JOYNER
SOUTH DAYTONA, FLA. -- Mr. Howard Bircham Joyner, Sr., 89, of Doris Place, South Daytona, Fla., died October 9, 1999 at Halifax Medical Center. Mr. Joyner was born in Forsyth County. He moved to the South Daytona area in 1974. He was the owner of Joyner Flower Shop in Winston-Salem. He was a member of First Christian Church in Winston-Salem. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, and the Atlanta Braves. Survivors include one son, Howard B. ''Chip'' Joyner, Jr. of South Daytona, Fla.; two daughters, Ann Joyner Biscoe of Charlotte, N.C. and Judith Joyner Cowan of Burlington, N.C.; two sisters, Kathleen Burton of Advance, N.C. and Claudine Foltz of Winston-Salem, N.C.; one brother, C.W. (Jack) Joyner of Shelby, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Volusia Memorial Funeral Home, 4815 Clyde Morris Blvd., Port Orange, Fla. is in charge of the arrangements.

LAWSON
WALKERTOWN -- Mrs. Judith Lawson, 44, of Walkertown, died Sunday, October 10, 1999 at her home. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time and will be announced at a later date. Foster Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

MANNERING
Mrs. Blake Bowles Carter Mannering, 91, of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, October 10, 1999 at Silas Creek Manor. She was born February 28, 1908 in Stokes County to John M. and Ada Merritt Bowles. Mrs. Mannering was formerly employed with Hanes Hosiery and Duplan Corporation. She was a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church. Surviving is a daughter, Barbara Rothrock of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Macie Leonard of Welcome; and a brother, John Bowles, Jr. of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at New Friendship Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Roberson officiating. There is no stated visitation. (Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements.)

MARTIN
READING, PA. -- Mrs. E. Rebecca Banner Martin, 81, formerly of 430 A Minor Street, Reading, Pa., died on Friday morning, October 8, 1999 in St. Joseph Medical Center, where she had been a patient for six days. She was taken there from Beverly Manor, Exeter Township, where she had resided for two years. Born in Red Bank, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Ellis and Hadie (Petree) Banner. Mrs. Martin was employed 19 years as a machine threader by Garden State Tannery, Fleetwood, retiring in 1964. She was a member of North Eighth Street Church of God, Reading, Pa. Her husband, Earl Martin, died January 25, 1998. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Mary Martin. Surviving is a daughter, Mildred R. (Martin) Robertson of Reading, Pa.; a brother, Elmer Banner of Winston-Salem, N.C.; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 12:00 noon from Mount Zion Church of God in Christ, Reading, Pa. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reiffton. McBRIDE
JONESVILLE, N.C. -- Mrs. Arkie Smith Long McBride, 94, of 223 Oak Street, Jonesville, N.C. died Sunday, October 10, 1999 at Hoots Memorial Hospital. Mrs. McBride was born September 26, 1905 in Yadkin County to Thomas A. and Fannie W. Smith. She was employed in the weave room at Chatham Mfg. Co., retiring after 45 years of service. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Jonesville. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charlie H. Long in 1949, and her second husband, William Fletcher McBride in 1986; three brothers, Charlie, Ed, and Jones Smith; and one sister, Mrs. Mae Parks. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Rev. Bill Byrd of the home; step-sons, William Fletcher and Doris McBride, Jr., both of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Donna Byrd and Randy Byrd, both of Concord, and Lucretia Pruitt and Doug McBride, both of Winston-Salem; and three great-grandchildren, Kimberly Pruitt, Timothy Stancil, and Noel McBride. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Max Hill and Dr. Ray Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in the Longtown Cemetery in Hamptonville. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to First Baptist Church in Jonesville.

POOL
ADVANCE -- Mr. William Harrison Pool, 78, of Bermuda Village, died Saturday, October 9, 1999 at Forsyth Hospital in Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 10:00 a.m. at Shallowford Presbyterian Church in Lewisville, conducted by Dr. Leighton Culler and Rev. Emil Johnson of Watertown Methodist Church, Watertown, Conn. A native of Woodhaven, N.Y., he graduated from the Polytechnic Institute of New York in 1942 with a degree in Civil Engineering and earned a Masters of Business Admininstration from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J. Mr. Pool served in the U.S. Navy in World Ward II from 1942-1944. His career with Exxon spanned some 35 years and included both domestic and international assignments, where he held various positions in engineering and human resources. He was very active in the Red Cross, United Way, Meals on Wheels, Special Olympics, and Shallowford Presbyterian Church. While living in Connecticut, he was instrumental in starting the Junior Varsity Tennis Team for Darien High School. He is survived by his wife, Winifred; and daughter, Beverly Young of Englewood, Colo. Memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society of American, 600 Third Avenue, New York, N.Y. 10016 or Habitat for Humanity International of Americus, Ga.

POWERS
COLFAX -- Mr. Dewey Lee Powers, Jr., 68, of 515 N. Bunker-Hill Rd., Colfax, died October 10, 1999 at his residence. Mr. Powers was born November 21, 1930 to the late James S. Powers, Sr. and Ella Lee Peoples Powers. He was employed and later retired as a Machinist from AT&T and he was also a farmer. Mr. Powers was a member of Shady Grove Wesleyan Church in Colfax. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Gray Powers of the home; three daughters, Debbie P. Hoy of Cookeville, Tenn., Gayle P. Way of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Lea Ann P. Hopkins of Oak Ridge; one son Dwight Colin Powers of High Point; five brothers, James Powers, Jr., Robert Powers, and Ted Powers, all of Oak Ridge, Ned Powers of Winston-Salem, and Kenneth Powers of Greensboro; and a number of grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel with Rev. Wes Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Shady Grove Wesleyan Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 7-9 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home.

PRITCHARD
Mrs. Minnie Lee Hutchens Pritchard, 98, of Homestead Hills Assisted Living, died Saturday, October 9, 1999. She was born May 25, 1901 in Yadkin County to John Ellis and Carrie Williams Hutchens. She was a member of First Baptist Church since 1924 and a member of the Mary Martha Sunday School Class. Mrs. Pritchard was preceded in death by her husband, Joe W. Pritchard on June 29, 1966. He was President of Pritchard Electric Co. Inc. Surviving is one son, Charlie Gray (Bettie) Pritchard of Winston-Salem; one daughter, Betty (G.R. ''Jack'') Gordon of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Lee Gordon of Washington D.C. and Cindy Pritchard (Tony) Martin of Tobaccoville; and a sister-in-law, Helen Hutchens of Mount Airy. Visitation will be Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Voglers, Main Street. Graveside services will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park, Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. by Dr. David Hughes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 501 W. 5th Street, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101. We would like to express our thanks to Homestead Hills for their love and care given to our mother.

SIZEMORE
YADKINVILLE -- Darren James Sizemore, 4, of Stuart Lane, Yadkinville, died Saturday, October 9, 1999 at his home, after a lengthy illness. Darren was born on July 19, 1995 to Darriell and Mary Ellen Shell Sizemore, who survive of the home. Other survivors include, one brother, Justin Sizemore of the home; maternal grandmother, Donna Shell; paternal grandparents, Mildred and Phillip Sizemore of Boonville; and Jim Stanley, Sr; maternal great-grandfather, Robert Shell of Florida; aunts and uncles, Adeana Redding, Danny Sizemore, Michael Shell, Christina and James ''Bub'' Fortner, and Bobby and Lynn Shell; seven cousins; and lots of other family and friends who gave their prayer and support. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Gentry Family Chapel. Burial will be in Deep Creek Friends Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 N. of Yadkinville from 7-9 p.m. on Monday.

CARLTON
LEXINGTON -- Mr. Robert Lewis Carlton, 71, of Reich Street, Lexington, died at 12:55 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 1999 after a critical illness of two months. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 10, 1999 at Forest Hill Memorial Park. Rev. Lamar Moore will officiate. Mr. Carlton was born September 26, 1928 in Davidson County to John Franklin Carlton and Jessie Victoria Hawkins Carlton. He was the owner of R. Lewis Carlton Associates and a US Army Veteran, having served in WWII. He was a member of Masonic Lodge #473, Oasis Temple of Charlotte, Lexington Shrine Club, and a former Charter member of Masonic Lodge #98. He was also a member of VFW Post 3074, and of the Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Terry R. Carlton of Lexington; one son, Anthony J. (Tony) Carlton of Lexington; his mother, Jessie Victoria Hawkins Carlton of Lexington; and two brothers, Dewey V. Carlton of Lexington and W. Finley Carlton of Winston-Salem. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Davidson County, P.O. Box 1941, Lexington, N.C. 27293 or to a charity of the donor's choice. Davidson Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
