MOCKSVILLE -- Funeral services for Mrs. Hester Scott Hunter will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Graham Funeral Home in Mocksville. The Rev. Robert Bailey and Pastor Nettye I. Barber will officiate. Burial will be in Mainville AME Zion Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service. (Graham)

JOE
Mr. Charlie Lee Joe II of 51 Robinhood Circle passed away Saturday, Sept. 2, 2000, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native of this city and a retired employee with Westinghouse and presently operation manager with Twin City Warehouses. Mr. Joe was a member of Friendship Baptist Church where he was a trustee, church treasurer and a member of the Laymen League and Friendship Married Couples. He was a board member of the Winston-Salem Churches in Ministry, chairman of SIFT, board member of CIAA Officials Hall of Fame, CIAA Official and North State Football Association. Mr. Joe was a former Westinghouse Loan Executive for the United Way of Forsyth County and a former board member of the Forsyth Cancer Services. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mrs. Ether Sims Joe of the home; two children, Erica L. Joe-Baker (Jay) of Rural Hall and Charlie L. Joe III of Durham; two grandchildren, Jada Shalome Baker and Iyon Manesseh Baker, both of Rural Hall; his mother, Julia Scales of California; his father, Charlie Joe (Elizabeth) of Florida; four sisters, Betty M. Watson (Lorenzo) and Roberta Joe, both of Winston-Salem, Sandra Gibbs (Terry) of California and Bernadette Madoux (Daryl) of Maryland; five brothers, William Pickens, Johnny Joe and Larry Joe (Pam), all of Winston-Salem, Willie Lane of Ohio and Raynard Joe (Diane) of New Jersey; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at the Friendship Baptist Church with the Rev. S.E. Tydall officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon to lie in state until the service hour with public viewing only during the period of family visitation from 1 to 2. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the WSSU Nursing Scholarship Program or to Friendship Baptist Church Library Fund. JOYCE
ELKIN -- Mr. George H. Joyce Jr., 73, of 198 Partridge Lane passed away Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. Mr. Joyce was born Jan. 9, 1927, to George H. Joyce and Bertha Brim Joyce. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Jonesville, served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was a retired tobacconist. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Johnson Joyce of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey B. and Julie Joyce of Lenoir; a sister, Ms. Naomi Brent Joyce of Liberty; two grandsons, Logan and Brent Joyce; and a granddaughter, Cameron Joyce. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at Jonesville First Baptist Church by the Rev. Max Hill, the Rev. Terry Hunt and the Rev. Charles Lethcoe. He will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Elkin Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Johnson Funeral Home. LANKFORD
KING -- Mrs. Iva Mozelle Creed Lankford, 86, passed away Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, at Village Care of King. Mrs. Lankford was born in Surry County on May 30, 1914, to William John Jacob Elijah and Sara Jones Creed. She was a homemaker, a farmer and a member of Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church. She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Beulah and Hoover Hooker of White Plains, Norma Lee Wright and Glenn Wiles of North Wilkesboro, Barbara Ann and Bob Medley of Dobson, and Vickie Lynn and Earl Farrior of Rural Hall; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild . Mrs. Lankford was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse James Lankford; four sisters, Lillian Chilton, Opal Murphy, Anna Myers and Alma Adkins; and three brothers, Lester Creed, Oscar Creed and Raymond Creed. Funeral services for Mrs. Lankford will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church with Elder Weldon Joyce and Elder Jimmy Lankford officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000 at Cox-Needham Funeral Home, and other times at the Farrior home in Rural Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Volunteer Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o James Aubrey Joyce, 2097 Brown Mountain Road, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041. The Lankford family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain.

LEWIS
Naomi Ruth Bodenheimer Lewis fell asleep with the Lord Sept. 4, 2000. She was born Aug. 28, 1916, in Davidson County , the daughter of Cary R. and Carrie Motsinger Bodenheimer. She was married to John D. ''Jack'' Lewis , who died in 1980. She is survived by a daughter, Selma Anne Lewis Petree (J.M.); a grandson, Christopher Lewis Ray (Yvonne); a stepgranddaughter, Anna Petree Erwin (Matthew); a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Pfeiffer Ray; a sister-in-law, Mrs. G.M. (Pete) Bodenheimer; a niece, Alice B. Wilson (Don); a nephew, David G. Bodenheimer (Lynda); two great-nieces, Cari Wilson and Lauren Bodenheimer; two great-nephews, Matt Wilson and Martin Bodenheimer; and cousins Wayne and Martha Smith of Bradford Woods, Pa. Naomi was a longtime member of Peace Haven Baptist Church. She was a former secretary of the Pilot Mountain Baptist Association. She volunteered at Crisis Control Ministry for 24 years and in the Intensive Care Nursing Unit at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, where she had accumulated over 10,000 hours of service, ''But one thing she did, she forgot those things which were behind and reached forward to those things which were ahead and pressed toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.'' Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2000, at Peace Haven Baptist Church. A reception celebrating her life will follow the service. Until then the family will receive friends at her home. Naomi requested that memorials be made to Crisis Control Ministry, 200 E. 10th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Vogler and Sons Reynolda Chapel is serving the Lewis family.

LUNSFORD
HURDLE MILLS -- Stella Hawkins Lunsford, 73, of 1045 Hawkins Loop Road, Hurdle Mills, passed away from her earthly life Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000 , at Duke University Medical Center after a short period of illness. She was born in Person County Dec. 10, 1926 , to Otha Coleman Hawkins and Bessie Byrd Bradsher. Her husband, Coy Clinton Lunsford preceded her in death. Mrs. Lunsford was a long time member of ECKANKAR, Religion of Light and Sound of God and a charter member of the N.C. Satsang Society Inc. She served as an ECK spiritual aide and a person specially appointed to offer assistance in personal spiritual matters, and as an ECK initiator. She was a seamstress at Touch America in Hillsborough. She is survived by her children, June L. Sides of Winston-Salem, Louise L. Wrenn of Hurdle Mills, Wayne Lunsford (Mary Ann) of Stem, L. Michael Lunsford (Jeanette) of Hurdle Mills, Rose L. Scott (Joe) of Fords, N.J., Sherre W. Booth (Chris) of Hurdle Mills, David L. Lunsford of Hurdle Mills; a sister, Josephine H. Gentry of Hurdle Mills; 22 grandchildren; a great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m Saturday at the Brooks & White Chapel, 907 Durham Road, Roxboro by Mark Weber, a member of the ECKANKAR clergy. Family will receive relatives and friends at Brooks & White Funeral Home immediately after the service. Burial will be in the Lunsford family cemetery in Prospect Hill. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the ECKANKAR - N.C. Satsang Society, Inc., 6112 Giles Street, Suite 302, Raleigh, NC 27612.

MURRAY
Mrs. Mary Helen Astrop Murray, 69, of 1356 W. Sedgefield Drive passed away Sunday, Sept. 3, 2000, at her residence. She was a native of Stokes County born Sept 14, 1930. She was a member or the Morning Star Baptist Church where she was a member of the Senior Choir, the Sunday school and the Sally B. Richardson Missionary Group. She was a retired employee of Forsyth Medical Center as a lab technician. She was preceded in death by a son, Burrell Fredrick Murray. She is survived by two sisters, Corrine Williams (Will) of Winston-Salem and Patricia Clyburn (Jessie) of Rural Hall; a brother, Olin Martin Astrop of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Christine Astrop of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, James McDaniel of Columbia, S.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Donald Salley officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be from 3:30 to 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. (RUSSELL)

PITTS
Mr. Marquis DeLafayette Pitts, 88, of 3012 Dogwood St ., N.W. Washington, D.C., and formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 30, 2000, at the Mariner Health Facility of Bethesda, Md. He was born June 18, 1912, in Newberry, S.C., the son of Luella and Thomas Lee Pitts. He was educated in the public schools of Winston-Salem and continued his education at Morris Brown College in Atlanta and at West Virginia State University. He was a faithful member of the Shiloh Baptist Church of Washington, D.C., for more than 50 years where he was active in the Helping Hand Circle. He was a salesman and repairman of venetian blinds and other window treatments. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Johnson Pitts. He leaves to rejoice and celebrate his life, his daughter, Patrice M. Pitts of Washington, D.C.; his sisters, Eleanor P. McHenry of Hopkinsville, Ky., and Marion P. Best of Hyattsville, Md.; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Evergreen Cemetery. SHANK
ADVANCE -- Mrs. Pauline Barnhardt Carter Shank, 79, of Indian Hills Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 5, 2000, at her residence. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Fork Baptist Church with the Rev. Rusty Morrison officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. They request memorials be considered for the building fund of Fork BaptistChurch, c/o Mike Livengood, 3140 U.S. 64 E ., Mocksville, NC 27028. Mrs. Shank was born Sept. 26, 1920, in Davie County to J.C. and Bessie Hendrix Barnhardt. She was retired from Davie County Hospital, a graduate of Shady Grove High School Class of 1938 and a graduate of Forsyth Tech as an LPN. She was a member of Fork Baptist Church all of her life and was still active as church secretary. She had 38 years of perfect attendance in Sunday school. She was active with the CAPS Program of Davie County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Ray Carter, on Jan. 6, 1975, and by her second husband, Lloyd Dewitt Shank, on Feb. 1, 1997; a grandson; four sisters and two brothers. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Carter (George) Howard of Mocksville; three sons, Leon (Joan) Carter, Kenneth (Jean) Carter and Paul E. (Vickie) Carter, all of Advance; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a sister, Wilma Smith of Mocksville.

TAYLOR
Mrs. Theda Clements Taylor, 73, died Monday, Sept. 4, 2000, after an extended illness. She was a longtime resident of Winston-Salem and was born in Liberty, Ky. April 5, 1927, to the late Claude and Ella Clements. Her husband, Gerald F. Taylor preceded her in death. She is survived by three children, Jessica T. Barringer and Pamela T. Clitherow of Winston-Salem and Christopher G. Taylor of Lexington; six grandchildren, Jimmy L. Barringer of Mocksville, Bryan K. Barringer and Darrell D. Barringer of Winston-Salem and Sarah E. Taylor, Matthew M. Taylor and Katherine M. Taylor of Lexington; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Fithen and Delores Carrier; a brother, Elbert Clements all of Cincinnati; a sister-in-law, Lillian Kopp of San Juan Capistrano, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The family is eternally grateful to Ms. Jennifer Collins, RN, a longtime close friend, for pro viding continuous care for Mrs. Taylor during the course of her prolonged illness. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Forsyth Memorial Home Care or Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County. There will be a private family service at a later date. Memorial Funeral Chapel is serving the family.

THOMAS
WALKERTOWN -- Mrs. Cora Stillie Thomas, 87, passed away Monday, Sept. 4, 2000. She was born Jan. 16, 1913, to the late James Calvin and Ella Matthews Stillie in Walkertown. She married James E. Thomas on Jan. 18, 1930; he preceded her in death in 1986. Two brothers, Lummie R. Stillie Sr. and Wade S. Stillie also preceded her in death. Mrs. Thomas was a lifelong member of Love's United Methodist Church in Walkertown and was active with the church when her health permitted. She was involved with the community and school activities. She is survived by a daughter, Gaye Harper and her husband, Bud of Kernersville; three sons, Wayne Thomas and his wife Cecila of Walkertown, Lowell M. Thomas and his wife Kathy of Lincolnton, Ga. and Danny L. Thomas and his wife Sheree of Walnut Cove; 14 grandchildren; a special cousin, Nan Westmoreland; and numerous friends and other relatives. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 7, 2000, at the Love's United Methodist Church in Walkertown. The Rev. David Calhoun will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler and Son s Main Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Love's United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 8, Walkertown, NC 27051.
