James "Jay" White
BELWOOD - Mr. James "Jay" Derwin White, 88, of 307 Old Belwood Road, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., he was the son of the late Thomas Franklin and Jessie Lemmons White. He was retired from Lynch Construction Company, Md. Where he was a carpenter. He was a member of Knob Creek United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Stella L. Willis White; a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Hattie White of Belwood; a brother, Thomas D. White of Blacksburg; four sisters, Edna Couch of Gaffney, Sarah Moss, Emma Jean McDaniel and Ann McDaniel, all of Blacksburg; three grandchildren, Vonya Davis, Kimball White and Regina Kaschak; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Stamey Funeral Home Chapel in Fallston with the Revs. Steve Kiser and Charles Worley officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn of Lincolnton.
The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Knob Creek United Methodist Church, 5701 Fallston Road, Lawndale, N.C. 28090.

James Boyd Sr.
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. James L. Boyd Sr., 85, of 211 W. King St., died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by J.W. Gill & Sons Funeral Home.

Ruth Schenck
LAWNDALE - Mrs. Ruth Hoyle Schenck, 87, of 126 Shaker Drive, died Monday, May 15, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Pinkney and Lula Crouse Hoyle. She was retired from Cleveland County Schools having worked at Burns High School. She was a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William "Boot" Schenck.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Omega and Calvin Spikes of Shelby, Glenora and Jack Carter of Boothwyn, Pa. and Gayla Schenck of Memphis, Tenn.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Lionel Schenck of Lawndale and Phillip and Edna Schenck of Shelby; two sisters, Juanita Clark of Shelby and Thelma Hoyle of Charlotte; six brothers, Cethel Hoyle of Shelby, Elwood Hoyle of Montclair, N.J., Nathaniel Hoyle of Baltimore, Md., Lendon Hoyle, Robert Hoyle, and Willard Hoyle, all of Plainfield, N.J.; six grandchildren; and a niece, Wyonella Elmore Gardner of Shelby.
The funeral will be Friday at 4 p.m. at Philadelphia United Methodist Church with the Revs. Roger Hunter and Robert H. McDowell officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wendover, 951 Wendover Heights Drive, Shelby, N.C. 28150.

Ralph Lankford
MARION - Mr. Ralph S. Lankford, 69, of Hwy 221 North, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at Memorial Mission Hospital in Asheville.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Clarence and Maudie Schittles Lankford. He was a shoe salesman with Young's Shoe Store and was a member of Joppa Lodge No. 401 A.F. and A.M. He was a member of Landis Presbyterian Church, where he served as deacon, and was a lay speaker for the Methodist Church. He served in the Army during the Korean War.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dwight Lankford.
He is survived by his wife, Beatrice "Bill" Buchanan Lankford; a daughter and son-in-law, Melisa and Roy Quinlan of Marion; two granddaughters, Zoe Quinlan and Megan Quinlan; and a friend, Kevin McGarr.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of the Western North Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain with the Revs. Ted Mahaffey and Calvin Jett officiating.
Burial will follow at the cemetery with masonic rites.
Memorials may be made to the Masonic Eastern Home, 700 Holden Drive, Greensboro, N.C. 27403 or to the Masonic Children's Home, 600 College St., Oxford, N.C. 27565.

Beulah Reid
BALTIMORE - Mrs. Beulah Boyles Reid, 78, of 424 Mirabila Lane, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, in Baltimore.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at Cone Memorial Chapel of Carpenter's Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Baynard officiating.
Burial will follow at City Memorial Cemetery.

Ruth Logan
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Ruth Mae Logan, 78, of 242 E. Spruce St., died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at her home.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Thompson Brothers Funeral Home.

James Carroll Jr.
SHELBY - Mr. James Roy Carroll Jr., 17, of 243 Dakar Drive, died Saturday, May 13, 2000 at Moss Lake.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.

FOREST CITY - Mr. Kenneth Emerson, 62, of 1292 Henson Road, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at the VA Medical Center in Asheville.

Margaret Beatty
COLUMBIA, S.C. - Mrs. Margaret Torrence Beatty, 90, formerly of Cliffside, died Monday, May 15, 2000, at Lexington Medical Center.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home with the Rev. Morris Byers officiating.
Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8 at the funeral home.

Geneva Street
BOSTIC - Mrs. Geneva Quinton Street, 79, of Bostic-Sunshine Highway, died Monday, May 15, 2000, at Oak Grove Health Care Center.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Crowe Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Philbeck officiating.
Burial will follow at Cool Springs Cemetery.

SHELBY - Mr. Golden Pettyjohn Sr., 90, of 1206 Borders Road, died Sunday, May 14, 2000, at his home.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Zion Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Roger W. Fuller officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service at the church.

George Robinson
RUTHERFORTON - Mr. George Steven Robinson, 45, of 233 Whiteside Drive, died Thursday, May 11, 2000, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Rickey Robinson
SHELBY - Mr. Rickey Dean Robinson, 42, of 208 Ramblewood Drive, Apt. 24, died Friday, May 12, 2000, at Thompson Place, Apt. 5.
A memorial service will be today at 1 p.m. at White Oak Springs Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene Pryor officiating
The family will receive friends at the home of a sister, Mrs. Linda Wilson, at 1452 Williamson Road, Kingstown.

James L. Boyd Sr.
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. James Leslie Boyd Sr., 85, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000.
A native of Gaston County, he was the son of the late Miles and Eliza Threat Boyd. He was a lifelong member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church and was a retired textile worker.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Sara Paige Boyd; his stepmother, Mattie Sadler Boyd; a brother, Richard Boyd; and two sisters, Katherine Boyd and Elizabeth Boyd.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, James L. Jr. and Carolyn Boyd and Miles R. and Dorothy Boyd of Charlotte; six daughters and three sons-in-law, Delores and Robert Edgerton, Alta B. and Gregory Terrill, Marlene and Johnnie Hogue, Brenda O. Wright, Arlene Boyd and Valerie Boyd of Kings Mountain; a sister, Alice B. Mitchem of Kings Mountain; 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; one great-nephew; one great-great-nephew; and many other relatives.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Kings Mountain.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service.

Phyllis Pearson
SHELBY - Mrs. Phyllis McCraw Pearson, 79, of 1106 Hardin Drive, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at her home.
A native of Cherokee County, she was the daughter of the late Dee Ellerbe and Lula Foster McCraw. She was self-employed as a beautician. She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church, Ruth Sunday School Class, and Agape Prayer Group.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl R. Pearson.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Karen Pearson of Cherryville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and John Henderson of Shelby and Judy and Mark Thompson of Simpsonville, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Kim Pearson, Brad Pearson, Todd Pearson, Amy Henderson Connolly, Matthew Henderson, Chris Fortenberry and Vicki Fortenberry; and a great-granddaughter, Gracie Pearson.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Eastside Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenny Ashley, Woody Padgett, and Susan Wilson officiating.
The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.
Burial will follow in Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Eastside Baptist Church Building Fund, 1165 Wyke Road, Shelby, N.C. 28150.

Laura Rosser
GASTONIA - Mrs. Laura Mayhew Rosser, 86, of Gaston Rehab and Health Center, formerly of Farmview Drive, died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at her home.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Carothers Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Richard Coles officiating.
Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Carothers Funeral Home.

George Hord
BRISTOL, Tenn. - Mr. George Junior Hord, 86, of 209 Stevenswood Drive, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center.
A native of Lawndale, he lived in Bristol, Tenn., since 1950. He was a retired TVA employee with 38 years of service. He was a 32nd degree Mason, York Rite Commandary, a member of the Bristol Shrine, the Jericho Shrine, Euclid Avenue Baptist Church, and a former patron of Border City Eastern Star #162.
He is survived by his wife, Mary V. Hord; a daughter, Patricia Castle of Emory, Va.; two sisters, Gazzie Putman of Rutherfordton and Edna Hord of Shelby; a brother, Russell Hord of Shelby; three grandchildren, Teri Canter of Knoxville, Tenn., Scott Amburn of Bristol, Va., and Chris Castle of Emory, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at the Akard Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Danny Felty officiating.
Graveside services were conducted Thursday, May 18, 2000, in the Glenwood Cemetery.
The family received friends Wednesday before the service.
Akard Funeral Home had charge of arrangements. Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Jerry Tucker
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. Jerry Dean Tucker, 65, of 117 Owens St., died Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, Kings Mountain, with Dr. John Sloan officiating.
Burial will follow in Mountain Rest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harris Funeral Home and at other times at the home, 117 Owens St.

James Roy Carroll Jr.
SHELBY - Mr. James Roy Carroll Jr., 17, of 243 Dakar Drive, died Saturday, May 13, 2000, at Moss Lake.
Born in Palatka, Fla., he was the son of Gail Blount Carroll and the late James Roy Carroll Sr. He was a sophomore at Burns High School and an employee at Taco Bell. He was a member at River of Life Church.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sister, Jamie Rebecca Carroll of the home; and grandparents, John A. and Ruth Blount of Palatka and James Leroy and Carol Carroll of Gainesville, Fla.; great-grandparents, Donald E. and Nedra Blount of Palatka; and aunts and uncles and cousins.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Clay-Barnette Chapel with the Rev. Parris McCurry and Dr. J.B. Flowe officiating. The service will also be a memorial for James Roy "Jim" Carroll Sr.
Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and at other times at the home at 243 Dakar Drive.

Lee Vess Jr.
CAROLEEN - Mr. Lee Roy Vess Jr., 73, of Caroleen, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Autumn Care Nursing Home.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve Barham and Dr. Jesse Yarbrough officiating.
Burial will follow in the Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Harrelson Funeral Home.
