FOREST CITY - Mr. Ray Hedden, 72, of 135 Sedgefield Drive, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at The Woodlands Nursing Center.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at The Padgett & King Mortuary, with the Revs. Ronnie Marlowe, Darvey Hensley and Doug Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at the funeral home.

Worth Johnson
FOREST CITY - Mr. Worth Lovelace Johnson, 84, of 730 Doggett Road, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Forest City, with Dr. Barry Keys and the Rev. Paul Brock officiating. Burial will be in Round Hill Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service.
Crowe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SHELBY - Ms. Holly Harrelson Black, 22, of 3042 Fallston-Waco Road, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Stamey Funeral Home of Fallston.

James Hawkins
FOREST CITY - Mr. James T. "Red" Hawkins, 83, of 130 Flack Road, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at his home.
Born in Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Roland Chivous and Alice Mae Wilson Hawkins. He was a retired cab driver and a Baptist.
He is survived by his wife, Thelma Price Hawkins of the home; two sons, Jim Hawkins of Rutherfordton and Sonny Hawkins of Forest City; a daughter, Martha Gonzales of Reidville, S.C.; a sister, Hazel M. Upton of Spartanburg, S.C.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Waddell officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Jim Hawkins, 2991 Poors Ford Road, Rutherfordton.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, P.O. Box 336, Forest City, N.C. 28043.

Anita Lemmons
SHELBY - Mrs. Anita Melton McGinnis Lemmons, 35, of 3912 Towery Road, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at her residence. A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of William Lawson Melton of Douglasville, Ga., and Linda and Dale Carver of Shelby. She was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Richard W. Lemmons of the home; one son, Dustin Dale Lemmons of the home; one brother, Wayne Melton of Clover, S.C.; two sisters, Angela Greene of Mooresboro and Melanie Hicks of Fort Stewart, Ga.; and her grandparents, the Rev. and Mrs. W.M. Jenkins. The funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Beaver Dam Baptist Church with the Revs. Ken Pruitt and W. M. Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 7:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and other times at the home of Linda and Dale Carver, 109 Delmar Road, Shelby.

Holly Harrelson Black
SHELBY - Mrs. Holly Elizabeth Harrelson Black, 22, of 3042 Fallston-Waco Road, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. A native of Gaston County, she was born on April 24, 1977, the daughter of Lewis G. and Sarah Baker Harrelson of Shelby. She worked at several area nursing homes and did private duty nursing. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Cherryville and a 1995 Burns High School graduate. She attended Gaston College. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Michael Black of Cherryville; one son, Brandon Black of the home; and one brother, Phillip E. Harrelson of Waco. A private funeral will be conducted by the Rev. David Coffey. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park. The body may be viewed today from 3 to 7 at Stamey Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Children's Home Society, P.O. Box 14608, Greensboro, N.C. 27415.

Fred Carpenter
CONCORD - Mr. Fred M. Carpenter, 88, of 184 Tournament Drive, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Northeast Medical Center in Concord. The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at St. John A.M.E. Zion Church in Rutherfordton with Presiding Elders James McDougald and William R. Robinson officiating. Burial will follow at New Hope Cemetery in Rutherfordton. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the the church. Thompson Brothers Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Buena Summerford
SHELBY - Mrs. Buena K. Summerford, 75, of White Oak Manor in Shelby, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at her residence. A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Nicholas Winfield and Bertha Alberty Hullender. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Summerford; three sisters, Ethel H. Bell, Evelyn H. Drews and Oledia H. Dise; and three brothers, Edgar Hullender, George Hullender and Harvey Hullender. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be today at 3 p.m. at Hullender Cemetery with the Rev. John Ware officiating. The family will receive friends today from 1:30 to 2:30 at Harris Funeral Home.

HENRIETTA - Mr. Rey David Flores, 20, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, in Forest City. The funeral will be Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Immaculate Conception Church in Forest City with Father Gabriel Meehan officiating. Burial will follow at Cabesera Municipal in Sanandres Timilpan, Mexico. James "Phil" Neill
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. James "Phil" Neill, 72, of 303 S. Mountain St., died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at his home. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Leonards Fork Baptist Church cemetery in Lincolnton, with the Rev. Darrell Bost officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Carpenter's Funeral Home.

Ethel Griffin
GAFFNEY, S.C. - Mrs. Ethel Scruggs Griffin, 69, of 894 Concord Road, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Little Memorial Baptist Church with the Revs. Wayne Parker and James Humphries officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family received friends Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8 at White Columns Funeral Service in Gaffney. The family will also receive friends at the residence.

Arnold "Jatter" Tritt
SHELBY - Mr. Arnold "Jatter" Tritt, 83, of 1300 S. Morgan St., died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Charlie and Jessie Johnson Tritt. He was retired from Lily Mill, where he was a shipping clerk, and he was a member of the Lily Old Timers Club. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Lizzie Davis Tritt of the home; one son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Gayle Tritt of Mint Hill; one brother and sister-in-law, Dick and Elsie Tritt of Rock Hill, S.C.; one half brother and sister-in-law, C.L. and Margie Tritt of Rock Hill; one half sister, Elizabeth Tritt Humphries of Cliffside; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be Thursday at 4 p.m. at Lily Memorial Baptist Church with Dr. Ernest Arnold and the Rev. Marion Adams officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Lily Memorial Baptist Church, 406 Whitener St., Shelby, N.C. 28152.

Kitty Cobb
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Ms. Sarah Katherine "Kitty" Falls Cobb, 67, formerly of Kings Mountain, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at White Oak Manor in Shelby.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harrison Hinson officiating. Burial will follow at Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home and other times at the home of the son at 809 Kingswood Court, Kings Mountain.

Ruth Ward
SPINDALE - Mrs. Ruth Aldridge Ward, 79, of 406 Maryland St., died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Spencer Baptist Church with the Revs. Billy Vaughn, Bruce Caldwell and Malone Thomason officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Crowe Funeral Home.

Wiley Smith
GOLDSBORO - Mr. Wiley Smith, 81, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at The Pines of Goldsboro.
A native of Wayne County, he was the son of the late William Hopton and Mary Elizabeth Pool Smith. He was a 1940 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving as an intelligence officer during World War II. A certified public accountant, he worked with Smith Hardware Co. in Goldsboro and was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. A resident of Shelby from 1973 until 1987, he was employed with Kendall Drug Co. and a member of the Church of the Redeemer. He co-founded the Shelby Art League.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hilda Longest Smith, who died in 1986, and one sister, Elizabeth Smith Cheatham Wolff.
He is survived by four children, Wiley Jr. and Mary Smith of Shelby; Mary S. and Ronnie McDaniel of Raleigh, Margaret S. and Al Chesson of Williamston, and Alice S. and Charles Royal of Goldsboro; and eight grandchildren, Maggie McDaniel, Will Chesson, Sara Chesson, Anna Chesson, Elizabeth Royal, Charlie Royal, Marc Smith and Turner Smith.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, with the Revs. Joseph Herring and William S. Brettmann officiating. Burial will follow at Willowdale Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight at the home of Alice and Charles Royal, 2502 Dawn Circle, Goldsboro.
Memorials may be made to Church of the Redeemer, 502 W. Sumter St., Shelby, N.C. 28150; the Cleveland County Memorial Library, P.O. Box 1120, Shelby, N.C. 28151; or the Autism Society of North Carolina, 505 Oberlin Road, Suite 230, Raleigh, N.C. 27605.

FOREST CITY - Mr. Major Willard Walker, 82, of 415 Dogwood Lane, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at his home.

Pauline Hamrick
SHELBY - Mrs. Pauline Pearson Hamrick, 83, of 1101 N. Morgan St., Century Care of Shelby, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

Charles Kirby Jr.
RUTHERFORDTON - Mr. Charles Davis Kirby Jr., 87, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Crowe Funeral Home.

Deborah J. O'Quinn
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Deborah J. O' Quinn, 44, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2000, in West Palm Beach, Fla., where she was a resident.
A graveside memorial service will be Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in the Alexander Cemetery, with the Rev. Frances Bridges officiating.
The Padgett & King Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Billy Campbell
ELLENBORO - Mr. Billy Gray Campbell, 64, of 711 Webb Road, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Montgomery County, he was born July 14, 1935, the son of the late John and Hattie Deaton Campbell. He was a retired textile worker.
He is survived by three sons, Charles Campbell and Joel Campbell, both of North Carolina, and Rick Campbell of Tennessee; two daughters, Elaine Worth of Virginia and Rhonda Campbell of North Carolina; a brother, Jack Campbell of North Carolina; three sisters, Estelle Simmons, Betty Williamson, and Deliah Brown, all of North Carolina; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Biscoe. Arrangements will be announced by Crowe Funeral Home in Rutherfordton.

Pauline Hamrick
SHELBY - Mrs. Pauline Pearson Hamrick, 83, of Century Care of Shelby, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Doc John and Mary Ocie Scruggs Pearson. She was a homemaker and a member of Community Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Gibb Hamrick.
She is survived by two sons, Terry Pearson Hamrick of Shelby and Charles Hamrick of Mooresboro; four daughters, Mary Boyer of Los Angeles, Wanda Watkins of Earl, Eldora Whitesides of Shelby and Teresa Brown of Charlotte; two brothers, Bob Pearson of Shelby and Tom Pearson of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Daisy Willis of Shelby and Nell Bumgardner of Patterson Springs; five grandsons, Sean Childers, Gary Watkins, Kevin Hamrick, Kenneth Hamrick and David Barnett; six granddaughters, Hope Martin, Crystal Russ, Karen Kennedy, Tiffany Guthrie, Jessica Hamrick and Megan Brown; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral is today at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Clay-Barnette Funeral Home with the Revs. John R. Bridges and Dan Qurollo officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family received friends Thursday at the funeral home and will receive friends other times at the home of a son, Terry Hamrick, 827 Kings Road, Shelby.

John Davis Jr.
SHELBY - Mr. John Ed Davis Jr. of Gastonia Village Assisted Living Alzheimer's Home, formerly of West Sumter Street, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A native of Rutherford County, he was born Oct. 21, 1917, the son of the late John Ed Davis Sr. and Mattie Hamrick Davis. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Essie "Sug" Davis; a brother, Walter Davis; and a sister, Anne Davis Lewis.
He attended Wake Forest University and then graduated with honors from N.C. State University with a degree in vocational agriculture. He taught agriculture for two years at Mooresboro High School. He was an Army veteran, serving from 1942 until 1945. After being discharged from the military, he worked for Farmers Home Administration in Cleveland County for 31 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, a department superintendent of the young married, an usher, a training union sponsor and chairman of the welfare committee. He served as president of the Christian Service Organization at Gardner-Webb University. He was a member of the Cleveland County Social Services Board and the boards of directors for Habitat for Humanity, the Council on Aging and the Hawaii Baptist Academy in Honolulu. He served as chairman of the Piedmont Council of Boy Scouts of America and as a trustee of the Cleveland County Memorial Library. He helped organize and served as chairman of the Red Cross blood program in Cleveland County and was the chairman of the Cleveland County chapter of the American Cancer Society. He was chairman of the Housing Committee of the Piedmont Area Development Association and was an officer on the board of the senior center. He served as co-supervisor for the construction of the homeless shelter and was chairman of the board of directors that created the "Lions Senior Village." He was a lifetime member of the Shelby Lions Club and Lions Club International, where he held many positions including District Governor, president of the N.C. Eye and Human Tissue Bank, chairman of the N.C. Association for the Blind, and chairman of the state White Cane drive. He was a recipient of the Governor's Volunteer award, Shelby's Citizen of the Year and the Jaycees Distinguished Service award.
He is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Bernard and Lynne Morand of Monroe, Scott and Jan Cole of Shelby, and Al and Pat Whatley of Shelby; six grandchildren, Scotti Cole Youngman, Natalie Morand, Shannon Whatley, Nick Cole, Damien Morand and Trisha Whatley; a brother and sister-in-law, Billy and Betty Davis of Lattimore; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Faith Adams of Lattimore, Frances Bryce of Shelby, and Jean and John Bankhead of Shelby.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Robert Canoy officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the church before the service from 1 to 2:45 p.m. and other times at the home of Al and Pat Whatley, 1411 Briarcliff Road, Shelby.
Memorials may be made to the Personal Assistance Fund at First Baptist Church, 120 N. Lafayette St., Shelby, N.C. 28150 or to Alzheimer's Disease Research, 15825 Shady Grove Road, Suite 140, Rockville, Md., 20850-4022.
Clay-Barnette Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
