Josephus 'Billy' Wilson
BESSEMER CITY - Mr. Josephus "Billy" Wilson, 56, of 159 Williams Road, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at his residence.
The funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church with the Rev. Charles Turner officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at the church.
Ebony & White's Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Teresa Maddox
MAIDEN - Mrs. Teresa Mayfield Maddox, 37, of 403 South D. Ave., died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel at Ebony & White's Funeral Service with the Elder Oscar Maddox officiating. Burial will follow in Herndon Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service in the chapel, and at other times at the home of her mother, Margaret Mayfield, 119 Mauney Drive, Lincolnton..

William Blanton
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. William Howard Blanton, 85, of 111 Harrison Road, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Cleveland Funeral Services.
The family headquarters will be at the home of Zeb Blanton, 424 Poplar Springs Church Road in Shelby.

Luvicie Kendrick
SHELBY - Mrs. Luvicie "Vicie" Lowery Kendrick, 101, of 2056 Pleasant Hill Church Road, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at her residence.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late William Barnette and Rebecca Boden Lowery. She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Quinn Kendrick.
She is survived by four sons and their spouses, Edwin and Juanita Kendrick, Joe Reid and Nancy Kendrick, and Lowery and Betty Jean Kendrick, all of Shelby, and Lawson and Janet Kendrick of New Ellenton, S.C.; and two daughters and their spouses, Rebecca and W.H. Borders of Rock Hill, S.C. and Betty Catherine and Joe Davis of Monroe.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Todd Bolin officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home in Shelby and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 2243 Pleasant Hill Church Road, Shelby, NC 28152.

Pearl Grayson
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Pearl Smawley Grayson, 98, of Cherry Mountain Street, died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Fair Haven Rest Home.
Born Aug. 8, 1902, in Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Joseph Mitchell and Sarah Lee Whisnant Smawley. She was a homemaker, retired sales clerk and member of First Baptist Church of Forest City, where she taught Sunday school, worked with children and was active in WMU.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, William Clarence Grayson; four son-in-laws, E.W. Harvey Jr., Hubert C. Dixon, Marvin Burruss Banton and Dr. Marcus R. Jowers; and a grandson, Douglas N. Harvey.
She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Katy Ruth Dixon of Boiling Springs, Mrs. Martha Hipps and her husband, Don, of Charlotte, Mrs. Evangeline Jowers of Winter Haven, Fla., and Mrs. Melba Banton of Duncan, S.C.; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Forest City with the Rev. Elwood Orr and Dr. Barry Keyes officiating. Burial will follow in Cool Springs Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to the Global Mission Fund/First Baptist Church, 211 W. Main St., Forest City, NC 28043.

Hilda Greene
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Hilda Tedder Greene, 49, of 104 Abby Way, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Hospice of Wendover.
Born in Cherokee County, S.C., she was raised in Grover. She was the daughter of the late Roy A. and Elizabeth Bryant Tedder. She was a 1970 graduate of Kings Mountain High School. She was employed for 13 years in the claims department of Wal-Mart in Shelby. She was a member of Landmark Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher and had served on several committees. She was a former Girl Scout leader and a volunteer with the Children's Miracle Network.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Robert David Tedder.
She is survived by her husband, Dean Greene; one son, Nicholas Brian Greene of North Carolina State University in Raleigh; one daughter and son-in-law, Christine Marie and Keith Costner of Shelby; one brother, Malcolm Eugene Tedder of Kings Mountain; one sister, Libby Wallace of Shelby; one grandchild, Logan Keith Costner; and several nieces and nephews.
The memorial will be tonight at 7 at Landmark Baptist Church with the Rev. Allen Davis officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Joseph Lynn "Joe" McGuirt, 50, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Concord Baptist Church with Rev. Chris Masters officiating. Burial will be in Walls Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home, Cliffside.

A.C. Beam Jr.
CHERRYVILLE - Mr. A.C. Beam Jr., 73, of 512 Baker Circle, died Monday, March 12, 2001, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
The funeral will be Thursday at 3 p.m. at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Revs. Wayne Key and Kenneth Gibson officiating. Burial will be in City Memorial Cemetery in Cherryville.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at Carpenter's Funeral Home.

Bill Lipscomb
MELBOURNE, Fla. - Mr. William G. "Bill" Lipscomb, 81, died Monday, March 12, 2001.
He came to Melbourne, Fla., in 1954 from Shelby. He was employed at Kennedy Space Center for 32 years. He was a charter member of Central Baptist Church. He was a handy man. He was a family man and animal lover.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Ailene; two daughters and one son-in-law, Sandra and Jack Robinson and Freda Holcombe; six grandchildren, Vicki Lavendol, John Robinson, Keith Robinson, Bobby Bailey, Donnie Bailey and Dennis Bailey; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, A.G. Lipscomb of Mooresboro; two sisters, Miriam Lee of Boiling Springs and Bessie Underdown of Gastonia.
The funeral will be Thursday at noon at Florida Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be in Florida Memorial Gardens.

Elizabeth Millis
CLIFFSIDE - Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" Dills Millis, 71, of 107 Church St., died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Charles Hayes and Rosalea Cope Dills. She was a retired textile worker and a member of High Shoal Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Earl B. Millis; and a son, Bradley Millis.
She is survived by two sons, Tim Millis and Brian Millis, both of Cliffside; two daughters, Geraldine McAbee of Forest City and Julie Yelton of Rutherfordton; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at High Shoal Baptist Church with the Rev. Eugene Passmore officiating. Burial will be in Providence United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.

Sam Watson
FOREST CITY - Mr. James Samuel Watson, 91, formerly of Forest City, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at White Oak Manor in Spartanburg, S.C.
A graveside service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Floyd's Creek Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Kent Smith and Gene Baker officiating.
The family will receive friends today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen.

Jack Leak
SHELBY - Mr. Jack Leak, 96, of 2514 S. Lafayette St., died Monday, March 12, 2001, at White Oak Manor in Shelby.
A native of Anson County, he was the son of the late Shaw and Ella Streeter Leak. He was a member of New Ellis Chapel Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Love Leak; one son, Jack Leak Jr.; three brothers, Jim Leak, Willie Leak and John Leak; and five sisters, Lestelle L. Wilson, Madeline L. Bennett, Ella L. Johnson, Illa L. Waddell and Arey Leak.
He is survived by two sons, Oscar Homer Leak of Shelby and James Edward Leak of Bessemer City; one daughter, Doristhee Leak Porter of Gastonia; a sister-in-law, Helen Gillespie of Lincolnton; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Shoal Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Isaac officiating. Burial will be in Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service.

John Burnette
ELLENBORO - Mr. John Hicks Burnette, 85, formerly of Ellenboro, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home, Caroleen, with the Revs. Scott Butler and Kenneth Kanipe officiating. The graveside service will be at 4 p.m. Thursday at Oak Grove Cemetery in Marion.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Eva Mae Williams
WACO - Ms. Eva Mae Williams, 52, of 2134 Capernium Road, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Hospice of Wendover.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of Grace L. Fulton Williams and the late James K. Williams. She was a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her sister, Maggie L. Dillard.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by one son and one daughter-in-law, Dalvin Maurice and Tonya Williams of Charlotte; three brothers, James Junior Williams, John Timothy Williams and David Lee Williams, all of Waco; three sisters, Helen Williams Floyd of Gastonia, Louise Lockett of Shelby and Annette Williams Burston of Waco; two grandchildren, Jasmine Williams and Jala Williams of Charlotte; three nieces, Porcha Lockett of Shelby, Cheri Feaster of Kings Mountain and Anita Finandis of Germany; and five nephews, Broderickus Floyd, Wade Davis, Harry Floyd of Gastonia, James Junior Williams and Lebaron Burston of Waco.
The funeral will be Friday at 4 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church with Dr. James Montgomery officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the service.
Memorials may be made to Cleveland County Relay for Life through the American Cancer Society care of Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

William Mote
SHELBY - Mr. William Thomas Mote, 72, of 136 Dogwood Lane, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Sunnyside Nursing Center in Rutherfordton.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Anderson Mote and Rosa Mae Mote Lovelace. He was a retired fixer from Spindale Mills, where he worked for 20 years. He was a member of Landmark Baptist Church.
In additional to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Martha Jean Mote.
He is survived by his wife, Corrie J. Mote of Shelby; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dorothy Elizabeth Mote and Donald Shires of Jackson, S.C., and JoAn Mote and David Dear of Shelby; one son, J. Thomas Mote of East Ridge, Tenn.; one sister, Vera Sadler of Maryland; two grandsons, Donald J. Shires Jr. of Charlotte and Zachary Dear of Shelby; and one granddaughter, Megan Dear of Shelby.
The funeral will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Cleveland Funeral Services with the Rev. Donald Shires officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service and at other times at the home of David and JoAn Dear, 136 Dogwood Lane.

John Hands
CLEVELAND - Mr. John F. Hands, 69, formerly of Casar, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in Cleveland.
Born May 10, 1931, in Casar, he was the son of the late Jessie Sr. and Eunice Ussery Hands. Following his graduation from Douglas High School in Lawndale, he joined the Army as a gunner in Battalions Battery B from 1953 to 1954. He was honorably discharged on Nov. 1, 1954. He retired from Ford Motor Co. after 23 years of service. He was baptized at Union Bethal AME Church in Chagrin Falls, Ohio, in 1990.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Hands.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Inora Kee Hands; two sons and daughters-in-law, Cpl. Reginald Scott Sr. and Yolanda Hands or Okinawa, Japan, and Roger and Alice Phelps of Macon, Ga.; one grandson, Reginald Scott Hands Jr. of Okinawa; one sister and brother-in-law, Gladys H. and Jimmie Kee of Cleveland; two brothers, Jessie Hands Jr. of Detroit and Bennie Hands of Lawndale; one uncle, Hugh Hands of Roberta, Ga.; six aunts, Ruth Smith and Neita B. Foster, both of Detroit, Noami Griffin and Annie Mae Williams, both of Lawndale, Beatrice Atkinson of Chicago and Rosia Grisby of Cincinnati; godchildren, Eleenora Kelly-Pugh and her husband, Carl, Danny Kelly, William Kelly, Columbus Kelly and his wife, Linda, and Bruce Kelly, all of Cleveland; two sisters-in-law, Flora Hardin and Gladys Jenkins, both of Cleveland; two brothers-in-law, Willie F. Ward and Moses Thomas, both of Cleveland; and nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Monday, March 19, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Zion Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Cleveland.
Dockery's Home of Funerals, Inc., is in charge of local arrangements.

Anderson Ussery
LAWNDALE - Mr. Anderson Ussery, 66, of 120 Cotie Road, died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at Hospice of Cleveland County.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of the late Ernest and Elizabeth Green Ussery. He retired from General Motors after 31 years of service. He was a member of Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Ussery; two brothers, Andrew Ussery and Luther Johnson; and one sister, Pothine Ussery.
He is survived by his wife, Carrie Maddox Ruff Ussery of the home; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Anderson Jr. and Elika Ussery of Frankfort, Germany, Randy and Cynthia Ruff of Shelby and Johnny and Evelyn Ruff of Hickory; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Ussery of Suitland, Md., Linda Clark and Sonny Ussery and Melissa and T.C. Littlejohn, all of Lawndale, Joyce and the Rev. John Bullock of Valdese and Avis and Paul Lawrence Jr. of Hickory; five brothers and three sisters-in-law, Arthur Lee and Annie Mae Ussery of Lawndale, Henry and Rosie Ussery and Earnest Ussery Jr., all of Washington, D.C., Roy and Kelly Ussery of Mount Holly and Ray Ussery of Shelby; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Lillie U. Clark and James Lineberger of Dallas and Edith Sue Lawrence of Lawndale; one aunt, Vera Carey of Hickory; one uncle, Jeff Ussery of Hickory; a special friend, Chuck Ruff of Hickory; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Saturday at 3 p.m. at Pine Grove Primitive Baptist Church with Elder James Benton officiating.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends an hour before the service at the church.
