Wayne Brittain
LAWNDALE - Mr. Charles Wayne Brittain, 50, of 907 E. Stagecoach Trail, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at Vencor Hospital in Greensboro.
A native of Lincoln County, he was born on Aug. 6, 1949, the son of the late Cam Pierson and Lennie Mae Hill Brittain. He was retired from Copeland where he worked as a machinist. He was a Baptist and a U.S. Army veteran.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two half sisters, Mabel Wellmon and Ila Martin; and one half brother, Hartsell Brittain.
He is survived by one daughter, Melissa Lawrence of Lawndale; one brother, C.P. "Buddy" Brittain of Sebring, Fla.; one sister, Ruby Thomas of Lawndale; and one grandson, Jordan Lawrence.
A graveside service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Rose Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Bruce Rabon officiating.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stamey Funeral Home.

Harold "Buddy" Starr Jr.
VALE - Mr. Harold C. "Buddy" Starr Jr., 34, of 7146 Highway 27 West, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, in Hickory.
A memorial service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home with the Rev. Dean Hart officiating.

Ernest Guinn
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Ernest Howard Guinn, 76, of 199 Gold Mine School Road, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 1999, at White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain.
He was born on Dec. 15, 1922, the son of the late Smith and Eliza Adams Guinn. He was a veteran of World War II. He retired from Fredrickson Trucking Company and Grover Elementary School. He was a faithful member of Ebenezer Baptist Church where he was a member of the senior choir, men's choir and a Sunday school class. He was the church custodian until his declining health prevented him from attending.
He is survived by his wife, Sadie Reid Guinn of the home; six step daughters and three sons-in-law, Margaret Odems of Newark, N.J., Evangelist Betty Jenkins of Kings Mountain, Annabelle Hopper of Gaffney, S.C., Judy and Nathan White of Bessemer City, and Elizabeth and Jerry Miller and Minister Shirley and Ray Bryson, all of Kings Mountain; three step sons and one daughter-in-law, Sammie and Shelly Parker and Buford Reid, all of Kings Mountain, and Thomas Reid of Newark, N.J.; two sisters, Lily Mae Odums and Louise Moore, both of Kings Mountain; three brothers, John Robert Guinn, Roy Guinn and Frank Guinn, all of Kings Mountain; 24 step grandchildren; many step great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Kings Mountain. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday one hour before the service at the church.

Paul Henson
SHELBY - Mr. Paul Henson, 68, of 3978 Barclay Road, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.

Marjorie Costner
SHELBY - Mrs. Marjorie Brackett Costner of 517 Leander St., died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at her residence.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

Fred Hamrick
SHELBY — Mr. Fred Monroe Hamrick, 78, of 852 Springmont Drive, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at White Oak Manor.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born on July 11, 1921, the son of the late Deck and Lillie Hamrick. He was a retired painter.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Huffman Hamrick; one son, Bobby Hamrick; and one grandson, Jason Hamrick.
He is survived by seven sons and daughters-in-law, Joe and Betty Hamrick of Cherryville, Loyd and Candy Hamrick, Boyd and Carolyn Hamrick, Ronnie and Barbara Hamrick and Reggie and Robin Hamrick, all of Shelby, John Ray and Christine Hamrick of Belwood and Scott and Sheila Hamrick of Lawndale; two daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara and James Camp of Shelby and Evelyn Mellon of Shelby; one sister, Ethel McGinnis of Kings Mountain; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was Saturday at noon at the chapel at Stamey Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Canipe officiating. Burial followed Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family received friends Saturday one hour before the service at the funeral home.

John “Gus” Palmer
AVONDALE — Mr. John “Gus” Palmer, died on Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
The funeral was Saturday at 3 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church in Henrietta with Dr. L.W. Jackson officiating. Burial followed at the church cemetery.
The family received friends one hour before the service at the church.
Thompson Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William Oates
SHELBY — Mr. William Franklin “Boney” Oates, 55, of 1113 Buffalo St., died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Born in Iredell County, he was a son of Ray Leonard Oates Sr. and the late Ethel Juanita Moses Oates. He was a retired construction worker.
In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann Pruitt Oates.
Surviving are three sons, William Eric Oates of Florida, David Adam Oates of Greensboro and Lucky Stewart Rumfelt of Lincolnton; three daughters, Nina Oates Vincent, Kimberly Oates Willis and Ruby Elizabeth Oates, all of Cherryville; three brothers, Leonard Oates Jr. of Shelby, Ricky Oates and Bobby Oates of Waco; three sisters, Mary Hallman of Holden Beach, Vickie Jean Page of Georgetown, S.C. and Louise Burns of Fallston; a stepson, David Lee Bush of Blacksburg, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Cherryville City Cemetery, with the Rev. Royce Ballew officiating.
The family received friends at the home of Mr. Oates’ brother, Bobby Oates, 348 Deviney Road in Waco, from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, N.C. 28150.
Clay-Barnette Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marjorie Costner
SHELBY — Mrs. Marjorie Brackett Costner, 70, of 517 Leander St., died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at her home.
Born in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Andrew Earnest and Lucy Sain Brackett. She was a homemaker and a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Travis Brackett.
Surviving are her husband, William Herman Costner of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby Dean and Charlene Bridges of Gastonia; a daughter, Stephannie Jane Costner of Shelby; a sister, Ilese Cornwell of Charlotte; and a grandson in the U.S. Army, Andrew William Bridges of Fort Gordon, Ga.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, with Dr. Dolores Queen and the Revs. Eddie Brackett and Jim Brackett officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park.
The family received friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times, at the home.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Cleveland County, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, N.C. 28150.

Paul Henson
BOILING SPRINGS — Mr. Paul Junior Henson, 68, of 3978 Barclay Road, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born in Gaffney, S.C., he was a son of the late Harrison I. and Myrtle Pruitt Henson. He was a retired sawmill worker.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Bailey Henson of the home; two sons, Joe Dean Henson of Shelby and Mike Henson of Boiling Springs; five daughters, Barbara Spencer and Penny Dover, both of Gaffney, Kathy Stone of Shelby, Patsy Henson and Lisa Henson, both of the home; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Goode’s Grove Baptist Church, with the Revs. L.W. Toney and Steve Acres officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The body was at the home Saturday and the family will received friends Saturday evening.
McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James Kirby
MOORESBORO — Mr. James Edward Kirby, 77, of 809 Old Highway 221-A, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Revs. Darrell Revels and Boyd Lattimore officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family received friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.

Tommy Watkins
LAWNDALE — Mr. Tommy Lee Watkins, 41, of 3601 Rube Spangler Road, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of Nelson and Lelia Mae Watkins. He was a member of Community Baptist Church. He was a former employee of Impact Furniture in Hickory.
He was preceded in death by a son, Travis Watkins; and a brother, Ricky Watkins.
Surviving in addition to his parents are a daughter, Keshia Watkins; three brothers, Bobby Joe Watkins and Eugene Watkins, both of Shelby, and Frankie Lee Watkins of Lawndale; and three sisters, Patsy Ann Watkins, Diane Watkins and Shirley Ann Watkins, all of Shelby.
The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. today at Community Baptist Church, with the Rev. Thurston Jackson officiating.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.
Enloe Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Frances Allen
HICKORY — Miss Frances Allen, 83, of 719 Ninth St. N.W., died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at Catawba Memorial Hospital.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Bill Troutman officiating.
A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Hickory on Tuesday at a time to be announced later.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. today at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home in Cliffside.

Rodney Black
LINCOLNTON — Mr. Rodney Darrell Black, 27, of 1548 Long Shoals Road, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Love Valley Baptist Church in Kings Mountain, with the Rev. Barry Philbeck officiating. Burial will follow in Christian Freedom Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Harris Funeral Home.

Randolph Parrott Sr.
SHELBY — Mr. Randolph Howard Parrott Sr., 75, of 207 East Avenue, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Enloe Mortuary.

Phillip Hughes Jr.
KINGS MOUNTAIN — Phillip Daniel Hughes Jr., infant son of Phillip Daniel Hughes Sr. and Sherry Marie Bridges, died Thursday, Oct. 28, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. today at Mountain Rest Cemetery, with the Rev. Mike Chambers officiating.
The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. today at Harris Funeral Home and at other times, at the home of the grandmother, Diane Hughes, 701 W. Gold St. in Kings Mountain.

Edna Lovelace
MORGANTON — Mrs. Edna Carpenter Lovelace, 86, of 175 Oakdale Drive, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at College Pines.
Born in Cleveland County on July 11, 1913, she was a daughter of the late Forrest O. and Minnie Harmon Carpenter. She was a retired employee of Broughton Hospital and was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Cleveland County.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles B. Lovelace; two brothers, Harmon Carpenter and Paul Carpenter; and a sister, Evelyn Carpenter.
Surviving are three sons, Charles B. Lovelace Jr. of Massachusetts, Bill Lovelace of Morganton and Joe Lovelace of Lawndale; a daughter, Carolyn Kelley of Whittier, Calif.; a brother, Warren Carpenter of Hickory; a sister, Lucy Burgess of Charlotte; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Colonial Chapel of Sossoman Funeral Home in Morganton, with the Rev. Ron Watts officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday in St. Paul’s United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and at other times, at the home.

Virginia Willis
CHERRYVILLE — Mrs. Virginia Blackwell Willis, 71, of 700 Self St., died Saturday, Oct. 30, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at North Brook Baptist Church, with the Revs. Ray Pennell and Keith Love officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Carpenter’s Funeral Home and at other times, at the home of her son, Jimmy Willis, 126 Lancer Drive in Cherryville.

Sylvia Webster
SPINDALE — Mrs. Sylvia Mills Webster, 76, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at The Woodlands Nursing Center in Rutherfordton.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church in Forest City. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday at Thompson Brothers Funeral Home in Forest City.

Thomas Gantt
SHELBY — Mr. Thomas Steve Gantt, 45, of 601 Wilson Cornwell Road, died Friday, Oct. 29, 1999, at his home.
Born in Cleveland County, he was a son of Bobby Gene and Elizabeth Howard Gantt of the home.
Surviving are three brothers and sisters-in-law, Louis and Barbara Gantt of Kings Mountain, Ricky and Marilyn Gantt of Shelby and Larry and Teresa Gantt of Lawndale; a sister and brother-in-law, Teresa and Bill Thrift of Lawndale; two nieces, Katie and Kensey Gantt of Lawndale; and a nephew, Jason Gantt of Belwood.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Baptist Church, with Dr. Randy Bridges officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times, at the home.
