BERRIER
MOUNT AIRY -- Mr. Robert James ''R.J.'' Berrier, 69, of 347 W. Pine St. passed away Thursday, June 29, 2000, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Berrier was born in Surry County Sept. 30, 1930, the son of Garland Houston and Kizzie Adeline Berrier. He had been in the newspaper business since 1948, when he went to work for the weekly Mount Airy Times, which was published by Robert Edward ''Punch'' Ashby and W.J. Seigler. The Mount Airy News bought the Times in 1979. He went to work at the Times at 9 a.m., June 14, 1948. Only an hour or so later, Ashby's son, Robert Edward ''Buddy'' Ashby Jr., was killed in the crash of a Piper Cub plane at Idlewild, the family plantation on Piper's Gap Road. While he was editor of the Times, in 1969, the North Carolina Press Association gave him a first-place award in editorials for the one he wrote about the slaying of two Pilot Mountain police officers. He had also earlier won a third-place press award for an editorial and the Times had also won awards from the N.C. Press Association. One of the most popular columns he wrote while at the Times was ''Mount Airy After Midnight,'' which recounted law-enforcement activities in the area after midnight. The column ran for 20 or 25 years and everything in the column actually happened after midnight. Rules were less stringent then, and he was allowed to ride with Mount Airy police officers, Surry County sheriff's deputies and State Highway Patrolmen while they were on patrol. The fire that destroyed Flat Rock Elementary School in 1957, claiming two lives, was the most spectacular story he said he had covered during his lengthy career. He was in the Army from 1952 to 1954 and thus missed covering the fire in 1953 that destroyed Martin Memorial Hospital. He graduated from Mount Airy High School, going to work at the Times two weeks later. He was involved in newspaper reporting during his two years in the Army during the Korean conflict, working on the Times when he came home on furlough and weekends and also writing a couple of publications at Camp (now Fort) Gordon, Ga. He was a charter member of the Mount Airy Jaycees, which restarted here in 1954 after being discontinued in 1941 because of World War II. For years he was a member of the board of directors of the old Surry County Tuberculosis Association, served on the Salvation Army advisory board when the Salvation Army Citadel was built in the 1960s and had been a member of the Mount Airy Library board since 1976, serving as secretary, vice-chairman and, for several years, as chairman. He had been a member of Trinity Episcopal Church for many years. Berrier was extremely interested in Mount Airy history and for many years wrote a history story appearing in Sunday's issue of The Mount Airy News . His interest in history was second only to his love of the English language. He always stressed to young reporters the importance of spelling, as well as proper paragraphing and punctuation. He is survived by two nephews, Wayne Berrier of Clemmons and John Berrier of Ararat, Va.; a great-nephew, Chase Berrier of Rural Hall; and several cousins. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 2, 2000, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Wylie Miller. Burial will follow in the Oakdale Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home on Sunday one hour before the service. Flowers should be omitted and memorials made to the Mount Airy Public Library, 145 Rockford St., Mount Airy, NC 27030 or to the Trinity Episcopal Church, 472 N. Main St., Mount Airy, NC 27030.
