SHELBY — Grady Harrill "Humpy" Lovelace, 79, 903 W. Elm St., died April 8, 2000, at Hospice of Wendover.
He was a native of Cleveland County, son of the late Grady Lee and Mary Eugenia Harrill Lovelace, retired fireman from the Shelby Fire Department after 31 years, worked 16 years at Kemet as a security guard, member of Bethel Baptist Church, N.C. Fireman’s Association and former manager of the Moose Lodge, World War II Air Force veteran, served in Belgium, England and France.
SURVIVORS: Wife, LaVonda Jones Lovelace; son and daughter-in-law, Harrill Lee and Beth Lovelace, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; daughter, LaVonda Lovelace Huskey, Simpsonville, S.C.; grandchildren, Ryan Lee and Michael Steven Huskey, Jr., Lauren Elizabeth and H. Charles Mayes, Sr.
CHARLOTTE — Charles W. Mayes, Sr., 53, formerly of Gastonia, died April 8, 2000.
He was a native of Baltimore, son of the late Charles Stanley and Hazel Smith Mayes, gunnery sergeant in the Marine Corps from 1968-75, served two tours of duty in Vietnam, awarded two Purple Heart medals, a Silver Star, Bronze Star and a Combat Action medal, served in the Army Reserves from 1975-77, member of the Metrolina Vietnam Veterans Association.
SURVIVORS: Wife, Marie Mayes; children, Dawn Seagroves, York, S.C., Chuck Mayes, Jr., Rock Hill, Angela and Dana Mayes, Charlotte; brothers, Dennis Mayes, Texas, Alton Mayes, California; 10 grandchildren; Carol Mayes, mother of his children.

KINGS MOUNTAIN — Gervace W. "Snuffy" Sentell, 77, 617 Mary’s Grove Church Road, died April 9, 2000, at Kings Mountain Hospital.
He was a native of Greenville, S.C., son of the late Jack and Annie Goodlett, retired from the Navy and served in the Marine Peace Corp., attended Free Spirit Gospel Tabernacle, Kings Mountain, member of the American Legion Otis D. Greene Post 155 and the VFW, Kings Mountain.

DALLAS — Thelma Ratchford Cloninger, 83, formerly of West Trade Street, died April 9, 2000, at her daughter’s home in Gilroy, Calif.
She was a native of Catawba County, wife of the late Claude Albert Cloninger, daughter of the late Jasper Eli and Ida Clemmer Ratchford, sister of the late Clyde Ratchford, employed for 30 years as a dietician with Gaston County School System at Dallas High School and Carr Elementary School, member of Holy Communion Lutheran Church, WELCA, Sunday school teacher, former member of church council, life member of Southern Seminary Auxiliary.

He was a native of Orangeburg, S.C., son of the late Edward Osborne Sr. and Lillian Freeman Hudson, graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, Bexley Hall Episcopal Seminary and Winthrop University, served churches in Dayton, Ohio, Winnsboro, S.C., Ridgeway, S.C., Easley, S.C., Columbia, S.C., Abbeville, S.C., York, S.C., Kings Mountain, served on Music Commission, Examining Chaplain for the Diocese of Upper South Carolina, Fourth Province representative to National Episcopal Diocesan Ecumenical Officers, active in Scottish Heritage, served 14 years as national chaplain of Clan Donald, USA, personal chaplain to Lord Macdonald of Macdonald, chaplain of Stone Mountain Highland Games for several years, served 20 years as volunteer firefighter for York Fire Dept., chairman of York’s 1970 Tricentennial Celebration.
