Lindsay Hurdle
HOBBSVILLE - Abram Lindsay Hurdle Sr., 73, a native of Gates County, died Jan. 8, 2002, in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

A funeral was conducted Thursday at Sandy Cross Baptist Church by the Rev. E. Vernon Gilmer Jr. Burial was in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. Memorial donations may be made to Sandy Cross Baptist Church, Hobbsville, NC 27946 or to a favorite charity.

Hurdle was the retired owner and operator of A.L. Hurdle's Store. He was a member, deacon and trustee of Sandy Cross Baptist Church and also a member of Hobbsville Ruritan Club.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Wiley Hurdle; three daughters, Betty Hurdle Joyner of Ahoskie, Regina Paige Hurdle and Gail Hurdle Hawkins, both of Hobbsville; a son, A.L. Hurdle Jr. of Corapeake; a sister, O'Neil Hurdle Worrell of Windsor, Va.; and six grandchildren.

Thomas E. Powell Sr.
PORTSMOUTH, Va. -Thomas Edwin Powell Sr., 85, a native of Gates County, died Jan. 7, 2002, at Cypress Glen Retirement Community, Greenville.

A graveside service was conducted Thursday at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Tom Potter. Sturtevant Funeral Home was in charge. Memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity.

Powell retired from Sears Roebuck and Co. as manager of the truck tire department in Norfolk. He was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church, Portsmouth, and a 32-year member of America-Fellowship Masonic Lodge No. 148.

Survivors include his wife, Edith Daughtry Powell; a son, Thomas E. Powell Jr. of Greenville; and a grandson.

Marion F. Eason
SUNBURY - Marion Faye Eason, 41, died Jan. 9, 2002, in Sunbury.

A funeral was conducted at Saturday in St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. Charlie Moore. Burial was in the church cemetery.

She worked for many years as a CAN with Chowan Hospital Home Care. She was a member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, Sunbury.

Survivors include her parents, Herbert Lee and Gertrude Riddick Walker of Brooklyn, N.Y.; her adoptive mother, Addie Mae Eason of Sunbury; a son, Dominick Eason; two brothers, Willie Eason and Lamont Walker; four sisters, Gloria Riddick, Marilyn Walker, Sonja Bush and Lori Davis; and her maternal grandmother, Martha Riddick.

Shirley Eure
GATES - Shirley Eure, 64, died Jan. 10, 2002, at his residence.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Okie H. Boone Jr.
GATES---Okie Homer Boone Jr. of Gates County died Dec. 9, 2002 in Waverly, Va.

A funeral was held a 1 p.m., Dec. 15, 2002 at the Native American Christian Church, Winton with the Rev. Charles R. Reid Jr. officiating.

Burial was in the Boone's Family Cemetery in Gates.

Clyde E. White Jr.
PORTSMOUTH, Va.---Clyde Emmett White Jr., 61, a native of Portsmouth, Va., died Dec. 11, 2002 in his residence.

White was a retired master plumber with over 40 years of service.

A funeral was held Dec. 16, 2002 in Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel. A memorial graveside service was held Dec. 18, 2002 in Olive Branch Cemetery.

Survivors include by his aunt who raised him, Katherine "Kitty" Sears of Portsmouth' two daughters, Crystal Shawn White of Portsmouth and Tammy Shirer of North Carolina; three sons, Robert Ewell, Randy L. Wainwright and Ronnie Wainwright all of Portsmouth; one sister, Margie Ward of Sunbury; five grandchildren.

Carlton R. Casper
GATES--- Carlton Ray "Big Red" Casper, 53, native of Gates County, died Dec. 13, 2002 in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral was held Dec. 16, 2002 in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, by the Rev. Billy Presley. Burial was held in the Casper Family Cemetery.

Survivors include his mother, Clarine Winslow Casper of Suffolk and Hilda Butler of Elizabethtown, NC; three brothers, Robert V. "Bobby" Casper Jr. of Glen Allen, Va., Lester Casper of Suffolk and Greg Casper of Gates.

Roy G. Tomlin Jr.
ZUNI, Va.---Roy G. Tomlin Jr., 57, a native of Southampton County, died Dec. 14, 2002 at his home.

Tomlin was the son of the late Roy G. Tomlin Sr. and Louise Bradshaw Tomlin. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, a member of Hunterdale Baptist Church and an independent truck driver.

A funeral was held Dec. 17, 2002 in Hunterdale Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard L. Vinson Jr. officiating. Burial was in the Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife Glenda Barrett Tomlin; two sons, Roy Greg Tomlin of Charlottesville and Michael Haywod Tomlin of Zuni; a sister, Barbara T. Warren of Franklin and a granddaughter.

Mary Anne Montooth
EDENTON--- Mary Anne Nixon Mantooth, died December 14, 2002, in Portsmouth. She was a member of St. Andrew Lutheran Church and was retired from Maryview Medical center.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Mantooth; three children, son, Wayne of Burlington Calif., daughter, Michelle Kughn of Creedmore, and son Michael of Newport News, Va.; two grandsons; her mom, Frances Nixon of Edenton; nine brothers, John of Montana, George and Michael of Richmond, Eddie of Erwin, Tenn., Ernest of Jacksonville, Fla., Bill of Corapeake, Stanley of Hertford, David of Macon and Mark of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two sisters, Betty Jones of Nashville, and Linda Terry of Edenton.

A funeral was held Dec. 18, 2002 by Pastor Karen Van Stee. Burial was in Beaver Hill Cemetery in Edenton. Contributions may be made to St. Andrew Lutheran Church, 4811 High St., Portsmouth, VA 23703

Mary W. Winslow
BELVIDERE - Mary W. Winslow, 92, a native of Perquimans, died October 12, 2002, in Albemarle Hospital. She was the widow of Robert Elisha Winslow.

A funeral was conducted Tuesday at Up River Friends Meeting by the Rev. Tom McClaren. Burial was in Up River Cemetery. Swindell Funeral Home was in charge.

Mrs. Winslow was a member of Up River Friends Meeting.

Survivors include two sons, Arnold E. Winslow of Belvidere and Robert M. "Bob" Winslow of Liberty; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Sadie Cross
SUFFOLK, Va. - Sadie Cross, 83, a native of Gates County, died October 7, 2002, at Louise Obici Hospital.

A funeral was conducted Sunday at Stoney Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Michael Holloman. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

She was a member of Stoney Branch Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Omato Collins of Suffolk; three sisters, Ida Smith and Laura Williams, both of Suffolk and Eunice Davis of Portsmouth.
