RAYSON
Mr. Luther Sterling Rayson, Sr., 70, of Winston-Salem, died Monday, November 22, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Rayson was born September 28, 1929 in Hazelton, Pa. to John Edward and Mary Waldron Rayson. He was employed with Roadway Trucking for over 20 years before serving as an Engineer Technician for a Company in Palacious, Texas. Mr. Rayson was a member of the Grand Aerie and was the Past President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was a member of American Legion Post 0649 of Texas and was a member of the Eberist Lutheran Church. Surviving are five children, Laura Rayson Shankle of Midway, N.C., Johnny Sterling Rayson of Winston-Salem, N.C., Linda Rayson Cooper of Midway, Luther Sterling Rayson, Jr. of Winston-Salem, and Sonya Rayson Haynes of Sanford, N.C.; two step-sons, Billy Joe Duggins, Jr. and Rodger Dale Duggins both of Winston-Salem; eighteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Edward Rayson of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Harrison Rayson of New Orleans, La. Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 1999 at the Parklawn Mausoleum Chapel, Winston-Salem, N.C. by Rev. Kevin Haynes. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at Parklawn Mausoleum Chapel. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.

SHEARIN
Mrs. Sandra Pendergraft Shearin, 60, of Gould St., died November 23, 1999 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Durham County on October 8, 1939 to Luther Bert and Elizabeth Barton Pendergraft. Mrs. Shearin was educated in the Durham County School System and graduated from Durham High School. She was employed by Duke University in cancer research prior to coming to Winston-Salem where she worked for Winston-Salem Health Care. She was a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. Mrs. Shearin was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Nancy Webb. Surviving are her husband, Marshall; one son, Christopher Bert Shearin of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Nancy Elizabeth Shearin of Winston-Salem and Jenny Hildenbrand and her husband, Travis of Winston-Salem; and one grandchild, Fallon La' Chele Shearin. A memorial service will be 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 24, 1999 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Bill Garrard officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1900 S. Hawthorne Rd., Ste. 622, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103-3901.

STEELMAN
HARMONY -- Mr. Woodrow Marshall (Woody) Steelman, 86, of 3607 Harmony Hwy., died Tuesday at Iredell Memorial Hospital. Born January 16, 1913 in Yadkin County, he was a son of the late Marshall Steelman and Dina Long Steelman. He was a retired mechanic and served during World War II in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Harmony Baptist Church and was an avid fisherman and camper. On November 23, 1943 he married the former Rachel York who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Diane Steelman Cain and her husband, Johnie of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Susan Steelman Burke and her husband, Bill of Matthews, N.C. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Zelma S. Long of Winston-Salem and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services are scheduled fro 3:00 p.m. Friday at Reavis Funeral Home of Harmony with Rev. Edward Mitchum and Rev. David McHugh officiating. Burial will follow in the Harmony Cemetery. The family will assemble at the residence of the deceased and will receive friends from 1:00 until 3:00 p.m. Friday afternoon prior to the funeral at the Reavis Funeral Home of Harmony. For those who prefer, memorials may be given to the Iredell County Heart Association or the Iredell County Council on Aging. Reavis Funeral Home of Harmony is serving the Steelman family.

WOOD
YADKINVILLE -- Mr. Thomas Arthur ''Tommy'' Wood, 60, of Yadkinville, died November 22, 1999 at Willow Brook Health Care Center. He was born March 7, 1939 to the late Roy Herbert and Ruby Hayes Wood. He was a retired Car Salesman and a member of Sandy Springs Baptist Church. Surviving is one daughter, Sherry (Roger) O'Dell of Hamptonville; one son, Chuck (Teresa) Wood of Yadkinville; two sisters, Bertha Vanhoy of East Bend and Nancy (Jimmy) King of Hamptonville; five brothers, Mac Wood of Yadkinville, Felix (Marie) Wood of Dobson, James (Nancy) Wood of Harmony, Franklin (Edna) Wood of Yadkinville, and Roy Wayne ''Woody'' Wood of Boonville; and three grandchildren, Darryl (Hope) Wood, Tonya Spann, and Kelly Wood. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, November 26, 1999 at Gentry Family Chapel conducted by Rev. Eddie Macemore and Dr. Roger O'Dell with burial at Sandy Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mtn. Rd., Jonesville, N.C.

BAKER
KING -- Mr. Odell Raleigh Baker, 74, of Scenic View Nursing Center, King, N.C., died there Sunday morning, October 24, 1999. Mr. Baker was born December 16, 1924 in Surry County, N.C. to the late Daniel Hubert and Rosie Esther Hicks Baker. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Friendly Chapel Church. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Max Ray and Carol Baker of Mt. Airy; two step-daughters and sons-in-law, Lela and Bunzy Eaton of Pilot Mountain and Verla and R.W. Collins of Pinnacle; three grandchildren, Max Ray Baker, Jr., of Lowgap, Mitchell Mears and Chris Baker, both of Mt. Airy; two great-grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; one sister, Carrie Ruth Holt of Siloam; and two brothers, William Baker of Lexington and Virgil Baker of Dobson. Mr. Baker was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Jane Baker; a daughter, Marilyn Jane Baker Mears; a grandson, Jeremy Clay Baker; and a brother, Dallas Baker. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Friendly Chapel Church, conducted by Bro. Don Collins, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday night at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mt. Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the service.

BARNETTE
WELCOME -- Mrs. Mary Ellen Johnson Barnette, 58, of 115 Wilson St., Welcome, N.C. passed away at 11:00 p.m., Saturday, October 23, 1999 at her home, after an illness of two years. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Trinity Baptist Church, where she was a charter member. Rev. Charles Tanner and Rev. William James Rash will officiate. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. in the Grassy Knob Baptist Church Cemetery in Union Grove, N.C. Mrs. Barnette was born on June 9, 1941 in Rutherford County to Romie Ashburn Johnson and Vassie Canipe Johnson. She was a Customer Service Rep. for Laboratory Corporation of America in Winston-Salem. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Coite Barnette of the home; one son, Michael Allen Barnette of Winston-Salem; one daughter, Elizabeth Anne Barnette of the home; and brothers, Earl Johnson and wife, Wilma of Shelby, N.C., Carl Johnson and wife, Lib of Morganton, N.C., Lebron Johnson and wife, Doris of Valdese, N.C. and J.W. Johnson and wife, Martha of Morganton, N.C. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Monday night at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel, and at other times at the home on Wilson St. in Welcome. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Forsyth County, 1110-C South Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, N.C. 27103.

JOHNSON
Mr. Jerry Dewayne Johnson, 45, of Winston-Salem, died at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Sunday morning, October 24, 1999. A native of Forsyth County, he was born January 17, 1954 to Earnest Lee and Reatha Roark Johnson. Surviving are his brother, James E. Johnson of the home; two sisters, Lenda J. Willard of Walnut Cove and Phyllis J. Scott and husband, Bruce of Walkertown; two nieces, Lisa Scott and Melissa Johnson; and three nephews, Bruce Scott, Jr., Don Johnson, and Fred McKnight. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown, N.C. Rev. Charles Bowling, Sr. will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. this evening at Hayworth-Miller, Rural Hall Chapel.

MAYBERRY
Mr. Ray Junior Mayberry, 75, of Winston-Salem, passed away Saturday, October 23, 1999. Mr. Mayberry was born August 10, 1924 in Pulaski, Va. to Fred R. and Ona Holderfield Mayberry. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Mayberry loved his neighbors and made his produce rounds each Saturday in which he dearly loved. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Shirley Joyner (Wayne) of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Linda Alexander (Daniel) of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Gail Knowles (Scott) of Clemmons, Mrs. Cindy Bailey (Ronnie) of Galax, Va., and Mrs. Treasa Templeton (Gary) of Winston-Salem; five sons, Mr. R.E. Mayberry (Colene) of Clemmons, Mr. Sherman Mayberry of Clemmons, Mr. Ronnie Mayberry (Martha) of Winston-Salem, Mr. David Mayberry (Gracie) of Lewisville, and Mr. Eddie Mayberry (Mary Ann) of Tobaccoville; 17 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one brother, Mr. Pete Mayberry (Barbara) of Galax, Va., and Evelyn Cameron, a very special friend and her son, Robert of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Hayworth-Miller, Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Levy Goodrich officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

PATTERSON
Mr. Clyde R. ''Buck'' Patterson, 87, of Midpines Dr., died at Forsyth Medical Center on October 23, 1999. He was born in Forsyth County on May 15, 1912 to Arlindo and Clara Frances Brown Patterson. Mr. Patterson was a member of Pine Chapel Moravian Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent and teacher. He was a past member of the NC National Guard and he had retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School Maintenance Department. Mr. Patterson was also known was an avid sports fan for many years. He is survived by his wife, Arietta Dease Patterson; one brother, Bedford Patterson; and one sister, Mary Simmons and her husband, Gene, all of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Pine Chapel Moravian Church with Rev. Matthew W. Allen and Rev. George Chitty officiating. The body will lie-in-state thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at the Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

RICHARDSON
Mr. Richard Alan Richardson, 45, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, October 23, 1999 at High Point Regional Hospital. Alan was born on February 19, 1954 in Guilford County, the son of John F. and Margaret J. Webb Richardson. He was a member of Wallburg Baptist Church and a former Sunday School teacher. He was also an employee of Thomasville Furniture Industries. He was a graduate of Mars Hill College and had a Masters of Divinity from Southeastern Theological Seminary. He was an Assistant Football Coach at Ledford Sr. High School and was a former college football player. On January 10, 1981, he married the former Pamela Potter, who survives of the home. Other survivors incldue his two sons, Dylan and Wesley; and a daughter, Tamer, all of the home; his mother, Margaret J. Webb Richardson of Thomasville; one brother, J. Terry Richardson and wife, Pam of Thomasville; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Jerry and Ruth Potter; brothers-in-law, Philip Potter and wife, Cheryl, and Tim Potter; sister-in-law, Deborah P. Jordan and husband, Danny; one niece, Lauren Potter; and seven nephews, Chris and Cameron Richardson, both of Greensboro, Derrick Potter, Matthew Potter, Brandon Lassiter, Tyler Jordan, and Trevor Jordan. Mr. Richardson was preceded in death by his father, John F. Richardson in 1990. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 1999 at Wallbury Baptist Church with Reverend J. Max Evington officiating. Interment will follow at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Thomasville. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. on Monday at Foster Funeral Home. The family respectfully requests that memorials in Alan's memory be made to the Wallbury Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box #46, Wallburg, N.C. 27373.
