Gary Merrill
Thomasville - Gary Don Merrill, 56, of 293 N. Westwood Ave. died April 7, 2000, at Community General Hospital.
He was born Jan. 24, 1944, in Davidson County, a son of John Virgil and Macie Blanche Carpenter Merrill. He had worked with Leonards Mobile Home Sales.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Bryan (Vanessa) Jackson of Thomasville; a son Rodney Merrill and his wife, Mandy, of Thomasville; four sisters, Mrs. Linda Tysinger of High Point, Mrs. Carolyn Kennedy of Thomasville, Mrs. Saundra Adkins of Winston-Salem and Mrs. Jimmy (Sherry) Harris of Lexington; a brother, Furman P. Merrill and his wife, Brenda, of Thomasville; and three grandchildren, Lauren Hunt, Lindsay Jackson and Jocelynn Merrill.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. at Family Funeral Care Chapel by the Rev. Avon Craven. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

M. Morovich
Lexington - Mrs. Margaret Rose Morovich, 75, of 5414 East U.S. 64, died at 6:32 p.m. April 7, 2000, at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church by Father Al Gondek. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at Davidson Funeral Home.

Robert Powell
Thomasville - Robert Stone Powell, 82, of 202 Stone St. died April 9, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born Dec. 23, 1917, in Shelbyville, Ky. He graduated from Georgetown College in Georgetown, Ky. He began his lifetime career in the Home Furnishing Ind. in 1942 as a senior furniture buyer for Sears Roebuck Co., Chicago, Ill. In 1946, he moved to Thomasville as one of the founding members of Erwin Lambeth Inc., where he served as vice president of marketing before he was named president of the company in 1976. After his retirement from Erwin Lambeth in 1986, he joined his wife as partner in Bee Powell Realty of Thomasville, where they worked together until 1996.
He was a member and past president of the Thomasville Rotary Club, the National Association of Furniture Manufacturers and the Southern Furniture Manufacturers Association. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Thomasville, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and chairman of the finance committee. He was married to Bernadine 'Bee' Powell for 56 years. She preceded him in death in 1996.
Surviving are three sons, Robert S. Powell Jr. of Princeton, N.J., Stephen H. Powell and Thomas A. Powell, both of High Point; three daughters-in-law, Sharon R. Powell of Princeton, Nancy H. Powell and Ked Powell, both of High Point; six grandchildren, Robert S. Powell II and Katharine Powell of Princeton, Ann Powell and Caroline Powell of Raleigh, Jennifer Powell and Kathryn Powell of High Point; and a sister, Virginia Powell Reid and her husband, Dr. Harry G. Reid of Lake Mary, Fla.
Funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church by the Rev. David Best. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery. The body will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until the hour of service. Visitation will be 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.
Memorials may be directed to the Endowment Fund of High Point Regional Hospital, 601 N. Elm St., High Point, N.C. 27262.

Viki Sink
Sophia - Mrs. Viki Lewallen Sink, 47, died April 8, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital. She was born Aug. 4, 1952, in Guilford County, a daughter of Jack and Irene Hunt Lewallen. She lived most of her life in Randolph County and was a graduate of Trinity High School. She had been employed by Abbott Eye Associates, High Point. She attended South Plainfield Friends Meeting. On Jan. 29, 1971, she married Michael Sink, who survives of the residence.
Also surviving are a daughter, Lauren Sink of the residence; her parents of High Point; two sisters, Mrs. Lynna Smith of Sophia and Mrs. Cindy Ruden of High Point; and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bob and Betty Sink of Thomasville.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale, by the Rev. Brian Hauk. Burial will be in South Plainfield Friends Meeting Cemetery. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Aubon Davis
High Point - Mrs. Aubon Graves Davis, 86, of 1855 Blain St. died April 10, 2000, at SunBridge Care & Rehabilitation for the Triad, where she had been a patient three days. She had been in declining health one year.
She was born in High Point, a daughter of Peter Edward and Sallie Sawyer Graves, who both preceded her in death. Most of her adult life was spent in New York City, where she was employed at Otis Elevator Co. as a contract officer and where she received a special citation from the Naval Department for 20 years of outstanding service. She later moved to Boston, Mass., where she was employed at the Environmental Corp. Upon retirement, she relocated to High Point nearly 20 years ago. She was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, Concrit Graves; two sisters, Atlanta Bowie and Almaritear Burleigh; and a niece, Margie Lee Smith.
Surviving are two sons, Lawrence Graves and his wife, Mary, of High Point and James Graves and his wife, Lovely Electa, of New York; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Niagara G. Cobb, Ms. Manchester Graves, Mrs. Aline G. Gripper, Mrs. Lee G. Boston and Ms. Vanilla Graves, all of High Point; and nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be noon Thursday at Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. James Graves. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery. Visitation will be 11:30 a.m. at the church and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Graves, 1847 Blain St.
Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sara Goins
High Point - Mrs. Sara Godfrey Goins, 65, of 524 James Road died April 11, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
She was born March 27, 1935, in Washington County, Ga., a daughter of Alva and Eula A. Kitchens Godfrey, who preceded her in death. On March 9, 1955, she married Burney 'Jim' Goins, who preceded her in death on Oct. 11, 1998. She was employed with DHS Veneer.
Surviving are a daughter, Kim Curry of Trinity; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Terri Goins of High Point; two grandchildren, Andy Curry and Marsha Swink; a great-grandchild, Austin Swink; a brother, Bobby Godfrey of Sylvester, Ga.; and two sisters, Erma Wiley of Greensboro and Geneva Fulton of Greenwood, Ind.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service, High Point by the Rev. Marcus Campbell. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park. Visitation will be 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and other times at 2143 Todd Drive, Trinity.

Keith Long
High Point - Keith Maurice Long, 33, of 243-Q North Point Ave., died April 9, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital, where he had been a patient four weeks.
He was born in High Point, a son of Ronald and Gloria McQueen Long. He graduated from Andrews High School, class of 1984. He was a member of Andrew's chorus, wrestling and football teams. He was an employee at Twin Oaks Car Wash. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ralph A. and Rossie Melton Long; maternal grandfather, Hector McQueen; uncle, Reginald T. Long; and two aunts, Esther McQueen and Rosa Timberlake.
Surviving are his parents; three brothers, Andre Long and his wife, Bonita, of High Point, Kerry Long and his wife, Amelia, and Derrick Long, all of Durham; two sisters, Mrs. Tamara Harrison and her husband, David, of Columbus, Ohio, and Ms. Bergeda Long of Concord; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Reophurs McQueen of High Point; two aunts, Ms. Blanch Bogans of High Point and Mrs. Ruby Long Harris of Granada Hills, Calif.; an uncle, Ralph A. Long Jr. and his wife, Joan; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be 7:30 p.m. Friday at Haizlip Funeral Chapel by Joel Irusta. Visitation will be 7 p.m. Friday at the chapel and other times at the residence of his parents, 1732 Stoneybrook Court.

Joseph McMahan
Archdale - Joseph Carl McMahan Sr., 63, of 106 Don Ave. died April 10, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was born May 10, 1936, in Swain County, a son of Voyd Bert and Sarah Elizabeth Simond McMahan, who preceded him in death. He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of Nantahala Baptist Church in Swain County. He resided in the Archdale area all his adult life and enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and working with his honeybees. He was preceded in death by a brother, J.R. McMahan.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Kay Fulk McMahan of the residence; three sons, Joseph Carl McMahan Jr., Tony Edward McMahan and Michael Bert McMahan, all of Trinity; a granddaughter, Jennifer Marie McMahan; five brothers and their wives, Voyd Bert McMahan Jr. and Reva of Bryson City, Robert Posey McMahan and Evelyn of Lexington, Samuel Claude McMahan and Alma of Roseboro, Charles Lee McMahan and Gladys of Waynesville and David Earl McMahan and Eva of Wadesboro; four sisters, Elizabeth McMahan Bridges of Swain County, Ruth Naomi Keener of Swannanoa, Grace Woods of Sylva and Joyce McMahan of Kentucky.; and an aunt, Frances Passmore of Andrews.
Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Thursday in the National Cemetery, Salisbury, by the Rev. Jimmy Greene. Visitation will be 7-8:30 tonight at Cumby Family Funeral Service, Archdale.

Leo Mortimer
Greensboro - Leo Mortimer, 84, died April 5, 2000, after declining health of several months.
He was born May 4, 1915, in Dorchester, Mass. He had been a resident of High Point since 1959, and also lived in Charlotte, Stokesdale and Greensboro in recent years. In November 1945, he married Virginia Willis Mortimer, who preceded him in death in February 1990. He was subsequently married to Iris Peters of Thomasville in February 1990, who also preceded him in death in February 1999.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served as a salvage diver during World War II in Le Harve, France following the D-Day invasion. After working briefly as a vocational education teacher, he began a career as a sales representative, working for Rockwell Manufacturing, Swingline and International Staple. He became an independent manufacturer's representative when he moved to High Point. He was well known in statewide Toastmasters since the 1960s and remained an active Toastmaster into the last year prior to his death.
Surviving are five children, Lee Mortimer of Durham, Margaret Mortimer of Atlanta, Beth Foy of Cincinnati, Judy Meyler of Greensboro, Allen Mortimer of Chattanooga, Tenn.; a brother, Thomas Mortimer of Barrington, R.I.; and seven grandchildren.
Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Fellowship Presbyterian Church, 2005 New Garden Road.
Memorials may be directed to High Point Meals on Wheels, 3925 Braddock Road, High Point, N.C. 27265.

Walton Peatross
High Point - Walton Edwin Peatross, 71, died April 10, 2000, at High Point Regional Hospital.
He was one of five sons and three daughters born to Charles and Rhoda Peatross. He was a lifelong resident of High Point and worked for the city as an electronic technician. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Tomiko Peatross of the residence; his son, Eddie Peatross of Winston-Salem; a sister, Mary Kirby and her husband, Bill; and a brother, Browda Peatross and his wife, Louise.
There will be no memorial service. Burial will be private. However the family would appreciate you remembering him in your thoughts and prayers.
Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
