William Carson
FOREST CITY - Mr. William Gwynn Carson, 66, of 172 Hamilton St., died Friday, May 25, 2001, at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Wells Springs United Methodist Church in Forest City, with the Rev. Alvin Brown officiating. The body will be placed in the church two hours before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church from 2:30 to 2:55 p.m.
Thompson Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Malachi
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Thomas Malachi, 51, of 607 S. Mountain St., died Friday, May 25, 2001, at Oteen Veterans Administra - tion Hospital in Asheville.
A native of Fort Benning, Ga., he was a son of Lorean Schenck Bridges of Kings Mountain and the late Edward Malachi. He was a member of
Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church and was formerly employed with Cherryville Distributing Co. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Elizabeth Malachi.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by a son and daughter - in - law, Thomas Lamonte and Serlina Malachi of Kings Mountain; three brothers, Robert Eugene Bridges Jr. and Michael Bridges, both of Kings Mountain and Mitchell Bridges of Cherryville; three sisters and a brother - in - law, Shannon Malachi and Susan Withrow, both of Shelby and Carol and Harold Gill of Fayetteville; five grandchildren, Winashia Bell, Baron Smarr and Shereka Smarr of Kings Mountain, and Dasmine Burris and Kaline Thurman of Shelby; and many other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, with Dr. J.E. Montgomery officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the service. At other times, they will be at the home of his son, 1802 Alpine Drive, Kings Mountain.

Louise Short
SHELBY - Mrs. Louise Austell Short, 83, died Friday, May 25, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
She was born May 11, 1918, in Charlotte, the daughter of the late Claude Love Sr. and Susan Elizabeth Borders Austell. She was a graduate of Shelby High School and attended Asheville Normal Teacher's College. She worked as a secretary at J.P. Stevens. She and her late husband, L.W. "Speed" Short, established Short's Boat and Motor Service, which became Shoco. She worked there as secretary and treasurer until her death. She also served as a member of the advisory board of the Hawaiian Baptist Academy in Honolulu, Hawaii, for 20 years. She served as president of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 82, in Shelby. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution and the Gardner - Webb University Bulldog Club, where she was 1982 member of the year. She was a member of the Cleveland Country Club, where she served on the board of trustees, and the North Carolina Historical Society. She was the founding secretary of the Shelby Swim Club from 1956 to 1965, a president of the Junior Charity League, the Shelby Junior Women's Club and a member of the Thursday Afternoon, Second Tuesday and Wednesday luncheon bridge clubs. For the past 73 years she was a member of First Baptist Church in Shelby, where she was the secretary, president of the Love Sunday school class and a choir member.
In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Austell Crowder; three brothers, Max B. Austell, Claude Love Austell Jr. and James Everett Austell Sr.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter - in - law, Dale Albert and Angie Short of Shelby and Jerry Allen Short of Yorktown, Va.; one sister, Dorothy Bell Austell of Raleigh; six grandchildren, Adam Short of Carboro, Stuart Short, Justin Short and Sally Short, all of Shelby, and Taylor Short and Gary Short, both of Norfolk, Va.; one great - grandson, Samuel Short of Norfolk; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Shelby with the Rev. Gene Watterson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 5 to 8 at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Joseph B. Freeman Scholarship Fund at Gardner - Webb University or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Earle McDowell
CLINTON, S.C. - Mr. Earle C. McDowell, 53, of Whilten Center, died Thursday, May 24, 2001, in Clinton.
A native of Spartanburg, S.C., he was the son of the late L. Earle and Estelle Crouch McDowell. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church of Spartanburg.
He is survived by his brother and sister - in - law, the Rev. Eugene C. and Catherine McDowell of Shelby; and a niece, Becca McDowell of Cullowhee.
A graveside service will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Eugene C. McDowell officiating.
The family will be at the home of his brother, 315 S. Poston St., Shelby.
Memorials may be made to Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, 510 W. Sumter St., Shelby, NC 28151.

Ruth Beard
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Ruth Lancaster Beard, 83, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. at Haynes Memorial Baptist Church with the Rev. Jerry Hames and laymen Jerry Condrey and Don Jenkins officiating. The burial will be in Trinity Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen.

Phyllis Price - Wiener
RICHLANDS - Mrs. Phyllis Earls Price - Wiener, 53, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at her residence.
She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Minnie and Garmen Barnes of Mooresboro and was the daughter of the late Theodore Earls and Minnie. She graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and was a founder of the United States Marine Corps Key Wives Program.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a sister, Tamera Earls.
She is survived by her husband, Thaddus Wiener of the home; two daughters, Stephanie Cain of Ayden and Kim Richardson of Swansboro; eight grandchildren, Joseph Hardison, Crystal Guinn and Shane Richardson, all of Swansboro, Penny Richardson of Ohio, Sullivan Cain of Ayden and Sean Wiener, Corine Hargett and Tanner Hargett; and a stepdaughter and stepson - in - law, Patricia and Woody Hargett of Stella.
A memorial service will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Infant of Prague Catholic Church.
Memorials may be made to the Onslow County Ministries Soup Kitchen.

Dr. John Smith
TOLEDO, Ohio - Dr. John Rodgers "Jon" Smith, 84, died Thursday, May 24, 2001.
Born in Tuskegee Institute, Ala., Smith was reared in Springfield, Ohio, where he attended grade and high schools. He returned to Alabama for college and graduated with honors in chemistry from Tuskegee Institute in 1937. Later he began his medical training at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn., and earned his doctoral degree in 1944.
Dr. Smith began his career as a physician in Shelby. He also practiced in Richmond, Ind., before moving to Toledo. He had been a practicing physician in Toledo since 1966. His career spanned 47 years and he retired in 1992. He gave much of his time and talent to Cordelia Martin Health Center, where he served as medical director for many years.
During his life in Toledo, Smith was an active member of Third Baptist Church and Alpha Pi Psi Boule. He belonged to Omega Phi Psi Fraternity and served as the organization's long - term treasurer. He served on many local boards and committees, including the Advisory Board for Third Baptist Church, Lyman Liggins Senior Center and The Tennyson Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, the Rev. Woodford S. and Josie Smith, and a son, Dr. Jon A. Rashid of New York.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Greer Smith; a son, Dr. Craig S. Smith of Plymouth, Mich.; a daughter, Carol G. Smith of Stone Mountain, Ga.; a sister and brother - in - law, Woodia and Edward Pryce of Tuskegee Institute; six grandchildren, two great - grandchildren, two nephews, three nieces and a host of other family and close friends.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Third Baptist Church, with Dr. Langston C. Bannister officiating. Burial will be in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at Dale Funeral Home Tuesday from 4 to 5 p.m., followed by a wake service from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Dale Chapel.
Instead of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to the Third Baptist Church Scholarship Fund or to the Jon A. Rashid Memorial.

Annie Mae Williams
ELLENBORO - Mrs. Annie Mae Shoemake Williams, 95, died Saturday, May 26, 2001, at Crawley Memorial Hospital in Boiling Springs.
A native of Hall County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Sam E. and Sally Terry Shoemake. She was a homemaker and a member of Campfield Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Odum Woodrow Williams.
She is survived by two sons, D.S. Williams of Tampa, Fla., and Max Williams of Shelby; five daughters, Frances Connor of Tampa, Gwen Callahan of Boiling Springs, Blanche Blanton of Ellenboro, Dianne Bostic of Bostic and Vicki Humphries of Rutherford College; a brother, Ed Shoemake of Gainesville, Ga.; two sisters, Mamie Haynes and Nola Blankenship, both of Gainesville; 23 grandchildren, 29 great - grandchildren, five great - great - grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Campfield Memorial Baptist Church in Ellenboro, with the Revs. Eugene Passmore and Joe Cantrell officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Harrelson Funeral Home in Caroleen, and at other times at the home of a daughter, Blanche Blanton, 153 Owens St., Ellenboro.

Paul Robbs
WACO - Mr. Paul Robbs, 77, of Waco, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, he was the son of the late Ula and Flossie Robbs. He was a veteran of World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, C.J. Robbs and Roy Robbs, and one daughter, Mary Lee Robbs.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mildred W. Robbs; four daughters and two sons - in - law, Carrie and Letcher Brown Sr., Margaret and John Washington and Evlena R. Adams, all of Waco, and L. Annette Robbs of Greensboro; six sons and five daughters - in - law, Dennis and Phyllis Robbs of Forest City, Jerry and Anita Robbs of Hickory, Johnny Ray and Carolyn Robbs of Waco, Donald Robbs, Larry and Dora Robbs and Rodney Sr. and Sharry Robbs, all of Shelby; one sister, Alice Wilson of Kings Mountain; two brothers and sisters - in - law, Silas and Phonice Robbs of Waco and Joe and Betty Robbs of Kings Mountain; 21 grandchildren and two grandsons raised in the home, Glennwood Robbs and Frank Robbs; 12 great - grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, with the Dr. James E. Montgomery Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the church and at other times the family will be at 306 Stroupe Road in Waco.

LINCOLNTON - Mr. Stephen Wayne Peace, 59, of 201 West Church St., died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
A memorial service will be held Friday at noon in the Warlick Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Keith Navey officiating.
The family will receive friends Thursday night from 6:30 to 8 at the funeral home.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Eloise Early Baity, 89, of 915 Brookwood Drive, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Hospice at Wendover.

VALE - Mrs. Sharon Bost Davis, 49, of 6571 Sandburg Trail, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

Hattie Cabe
GASTONIA - Mrs. Hattie Mae Jones Hamrick Cabe, 87, of 2065 Lyon Street, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at Belaire Healthcare Center.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Leroy Hampton and Leona Missouri Rodgers Jones. Before her death, she lived at Gaston Place Assisted Living Center. She worked for Carothers Funeral Home and Gaston Memorial Hospital for many years. She was a member of Parkwood Baptist Church in Gastonia.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Orus Woodrow Hamrick and Wayne S. Cabe; three sisters and seven brothers.
She is survived by one daughter and son - in - law, Sarah "Sally" and David Britton of Gastonia; one son and daughter - in - law, Donald and Eleanor Hamrick of Gastonia; one sister, Willie Webber of Boiling Springs; four grandchildren, Gregory Hamrick, Leslie Adams and her husband, Bobby, Laurie Dickerson and her husband, Carroll, and Julie McKinney and her husband, Johnny, all of Gastonia; and four great - grandchildren, Ryan Hamrick, Ross Adams, Sarah Adams and Lauren Adams.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Parkwood Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jeff Long and Dr. M.O. Owens officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.

Rosie Burris
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Rosie Bell Ratchford Burris died Sunday, May 27, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in York, S.C., she was the daughter of the late William and Noriah Ratchford.
She joined the church at an early age and became a faithful member of Langrum Branch Baptist Church in York, where she was "Mother of the Church," a member of the Vocal Choir, Missionary Society, the Burial Aid Society and the Community Prayer Band.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, James Edward Burris; two daughters, Mattie Lee Burris and Nellie Rose Burris Crockett; two sons, Luther "Luke" Clinton and James William Burris.
She is survived by seven daughters and five sons - in - law, Isabell and Fred Watson, Ella and Nelious Kee, Gladys and Paul Webber, Pearl and Furman Wilson, Jessie and Joseph Ross, Josie Burris Walker and Ida Burris Sanders; a son and daughter - in - law, Lonnie and Gladys Burris; a daughter - in - law, Gloria Parker Burris; a son - in - law, Lee Crockett; 43 grandchildren; 121 great - grandchildren; 45 great - great - grandchildren; a special friend, Inez Mobley; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Langrum Branch Baptist Church, with Dr. Osbey Roddey officiating.

FOREST CITY - Mr. James Henry Godfrey Jr., 74, of 658 Cherry Mountain St., died Monday, May 28, 2001, at his home.
A graveside service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, with the Rev. Frances Bridges officiating.
There will be no formal visitation. Those who wish to pay respects to Mr. Godfrey may call at Padgett and King Mortuary Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Irene Porter
SHELBY - Mrs. Irene Porter, 70, of 1551 Hilltop Drive, died Monday, May 28, 2001, at Crawley Memorial Hospital in Boiling Springs.
A native of Loris, S.C., she was the daughter of the late T.M. and Dalma Duncan Lewis. She retired from Doran Mill and was a member of Wallace Grove Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, J.S. Lewis and T.D. Lewis.
She is survived by three daughters and sons - in - law, Wilma and Wray Spurling and Alisa and Chuck Rinehart, all of Shelby, and Sandra and Roger Self of Plant City, Fla.; one son, Dale Porter of Shelby; two sisters, Shelby Porter of Hickory and Earlene Gasque of Nichols, S.C.; three brothers, Bonnie Lewis of Pensacola, Fla., Donnie Lewis of Nichols and Jimmy Lewis of Shelby; seven grandchildren, Keena Spurling, Eric Spurling, Devan Sisk and Brian Rinehart, all of Shelby, Chad Rinehart of Chapel Hill, and Zachary Self and Logan Self, both of Plant City; and one great - grandchild, Elijah Spurling.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Wallace Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mac Hyder officiating. Burial will follow in Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

'J.L.' Carroll
LAWNDALE - Mr. James Lee "J.L." Carroll, 78, of 209 Hicks Hill Road, died Wednesday, May 30, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Lincoln County, he was born Oct. 8, 1922, the son of the late William Edgar and Maude Pearl Conner Carroll. He retired from Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock Co. as a construction supervisor. He was a member of Palm Tree United Methodist Church and Lawndale Lions Club. He was a member of the Blue Lodge No. 336 of Newport News, 32 Degree Mason - Oasis Temple of Charlotte, Sunset Sunday School Class and Palm Tree United Methodist Men. He was a Navy veteran of World War II in the Pacific Theater. He served on the USS New Mexico in the Battle of the Philippines and Tokyo Bay.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, W.E. Carroll.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Martha Helen Grigg Carroll of Lawndale; three brothers, Roy C. Carroll of Biloxi, Miss., Billy E. Carroll of Lexington, Ky., and Jimmy Carroll of Lawndale; and two sisters, Margaret C. Morton of Charlotte and Jo Ann C. Harmon of Kings Mountain.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Palm Tree United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jim Scott officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Stamey Funeral Home.

LINCOLNTON - Mr. Dennis Edward Izard, 35, of 202 N. Flint St., died Saturday, May 26, 2001.
