She was a native of Sioux City, Iowa, daughter of the late Fred S. and Hattie Vandervelde Kreykes, retired private elementary school teacher and child care worker, member of Belgrade United Methodist Church, North Mankato, Minn., was one of the first to enlist in the Navy as a W.A.V.E. and obtained the rank of Chief Petty Officer, served in World War II Hospital Corps at Parris Island.
