CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Faye Stewart Rogers Homesley, 65, of 408 E. First St., died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the chapel at Cherryville Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Greene officiating. Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mary Secrest
SHELBY - Mrs. Mary Crockett Secrest, 81, of 1524 Rhyne St., formerly of Springfield, Mo., died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at her residence.
A native of Polk County, Mo., she was born on Nov. 25, 1917, the daughter of the late John Andrew and Nettie Prater Crockett. She was employed by Champion International where she worked as a time keeper. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church in Kings Mountain.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Secrest; one brother, Frank Crockett; and two sisters, Marie Crockett and Ruth Crockett.
She is survived by one son, John Andrew Secrest of Waukegan, Ill.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marty and Mark Mellentine of Shelby and Mary Lois and Dave Chapin of Kings Mountain; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Kay Crockett of Springfield, Mo.; and 15 grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the chapel at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with Pastors Jim Ogle and Larry Brubaker and Dr. Charles Surrett officiating. A graveside service will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at Pleasant Hope Cemetery in Polk County, Mo., with the Pastor Jim Robbins officiating.
The family will receive friends Thursday one hour before the service at the funeral home, Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m. at Greenlawn Funeral Home in Springfield before the graveside service, and other times at the residence.
Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 602 Canterbury Road, Kings Mountain, N.C. 28086.

Raleigh Martin
MOORESBORO - Mr. Raleigh N. Martin, 81, of 532 Sandy Run Church Rd., died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., he was the son of the late James Aker and Ofa Taylor Martin. He retired in 1982 from Duke Power after 35 years of service. He was a member of Cherokee Creek Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was an usher for 30 years. He was a member of the Cleveland County Golf Association for 15 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruby Phillips Martin; four brothers, Robert Lee Martin, Joe Martin, Ralph Martin and R.B. Martin; and eight sisters, Margaret Ophelia Ruppe, Nezzie Rachel Hammett, Cenie Wood, Lennie Hammett, Vada Wood, Mitt Botier, Macie Linder and Flora Mae Scruggs.
He is survived by his wife, Bertie B. Martin of the home; one son, Jerry E. Martin of Mooresboro; one daughter, Gloria M. Burnett of Edgefield, S.C.; one stepson, Johnny Lovelace Jr. of Rutherfordton; one stepdaughter, Jane L. Price of Cliffside; three brothers, Williard Martin of Gaffney, S.C., K.D. Martin of Belmont and Henry Martin of Crouse; four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Cherokee Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Mike Fraizer and Clifford Bradshaw officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Cleveland Funeral Services and other times at the residence.

Cora "Venia" Gantt
MORGANTON - Mrs. Cora "Venia" Rhyne Gantt, 82, of 4050 Old Highway 18, Willis Apt., formerly of Cherryville, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at Grace Heights in Morganton.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Keith Love officiating. Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Carpenter's Funeral Home and other times at the home of the son, Joe Billy Gantt, 2225 Brown Road, Cherryville.

HICKORY - Mr. Francis Hugh Pless, 88, of Third St., S.E., died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at his residence.
The funeral will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Christ Lutheran Church with the Revs. Richard Schwandt and David Ludwig officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Hickory Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

Dwight Bess
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Dwight Earl Bess, 82, of 6164 Flay Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Bess Chapel United Methodist Church in Cherryville with the Rev. John Stein officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Carpenter's Funeral Home.

Aquila "Quil" Jones
ELLENBORO - Mr. Aquila James "Quil" Jones, 91, of 1740 Tiney Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Padgett and King Mortuary with the Rev. Ad Hopper officiating. A graveside service with military rites will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Salisbury National Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday after the service.

Frank Ellis
SHELBY - Mr. Columbus Frank Ellis, 86, of New Prospect Church Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Century Care in Shelby.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born on Aug. 2, 1913, the son of the late Johnie Gaither and Mary Jane Guyton Ellis. He retired from Dover Textiles after 47 years of service. He was a member of Northside Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother; three half-brothers; and one half-sister.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Vertie Greene Ellis; one daughter and son-in-law, Berniece and Buren Humphries Jr. of Shelby; one sister, Lula McGinnis of Shelby; one grandson and his wife, Rick and Lisa Humphries of Shelby; and two great-granddaughters, Kelly Humphries and Samantha Humphries.
A graveside service will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Rose Hill Memorial Park with the Revs. Stanley Webb and Neal Efird officiating.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 1:30 to 2:30 at Stamey Funeral Home before the service.

ELLENBORO - Mrs. Sarah Margaret Ledford Brooks, 71, of 807 Pinehurst Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 1999, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Corinth Baptist Church with the Rev. Ad Hopper officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.

Shacara Johnson
SHELBY - Shacara Makala Johnson, infant daughter of Shacona Black and Stacy Johnson, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her twin sister, Tacara Makeyla Johnson; maternal grandparents, Melvin and Annette Warren of Shelby; paternal grandparents, Gregory Glenn and Edna Johnson of Shelby; and great-grandmother, Lena Mae Glenn of Shelby.
The funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with the Rev. James Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends Thursday 30 minutes before the service at the church and other times at the mother's home, 1115 N. Washington St., Shelby.
Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Austell Bailey
SHELBY - Mr. Austell Bailey, 74, of 1322 Sander's Road, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, at Mission Memorial Hospital.
A native of Gainesville, Ga., he was the son of the late Bill and Monia Lipscomb Bailey. He was a self-employed farmer for 40 years. He had been retired for 15 years. He was a member of Saint Matthews Holiness Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Curley Lott Bailey.
He is survived by three sons, Willie O. Bailey of Gainsville, Ga., Johnny H. Bailey and Steve H. Bailey, both of Shelby; three daughters, Dorothy M. Bailey, Jo Ann Bailey and Virginia B. Littlejohn, all of Shelby; one brother, James Bailey of Flowerbranch, Ga.; two sisters, Nuelle Boyce of Shelby and Josie "Marcelle" King of Baltimore, Md.; a friend, Millette "Goob" Campbell; 21 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Saint Matthews Holiness Church with the Rev. Thomas McCluney officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends Thursday 30 minutes before the service at the church.
Dockery's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mallie Hamrick
SHELBY - Mrs. Mallie Helen Wallace Hamrick, 83, of 859 Poplar Springs Road, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late John Brown and Kate Avalona Pruitt Wallace. She was a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Brossie Flay Hamrick.
She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Dennis H. and Gene Ritz of Gaithersburg, Md. and Lynda H. Helms of Shelby; four granddaughters, Holli Helms of Hermosa Beach, Calif., Betsy Bruning of Germantown, Md., Kristy Ritz of Wilmington, Del., and Susie Ritz of Columbus, Ohio; one grandson, Jason Helms of Charlotte; one great-grandson, Benjamin Bruning of Germantown; and one great-granddaughter, Rachel Bruning of Germantown.
The funeral will be Friday at 7 p.m. at Poplar Springs Baptist Church with Dr. Jim Richardson and the Revs. Clyde Buckner and Dan Wallace officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow Saturday at 10 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Cleveland Funeral Service and other times at the residence.

Paul Gibson
MOORESVILLE - Mr. Paul S. Gibson, 87, of 339 W. Lowrance Ave., died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Huntersville Oaks Nursing Home.
A graveside service will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Glenwood Memorial Park with the Rev. David Christy officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at Neill Funeral Home in Mooresville.

William Chappell Jr.
SHELBY - Mr. William Harlan Chappell Jr., 57, of 121 Flint Hill Church Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at his residence.
A native of Charlotte, he was the son of William Harlan Sr. and Ruth Kathleen Pope Chappell of Charlotte. He was a truck driver for Hersek Express. He attended Royster Avenue Church of God in Shelby. He was a Navy veteran who served in Vietnam.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Paulette Reavis Chappell of the home; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Tony Chappell of the home and Jamey and Tricia Shirah of Concord; two daughters and sons-in-law, Renee and John Sensing of Charlotte and Nikki and Joey Mergott of the home; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby and Jane Chappell and Gary and Rickie Chappell, all of Charlotte; and eight grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at the chapel at Cleveland Funeral Services with the Revs. Rick Brackette and Phillip Robinson officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Johnny Rich
CASAR - Mr. Johnny Columbus Rich, 61, of 531 Saint Paul Church Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born on Mar. 25, 1938, the son of the late Carles D. and Artie Cook Rich. He was a machinist and a farmer. He was a member of Saint Paul Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Earl Rich, and one sister, Laura Rich.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Diane Hawkins Rich of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Keith and Rachel Rich and Paul Rich, all of Casar, and David and Diane Rich of Boiling Springs; three daughters and one son-in-law, Karen and Rick Hudson of Casar, and Ellen Rich and Jean Rich, both of the home; three sisters, Wilma Neal of Hickory, Charlotte Felder of Sumter, S.C., and Gail Sudduth of Asheboro; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Saint Paul Baptist Church with the Rev. Ernest Speagle officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Willie Mae Degree
SHELBY - Mrs. Willie Mae Degree, 49, of 113 Steeple St., died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
She was born on Oct. 14, 1949, the daughter of the late Tommy Lee and Beatrice Benton Shade. She was a housewife.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Qunn Degree, and two brothers, June Shade and Floyd Shade.
She is survived by one daughter, Minister Laura Shade of Shelby; two grandchildren, Brittney Chapman and Jonathan Chapman; seven sisters, Jessie Eskridge, Seal McClain, Jean Bess, Judy Bess, Lena Roberts and Angie Labon, all of Shelby, and Rose Shade of Youngstown, Ohio; four brothers, Haywood Shade and Paul Dawkins, both of Shelby, Robert Shade of Philadelphia and John Shade of Youngstown, Ohio; her mother-in-law, Jessie Degree of Kings Mountain; friends, Henry Petty and Leroy Duncan, both of Shelby; and many relatives and friends.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Faith Harvest Baptist Church, 1001 Buffalo St., Shelby with Bishop Randy Borders officiating. The body may be viewed until 8 p.m. tonight at Genesis Funeral Service and Chapel. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends Friday 30 minutes before the service at the church and other times at the home of her daughter, 838 N. Morgan St., Shelby.
Tott D. Griffin at Genesis Funeral Services and Chapel, 413 Weather St., Shelby is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Lee Bridges
SHELBY - Mrs. Dorothy Lee Bridges, 73, of 1632 Caleb Road, died Friday, Oct. 8, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Cleveland County, she was a daughter of the late Perry Champion and Sara Hensley. She was a homemaker and a member of Morning Star Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ensley Bridges; her first husband, Charlie Ivey; and a grandchild, Anita Camp.
Surviving are a son, James Ivey of Shelby; two daughters, Becky Buchanan and Carolyn Camp, both of Shelby; three grandchildren, Wendy Ivey, Dwayne Camp and Laura Newton; and a great-grandchild, Jada Lashay Bell.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Double Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home; and at other times, at the home of James Ivey, 2560 S. Post Road in Shelby.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 394, Shelby, N.C. 28151-0394.

Jackson 'Jack' Bess
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Jackson Wayne "Jack" Bess, 77, of 205 W. Church St., died Saturday, Oct. 9, 1999, at Gaston Memorial Hospital, Gastonia.
Born in Lincoln County, he was a son of the late Peter Jackson and Hattie Ethel Tillman Bess. He was the former owner of Bess Electric in Cherryville, retiring after 50 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cherryville, where he was a member of the Mens Bible Class. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Carpenter Mauney Bess; and a brother, Dwight Bess.
Surviving are two stepsons, Dick Mauney of Cherryville and Mickey Mauney of Virginia; a brother, Hal Bess of Fort Myers, Fla.; three sisters, Helen Froneberger and Frances Young, both of Cherryville, and Betty Wright of Houston; four stepgrandchildren; and a special great-grandchild, Tracy McFadden.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jack Cooke officiating. Burial will follow in Bess Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at Carpenter's Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Bess Chapel United Methodist Church, Chimes Fund, 6073 Flay Road, Cherryville, N.C. 28021.
