He was a native of Covington, Ga., son of the late Frank Burton and Lucille Blau Vardeman, brother of the late William G. Vardeman, engineer at Milliken and Co., member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, Mason, ham radio operator.

He was a native of Gaston County, son of the late Roscoe and Lula Guffey Metcalfe, brother of the late Robert L. Metcalfe and Verl Winchester, retired from the Army after 21 years, member of First United Methodist Church, Bessemer City, Military Rights by the American Legion Post 263, Masonic Rights by the Masonic Lodge, Bessemer City.
