FOREST CITY - Miss Winnie Snow Vess, 80, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at Autumn Care of Saluda.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Cool Springs Cemetery, with the Rev. Billy Honeycutt officiating.
The family will receive friends today from 10 to 10:30 a.m. at Padgett & King Mortuary.

Evia Harris
SHELBY - Mrs. Evia "Granny" Bowen Harris, 86, of 1003 Carter Road, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
Born in Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Mamie Bowen. She was a homemaker and a member of Hartland Missionary Methodist Church in Morganton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Washington Harris, and a daughter, Dorothy Ramsey.
Surviving are two sons, James Ervin Harris and his wife, Rosie, of Ellenboro and Junior Cogdell of Shelby; two daughters, Barbara Baugham and her husband, Radford, of Shelby and Marie Berry and her husband, Fred, of Connelly Springs; 19 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home, with the Revs. Fred Tyler and Charles Cook officiating. A graveside service will follow at 4 p.m. at the Hartland Missionary Methodist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Lonnie Smith
MARION - Mr. Lonnie V. Smith, 96, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at home.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born July 31, 1903, the son of the late Henry and Ethel Richards Smith. He was a charter member of Trinity Hill Free Will Baptist Church. He was a former employee of H&B Lumber Co. and Marion Manufacturing Co. and also did some farming.
In additon to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Verna Mae Flynn Smith, and a daughter, Margaret Hollifield Harrington.
He is survived by four sons, Billy R. Smith and Bobby D. Smith, both of Marion, Richard Smith of Morganton and H.B. Smith of Tacoma, Wash.; two daughters, Inez Hudson of Casar and Leona Cook of Hickory; 21 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Trinity Hill Free Will Baptist Church, with the Revs. Bill Williams, Carl Roland and Jerry McClain officiating. Burial will be at Hicks Chapel Baptist Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. before the service at the church.

Renfro Peden
SENECA, S.C. - Mr. Thomas Renfro Peden, 81, of 306 B. Fair Play St., died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at Lila Doyle Nursing Care Facility.
The funeral will be Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at Trinity Baptist Church, with the Revs. James Stokes, Bill Stevenson and Bob Fergeson officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Burial will follow in the Oconee Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends before the service from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the church.

MAIDEN - Mr. Richard Lyles, 32, of 2170 Maiden-Salem Road, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at his home.

GROVER - Mr. Lee T. "Red Baron" Biddix, 62, of 131 Watterson Road, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at his home.
A graveside service will be today at 11 a.m. at Mountain Rest Cemetery in Kings Mountain, with the Rev. Doug Ramsey officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour before the service at Harris Funeral Home in Kings Mountain.

FOREST CITY - Mrs. Ava Nell Martin Smith, 70, of 176 Park Circle, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, at Autumn Care in Saluda.
A graveside service will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Park, with the Revs. Terry Padgett and David Hunsinger officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Crowe's Funeral Home in Rutherfordton.

Willie Lipscomb
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Willie Lipscomb, 87, of 510 Bond St., died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at home.
The funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. at Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter's Funeral Home, with the Rev. Delphine Rouse officiating. Burial will be at Macedonia Church Cemetery in Waco.

CLOVER, S.C. - Mrs. Dovie Sprouse Messer, 83, of White Oak Manor in Kings Mountain, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000 at Kings Mountain Hospital.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Elwood Seamster officiating. Burial will be in Woodside Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home in Clover and other times at the home of her son Harvey Messer, 1575 Jim McCarter Road, Clover.

Pearl Wood
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Pearl Wood, 103, of 275 Hardin Road, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2000, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. H.D. Tate officiating. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will follow at New Zion Baptist Church cemetery in Henrietta.

Francis Gormley
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. Francis Joseph Gormley, 69, of 137 Kester Drive, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at the V.A. Medical Center in Asheville.
A native of the Bronx, N.Y., he was a son of the late Francis and Evelyn Kinsley Gormley. He retired from the U. S. Marine Corps as a lance corporal and served during the Korean Conflict, participating in the Inchon Landing. He was wounded at the Chosen Reservoir and received a Purple Heart. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
He is survived by a brother, James Gormley of Calverton, N.Y.; a sister and her husband, Evelyn G. and William F. Hill of Cherryville; three nieces, Kathleen Mary Hjellming, Jo Ann Dillenbeck and Rita Wood; and two nephews, Benjamin Hill and William Luke Hill.
The funeral will be today at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial with full military honors will follow at Sunset Cemetery, with the Rev. Eric Houseknecht officiating.
The family received friends and a Rosary was said Sunday.
Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GASTONIA - Mrs. Louise Gault Blankenship, 91, of Couthland Terrace, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Ollie Harris Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Willie Shepherd officiating. Burial will be in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Harris Funeral Home.

Marie R. Cook
VALE - Mrs. Marie Rudisill Cook, 61, of 2657 Peeler Road, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 18, 1938, in Lincoln County, she was a daughter of the late Wesley and Maude Bivens Rudisill. She was a homemaker and a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church, where she belonged to United Methodist Women.
She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Dean Cook; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy C. and Ronald Elmore of Shelby; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Earl and Margaret Rudisill and Paul and Linda Rudisill, all of Vale; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Pearl and Hugh Isbell of Hildebran and Ethel and Allen Merrill of Mooresville; and one granddaughter, Michele Dawn Matthews of Vale.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Macedonia United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Tommy Buchanan and Jimmy Galloway officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

SHELBY - Mr. Larry Dean Harris, 58, of 1101 North Morgan St., died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at Century Care of Shelby.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 4 p.m. at Plainsview Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bill Ewing officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

VALE - Mrs. Trudy Randall Thomas, 47, of 9312 Mull Road, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.

Boyce "Shorty" Peeler
SHELBY - Mr. Boyce "Shorty" Lee Peeler, 62, of 340 Double Shoals Road, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at his home.
Born Sept. 11, 1937, in Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Elmer Gamble and Florine Mull Peeler. He worked as a fixer for Howell Mill, and was a mineral collector. He belonged to Double Shoals United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Mullinax Peeler of the home; two daughters, Penny Peeler of Lawndale and Joan Peeler of Shelby; a special child, Jesse Crotts, and a stepson, Joe Crotts, both of the home; four stepdaughters, Debbie Shelton of Cliffside, Freida Lail and Penny Gilliam, both of Shelby and Martha Walker of Smyrna, S.C.; a sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Ray Champion of Shelby; two nephews, Mark Champion and Allen Champion of Shelby; and one grandchild, Amanda Peeler.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Double Shoals United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Reep and Jack Waters officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Cleveland Memorial Park.

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Lionel Johnson, 60, of 2521 Danfort Lane, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at Carolinas Medical Center.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Ebony & White's Funeral Service in Lincolnton, with Brother Herman McLain officiating. Burial will be in Hollybrook Cemetery.

SHELBY - Mrs. Janie Beatrice Jamison Eaves, 86, of 404-1 Orange St., died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at her home.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Ramseur Baptist Church with the Rev. Billy J. Ramseur officiating. Burial will follow at Young Chapel cemetery in Mooresboro. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.

FOREST CITY - Miss Fern Lee Wells, 92, formerly of Newton Cole Road, died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Willow Ridge Nursing Center.
Graveside services will be today at 11 a.m. at the Tanners Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Pat Jobe officiating. The family will receive friends at the home of the sister, Mrs. Dora Harrill. The Padgett and King Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Ethel Carter
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Mrs. Ethel Ramsey Carter, 71, of 300 Ferndale Drive, died Friday, June 29, 2001, at Spartanburg (S.C.) Regional Medical Center.
Born in Rutherford County, she was a daughter of the late Sidney and Fannie Campbell Ramsey. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Michael Carter.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Thomas "Tom" Carter of the home; a daughter, Karen Grandy of Enoree, S.C.; two sons, Greg Carter of the home and Larry Carter of Spotsylvania, Va.; two sisters, Mallie Parker of Kings Mountain and Sally Faulk of Charleston, S.C.; three brothers, Carl Ramsey of Inman, S.C., Clifford Ramsey of Shelby and Carmen Ramsey of Bostic; and four grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Fairview Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charlie Glover officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour before the service, and at other times at the home.
Instead of flowers, the family requests memorials to Fairview Baptist Church, 1551 Bryant Road, Spartanburg, SC 29303.

Robert Gaskey Sr.
SHELBY - Mr. Robert Lee Gaskey Sr., 78, of 1502 Gold Farm Road, formerly of 309 S. Post Road, Shelby, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at his home.
Born in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late George and Mary Etta Thompson Gaskey. He retired from J.P. Stevens and was a member of Central United Methodist Church. He belonged to the Cleveland County Senior Golf Association.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Leonhardt Gaskey; a brother, Willard Gaskey; and five sisters, Idell Allen, Annie Kendrick, Maybelle Walker, Madge Singleton and Mary Dixon.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy Gaskey and Alan Shuford of Shelby; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Robert Jr. and Carol Gaskey of Greensboro, Barry Gaskey of Greenville, S.C., and Marcus and Sylvia Gaskey of Shelby; three brothers, Jack Gaskey of Polkville, Buck Gaskey of Mooresville and George Gaskey Jr. of Chester, S.C.; a sister, Lucille Crotts of Shelby; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graveside funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Sunset Cemetery, with Dr. Joe Reeves officiating.

Born in Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Freeman and Nellie Brown Conner.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard E. Hodge, and a son, Tracy Eugene Hodge.
She is survived by a son, Steven Hodge of Shelby; two daughters, Crystal Fountain and Renee Hodge of Rutherfordton; and three grandchildren.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Piedmont Baptist Church, with the Revs. Shane Duncan, George Whitmire and Tim Conner officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

HENRIETTA - Mr. James Franklin Weaver, 81, died Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Saluda.
The graveside funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Caroleen-Henrietta Cemetery, with Dr. Tim Metcalf and the Rev. Cecil Lovelace officiating.
The family will receive friends today from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home in Caroleen.

Irene Warlick
LAKE BLUFF, Ill. - Mrs. Bessie Irene Cook Meade Warlick, 87, of 700 Jenkisson Ave., died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Pebble Brook Nursing Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was born April 9, 1915, a daughter of the late Aaron Lee and Hattie Wray Cooke. She was retired from public work and was a member of St. Paul Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Lee Roy Meade; her second husband, Roy Warlick; three sons, Ray Meade, Ralph Meade and Carrolle Meade; four brothers; and one sister.
She is survived by two sons, William Steve Meade of Florida and Jack Meade of Lake Bluff, Ill.; a daughter, Ruth Chisholm of Waukegan, Ill.; two brothers, Aaron Cook of Hickory and Claude Cooke of Casar; a sister, Frances Cooke of Wisconsin; 10 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 3:30 p.m. at St. Paul Baptist Church with Dr. Ernest W. Speagle officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends today from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the church.

KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Geneva Homesley Neal, 79, of 1419 Shelby Road, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
A native of Gaston County, she was a daughter of the late R. Durant and Barbara Emma Hallman Homesley. She was a retired nurse from Kings Mountain Hospital and a member of El Bethel United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Fred R. Neal of Kings Mountain; a son, Daniel F. Neal of Palm Springs, Calif.; a daughter and son-in-law, Dianna and Larry Allen of Kings Mountain; two granddaughters and grandsons-in-law, Angel Allen and Carroll McCray of Starksville, Miss., and Laura Allen and John Gold of Shelby; a grandson, Aaron Allen of Kings Mountain; great-grandchildren, Trey and Meredith McCray of Starksville, Miss., and Matt and Lauren Gold of Shelby; and a sister and brother-in-law, Christine and Paul David Poston of Rock Hill, S.C.
Services will be Monday at 2 p.m. at El Bethel United Methodist Church with the Revs. David Greene and Bruce Hobson officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church following the service and other times at the home.
