KISER
KING -- Mr. Cletus Clifton Kiser, 96, of E. King St. died Friday, March 31, 2000, after being in declining health for about a year. He was born Oct. 2, 1903, in Stokes County to Luvene Jackson and Martha Slate Kiser. He was a member of First Baptist Church in King. Clete retired from the NCDMV Weight Division and later he and his wife, Edna , opened and operated Kiser's Korner Gift Shop in King for several years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Burge Kiser , in 1997. He is survived by a number of nieces, nephews, and several great-nieces and nephews, along with many close friends. Graveside services will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, April 3, in King Memorial Park with the Rev. Jack Borders officiating. The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Slate Funeral Home in King. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 481, King, N.C. 27021.

KOONTZ
Mr. Douglas J.rod Koontz, 84, of 601 Arbor Road passed away Friday, March 31, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born July 20, 1915, to Fred Douglas and Maude Biesecker Koontz. Mr. Koontz graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill with a bachelor's degree in commerce. He started his career over 30 years ago with Wachovia Bank and retired as an assistant vice president. Mr. Koontz was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, served as the president of his Sunday school class, and was a member of the SEVENTY. Mr. Koontz was an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife, Maxine Leonard Koontz of the home; two sons, Joseph J.rod Koontz of the home and Kurt Koontz and wife Beverly of High Point. Also surviving are four brothers, Ed Koontz of Welcome, Corl Koontz of Lexington, James Koontz of Asheboro, and Jack Koontz of Boone; a sister, Maxine Bowman of Greensboro; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, at Vogler's Reynolda Road Chapel. The family will receive friends Monday, April 3, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 West 5th St., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101.

BASSETT
CHARLOTTE -- Mr. Dean Franklin Bassett, 78, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at his home in Charlotte. Born in Charlotte on Jan. 10, 1922, Mr. Bassett was a son of the late Albert Franklin Bassett and Janie Garrison Bassett. He graduated from Berryhill High School and served in the 15th U.S. Air Force 485th Bomb Group during World War II. Mr. Bassett, a retired dairy farmer, volunteer fireman and City of Charlotte employee, was a lifelong member of Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church and served as deacon, elder, elder emeritus and Sunday - school class president. He was also a member of the Steele Creek Athletic Association, Steele Creek American Legion Post No. 221 and volunteered with Loaves and Fishes , and Boy Scouts of America. Survivors include his daughter, Jo Beth Melton and her husband, Randy; two grandsons, Trent and Cameron Melton , all of Lewisville; a sister, Carrie Bassett Shelton of Southern Pines; and a brother, John S. Bassett and wife Helen of Deltona, Fla. Mr. Bassett was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Katherine Bassett; two sisters, Charlee Bassett Freeman and Mary Bassett Casper; and a brother, Harvey H. Bassett. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, June 2 , at Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. James R.M. Young officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Special thanks are expressed to Hospice of Charlotte and to two special ladies, his caregivers, Mary White and Mae Grier. Memorials may be made to Central Steele Creek Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 410054, Charlotte, NC 28241; Steele Creek Athletic Association, 13530 Choate Circle, Charlotte, NC 28273; or to Olympic High School Athletic Department, 4301 Sandy Porter Road, Charlotte NC 28273. BREWER
Mrs. Pearl Phelps Brewer, 83, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, June 1, 2000 , at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Aug. 9, 1916 , in Davie County to Uriah H. and Irene Sheek Phelps. Mrs. Brewer was a charter member of Griffith Baptist Church, a charter member of The Crickett's Nest and a past member of Griffith Home Demonstration Club. Mrs. Brewer enjoyed her arts and crafts. Two things she loved most were her grandchildren and walking along the beach. She was a friend to all and never met a stranger. Even during her lengthy illness she was granted one request that she would never have to go to a nursing home. She was preceded in death by her husband , James ''Ed'' Brewer; a grandson, Matthew Brewer ; and four brothers, Bill, Grover, Bob and Ralph Phelps. She is survived by three daughters, Eva Tuttle and husband Wiley of Winston-Salem, Eula Sapp and husband Gary of Kernersville , and Irene Freeman and husband Raymond of Badin Lake; two sons, Jim Brewer and wife Gail of Winston-Salem , and Butch Brewer and wife Barbara of Winston-Salem ; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eloise Wall of Clemmons and Gladys Gullett of Morganton ; and a brother, Bud Phelps of Lewisville. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Griffith Baptist Church by the Rev. Tony Brown and the Rev. Harry Goble. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1101-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Alzheimer's Association, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.

DAVIS
Mrs. Gladys Davis Davis, 92, died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Britthaven of Wilkesboro. She was born March 20, 1908, in Davie County to Joseph Wesley and Mary Ada Shaw Davis. Mrs. Davis was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom T. Davis; a son, Dallas Wayne Davis; two sisters, Annie Clair Reavis and Margaret Louise Foster; and two brothers, William Howard Davis and John Wesley Davis. Surviving are a daughter, Thomasene Hauser and husband Jack of Winston-Salem; a son, William Joseph Davis and wife Marilyn of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Ann Potts Davis of Farmington and Viola Crews Davis of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Dr. Worth Green. Burial will be at Advance United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service.

EVANS
Mr. Dwight Elliot Evans, 42, of 1600 E. 25th St. passed away Sunday, May 28, 2000, at the Forsyth Medical Center after a period of illness. He was a native and resident of Winston-Salem and was of the Baptist faith. He was a former employee of Salem Laundry. He was preceded in passing by his father, Charles Sadler and his grandmother, Rosetta Evans. He is survived by two sons, Kenneth O'Neil and Dwight Reid both of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren; his mother, Mary Evans McMillian of Winston-Salem; his stepfather, Clarence McMillian; four sisters, Camille (Ben) McClary, Michelle Foster, Rosetta (Ray) Horton all of Winston-Salem and Sonja McMillian of Raleigh; three brothers, Clarence (Valerie) McMillian, Charles Sadler Jr. and Keith (Kenyatta) Speas all of Winston-Salem; three special aunts, Delois Estes, Betty Ann Harvey and Christine Evans; a devoted friend, Alma Barber; a family friend, Daniel Mitchell; and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, June 3, 2000, from the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home, with Bishop Joseph Lowery officiating. Internment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at Russell Funeral Home. (Russell)

FOSTER
Mr. Irving Cope Foster, 80, of Winston-Salem passed away Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Dec. 7, 1919, in Davie County to Franklin Kerr and Beulah Cope Foster. Mr. Foster graduated from Clemmons High School in 1938 and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Corps, having served during World War II. He was a very active member of Hanes United Methodist Church in all aspects. He loved his volunteer work at Arbor Acres for many years. He was retired from Hanes Knitting Corp., with 43 years of service, and worked with Beroth Oil Co. (Four Brothers) for a number of years. He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas J. Foster. Surviving are his loving wife of 50 years, Elsie Hartman Foster of the home; two brothers, Phil Foster and wife Betty of Clemmons and Frank and wife Irene Foster of Lewisville; a sister, Pauline Slaydon of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Hanes United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Sparks, the Rev. Don Ashe and the Rev. Doug Suggs officiating. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park. Mr. Foster will lie in state at the church 30 minutes before the service. Memorials may be made to Hanes United Methodist Church, 402 Harvey St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

HEMMINGS
Mr. Herman Richard Hemmings died Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Hemmings was born July 19, 1912, in Surry County to John Franklin and Mallie Doby Hemmings. He was a member of Matthews Church of Christ, an active Mason of Lodge 167 Winston-Salem, and supported the Oxford Orphanage. Mr. Hemmings retired from R.J. Reynolds with 40 years of service. His wife, Martha Elizabeth Hatcher Hemmings, preceded him in death; also a brother, John D. Hemmings. Surviving are a son, Richard L. Hemmings of Clemmons; a grandchild, Graham Hemmings of Oak Ridge; two brothers, Clinton Hemmings and Harry Hemmings both of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Opal Hemmings of Yadkinville and Lewana Huffman of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2000, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. HOLLAND
CANA, Va. -- Mr. Harvey Blum Holland, 68, of 772 Epworth Church Road, Cana, widower of Clara Marie ''Boots'' Helms Holland passed away Thursday, June 1, 2000, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Holland was born in Sampson County on Aug. 31, 1931, son of the late Joel C. and Ola Catherine Tyndall Holland. He was a licensed optician in North Carolina for many years, having owned an operated Holland's Opticians Inc., and was a member of Haymore Baptist Church. Mr. Holland was also a member of the Granite Masonic Lodge #322 AF & AM, having served as treasurer for many years, was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Scottish Rites of Freemasonry, a member of Oasis Temple of the Shriners, member of the Order of the Eastern Star (Mount Airy Chapter) and a lifetime member of the Surry Shrine Club. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Renee and Randy Richmond of Huntersville; a sister, Katherine Benoy of Charlotte; a brother and sister-in-law, Herman C. and Lorena Holland of Mount Airy; two nieces; a nephew; a great-niece; two great-nephews; and special friends, Pete and Hattie Cain of Cana. The funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday, June 4, at Haymore Memorial Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Robert McCrary, with entombment in Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum, with full Masonic rites conducted by Granite Masonic Lodge #322 AF & AM. The family will receive friends Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the service.

JONES
Mrs. Lina Mae Cagle Jones, 92, of Cana, Va., widow of William Lissie Jones, died Wednesday, May 31, 2000 at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Jones was born in Carroll County, Va., on Aug. 24, 1907, to the late Alfred Cagle and Eda Woods Cagle. She was a homemaker and a member of Oak Ridge Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Faye Hardigree of Cana, Va. and Helen and Eddie Vaughn of Cana, Va.; seven sons and daughters-in-law, Franklin and Forrest Jones of Cana, Va., Berna and Elza Jones of Winston-Salem, Herman and Edith Jones, Odell and Maggie Jones, Perry and Ida Jones, Lynwood and Lorraine Jones and Donald and Mary Jones, all of Cana, Va.; 37 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; five step grandchildren and seven step great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by three sons, Namon Jones, Junior Jones and Harlie Jones; a daughter, Lorraine Willard; three sisters, Rozella Hawks, Milie Edwards and Lizzie Newman and two brothers, Fred Cagle and William Cagle. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oak Ridge Baptist Church with services conducted by the Rev. David Sechrist and the Rev. James Jones (grandson). Burial in the Jones Family Cemetery in Cana, Va. The family will receive friends at Moody Funeral Home Friday night from 7 to 9 p.m. where her body will remain until time to be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jones Family Cemetery, c/o Helen Vaughn, 165 Epworth Road, Cana, Va. 24317 or Cana Rescue Squad, Cana, Va. 24317.
