Tilden Putnam
SHELBY - Mr. Tilden F. Putnam, 83, of 401 N. Morgan St., died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at White Oak Manor in Shelby.
A native of Cleveland County, he was born the son of the late William Conley and Mary Elizabeth Poston Putnam. He was the retired owner of Putnam Electric Company. He was a member of Zoar Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Pruett Putnam; and one sister, Elizabeth Putnam Swann.
He is survived by two sons, David T. Putnam and his fiancee, Andrea Euvino, both of Raleigh and George R. Putnam of Atlanta; two daughters and one son-in-law, Deltha and Larry F. Sagehorn of Charlotte and Dorothy Putnam Collins of Mountainside, N.J.; two brothers, the Rev. Bryan Putnam of Reidsville and Thomas Putnam of Shelby; one granddaughter, Rhonda Blanton Smith of Asheville; six grandsons, Todd F. Blanton of Boiling Springs, Jeffry L. Beard of Indianapolis, Chris D. Putnam of Raleigh, Russell T. Putnam of Charlotte, Frank L. Bigelis Jr. of St. Joseph, Mo. and Steven M. Bigelis of Philadelphia; and one special friend, Janie Morrison.
A graveside service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park with the Rev. Richard Horney officiating.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and other times at 308 Seattle St., Shelby.

Cathy Radica
BLACKSBURG, S.C. - Mrs. Cathy Juanita Radica, 45, of 604 Hillcrest Drive, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at her residence.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at Cherokee Falls Missionary Fellowship with the Revs. Lucky Earls and Gregg Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Clingman Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at White Columns Funeral Service in Blacksburg and other times at the residence.

Clora Bess
GROVER - Mrs. Clora Harmon Bess, 87, of Long Branch Road, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Stamey Funeral Home in Fallston.

Adelaide Roberts
GASTONIA - Mrs. Adelaide Weaver Roberts, 80, of 1613 Fairfield Drive, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A native of Kings Mountain, she was the daughter of the late Buron Odus and Avalonia Hambright Weaver. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was retired from Gaston County Schools.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Warren H. Roberts Sr.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Warren H. Jr. and Robin Roberts of Dallas; one brother, O. Frederick Weaver of Kings Mountain; one sister, Myrtice Weaver of Gastonia; and one granddaughter, Laura Roberts of Dallas.
The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors in Gastonia with Dr. James Westmoreland officiating. Entombment will follow at Gaston Memorial Park Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Ola Allen
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Ola Harrill Allen, 91, of 726 Scruggs Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Autumn Care Nursing Home in Forest City.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Harrelson Funeral Home with the Revs. Trey Gilliam and Bob Philbeck officiating. Burial will follow at Holly Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at the funeral home.

Hubert Ruppe
CLIFFSIDE - Mr. Hubert L. Ruppe, 83, of 2175 Highway 221-A, died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at Rutherford Hospital.
A native of Piedmont, S.C., he was the son of the late Scott and Gen Self Ruppe. He was retired from Cone Mills Cliffside plant where he was the supply room overseer. He was a member of Cliffside Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school secretary for 50 years.
He is survived by his wife, Phrynia Ellis Ruppe of the home; two sons, Jerry Ruppe of Hickory and Jim Ruppe of Rutherfordton; one daughter, Shirley Stancil of Concord; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cliffside Baptist Church with Dr. Larry Gregg officiating. Burial will follow at Cliffside Cemetery.
The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8:30 at McKinney-Landreth Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Cliffside Baptist Church Building Fund, Box 336, Cliffside, N.C. 28024.

Lois Condrey
FOREST CITY - Mrs. Lois H. Condrey, 85, formerly of Alexander Mills, died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Rutherford Hospital.
The funeral was today at 11 a.m. at Alexander Baptist Church with the Rev. Tom Elkins officiating. Burial followed at Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery.
The family received friends today one hour before the service at the church.

Lillie Bell Hamrick
SHELBY - Mrs. Lillie Bell Gordon Hamrick, 98, of 2109 Cameo St., died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at Cleveland Pines Nursing Center.
A native of Rutherford County, she was the daughter of the late Lee and Fannie Lovelace Gordon. She was a homemaker and a member of Putnam Memorial Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cuber W. Hamrick.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, William Vaughn and Reba Hamrick of Forest City; two daughters and one son-in-law, Orene Smith of Kingsport, Tenn., and Imogene and Sidney McMurry of Shelby; one sister, Alma White of Hollis; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Putnam Memorial Baptist Church with the Revs. Bryan Glisson and Mark Canipe officiating. Burial will follow at Cleveland Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Saturday one hour before the service at the church.
Memorials may be made to Life Enrichment Center, 1270 Fallston Road, Shelby, N.C. 28150.

Herbert Addis
SHELBY - Mr. Herbert W. Addis, 85, of 419 E. Graham St., died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 1999, at White Oak Manor in Shelby.
A native of Cherokee County, S.C., he was the son of the late Hubert and Lula Addis. He was retired from Dover Mill. He was a member of Dover Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Lois Audry McCarver Addis; one son and daughter-in-law, Richard W. and Jane Addis of Shelby; one daughter, Tana Heath of Columbus, Ga.; two sisters, Louise Corbett and Daisy Hodges, both of Gaffney, S.C.; and two grandchildren, Richard W. Jr. and Beth Addis of Charlotte and Glisson and Glen Haney of Columbus, Ga.
A graveside service was held today at 1:30 p.m. at Sunset Cemetery with the Rev. Phil Bailey officiating.
The family received friends today from 10 to 11 a.m. at Lutz-Austell Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Dover Baptist Church, 1501 Polkville Road, Shelby, N.C. 28150.

Jasper Turner
SPINDALE - Mr. Jasper Lee Turner, 85, of 100 Williamsburg Drive, died Monday, Nov. 15, 1999, at Rutherford Hospital in Rutherfordton.
A native of Shelby, he was the son of the late Ola Martin and Moses Turner.
He earned his bachelor of science degree from Elizabeth City State University and his master's degree at Boston University. He taught at several colleges and universities and at his favorite, Fayetteville State University. His published research includes the following: The Role of Science in Child Development, The Quarterly Review of Higher Education Among Negroes, Vol. 35, July 1967; Some Defensible Objectives of a Language Arts Program, The Quarterly Review of Higher Education Among Negroes, Vol. 36, January 1968; Glossary for Desegregation, The Quarterly Review of Higher Education Among Negroes, Vol. 37, January 1969; Disputed: How to Educate, North Carolina Education, March, 1976; Blacks Must Do Well on Sills Test, The Charlotte Observer, March 1970; The Question of Meddling, The Fayetteville Observer; and Teaching is an Unmanageable Job That Needs Reform, The Fayetteville Observer, August 1983.
He was a veteran of World War II, during which he participated in the Central European and Rhineland and the European, Africa and Middle Eastern Campaigns. He was awarded the Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the American Theater Ribbon and the Good Conduct medal.
He is survived by one daughter, Sandra Turner Wilson of Toledo, Ohio; and one grandson, Kevin Tucker of Toledo.
The funeral will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Enloe Mortuary with the Rev. Bonnie Hines officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends Saturday one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Mary Ruth White
PERRY, Fla. - Mrs. Mary Ruth Oates Abrams White, 85, died Monday, Nov. 8, 1999, at Terry Nursing Home of Florida.
A native of Cleveland County, she was the daughter of the late Ellis and Cynthia Wilson Oates. She was a former member of Washington Baptist Church. Later she joined New Brooklyn Missionary Baptist Church, where she was active until her health failed.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Odis Abrams; two sisters, Flossie Raper and Myrtle Cornwell; and four brothers, Walter Oates, Lester Oates, Randell Oates and Clifton Oates.
She is survived by her husband, Veril White of Perry, Fla.; one godson, Edgar Abrams of New York; one sister, Nida Dewberry of Pineville, La.; one niece, Mary Jane Wilson; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
The funeral was Saturday, Nov. 13, at New Brooklyn Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed at Springfield Cemetery in Perry, Fla.
Evans Funeral Home of Perry, Fla., is in charge of arrangements.
Enloe's Mortuary is in charge of local arrangements.

Bob Brooks
RALEIGH - Mr. Bob Brooks died Thursday, Nov. 18, 1999, at Rex Hospital.
A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Liston Rex and Verdia Bridges Brooks. He was a graduate of Gardner-Webb College. He was a World War II veteran of the Marine Corps. He had retired from News & Observer where he was the managing editor.
He is survived by his wife, of 55 years, Dorris Cline Brooks; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Jr. and Jo and Raymond and Betty, all of Raleigh, and David and Ellen of Rocky Mount; one daughter and son-in-law, Liz and Bill Shaffer of Westport, Conn.; one brother, Boyd of Rutherfordton; one sister, Sadie Hendrix of Winston-Salem; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Raleigh. Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends today one hour before the service in the church parlor.
Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 99 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh, N.C. 27603.

GROVER - Mr. Ray William Turner, 72, of 620 Watterson Road, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at his residence.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Cecil M. Burton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Kenneth Mayhew Sr.
CHERRYVILLE - Mrs. Kenneth E. Mayhew Sr., 86, of 212 S. Mulberry St., died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.
A native of Cleveland County, she was born on July 9, 1913, the daughter of the late John N. and Josie Jolly Dellinger. She was a homemaker. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Cherryville, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was a former Girl Scout leader.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth E. Mayhew Sr.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth E. Jr. and Frances Mayhew of Cherryville; one daughter, Catherine Mayhew Day of Gastonia; one sister, Frances D. Beam of Shelby; three grandchildren, Catherine Mayhew Prince and her husband, Mark of Durham, Dr. Steven Day and his wife, Amalie of Spokane, Wash., and Charles Day of Mount Holly; and five great-grandchildren, Natalie Prince, Marsha Prince and Gregory Prince, all of Durham, Kenneth Day and Alison Day, both of Spokane.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Cherryville with the Rev. Kelley R. Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church Cemetery in Shelby.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth E. Mayhew Jr., 507 Spring St., Cherryville.

Mary Ellen Boyce
FOREST CITY - Ms. Mary Ellen Boyce, 72, died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999.
She was the daughter of the late Wells and Clara Davis Elliott. She was a member of Saint Paul AME.
She is survived by three sons, Cornelius L. Boyce of Fort Washington, Md., Edward H. Boyce of Rutherfordton and Marchall W. Boyce of Forest City; two daughters, Linda Myers of Spindale and Brenda Boyce of Forest City; a sister, Aileen Evans of Washington, D.C., and two brothers, Cornelius Mills of Washington and Ernest Elliott of Forest City.
The funeral will be Friday at 2 p.m. at Saint Paul AME in Forest City. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will follow at Wells Spring United Church Cemetery.

R.V. Degree
KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mr. R.V. Degree of 164 Ebenezer Road, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Cleveland Regional Medical Center.

Richard "Charlie" Ross
SHELBY - Mr. Richard Vayone "Charlie" Ross, 20, of 217 Shannonhouse St., died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999.
A native of Cleveland County, he was the son of Glenda R. Ross and James Willie Marion of Shelby. He attended Shelby City Schools.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Tierra Ross, Kierra Ross and Sierra Ross; his grandfather, Forrest B. Ross; and his stepfather, James R. Parker.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Sharon Miller Ross of the home; his grandparents, Frances H. Ross of Shelby and Annie Willie Bines of Henrietta; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jerome and Peggy Roseboro of Kings Mountain; one son, Tyvine Vayone Ross of the home; one daughter, Omniniesha Allison of the home; nine brothers, Jackie L. Ross and Forrest J. Ross, both of the home, Jamie Marion, Jimmy Marion, James Marion, Timothy Marion, Terris Parker and Datrome Parker, all of Shelby, Anthony Parker of Boiling Springs; and nine sisters, Donish Ross, Lafrea Ross, Jessica Ross, Danadia Ross and Chelsey Parker, all of the home, Sherisa Marion, Sheita Marion, Tamatha Littlejohn and Sherieka Surratt, all of Shelby; and his godmother, Wanda L. Marion of Shelby.
The funeral will be Friday at 3 p.m. at Westside Praise and Worship Center with the Rev. Donagrant L. McCluney officiating. Burial will follow at Webb Memorial Lawns.
The family will receive friends Friday 30 minutes before the service at the church.

LAWNDALE - Mrs. Minnie Norman Grigg, 97, of 209 Hicks Hill Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at Pell Care of Hickory.

Willie Maner
NEW LONDON - Mr. Willie Herman Maner, 87, of 40129 Airport Road, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at Concord Nursing Center in Concord.
The funeral will be today at 2 p.m. at Prospect Baptist Church with the Revs. Ed Lowder and Glenn Johnson officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
