WHATLEY
JULIAN, N.C. -- James ''Jimmy'' Arthur Whatley, 71, of Julian, N.C., died October 10, 1999. He was born September 21, 1928 in Athens, Texas. Mr. Whatley served in the U.S. Navy and then moved to Greensboro where he worked for Western Electric until he retired in 1990. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Brown Whatley, August 9, 1999; his mother, Thelma Whatley Andrews; and his father, Horace Whatley of Athens, Texas. Mr. Whatley is survived by two aunts, Nola Mae Sanders and Josie Cantrell both of Athens, Texas; a niece, Linda Whatley Chalote; and a nephew, Thomas Wayne Whatley both of Cleveland, Texas. Graveside Services will be held at 11:00 Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at Mtn. Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. E.A. Carroll Officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Hwy. 601 North of Yadkinville and may be contacted at other times at R.W. WILLIAMS
BOONVILLE -- Pearl Woodruff Williams, 98, of Woodruff Road, passed away Monday, October 11, 1999 at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. She was born in Yadkin County April 17, 1901 to Winnie W. and Hallie Shore Woodruff. She was a faithful member of Island Ford Baptist Church for 55 years. She worked in sales at Belks of Winston-Salem in the early Twenties and served as an assistant teacher at Dobbins School. She and Hubert lived in Florida during the great depression in order to find work. She was then a homemaker and helper for many, many years. Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan Hubert Williams in 1977; two sisters, Mary Williams and Sallie Tomlin; five brothers, Ben, Allen, Albert, Howard, and Paul Woodruff; and one great-granddaughter, Mrs. Williams is survived by a son, Otis (Nancy) Williams of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Clarice McKimie of Jonesville; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; five sisters, Rosa Kessler, Nina Hutchins, Lucy Masten, Nannie Huff, and Angeline Wright; and two brothers, Richard an Sampson Woodruff. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, October 13, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. by the Rev. Larry Thompson and the Rev. Conrad Hatfield at Island Ford Baptist Church, Hwy. 67, Jonesville. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Boonville Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Island Ford Baptist Church of Yadkin Share-a-Home, 2800 Woodruff road, Boonville, N.C. 27011. Arrangements for Mrs. Williams are being handled by Huff Funeral Home in East Bend.

CAUBLE
On the gentle night of Oct . 8, 1999, my mother, Della Cheek Cauble passed peacefully away. She was a courageous, spirited woman who lived 86 years. Even though she had been ill for the last six years, her spirit and determination portrayed a daily example of her dignity and grace. Della Cheek Cauble was born on Oct . 1, 1913 to James and Effie Tally Cheek. She was the oldest of seven children. She was a 1929 graduate of Rockwell High School. She attended Meredith College during the depression. She was a professional Hairdresser for 20 years in Salisbury, N.C., before becoming a full-time homemaker and mother. Her tremendous strengths and talents enabled her to care for her mother and father during their last years, and she was an unmatched artist in quilting and design, chair caning, needlepoint, upholstering, sewing, mastered delicate handwork in a hundred varieties, and still raised a family. Della is survived by her husband of 45 years, Melvin ''Sarge'' Cauble of Winston-Salem, daughter, Betsy Croker of Winston-Salem; grandchildren, Jessica Holcombe, twins Austin and Brandon Crocker of Winston-Salem; sisters, Elsie Cheek Hopkins of Richmond, Va., Mary Ann Cheek Lawrence of Boone, N.C., and Effie ''Sue'' Cheek Aldridge of Banner Elk, N.C. Services will be held Tuesday, Oct . 12, 1999 at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Rockwell, N.C., conducted by Dr. Jack Lawrence. Family and friends fellowship will be from 12:30 -2 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Rockwell. Burial will be in Ursinus Un. Church of Christ Cemetery in Rockwell. Special love and gratitude to Margaret and Beverly of Silas Creek Manor Nursing Home, who loved and cared for her, along with the other staff members. Your girl, Jessica, your buddy, Austin, and your partner, Brandon, miss and love you Moo-Moo. Thank you Ma for always loving me, guiding me, and always being there for me. I miss you so much. COLLINS
SPARTA, N.C. -- Mrs. Vesta Shepherd Collins, 96, of Collins Road, Sparta, died Saturday, October 9, 1999 at the Grayson Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Independence, Va. She was born August 27, 1903 to George and Ida Richardson Shepherd. Mrs. Collins graduated with a Teaching Certificate. She was employed as a school teacher and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie G. Collins. Surviving are two daughters, Doris Stoker of Sparta and Lucy Roe of Sparta; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Omega Collins of Raleigh, and George Bryan and Ida Maude Collins of Wilkesboro; 9 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Madge Shepherd of Laurel Springs, N.C.; and three step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Elder Jess B. Higgins and Rev. Tim Stamper will officiate. Burial will be in Crab Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, October 11, 1999 at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Crab Creek Cemetery Fund, c/o Rudolph Edwards, 342 Edwards Road, Ennice, N.C. 28623. The family will be at the home of the daughter, Doris Stoker, 4410 Highway 18 North, Sparta, N.C.

CURLEE
Mrs. Eloise Fritts Curlee, 62, passed away Sunday, October 10, 1999 at her home. Mrs. Curlee was born November 17, 1936 in Wilmington, Ohio to Mr. Robert Bailey and Ruby Miller Fritts. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church for almost 40 years, also was a loving wife, mother, and a long time homemaker. Surviving are her loving husband of 42 years, Mr. Robert E. Curlee of the home; and one son, Mr. Kent Robert Curlee of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are her mother, Mrs. Ruby Miller Fritts of Jacksonville, Fla.; and one brother, Mr. Robert Mason Fritts, also of Jacksonville, Fla. A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 2:30 p.m. at Forsyth Mausoleum Chapel with a pastor of the Centenary United Methodist Church officiating. Entombment following the service. The family asks that memorials be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, 1100-C S. Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103, or to Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. 5th Street, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27010, or to the donor's favorite charity. Hayworth Miller, Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

EDMONDS
PILOT MOUNTAIN -- Ida Mae Bruner Edmonds, 82, of Rt. 1, Pilot Mountain, died Saturday, October 9, 1999 at Northern Surry Hospital in Mount Airy. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Cox-Needham Funeral Home and Chapel in Pilot Mountain. Burial will follow in the Pine Hill Friends Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday evening, October 11, 1999 from 7-9 p.m. at Cox-Needham Funeral Home and Chapel.

FLYNT
RURAL HALL -- Mr. Dennis Keith Flynt, 38, of Rural Hall, died at Forsyth Medical Center on Friday, October 8, 1999 following a period of declining health. A native of Forsyth County, he was born July 14, 1961 to Daniel Budd and Iris Priddy Flynt. Mr. Flynt was employed by Tractor Supply Co. in Rural Hall. He was preceded in death by his father in 1991. Surviving are his wife of 9 years, Angela Akers Flynt of the home; one daughter, Amanda Michelle Flynt; and a step-daughter, Ashley Nichole, both of Rural Hall; his mother, Iris Flynt Davis of Winston-Salem; and three brothers, Donnie Flynt of Columbia, S.C., and Lee and Ricky Flynt, both of Winston-Salem. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at King Memorial Park at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 12, 1999, officiated by Rev. Jonathan Rogers. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. this evening at Hayworth-Miller, Rural Hall Chapel.

HART
Mr. Masten Stanley ''Joe'' Hart, 92, left our earthly presence on Sunday, October 10, 1999 at the Brian Center. He was born July 27, 1907 in Carroll County, Va. to Drewry Edgar and Mary Janette Stanley Hart. Mr. Hart was the last surviving of seven children and a charter member of Trinity Friends in Lewisville. He had retired from A & P Food Stores and enjoyed his yard and garden for many years. He is preceded in death by one son, Richard Stanley Hart. Surviving are his wife of 72 years, Ruby Hester Hart; one son, Gene Hart and wife, Joy of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Joan Grant and husband, Thomas of Kernersville, and Anna Bracey and husband, Richard of Montezuma; a daugher-in-law, Violet Hart of Lexington; many nieces and nephews; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Chapel. Rev. Jack Nance will officiate. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth Co. 1100-C S. Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103. A very special thank-you to the Comfort Care Program of Hospice.

HOWELL
YADKINVILLE -- Ms. Carolyn Ruth Howell, 67, of Yadkinville, died Sunday, October 10, 1999. Ms. Howell was born June 13, 1931 in Yadkin County to the late Thomas and Winnie Royall Howell. She was preceded in death by a baby sister, Francis; and two brothers, Marvin and Ralph Howell. Survivors include one sister, Blanche Hutchens of Yadkinville; and two brothers, Clarence ''Nookie'' (Lucy) Howell of Yadkinville and Blaine (Helen) Howell of Missouri. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at Harmony Grove Friends Church Cemetery with Rev. Keith Kannenberg officiating. The family will receive friends from 1-7 p.m. Monday at the home of her brother, Clarence ''Nookie'' Howell, 412 West Lee Avenue, Yadkinville. Memorials may be made to Harmony Grove Friends Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Jim Vestal, 1400 W. Main Street, Yadkinville, N.C. 27055. Gentry Family Funeral Service of 601 N. Yadkinville is serving the family.

JAMES
HOLTS SUMMIT, MO. -- Dr. Paul Marshall James, Jr, 66, of Holts Summit, Miss., died Friday, October 8, 1999 at the Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, Mo. He was born February 17, 1933 in Philadelphia, Pa. to the late Dr. Paul Marshall James, Sr. and Dorothy Rehfuss James, who resides in Winston-Salem, N.C. He married Janet Lewis with whom he had his four sons. He later married Cindy Knuth on October 9, 1987. She survives at their home. Survivors include, his mother, Dorothy James; and his brother Dr. Francis M. James, III, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; his four sons, Paul Marshall James, III, Esq. of Winston-Salem,and Kent, Randall, and Stuart James; seven grandchildren; his former wife, Janet Lewis Honecker of Wheeling, W.Va.; and his wife, Cindy James of Holts Summit, Mo. Dr. James was a graduate of Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pa. He served as a Captain in the United States Army stationed at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C., doing research on shock and trauma. He then completed one tour in Vietnam with a M.A.S.H. unit. He then joined the faculty of the Department of Surgery at the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., where he specialized in renal transplants, vascular surgery, and trauma. Most recently he was the Medical Director for the Fulton Diagnostic Center. He was a member of the Fellow American College of Surgeons, an avid golfer, and football fan. The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, October 13, 1999 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Founds Funeral Home High & Union Streets, West Chester, Pa. with funeral services at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at the Oaklands Cemetery in West Chester, Pa. Memorials are suggested to Friends of Swarthmore Athletics at Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pa. 19081.
