Covington Sr. and Thelma Johnson, Eagle Scout, educated in Gastonia city schools, attended Riverside Military Academy, Davidson College, graduate of Baylor University, Waco, Texas, Navy veteran of World War II, served aboard the USS Beaver, lieutenant with the Corp of Engineers in the Reserve, in purchasing with Burlington Industries, director of Spring Industry, vice president of purchasing for Fieldcrest Mills, on board of Purchasing Management in South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.
