Merceditas Elizondo
MOORESBORO - Dr. Merceditas Orquiola Elizondo, 58, of 2357 Harris-Henrietta Road, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at her residence.
A native of Cebu City, Philippines, she was the daughter of the late Leodolfo and Mercedes Orquiola. She received a doctor of medicine from Cebu Institute of Medicine and a post doctorate of tropical medicine and hygiene from Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand. She also trained at the University of Djakarta, the Indonesia Department of Pediatrics and Child Health, the University of Singapore Department of Social Medicine, Family Planning and Bacteriology; the Institute of Medical Research, Kuala Lumpar, Malaysia, Department of Medicine and Parasitology. She was the chief resident of pathology at Morristown Memorial Hospital in New Jersey and a fellow of pediatric pathology at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.
She managed her practice at Cliffside Clinic from 1981 until 1998. During this time she performed duties as medical director of the Rutherford County Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Project, was an attending physician at White Oak Manor Nursing Center, and directed the medical services of the Rutherford Department of Corrections. She served on the Board of Directors for Rutherford, Polk and McDowell Health Department, was a director for Hospice of Rutherford County, was former director for Rutherford County Mental Health, was a medical adviser for the Rutherford County chapter of the American Cancer Society, director of First Citizens Bank of Rutherford County and was the former director Prevention of Abuse in The Home (PATH).
She is survived by a son, Paul Elizondo of Charlotte; two brothers, Saturnino Palacious Orquiola and Ethel Waldo Orquiola, both of the Philippines; and two sisters, Ligaya Orquiola Gonzales and Ninfa Orquiola Garcia, both of the Philippines.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, Box 336, Forest City, N.C. 28043.

Hubert Jolly Sr.
AYDEN - Mr. Hubert Allen Jolly Sr., 88, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
A native of Pitt County, he was born on Sept. 23, 1911, the son of the late William Oscar Jolly Sr. and Cornelia Mumford Jolly. He was a retired farmer. He was a member of the Ayden Fire Department and was a Marine.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances R. Jolly.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Jeri J. and Charles Horn of Shelby and Joyce J. and Quill Albritton of Ayden; twin sons and their wives, Hubert A. Jolly Jr. and Jean Jolly and George V. and Pam Jolly, all of Ayden; one brother, Wilbur Jolly of Louisburg; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at Farmer Funeral Service in Ayden.
Memorials may be made to Ayden First Baptist Church, Ayden Fire Department or the charity of the donor's choice.

Mable Davis
SHELBY - Mrs. Mable Hardin Davis, 85, of White Oak Manor, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ella Ellis Hardin. She was employed by Ella Mill as a spinner. She was a member of Patterson Springs Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Aspy Davis; and one son, Jerry Wayne Davis of Belwood.
A graveside service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Patterson Springs Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Steve Waters officiating.
Memorials may be made to Patterson Springs Baptist Church, 2107 Cleveland Ave., Grover, N.C. 28073.

Sally McNeely
BESSEMER CITY - Mrs. Sally Burns McNeely, 73, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at her residence.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the chapel at Sisk-Butler Funeral Home with Dr. Wayne Blackwood officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

David Ray
FOREST CITY - Mr. David D. Ray, 66, of 190 Frances St., died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in Van Wert, Ohio.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Harrelson Funeral Home.

Claude Logan Jr.
RUTHERFORDTON - Mr. Claude Logan Jr. of 295 Roper Loop Road died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at Woodland Skilled Nursing Center.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Gold Hill Baptist Church with Minister Powell Lynch Jr. officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Mount Nebo Baptist Church Cemetery in Lake Lure.

Susie Harris
SHELBY - Susie M. Harris, 89, of White Oak Manor, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at her home.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Dockery's Home of Funerals Inc.

Linwood Homesley
SHELBY - Mr. Linwood Homesley, 83, of 1101 N. Morgan St., died Friday, Jan. 14, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, he is the son of Mrs. Fairell Homesley. He attended Cleveland High School and later served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Wardell Chapel AME Zion Church and was an employee of Freeman's Shoe Shop for many years.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Haywood Homesley Sr., and a daughter, Minnie Grace Homesley.
He is survived by his wife, Alma Bratton Homesley; five sons, Ray Homesley and Gerald Homesley, both of Shelby, Dennis Homesley of Clinton, Md., Leon Homesley of New York City and Kevin Homesley of Charlotte; two daughters, Ann Morgan of Atlanta and Janice Barber of Great Falls, S.C.; a sister-in-law, Grace Homesley of Shelby; a nephew, Haywood Homesley Jr.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Wardell Chapel AME Zion Church with the Rev. Luke Curry officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends a half-hour before the service Thursday at the church, and at other times at 305 Suttle St.

Martha Jones
SHELBY - Miss Martha Edith Jones, 73, formerly of 309 Wilson St., died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2000, at the home of a sister, 5301 Tower Road, Greensboro.
A native of Lumberton, she was the daughter of the late Rev. and Mrs. H.C. Jones. She was a graduate of Winston-Salem State University and received her master's degree from N.C. A&T State University. She taught in several public schools in North Carolina. She retired from Cleveland School in Shelby. She was a member of Waddell Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church, where she served as music directress, president of the Parent Body of the Woman's Home and Overseas Missionary Society. She was past president of the Cleveland County Chapter of the Winston-Salem State University Alumni Association, a member of the National Education Association, National Retired Teachers Association and a life member of the NAACP.
She is survived by one sister, Emanuline J. Smith of Greensboro; two brothers, Earl W. Jones of Shelby and Johnnyson P. Jones of Arlington, Va.; and two sisters-in-law.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Waddell Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church with the Rev. Luke Curry officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Winston-Salem.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the church.

Louise Carson
COLUMBUS - Mrs. Louise Carson, Route 2, Box 1784, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, at St. Luke Hospital.
The funeral will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Zion Grove A.M.E. Zion Church with the Rev. Rob Roy Staley officiating.
The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Zion Grove A.M.E. Zion Church.

Eunice Conway
CHARLOTTE - Ms. Eunice Lindsay Conway, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at her residence.
A native of Pender County, she was retired from Barclays American, where she was an executive secretary after 20 years of service. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Circle 6 and the Best Years Club. She was a member and Past Regent of the Jane Parks McDowell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a former member of the National Secretaries Association.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Libby and Thomas L. Harrill of Shelby; one brother, Costin Lindsay of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Thomas L. Harrill Jr., and his wife, Connie, of Kings Mountain, Paula Yount and her husband, Patrick, of Aberdeen and Josh Harrill of Shelby; and two great-grandchildren, Kathryn Harrill and Caroline Yount.
The funeral will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, Wilson Chapel, 5301 Albemarle Road, with the Rev. Andrew Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Friday one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Richard "Dick" Gray
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Richard "Dick" H. Gray, 55, of 107 Family Farm Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
A memorial service will be Friday at 7 p.m. at Christian Freedom Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Chambers officiating.

SPINDALE - Mr. Don Earl Davis, 77, of 303 Power St., died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at his residence.
The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. at Crowe's Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Malone Thomason, Billy Vaughn and Bruce Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Esther Baldwin Stowe, 83, of 831 N. Piedmont Ave., died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at Carver Living Center in Durham.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Mountain Rest Cemetery with the Rev. Olin Byrum officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home.

Billy Hoyle
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Billy J. Hoyle, 57, of 104 Persimmon Creek Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Hospice at Wendover.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born on Oct. 24, 1942, the son of the late J.C. Hoyle.
He was a supervisor at Hayward Pool Products. He was a member of Lawndale Missionary Methodist Church, a member and past president of the Serenity Club and a member of its Board of Directors. He was secretary of the Hall Goforth Kings Mountain Group and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 202. He was a veteran of the Navy on the U.S.S. Thuban in the Cuban Crisis.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Malark Hoyle of Kings Mountain; his mother, Pearl Hunt Hoyle of Polkville; a son and daughter-in-law, Stahr and Jackie Hoyle of Nashville, Tenn.; stepson, Chad Robinson of Lattimore; stepson and his wife, Chris and Pam Robinson of Boiling Springs; a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Tonnie Cooke of Casar; and six grandchildren.
The funeral will be 2:30 p.m. Friday at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lamar Hewitt, Fred Towery and Jack Waters officiating. Burial will be at Palm Tree United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home.

FOREST CITY — Mr. Clyde Franklin Smith, 83, of 142 Plymouth Lane, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital. A graveside service will be Monday at 2 p.m. at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. Harrelson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Woodrow Skates
SHELBY — Mr. Woodrow Wilson Skates, 78, of 2021 Willis Drive, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at his residence. A native of Cowpens, S.C., he was the son of the late Henry and Julia Huskey Skates. He was retired from Esther Mill Company and was a member of Zoar Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Gerthie Mildred Bowen Skates. He is survived by one son, Henry Skate of Shelby; one daughter, Faye Smith of Shelby; two brothers, Red Skates of Cowpens and Till Skates of South Carolina; three sisters, Elsie Davis of Cowpens, Lula Skates and Louise Skates, both of South Carolina; a special friend, Carolyn White of Shelby; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and other times at the home of a son, Henry Skates, 3230 Marshall Wolfe Road, Shelby.

David Ray
FOREST CITY — Mr. David Daniel Ray, 66, of 190 Frances St., died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in Van Wert, Ohio. A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Claude R. and Martha Randall Ray. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Henrietta. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean Conflict, and was a driver for Overnight Trucking Company. He is survived by his wife, Betty Estep Ray; three sons and one daughter-in-law, Johnny Ray and Terry Ray, both of Forest City, and Dwayne and Elizabeth Ray of Shelby; two brothers, Clarence Ray and Eugene Ray, both of Spindale; two sisters, Mrs. Merle Rich and Mrs. Helen Hardin, both of Forest City; and two grandchildren, Ashley Marie Ray and David Lee Ray. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Henrietta with the Revs. Trey Gilliam and Boyce Gregory officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. John Willis
CONCORD — Mr. John Oliver Willis, 93, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Concord Nursing Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was born on June 6, 1906, the son of the late Joseph Simeon and Jane Brackett Willis. He was reared on a farm in Casar along with one brother and three sisters. His father and his grandfather, John R. Willis, were Confederate veterans. He was a business man. In the 1920s he worked on the construction of the original Charlotte Motor Speedway in Pineville. After marrying in 1927, he moved to Charlotte, where he worked for McClarin Rubber Company. In 1934, they moved to Concord and established the Nu-Tread Tire Recapping Service. In 1947, he built the Concord Drive-In; in 1949, the Starlite Drive-In; and in 1950, the Carolina Drive-In. The Concord Drive-In was rebuilt in 1954 and became the Willis Drive-In. In 1959, he built the Willis Village Shopping Center, which closed in the mid-80s. He then opened Willis Flea Market. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Concord. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Lallage Hoyle Willis. He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Harold Kenneth and Diane Willis of Concord; one granddaughter, Cammie Hamilton and her husband, Alex, of Concord; and one great-grandson, Nicholas Hamilton of Concord. The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Wilkinson’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Tom Anderson officiating. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Saturday one hour before the service at the funeral home and at other times at 828 Brafford Drive. Gene “Woot” Whisnant
POLKVILLE — Mr. Gene “Woot” Barber Whisnant, 64, of 4501 Polkville Road, died Jan. 19, 2000, at the Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, he was born on March 8, 1935, the son of the late C. Spurgeon and Lucille Wright Whisnant. He was a retired truck driver for Cleveland Container Service. He was a member of Polkville United Methodist Church, Polkville Ruritan Club, Polkville Volunteer Fire Department and a former member of the Polkville Lions Club. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Whisnant and D.C. Whisnant, and a sister, Elizabeth Whisnant. He is survived by two brothers, Charles Whisnant of Hildebran and Joe Lane Whisnant of Shelby. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Polkville United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jack Owenby, Alton Martin and Zeno Wright. Burial will be at Polkville United Methodist Church Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church one half hour before the service. The family will receive friends Friday night from 6:30 to 8 at Stamey Funeral Home. Susie Harris
SHELBY — Susie Bratton Harris, 90, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at White Oak Manor. A native of Cherokee County, S.C., she was the son of the late Claronee Bratton. She was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Waco and St. Mearon Court No.6 Herion of Jericho. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, U.S. Harris and one son, Joe Harris. She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Raymond O. Harris of Passaic, N.J., and Floyd and Brenda Harris of Baltimore; two brothers, James Bratton of Shelby and Boy Bratton of Brooklyn, N.Y.; three sisters, Irene Baxter of Waco, Alma Homesley of Shelby and Naomi Ratchford of Philadelphia; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. James E. Montgomery officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:30 p.m. to the time of the service. Dockery’s Home of Funerals Inc. is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Donnis Jenkins
SHELBY — Mrs. Donnis McSwain Jenkins, 69, of 1524 Padgett Road, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Cletus A. and Zuda Brooks McSwain. She was a homemaker and a member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Arlon McSwain, and a sister, Eda Humphries. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, H. Max Jenkins; two sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky and Sabrina Jenkins and Jerry and Debra Jenkins, all of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patty and Terry Beck and Debbie and David Glenn, all of Shelby; a sister, Joyce Walker of Shelby; six grandchildren, Nicholas Jenkins, Angie Campbell, Megan Jenkins, Lauren Paige Jenkins, Tyler Glenn and Ashley Glenn; two step-grandchildren, Ashley and Lauren Allard; and two great-grandchildren, Amber and Kala Campbell. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Rehobeth United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mary Carnes officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.
