GAMBRELL
James Ragsdale Gambrell, 72, of Raleigh, passed on Wednesday, October 6, 1999 at Vencar Hospital in Greensboro following several months of illness. Mr. Gambrell was a native of Winston-Salem and was previously employed as Business Manager at Winston-Salem Teachers College (now WSSU) prior to moving to Raleigh. He was also a member of Cleveland Avenue Christian Church and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity while residing in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 11, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at Haywood Funeral Home, 2415 Wilmington St., Raleigh. The family can be reached at 2004 Firth of Tay Way, Raleigh 27603. HAIRE
Mrs. Eloise Murphree Foust Haire, 84, of 3811 Sandalwood Lane, died Wednesday, October 6, 1999 at her home. She was a member of Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, the Fidelas Sunday School Class and Circle Two. She was retired from Bowman Gray School of Medicine in 1977 after twenty-five years of service. She was twice married and both husbands preceded her in death. Ralph S. Foust died in 1957 and Fred R. Haire in 1983. She is survived by her seven Foust children, Stephen Edward Foust of Mocksville, Linda Matthews and William L. Foust of Clemmons, Dorothy Hall of Advance, Terry R. Foust, Renea Clifton, and Beverly Collins of Winston-Salem; thirteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and her loving sons-in-law and daughters-in-law. The family will receive friends at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Rd. Chapel Friday from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Rd. Chapel Saturday at 2:00 p.m. conducted by Dr. Kenneth Carter and Rev. Susan Hubbard. Interment will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Garden. Memorials may be made to Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church, 3543 Robinhood Rd., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27106.

HAYES
GREENSBORO -- Nathaniel P. Hayes, Sr., of Wellspring, died Thursday, October 7, 1999 at his Wellspring Residence. He was 98 years old. A native of Warren County, North Carolina, Mr. Hayes graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill, 1921, where he was academically recognized by election to Tau Beta Pi and the National Honorary Engineering Society. The university late recognized him in 1977 for his achievements in the years after graduation by presenting him its Distinguished Alumni Award. In 1926, Mr. Hayes began his employment with Carolina Steel Corporation. Through his dedicated service and exemplary leadership in many capacities, Mr. Hayes served the company as vice-president from 1945-1947, executive vice-president 1948-1951, president 1952-1967, chairman of the board 1967-1978, and honorary chairman in 1979. He also served as director and past president of The American Institute of Steel Construction and as a director and member of the executive committee of The National Association of Manufacturers. In the local business community, Mr. Hayes was a director of the North Carolina National Bank, Pomona Corporation, and Home Federal Savings and Loan Association. He also served as president of the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, was recognized as its ''Man of the Year'' in 1978, and was named to the Greensboro Business Leaders Hall of Fame in 1981. His civic involvement included trustee and member of the executive committee of the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, director of Junior Achievement of Greensboro, director of Greensboro Central YMCA, director of the Greensboro Chapter of the American Red Cross, president and director of the N.C. Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers, president and director of the N.C. Engineering Foundation, president and director of the Greater Greensboro United Fund, Trustee of Oak Ridge Military Academy, trustee of Bennett College, member of Advisory Board and Board of Visitors of Guilford College, member of Board of Visitors of Campbell University, director of the Excellence Fund at UNC-Greensboro, director of Weatherspoon at the UNC-Greensboro, and president of director of Business Foundation of North Carolina. Notwithstanding the heavy demands on his time and energies, Mr. Hayes still found time to exercise leadership in his church and religious life, serving as a ruling elder of his church, First Presbyterian Church of Greensboro, Director of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, member of the Advisory Council of Maryfield Nursing Home sponsored by the Roman Catholic Church, and member of the Board of Advisors of the Friends Home sponsored by the Society of Friends. Mr. Hayes was married to the late Louise Hull Hayes and is survived by his son, N. Perkinson ''Perk'' Hayes, Jr. of Greensboro. He is also survived by two grandsons, one granddaughter, and four great-grandsons. A funeral service will be held in the First Presbyterian Church Sanctuary on Monday, October 11, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. A committal service will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Street Chapel, Sunday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 and at the residence of Mr. N. ''Perk'' Hayes, Jr., 3203 St. Regis Rd., Greensboro. Contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 617 N. Elm St., Greensboro, N.C. 27401 or to the charity of choice.

HICKS
Mr. Kenneth Harvel Hicks, 82, of 5737 Germanton Rd., died Wednesday, October 6, 1999 at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after a period of declining health. Mr. Hicks was born in Stokes County December 31, 1916 the son of the late Lev and LouElla Sams Hicks. He was a member of the Unity Methodist Church in Archdale. He retired from Hanes Hosiery with 35 years of service. He also worked part-time for Pinebrook Grocery in Winston-Salem. Surviving are two daughters, Gail Hicks Tilley of the home and Betty H. Nelson and husband, Don of Walnut Cove; two grandsons, Greg James of Winston-Salem and Michael Hicks and wife, Sherri of Charlotte; two step-daughters, Brenda Hood of Conyers, Ga. and Connie Prevost and husband, Gregg of Cornelius, N.C.; and five step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Estelle Stewart Hicks and his son, Kenneth Wayne Hicks. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 1999 at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel by Rev. Jesse H. Manring. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall, N.C. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, Va. 23058-5216.

HUBAND
Mrs. Donnie Matheson Huband, died October 7, 1999 at Springmoor Retirement Center, Raleigh. Mrs. Huband taught in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System before retiring to Raleigh. She was preceded in death by her husband, William C. Huband, Jr. She is survived by three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Maxine Matheson of Raleigh, Mrs. Cliff Leonard of Lexington, and Mrs. Margaret Huband of Winston-Salem; one God-son, John Bailey Moor; four nieces; and one nephew. A memorial graveside service will be held Sunday, October 10, at 2:00 p.m. at forsyth Memorial Park conducted by Dr. James H. Banbury. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the United Methodist Children's Home, Inc., 1000 Reynolda Rd., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27104 or to the donor's choice.

JESTER
KING -- Mrs. Myrtice Lee Edge Jester, of Del Ray Mobile Home Park, Lot #9, passed away Thursday, October 7, 1999 at the home. Mrs. Jester was born September 11, 1919 in Atlanta, Georgia. Preceding Mrs. Jester in death was her husband, William Richard Jester and her parents, Thad and Helena Huggins. Mrs. Jester is survived by three daughters, Willie (Joe) Boothe, Helen Overby (special friend-Ralph Watts) all of King, and Thresa Ruth (Jim) Burger of Palm Harbor, Fla. Also surviving is five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Jester was of the Baptist faith and a member of Woodland Baptist Church. The Rev. Daniel Salmon will be officiating at the services for Mrs. Jester. The family will receive friends at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend Saturday evening, October 9, 1999 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Services for Mrs. Jester will be in the Huff Chapel on Sunday, October 10, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. The body will lie instate from 1:30 until time for the service. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall.

LYTTON
BOONVILLE -- Mrs. Darlene Hoosier Lytton, 42, of Boose Road, died unexpectedly Wednesday, October 6, 1999 at Hoots Memorial Hospital, She was born May 19, 1957 to Clyde and Elsie Scales Hoosier. She was a graduate of Elkin High School and a bookkeeper for Y.V.E.D.D.I. for 22 years. Mrs. Lytton was a member of Boonville First United Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her father, Clyde Hoosier. Surviving are her mother of Boonville; her husband, Danny Ray Lytton; her children, Yolanda Lytton, Brian Lytton and Derek Lytton all of Boonville; a daughter-in-law, Nikia Lytton; her grandchildren, DaParis Lytton and Dante' Saffo; and her mother-in-law, Margaret Lytton of Elkin. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 11, 1999 at Boonville First United Presbyterian Church conducted by Rev Calvin Crump. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

MOORE
ASHEBORO -- Jesse Harvey Moore, 82, of 817 Powhatan Ave., Asheboro, N.C., died Friday, October 8, 1999 at Asheboro Health and Rehabilitation. Funeral services will be Monday, October 11, 1999 at 2:00 p.m. at Asheboro United Church of Christ conducted by Rev. J. Nathan King. Burial will be in Randolph Memorial Park. Mr. Moore was a native of Chatham County and was retired from B&H Paneling. He was a member of Asheboro United Church of Christ and was an avid bird hunter and an animal lover. Surviving are his wife, Nellie Kinney Moore; a daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Ray Corbett of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Jeff Thrower of Lewisville; a great-grandchild, Tyler Thrower of Lewisville; and Dianne's adopted sister, Mamie Levan of Greensboro. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Sunday, October 10, 1999 at the Pugh Funeral Home, Asheboro. Memorials may be made to Asheboro United Church of Christ, P.O. Box 381, Asheboro, N.C. 27204.

NORMAN
Mrs. Mallie Dockery Norman, 94, formerly of 812 Birch Lane Apt. 9D, Kernersville, died Thursday, October 7, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born September 3, 1905 to the late Martin Luther Dockery and Lucy Freeman Dockery. She was a homemaker and a member of Union Cross Baptist Church, Surry County. Mrs. Norman was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Ervin Norman. Surviving are one daughter, Betty Yarborough and husband, Bill of Greensboro; one son, Ervin Norman, Jr. and wife, Jean of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Randy Wilson and wife, Ann of Winston-Salem, David Norman of Richmond, Va., and Tony Yarborough and wife, Mary of New York, N.Y.; and four great-grandchildren, Leslie Wilson, Lindsey Wilson, Tray Norman, and Lily Yarborough. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 9, 1999 at Union Cross Baptist Church Cemetery (Surry County) conducted by the Rev. Archer Livengood. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be made to Human Service Alliance, 3983 Old Greensboro Rd., Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101.

OWENS
Nancy Ross Pendleton Owens, of Bartram Road, Winston-Salem, died on Friday, October 8, 1999 following an extended illness. Mrs. Owens is survived by her daughters, Mary Frances Owens of New York City, Ann Lewis Owens of Chapel Hill, and Katherine Pendleton Owens of New York City. She is also survived by her sisters, Frances Pendleton London of Bermuda Run and Hazel Pendleton Dixon of Elizabeth City and her brother, Andrew Lewis Pendleton of Statesville. Mrs. Owens was born on January 23, 1928 to Dr. and Mrs. Andrew Lewis Pendleton of Elizabeth City. She was graduated from St. Mary's College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish. She did post graduate work in Spanish at the University of Tennessee. She married Edward Paul Owens and lived in Los Angeles, New York City, and Knoxville before moving to Winston-Salem in 1960. She was a real-estate broker. Mr. Owens is a long time member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and has served as president of the Bookshop Guild, co-chairman of the St. Paul's bazaar, a circle leader, and Sunday school teacher. She was on the altar guild and also volunteered with the Samaritan Inn. She was a member of Old Town Club, the Colonial Dames, the St. Mary's alumnae council of which she served as a vice president, the Flower Lore Garden Club and several bridge clubs. She served as past president of the Clara Siewers Service League of the Moravian Home, vice president of the Friendship Force of Winston-Salem, and vice president of the Summit School parent's council. Mrs. Owens was a volunteer at Crisis control Ministries and has been active in civic fundraising for the Winston-Salem Symphony, the cancer drive, and various charities. The family will receive visitors in the home on Sunday, October 10, 1999 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Monday, October 11, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. The interment will be in Old Hollywood Cemetery in Elizabeth City at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 12, 1999 The family requests that in lieu of flowers, gifts be made to Crisis Control Ministries at 200 East Tenth Street, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27101, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, or Hospice of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County.
