William W. Modlin Sr.
LINCOLNTON - William Wilson "Bill" Modlin Sr., 78, 608 N. Flint St., died Jan. 19, 2000, at Catawba Memorial Hospital in Hickory. He was a native and lifelong resident of Lincoln County, son of the late B.M. and Jessie Dellinger Modlin, husband of the late Mary Esther Rhyne Modlin, father of the late William W. "Bill" Modlin Jr., brother of the late Mary Helen Kennedy, retired from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department where he served as the director of communications, helped install the Lincoln County 911 emergency communication system, Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, amateur "ham" radio operator, member of First United Methodist Church of Lincolnton.

GASTONIA - J. Mack Holland Jr., 85, Covenant Village, 1351 Robinwood Road, died Jan. 18, 2000, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late J. Mack Sr. and Alice Boyden Holland, attended local city schools, graduated from Davidson College in 1934, member of its men’s varsity basketball team, president of the "D" Club, member of Kappa Sigma fraternity and O.D.K. Leadership Society, graduated from Duke University Law School in 1937 and president of his senior class, lieutenant in the Coast Guard during World War II, assigned to the amphibious Pacific theater, served with distinction as Beach Master in six combat landings including the Aleutian, Gilbert and Marshall Islands and Saipan, awarded Presidential Citation Medal for meritorious service in the face of enemy fire, life-long member of First United Methodist Church, Gastonia, where he was a past member and chairman of its administrative board, past chairman of pastoral committee, personnel committee, finance committee, church board of trustees, Sunday school teacher and chairman of the endowment trustees for its first 10 years, Eagle Scout and former Scoutmaster of Troop 11, past president Gastonia Civitan Club and Gastonia Jaycees, member and former president of Gaston Country Club, Salvation Army board, Gaston County chapter of the American Red Cross and Gaston County American Cancer Society, member Duke Law School alumni council 1969-1972, North Carolina Local Government Commission 1976-1979, recipient of the 1997 Civitan Club’s award as the Outstanding Citizen of Gastonia, practiced law in Gastonia from 1938 until his retirement in 1983, of counsel and co-founder of Alala, Mullen, Holland & Cooper, P.A. law firm, city attorney from 1955-1976, member of Gaston County Bar Association (president 1949), North Carolina State Bar, North Carolina Bar Association (member of board of governors 1966-1972, president 1970-1971), past chairman Mandatory CLE, Commercial, Banking and Business Law, of John J. BELMONT - George Robert Auten, of Belmont, died Jan. 19, 2000, at home. He was a native of Belmont, son of the late Marvin Craig and Helen McDaris Auten, graduate of Belmont High School, Gupton-Jones School of Mortuary Science, Nashville, Tenn., worked for Bumgardner-Fite Funeral Home, guardsman and chief master sergeant in the N.C. Air National Guard, appointed as military aide in 1977 by Gov. James Hunt, reappointed in 1981, Air National Guard Outstanding Airman of the Year in 1976, graduate of Air Force Active Duty NCO Academy, provided annual Christmas party for disabled children of Western North Carolina Center, Morganton, received Air Force Meritorious Service medal, Air Force Commendation medal, Air Force Achievement medal, two North Carolina Distinguished Service medals, retired from National Guard in 1987 after more than 36 years of service, member of the North Carolina National Guard Association since 1960, serving on the executive committee, elected 2nd,, 1st vice president and president of the association in 1975-76, helped form the NC National Guard Association Educational Foundation, serving as chairman of the Scholarship Selection Committee, president of the foundation, active in the Belmont Lions Club for 30 years, serving as president, zone chairman and deputy district governor, 32nd degree Scottish Rite mason, member of the Shrine-Oasis Temple, charter member of the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States, Auten-Stowe American Legion Post, Air Force Association, member of First Presbyterian Church of Belmont.
