BOYLES
KING -- Doris Jean Smith Boyles, 63, of Chestnut Grove Road died Thursday, March 30, 2000, at Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a lengthy illness. She was born Aug. 6, 1936, in Stokes County to Alvie Virona and Addie Ruth Baker Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. ''Jay'' Boyles in 1985. Doris was a member of First Baptist Church in King. She received a GED from Forsyth Technical Community College and was retired from the Skilled Nursing Facility of Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital after 14 years of service. Surviving are two daughters, Sandy (Joe) Parker of Lewisville and Donna Boyles of King; two sons, Michael Boyles, special caregiver to his mother, of the home and Jimmy (Cindy) Boyles of Westfield; four grandchildren, Timmy Boyles, Ashton Boyles, Stacey Sherron and Jordan Parker; a sister, Linda (Joe) Cox of Rural Hall and a brother, Dean (Margaret) Smith of King. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Slate Funeral Home Chapel with Lamar Tillman, minister , and the Rev. Guy Hunt officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Olive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Slate Funeral Home in King.

BYRD
LEXINGTON -- Gladys Ethel Owens Byrd, 86, of 355 Mount Carmel Road, Lexington, died March 30, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital. The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Sunday at Christ Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roger Weisner, the Rev. Clyde Akers and the Rev. Bruce Langley. Burial will be in Forest Hill Memorial Park. Mrs. Byrd was born Aug. 4, 1913, in Claiborn County, Tenn. , to John W. Owens and Cordie Gibbons Owens. She was a resident of Davidson County most of her life and was a retired employee of Erlanger Mills and Wynonia Mills with more than 30 years of service. She was a member of Christ Chapel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the U M W and the Carrie Clayton Bible - school class. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Doris B. and James Heitman of Lexington; two sons and daughters-in-law, Carl W. and Betty J. Byrd of Mauldin, S.C., and Gary M. and Mildred Byrd of Mechanicsville, Va.; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and eight stepgreat-great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday night at Piedmont Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Memorials may be made to Christ Chapel United Methodist Church, 316 Northside Drive, Lexington, N.C. 27295.

CHARLES
MOCKSVILLE -- Mr. Carl S. Charles, 77, of 186 Joy Trail died suddenly Thursday, March 30, 2000, at his home. Mr. Charles was born Dec. 9, 1912, in Forsyth County, a son of the late Jacob H. and Kezie Hedrick Charles. Mr. Charles served in the 873rd Airborne division of the U.S. Army during World Wa r II. He was a former employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was owner and operator of Longview Grocery in Winston-Salem before his retirement. He was a member of Pine Chapel Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, where he had served his church in numerous capacities over the years. He was also active with the Senior Friends group at Pine Chapel. In addition to his parents, Mr. Charles was preceded in death by an infant son, Larry Eugene Charles; a sister, Alma Charles Chapple; and a brother, Clyde Bruce Charles. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mrs. Norma Hemrick Charles of the home; a daughter, Carol C. Taylor and husband Jim of Gastonia; a son, Norm and wife Elizabeth Charles of Mocksville; grandchildren Stacey C. Bunch and husband W.G. of Houston and Eric C. Taylor of Gastonia; and a sister, Mrs. Myrtle C. Ashley of East Bend. The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 2, 2000, at Pine Chapel Moravian Church, 324 Goldfloss St., Winston-Salem. The Rev. Matthew Allen will officiate, assisted by the Rev. George Chiddie. Interment will be in Salem Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Vogler and Sons Main Street Chapel and suggests that memorials be made to the Kitchen Fund, Pine Chapel Moravian Church, 324 Goldfloss St., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27127.

COOK
Mr. William J. ''Bill'' Cook Jr., 74, of Lewisville died Thursday, March 30, 2000 , at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 26, 1925 , in Clemmons to William Jarvis Sr. and Clara Snider Cook. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Elbert Grey Cook and J. Frank Cook. Mr. Cook was of the Baptist faith. He served on the USS Chenango in the Pacific Theater in World War II. He is survived by his wife, Etta Payne Adams of the home; a daughter, Kathy C. Taylor of East Bend; a stepdaughter, Patty Kennedy of Winston-Salem; a son, Timothy O. Cook of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Edith Cook Plaster of Winston-Salem and Margaret Cook Williams of Greenville, S.C. Special thanks to Dr. Susan Yuson, Forsyth Home Health Nurses (Tina, Jennie and Ann), also Ginger and Dana. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel with burial to follow at Clemmons First Baptist Church Cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 3109 Poplarwood Court, Suite 125, Raleigh, N C 27604-1043.

COPP
Mrs. Jessie Nail Copp, 90, of Winston-Salem, formerly of Mobile, Ala., died Friday, March 31, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. A graveside service will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. at Pine Crest Cemetery in Mobile.

CORDON
NEW YORK -- James Telfair Cordon Jr. of New York died after a hard-fought battle with cancer Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at the New York University Hospital Center in New York City. James, a son of Matilda Ehringhaus Cordon of Winston-Salem and the late James T. Cordon and grandson of the late Gov. J.C. B. Ehringhaus, received his undergraduate degree at North Carolina State University and a master's degree in broadcasting from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. James worked for NBC Radio and Television for nearly 20 years as a project engineer and contributed to the success of many major broadcast events, including an award performance for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and coverage of many political conventions and national elections. His friends and colleagues in the broadcast world pay tribute to his intellect and his kind and gentle nature. He was always a pleasure to work with and will be greatly missed. In addition to his mother in Winston-Salem, he is survived by his brother, John Christoph Ehringhaus Cordon of Houston ; his sister, Matilda Cordon Skoggard of Winston-Salem; and his many close friends in New York City. A graveside service will be at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in Pittsboro Wednesday, April 5, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cure for Lymphoma Foundation, 215 Lexington Ave., 11th Floor, New York, N.Y. 1 0016 or the New York University Hospital Hematology Fund, N.Y.U. Hospital Center, 550 First Ave., New York, N.Y. 10016.

Mr. Dominick Henry Grillo, 80, of Valleybrook Lane, Winston-Salem , passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2000, at Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. The f uneral will be Monday, April 3, 2000, in Manhasset, N.Y. The family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

HAILEY
Mr. Thomas (Buck) Charles Hailey Jr., 79, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, March 30, 200 0, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born July 6, 1920 , in Forsyth County to Thomas Charles Hailey Sr. and Pearl Jackson Hailey. Mr. Hailey was retired from the N.C. State Highway Commission as chief inspector with 39 years of service. He was a veteran of World War II , serving in the Army Air Corp s in the Southwest Pacific. He was a former member of Fairview Moravian Church. Surviving are his wife, Wyndolin (Wendy) Young Hailey of the home; two sons, Thomas Charles Hailey III and James (J.D.) Daryl Hailey, both of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Candace Hailey Marshall and husband Ralph of High Point; four grandchildren, Steve Marshall, Joey Marshall, Kim Staley and Sharon Smith ; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens with military rites by the District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. MIDWAY - Ray Michael Hill Sr., 78, of Ridge Road died Friday, March 31, 2000 , at Lexington Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday , conducted by the Rev. Harry Sellars Jr. at Midway United Methodist Church where he was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Hill was born May 18, 1921 , in Davidson County to Elmer C. Hill and Lillie Elizabeth Sowers Hill. He was a retired farmer and a retired member of the Midway Fire Department and served in the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Faith Elizabeth Hine Hill. Surviving, in addition to his mother of Lexington, are his wife, Pergie Catherine Nations Hill of the home; a son, Ray Michael Hill Jr. and his wife , Glenna , of Clemmons; daughters Barbara Ellen Niflong and her husband , Lamarr , of Lexington, Nancy Elizabeth Gibbons and her husband , Bill , of Woodleaf; step daughters, Penny Moose and Susan Kepley, both of Lexington; grandchildren David, Johnny , JoAnn, Sonda and Gina; great-grandchildren Chasity, Erin, Logan and Katie; brothers Glenn Hill and Bruce Hill, both of Lexington; and sisters Mary Tesh and Edna Snider, both of Lexington. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel.

KEITH
On Tuesday morning, the Lord called his child, Ms. Nadine Stephanie Evans-Keith of 2770 Piedmont Circle, formerly a resident of Cleveland Avenue , home. Ms. Keith, 38, passed after an extended illness at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. Nadine was born Dec. 11, 1961 , in Winston-Salem to Evelyn H. Evans and the late Alphonso Evans. Diane J. Hough, a sister , and Juanita Geter, an aunt, preceded her in death. She leaves behind her two sons, Sherman L. Keith Jr. and Ernest Donte Keith; her mother , Evelyn H. Evans; a brother, Ernest J. Hough; sisters Moneice (Clarence) Crumpton, Charlotte (Ronnie) Covington and Gloria (James) Evans ; a devoted niece, Bridgette Hough; aunts Lannie (Larry) Wilson of Oxford and Deloise Payen of Newark, N.J.; uncles June (Marie) Hough and Tommy Hough; special cousins Barbara Lyons and Diane Garner ; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and a devoted friend, Roderick ''Rolo'' Holiday. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Frances S. & Jerry C. Gilmore Memorial Chapel where the Rev. J.B. Whitfield and the Rev. Tony Tilton will officiate. Burial will follow at Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 2:30 p.m. at the chapel. Arrangements entrusted to and services will be conducted by Gilmore Funeral Home.
