newton and Mary Ann and Randy Stegall of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Amy Beverly and her husband, Peyton, and J. Taylor Bost, all of Charlotte, and J. Randall Bost of Newton; two great - grandchildren, Mitchell Beverly and Katie Beverly, both of Charlotte; and two sisters, Doshia Hall of Oxford and Gustee Williams of Shelby.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Casar Baptist Church with the Revs. Fred Mauney and Ralph Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Palmer Mortuary.

FOREST CITY - Mrs. Frankie Earley Wheeler, 66, of 1070 U.S. 221 - A, died Thursday, May 17, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen, with the Rev. Eugene Passmore officiating. Burial will be in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen.

Jessie Sanford Jr.
FOREST CITY - Mr. Jessie Tee Sanford Jr., 63, of 735 S. Church St., Apartment 602A, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Monday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Crowe's Funeral Home, Rutherfordton, with the Rev. James Staley officiating.
The family will receive friends an hour before the service at the funeral home.

Ocia Rhoden
SHELBY - Mrs. Ocia Mae Prince Rhoden, 82, of 842 Churchill Drive, died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Hospice at Wendover.
Born in Columbus County, she was a daughter of the late William H. and Docia Wright Prince.
She retired as a sales associate for Belk and was a member of Westwood Heights (formerly Churchill Drive) Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school for many years, was Mission Action Chair of WMU and a Sunbeam leader, and served on the homebound committee and as church financial secretary. Although her recent illness prevented her from participating in church activities, she was an integral part of the successful transition of Churchill Baptist Church to Westwood Heights Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles W. Rhoden; and three brothers, Arthur L. Prince, J. Oliver Prince and Harry H. Prince.
She is survived by three sons and daughters - in - law, Charles W. Jr. and Charlotte Rhoden of Charleston, S.C., Richard P. and Judy Rhoden of Mt. Airy and David Arthur and Vikki Rhoden of Charlotte; a daughter and son - in - law, Kathy Rhoden and James Lamb of Newton; a sister, Alice Prince Harrelson of Whiteville; six grandchildren, Jonathan Rhoden, Allison Rhoden, Will Rhoden, William Rhoden, Jordan Rhoden and Elizabeth Lamb.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Westwood Heights Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jimmy Black and Dr. Paul Sorrells officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be at Cleveland Memorial Park.

FOREST CITY - Mrs. Geneva Irene Lewis Hensley, 64, of 218 Pine St., died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Crowe's Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Ronnie Robbins officiating. Burial will be in New Hope United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Hugh Street
SHELBY - Mr. Hugh Will Street, 63, of 2245 Emerald Mine Road, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at his home.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of the late Benjamin Hugh and Lillie Smith Street. He worked as a fixer at Doran Mills and was member of Gantt's Grove Baptist Church. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved dogs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Joseph Street, L.B. Street, John Street and David Street; and two daughters, Crystal Street and Kimberly Street.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Truelove Street of the home; a son, Tony Street, and his fiancée, Mandy, of the home; a brother and sister - in - law, Leonard and Diane Street of Mooresboro; and two sisters and brothers - in - law, Velma and Carl Goode of Mooresboro and Martha and Carl Bailey of Shelby.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home, with Dr. Gene Ware officiating.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour before the service.

Ruth Carson
CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Ruth Louise Patterson Carson, 82, of 602 S. Mountain St., died Friday, May 18, 2001, at her home.
A native of Cherryville, she was a daughter of the late John and Esther Young Patterson. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, where she served in the Missionary Department and on the kitchen committee. She was also a member of the Yuletide Club. She worked about 20 years each for the Rudisill and Houser families.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Isaiah Carson, and three sisters, Pauline Harris, Naomi Patterson and Mary Lee Patterson.
She is survived by a son, Bill C. Carson of Baltimore; two brothers, John W. Patterson Jr. of Cherryville and James E. Patterson Sr. of Shelby; a sister, Ann Moreland of Baltimore; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 3 p.m. at Fairview Baptist Church, with Dr. S.A. Raper and the Rev. David Lindsey officiating. Burial will be in Cherryville City Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service.

FOREST CITY - Mrs. Auline Hemphill Gray, 95, of Arlington Street, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at White Oak Manor, where she was a resident.
The funeral will be Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Hobson officiating. Burial will be in Cool Springs Cemetery.
The family will receive friends in the church parlor one hour before the service.

Robert Hamrick
SHELBY - Mr. Robert Benjamin Hamrick, 70, of 421 E. College Ave., died Sunday, May 20, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Ryburn M. and Lorene Short Hamrick. He retired from Greenville Turf and Tractor in Greenville, S.C., and Revels Turf and Tractor in Fuquay - Varina, where he was the golf and turf sales manager. He was formerly employed by Porter Brothers in Shelby. He was a partner of Cleveland Funeral Services. He graduated from Shelby High School, Gardner - Webb College and Wofford College, and he attended Howard's Business College.
He was a life member of Lafayette Street United Methodist Church where he was a member of BYKOTA Class. He also served as past chairperson for the Administrative Board and the Finance, Staff - Parish Relations and Building committees and served on other committees in the church.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 744 and Piedmont Shrine Club, Scottish Rites and Oasis Temple.
He received the Lifetime Membership award of the Upstate Turfgrass Association. He was a founding member of the Western N.C. Turfgrass Association, where he also received the Lifetime Membership award. He received the Distinguished Service award from the Carolinas Gold Course Superintendents Association and Turfgrass Council of N.C. He also received the Eagles Award from the Turfgrass Council of N.C. He was a member of the North - South Turfgrass Association.
He was past advisory board member of the Catawba Valley Community College in the turf program. He was a member of the Turfgrass Advisory Board of Horry - Georgetown Technical Institute at Myrtle Beach, S.C.
He was on the advisory board of Gardner - Webb University.
He was the charter member of the Cleveland Horseman's Association. He was former board member of the South Carolina - North Carolina High School Rodeo Association.
He served two terms on the Boiling Springs City Council and was a past chairperson of the Planning and Zoning Board.
He was a past coach of the Pony League baseball team and a past president of Cleveland County Schools PTA.
He was a veteran of the Army during the Korean conflict.
He is survived by his wife, Patsy Crosby Hamrick of the home; two sons and two daughters - in - law, Benjamin C. and Jodie Hamrick and Robert C. and Becky Hamrick, all of Asheville; one daughter and son - in - law, Allyson Hamrick and Rick Howell of Boiling Springs; one sister and one brother - in - law, Harriet Hamrick and Glenn Williams of Boiling Springs; two granddaughters, Calli Hamrick and Lindsey Hamrick, both of Asheville; and four grandsons, Coleman Hamrick and Zachary Hamrick, both of Asheville, and James Howell and Spencer Howell, both of Boiling Springs.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Lafayette Street United Methodist Church with the Revs. Gervase Hitch, Jim McKinney and Bill Pheagin. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.
