HART
Ruby Hester Hart, 93, left our earthly presence on Monday, July 31, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. Born April 12, 1907, in Winston-Salem to James Cicero and Georgieanna Hillard Hester. She was a homemaker and wife of 72 years to Masten Stanley Hart who died last year. Her spiritual roots were established as a child in Home Moravian Church with an unending love for the Salem community. She was a charter member of Trinity Friends Church in Lewisville. A son, Richard Stanley Hart preceded her in death. Surviving are two daughters, Anna Bracey and husband Richard of Montezuma and Joan Grant and husband Thomas of Kernersville; a son, Gene Hart and wife Joy of Winston-Salem; a daughter-in-law, Violet Hart of Lexington; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-granddchildren; three beloved sisters, Margaret Stephenson of Fieldale, Va., Juanita (Charles) Hypes of New Lebanon, Ohio , and Ruth (Dean) Beck of Winston-Salem; a brother, Howard Hester of Winston-Salem; and devoted friends, Nancy Stith and Ethelene Bartee of the Brian Center. An extended graveside service will be held by the Rev. Jack Nance at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens on High Point Road at 11 a.m. Wednesday. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

HUNTER
Mr. Mark Luther Hunter, 40, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, July 30, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital as a result of an automobile accident. He was born March 6, 1960, in Wilmington, Del., to Don T. and Ruth Hicks Hunter. Mr. Hunter spent most of his life in North Carolina. He graduated from Andrews High School in High Point and was a member of Archdale Jaycees. He attended Victory Baptist Church and was with the N.C. Department of Transportation for several years. He was also associated with Royal Majestic Coach Limousine Service. Surviving are his wife, Renee Boles Hunter of the home; three daughters, Krystal, Mellisa and Meghan Hunter; his mother and father of High Point; a number of nieces and nephews; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Norman and Barbara Boles of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Mike Duffield officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

JAMES
Mrs. Dorothy Rehfuss James, 93, a resident of Salemtowne/The Moravian Retirement Community, Winston-Salem, died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Nov. 27, 1906, in Philadelphia to W. Fred and Emma Rehfuss Ford. Mrs. James was a member of Home Moravian Church, Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Paul M. James and a son, Dr. Paul Marshall James Jr. Survivors include her son, Dr. Francis Marshall James III and wife Adele Lacy James of Winston-Salem; a daughter-in-law, Cindy James of Holts Summit, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Paul Marshall James III of Winston-Salem, Kent McIntyre James of Washington, Pa., Randall Lewis James of Maplewood, N.J., Capt. Stuart Martin James of Fort Knox, Ky., Adele Lacy James of New York, N.Y., Dr. Martha Love of Los Angeles and Francis Marshall James IV of Winston-Salem; a sister, Emma Rice of Brant Beach, N.J.; and nine grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Founds Funeral Home, 229 S. High St., West Chester, Pa. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Oakland Cemetery in West Chester. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Salemtowne/The Moravian Retirement Community, 3000 Salemtowne Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

MATTHEWS
Mrs. Ada Evelyn Sutherland Matthews, 84, died Friday, July 28, 2000, at her home. She was born in Comers Rock, Va., to the late Floyd and Nora Sutherland. She retired from Pellcare Nursing Facility in 1975, was a homemaker for her entire family and was of the Baptist faith. Preceding her in death were her husband, Johna Staples Matthews, in December 1979; son Milburn ''Pete'' Staples Matthews; grandson Johna Edward White; sister Pinkie Bowman; and brothers Charlie, Hubert and Verlin Sutherland. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Nelda and Clyde White of the home; brother Oscar Sutherland of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Tony White (Laura) and Teresa D'Avi (James), all of Winston-Salem, Vicky Burbank (Tony) of Walnut Cove and Amanda Throckmorton (Tracy) of Pilot Mountain; and great-grandchildren Jessica, Kimberly, Ben, Sabrina, Kayla, Taylor, Allie, Cody, Damon and Dalton. A 4 p.m. funeral service will be held Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Gardens of Memory, Walkertown.

MINTON
CHARLOTTE -- James Ira Minton, 70, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, at his home. A funeral service to celebrate his life will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, at McEwen Pineville Chapel. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Born Oct. 10, 1929, in Surry County, Mr. Minton was a son of the late R.C. and Rebecca Dowell Minton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean conflict. Mr. Minton had been associated with the K&W Cafeterias in Winston-Salem and Roanoke, Va., before coming to Pineville. He was the owner of J&K Cafeteria in Pineville. He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor and as a wonderful and loving friend, husband, father, grandfather and uncle. Mr. Minton is survived by his wife of 46 years, Kapuzinia S. Minton; three children, Debby Profet of Charlotte, Amy Newman of Fort Mill, S.C., and Wayne Minton of Monroe. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Jenny Profet, Katie Newman, Will Newman, Lyndsay Minton and Cameron Minton; a brother, Fred Minton of Concord; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Minton was preceded in death by a grandson, Ryan Profet; five brothers; and two sisters. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to Hospice of Charlotte, 1420 E. Seventh St., Charlotte, NC 28204 or the Make a Wish Foundation, 3000 Industrial Drive, Raleigh, NC 27609. Arrangements by McEwen Funeral Service Pineville Chapel.

MORPHIS
Henry V. ''Pete'' Morphis, 71, of 3505 Plaza Hollow Drive died July 31, 2000, at Baptist Hospital. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street Funeral Home.

NEWELL
CHARLOTTE -- Margaret B. Newell, 78, of Sunset Beach and Charlotte died Monday, July 31, 2000, at Sunrise at Eastover. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m. in Sharon Memorial Park. The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Charlotte Chapel of McEwen Funeral Service. Ms. Newell was born in Winston-Salem Nov. 8, 1921, daughter of the late Walter Grey Brewer Sr. and Ester E. Hanes Brewer. She was a graduate of Draughn's School of Business and was employed with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board where she served as Chief of Finance until her retirement. Margaret was also very civic-minded serving as past president of the LaSertona Club of Winston-Salem and past president of the Quota Club of Charlotte. Ms. Newell was also preceded in death by her brother, Walter G. Brewer Jr. Survivors include a son, J. Michael Newell of Charlotte; daughter Pat Newell of Charlotte; son, Marc Brewer Newell of Kings Mountain; brother Robert Lee Brewer of Newton; three grandsons, Michael Scott and Darren Eugene Newell both of Charlotte and Andrew Phifer Newell of Raleigh; and several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Presbyterian Hospice, c/o Presbyterian Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 33549, Charlotte, NC 28233. NURENBERG
Marta Del Torto Nurenberg, 87. Marta passed away peacefully in her son's arms at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July 27, 2000, after complications from surgery. Fittingly she died on the 65th wedding anniversary of her marriage to the late Edward C. Nurenberg. Marta was born in New York City on Sept. 19, 1912, the last of five children born to Maria Gracia Vacarro and Donato Del Torto. She was raised in New Rochelle, N.Y., and Port Chester, N.Y., where she graduated from Port Chester High School in 1930. After graduation she worked as a legal secretary at Sealtest until her marriage in 1935. Her husband was with General Motors Overseas division and they lived abroad for many years, Sao Paulo, Brazil (1944-1959), Paris, France (1959-1962) and Bern, Switzerland (1962-1965). Upon her husband's retirement in 1965, they lived in Greenwich, Conn., until 1984 when they moved to Winston-Salem. She was buried on Saturday, July 29, at Old Salem beside her beloved Ed with a simple service celebrating her life and attended by only close friends and family, as was her wish. Two sons and two granddaughters, Robert D. Nurenberg of Winston-Salem and his daughter, Maria Nicole Korejko-Nurenberg of Vancouver, B.C., and Donald E. Nurenberg and his daughter, Leah of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., survive her. Her sister, Mary Grace Vacarro, 93, of Raleigh and innumerable nieces and nephews also survive her. As she often said, ''I've had a charmed life that exceeded all my dreams and expectations.'' She lived her life with tremendous zest that was tempered by an amazing capacity for love, compassion and exquisite charm combined with great humility, as she never could quite understand why God had showered her with so many blessings. Her family is consoled by the fact that she is at last free of all pain and at one with God and the man she loved so deeply from the day they first met on Dec. 16, 1932, at the 114th Street subway station in New York.

RIDGE
Mrs. Martha ''Lou'' Presnell Ridge, 79, of Winston-Salem died at her home on Saturday, July 29, 2000, after a period of declining health. A native of Surry County, she was born May 23, 1921, to the late William Clarkson and Laura Lee Patterson Presnell. Martha was a graduate of Pilot Mountain High School, class of 1938, and served in the U.S. Navy, New Orleans Postal Unit, during World War II. She was a longtime resident of Rural Hall. While raising her children, she was very active in the Brownies and Cub Scout organizations. She was also a volunteer with the Rural Hall Fire Dept. Auxiliary. Mrs. Ridge was preceded in death by her loving husband, James E. Ridge, on May 21, 1996; two sisters, Nancy Rutledge and Mary Lipford; and one brother, Paul Presnell. She is survived by two daughters, Jamie Lee Ridge of Winston-Salem and Laura R. Sinclair of Beaufort; one son, ''Bugs'' Ridge of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; two grandchildren, Eddy Ridge of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Dr. Marty Edwards of Mocksville; one great-grandson, Zachary Edwards; one brother, John Presnell of Cleveland, Ohio; two sisters, Willie Lynch of Winston-Salem and Geneva Lang of Whitesville, W.Va.; and several nieces and nephews. Private funeral services were conducted. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Women in Military Service Memorial Fund, Dept. 560, Washington, D.C. 20042-0560. RODGERS
ADVANCE -- Marshall Charles Rodgers of Bermuda Run, Advance, passed away July 29, 2000, in Birmingham, Ala. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; a daughter, Dr. Leslie R. Laufman of Columbus, Ohio; a son, Dr. Grayson Rodgers of Birmingham, Ala.; three grandchildren, Hal, Holly and Grayson III; and a sister, Jean Hall of Camp Hill, Pa. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, at First Presbyterian Church, Cherry Street, Winston-Salem. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Baptist Hospice of Shelby County, Double Oak Medical Plaza, 5420 Highway 280 E., Suite C., Birmingham, AL 35242.
