Willie G. Joyner
TYNER - Willie Gordon Joyner, 84, a native of Northampton County, died September 19, 2002, in the Skilled Nursing Facility of Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Ballard's Bridge Baptist Church by the Rev. John D. Wilkinson. Burial followed at the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Edenton, was in charge. Memorial donations may be made to the church memorial fund at Ballard's Bridge Baptist Church, 3025 Virginia Road, Tyner, NC 27980.

Joyner moved to Chowan County in 1948 as a dealer for J.R. Watkins Co. and later worked as an electrician with Norfolk Naval Yard. In 1953 he began farming and for many years served as a committeeman on the ASCS - USDA Board in Chowan County. A member of Ballard's Bridge Baptist Church, he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and trustee. He was also a charter member of, both the Center Hill - Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department and the Chowan Ruritan Club.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Jane Morris Joyner; two brothers, Clarence M. Joyner of Edenton and Bernard 0. Joyner of Sun City, Ariz.; and two grandsons.

R. Coleman Morgan
PORTSMOUTH, Va - R. Coleman "Peanut" Morgan, 74, a native of Gates County, died Aug. 20, 2002 at the home of his daughter in Suffolk.

Morgan was a retired tile and marble contractor after 50 years in the profession. He was retired from the federal government with 10 years of service at NNSY. He was a member of Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge for 48 years and formerly an active member of the American Cancer Society's Lost Chord Club.

A funeral was conducted Aug. 23, 2002 in Snellings Funderal Home, Churchland Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Martin, the Rev. Deb Jenkins and Dr. Lewis Morgan officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Survivors include his wife. Virginia Lee Morgan; his daughter, Jan Monroe of Suffolk: two brothers, James E. Morgan of Chesapeake and Dr. Lewis H. Morgan of Richmond: two sisters, Oneal Rowe of Portsmouth and Sue Arnold of Tennessee: and three grandchildren.

Addie G. Wiggins
PORTSMOUTH, Va. - Addie Geneva Wiggins, 85, a native of Gates County, died Aug. 18, 2002 in her residence.

Wiggins was the widow of James M. Wiggins and a member of St. John A.M.E. Zion church in Sunbury. She was also a member, usher and deaconess of Celestial Baptist Church in Portsmouth.

A funeral was conducted Aug. 23, 2002 at St. John A.M.E. Zion Church with the Rev. Ernest Chambliss, eulogistic services, and minister of the church, the Rev. Willie Littlejohn. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Julia Hughey of Richmond and Waldensia Wiggins of
Portsmouth, and a sister, Clarice Barrington of New Jersey.

Charlie R. Smith
CHESAPEAKE. Va. - Charlie Riddick Smith, 91, a native of Gates County, died Aug. 26, 2002.

A funeral was conducted Aug. 28, 2002 at South Norfolk Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Amos Eby. Burial was in the Riverside Memorial Park. Memorial contributions should be made to the Charlie Smith Multi - Purpose Building of Cornerstone Christian School, 1212 Willow Avenue, Chesapeake, Va. 23325.

Smith had retired after 43 years as an industrial chemist with F.S. Royster Co. He was a member of South Norfolk Congregational Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Harriette Long Smith; two daughters, Linda Pigott and Sharon Karibian, both of Virginia Beach; and a brother, Wilber L. Smith of Norfolk.

Melody R. Stell
SUFFOLK, Va. - Melody Fern Roberts Stell, 56, died Aug. 26, 2002 at her residence.

A memorial service was conducted Aug. 28, 2002 at Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of the Harrell & Hill Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Memorial Donations, 604 Constance Woods Dr., Suffolk, Va. 23434

Survivors include a daughter, Robyn S. Lewis of Carrsville and Amber S. Freeman of Windsor, Va.: a son, Robert C. Stell Jr. of Hobbsville: a brother, James E. Roberts of Kill Devil Hills; two sisters, Sandra Ellswick of Chesapeake and Wanda Elliott of Virginia Beach and five grandchildren.

Elnoria B. Boone
PETERSBURG, Va. - Elnoria B. Boone, a native of Gates County, died Aug. 28, 2002 in Petersburg, Va.

A funeral was held Sept. 1, 2002 at Stoney Branch Baptist Church in Gates with the Rev. Franklin Lee officiating. Burial was in the Boone Cemetery.

Survivors include two daughters, Clarine B.Cooper of Norfolk, Va. and Canzata B. Turner of Petersburg, Va.; three grandchildren and one great - grandson.

John E. Piland
HERTFORD - John Edward Piland, 83, native of Gates County, died Jan. 6, 2003 in his home.

Piland was the son of the late Ike and Sophie Lassiter Piland. He worked with the former Towe Motor Company as an auto mechanic for 40 years and was a member of Hertford Baptist Church.

Graveside services were held Jan. 9, 2003 in Cedar Wood Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth MeNeill officiating.

Survivors include his wife Myrtle Hill Piland, a son John E. Piland Jr. of Clayton, NC; a sister, Maxie Lassiter of Gatesville; two grandchildren and a great - grandchild.

Johnetta B. Pettengill
HERTFORD - Johnetta Belch Pettengill, 88 a native of Chowan County, died Jan. 8 2003, at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Penttengill was a widow of Williard LaRue Pettengill and the daughter of the late Lula Valentine and Zeddic Albert Belch. She was a member of the Woodville Baptist Church and the Durants Neck Ruritanettes.

A funeral service was held Jan. 11, 2003 in Woodville Baptist Church. Burial was in the Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton.

Survivors include two daughters, Debbie Barket of Ahoskie and Elaine Rigby of Wells, ME; a son, John L. Pettengill of Richmond, Va.; and eight grandchildren.

Marie W. Jones
CORAPEAKE - Marie Wilson Johnson [sic], 70, a native of Gates County, died Jan. 9, 2003, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.

Jones was the daughter of the late Williams Thomas and Mildred Benton Wilson. A homemaker, she was member of Savage's United Methodist Church.

A funeral was held Jan. 11, 2003 in Savage's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Williams officiating. Burial was in the Parker's United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Survivals include her husband, David F. "Buddy" Jones.

Jewel Couch Jr.
GATESVILLE - Jewel "Smokey" Couch Jr., 70, a native of hot Springs, Ark, died Jan. 8, 2003 in Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

Couch was the son of the late Jewel Sr. and Flora Weaver Couch. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, he had retired from the Norfolk Ford Assembly Plant after 37 years of employment.

A graveside service will be held Jan. 13, 2003 in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. The family asks that flowers be omitted and contributions be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Ann Shires Couch; two daughters, Paulette Klingensmith of Fairmont, W. Va. And Charmaine Couch of Chesapeake; two sons, Jewel "Rockey" Couch III and Stacey Couch, both of Chesapeake; a stepdaughter, Lisa Evans of Gatesville; two sisters, Lorraine Skrivanas of Little Rock, Ark. And Dorothy Craine of Chesapeake; four grandchildren; a great - granddaughters, three step - grandchildren; and two step - great - grandchildren.
