He was a native of Gaston County, son of the late Walter H. and Annie Mae Wright Watkins, brother of the late Vergie Pervine, staff sergeant in Army Air Corps, served in the Pacific during World War II, graduate of Belmont High School, Evans College of Communications, attended Oklahoma A&M, owner of Watkins Accounting, member of East Baptist Church, choir, Sunday school superintendent and deacon.

GASTONIA - Fred Wesley Shugars, 87, 507 Carolina Ave., died Sept. 22, 1999, at Gaston Memorial Hospital. He was a native of Dickson, Ill., son of the late Alva Hoff, husband of the late Ethel Lewis Shugars, Army veteran of World War II and Vietnam War, retired textile employee, of Episcopal faith.
